2018-2019 Annual Report
Thank you for your support of Cardinal Gibbons High School. The Annual Report is an unaudited report published annually by the Cardinal Gibbons Development Office. We thank all of our donors for their generosity and commitment to supporting Catholic education.
Cardinal Gibbons Mission Statement Cardinal Gibbons High School is dedicated to providing our students with a strong formation of Catholic values, academic excellence, lifelong learning and a commitment to service.
From the President & CEO Thomas E. Mahon
Dear Cardinal Gibbons Alumni, Parents and Friends, The Annual Report is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the accomplishments of our great school. It is also an opportunity to give thanks as we take a look ahead to an exciting future. St. Paul writes in 1 Thessalonians, “In all circumstances, give thanks….” Because of your unwavering support for our students and the Cardinal Gibbons mission, thousands of young men and women have benefited from a priceless, value-driven education. So, on behalf of our current students, as well as our faculty and staff, I say thank you. Your financial support, as well as your attendance at various school events and athletic contests, means the world to us. You are truly a special and vital part of the Gibbons family! As we look to the future, we see a new STEAM building rising in the middle of our campus. We are in the process of implementing a number of curricular innovations. Our students are hard at work, and the campus is buzzing with activity and excitement. But much work remains to be done, which is why our school motto, Excelsior (Ever-Onward), is so appropriate. Together, let us work to build a better tomorrow for our students, our school and our community. Cardinal Gibbons High School is well-positioned for continued success in this next year and beyond. Assisted by your continued generosity, our students will make a difference in the world. May the Lord reward you abundantly for your generosity. In Christ,
Tom Mahon President and CEO
A Q&A with President Tom Mahon Thomas E. Mahon, a South Florida native, has dedicated his life to serving students and promoting Catholic education in South Florida. Mahon earned his master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Barry University in Miami and a bachelor’s degree from St. John Vianney College Seminary. Mahon joined the Cardinal Gibbons community in 1986, serving as a theology teacher and football coach. After a 14 year tenure in the classroom, Mahon was named dean of students in 2000, then assistant principal in 2016, prior to his appointment to the role of president in 2019. He and his wife, Jami, live in Ft. Lauderdale with their three children, two of whom currently attend Cardinal Gibbons.
Shortly after his appointment to the role of president, Mahon sat down to reflect upon his career in Catholic education and share his vision for the future of Cardinal Gibbons.
What do you see as your priorities for this year in your new role as president?
parents and community members. The curriculum aspect of our strategic plan is very exciting, as we begin introducing our Academies. We currently have plans to implement Academies in fields like engineering and robotics, medical sciences, law and legal studies and performing arts, among others. Along with the changes in curriculum, we want to ensure that, going forward, we have the best and brightest teachers guiding and mentoring our students.
You’ve spent your entire professional career at Cardinal Gibbons. What has been your greatest accomplishment so far?
I’ve given Cardinal Gibbons 33 years of my life, and to this day, the students, faculty and staff still get my unwavering support and effort every single day. And, because of this, I don’t have one singular accomplishment that I’d put above the others. I’ve had a big influence on the growth and success of Cardinal Gibbons over the years through implementing new school rules and policies along with the rest of the administration.
How would you describe your leadership style? And how do you plan to use that leadership in your new role?
My primary priority is strategically positioning Cardinal Gibbons for greatness in the future. I want to immediately start addressing the steps we need to take in terms of advancement that will provide the greatest benefit to our students. Right now, as administrators, we are really focusing on developing our curriculum and implementing our new Academies, as the Phil Smith Family Building becomes a reality.
I like to believe that I employ an inclusive leadership style. I believe in communication and collaboration, and I think these two things are key with the strong administrative team we have. In addition to that, I also believe in servant leadership. I strive to lead by example.
What do you currently see as the greatest strengths for Cardinal Gibbons? And along with that, what do you think will be the most significant opportunities?
The greatest challenge that we have is to create a giving culture at Cardinal Gibbons, that allows us to connect with our graduates and other community members. We want to have that connection to the community that allows us to reach out and ask, how can we help? But also ask for support for our endeavors as well. We want our alumni, parents, grandparents and friends to make Cardinal Gibbons their number one charity. Within this challenge of creating a giving culture, we want to encourage our graduates to become active and engaged supporters of our Mission. We really want them to come back to where it all began, where they first had those extraordinary dreams. Their support could really help some of our students who are in need. We give about $2 million a year in financial aid, and the support from our alumni could allow some students the opportunity to attend Cardinal Gibbons and have the same Catholic education they had.
Our biggest strength continues to be that Cardinal Gibbons has a reputation of excellence as a Catholic school in the Archdiocese of Miami. We have a beautiful 18-acre campus on the east side of Fort Lauderdale, great students with supportive parents and an outstanding faculty. But with everything that we do so well, one of our strengths is also recognizing the opportunities for growth. We are beginning construction on the Phil Smith Family Building, which will be dedicated to STEAM education, which came about because we recognized the need for our students to have new and exciting opportunities within science and the arts. My new role as president offers a number of new opportunities for us to network with our benefactors, our donors, our supporters and our graduates to create an extensive network of support and collaboration that benefits our school and our students.
So you touched a little bit on the new building, what do you see as the future for the school with all of these different changes taking place? And how does that affect your strategic plan? Our current strategic plan is to grow physically as a school and maximize our property so that we can put in place facilities that will better serve our students. In order to continue to grow in this way, we are planning to put a greater emphasis on the Gibbons Annual Fund and focus more on connecting with our support system of alumni,
What do you anticipate is going to be your greatest challenge within the coming year, or over the next few years?
What do you see as the future of Catholic education? I think the future of Catholic education is very bright. One thing I want to emphasize is that we maintain our Catholic identity so that we don’t just become another private school. It’s very important to me that every classroom has religious symbolism, that we say a prayer before every class, that we bring our students together we have that and that we give them the opportunity to go to confession to utilize the Sacrament of Reconciliation, as well as support their endeavours of Christian service throughout the community. As I said, the future of Catholic education is very bright, but it requires a great deal of teamwork and collaboration by all of our faculty, staff and administrators.

Thank you for your continued support of Cardinal Gibbons.

The Annual Dinner Auction is a crucial aspect of our fundraising efforts, and the success of the auction has allowed us to continue enhancing the quality of educational experiences that we offer to our students. Thanks to the generous support of our donors, last year we raised over $130,000 toward the Our Faith, Our Family, Our Future Capital Campaign, which will help create a number of new opportunities for our students to learn, grow and reach their full potential. At Cardinal Gibbons, we pride ourselves on providing our students with a strong formation of Catholic values, academic excellence, lifelong learning and a commitment to service. Our parents, alumni and friends who support events such as the Annual Dinner Auction are instrumental in allowing us to fulfill this mission, and, as a private, educational, non-profit organization, their support is imperative to our continued success.

Annual Fund The Gibbons Annual Fund is a yearlong appeal that forms the cornerstone of our fundraising activities and allows every member of the Cardinal Gibbons community, including alumni far and wide, to support our mission. Gifts made to the Cardinal Gibbons Annual Fund help cover the outstanding costs of our day-today operations. Every gift, no matter the size, immediately, and directly impacts our students and enhances their educational experience at Cardinal Gibbons. Our donors help support tuition assistance, academic programs, classroom upgrades, technology enhancements and faculty professional development.
What is the Annual Fund used for? The Gibbons Annual Fund will be used exclusively for the current year’s operating costs, which includes: • Tuition Assistance • Renovation of Current Classrooms • Enhanced Technology
How is the Annual Fund different from the Dinner Auction, Golf Tournament and other fundraisers? All of these events are essential annual fundraising programs, and we sincerely appreciate all who continue to support them. However, gifts made to our Annual Fund are specifically dedicated to supplement our operating budget and address annual expenses.
How can I help?
Through your support of the Gibbons Annual Fund, you can help us fulfill our mission and meet our operating needs. You can help us provide tuition assistance for those families in the greatest need and help enhance our students’ educational experience. Gifts of $1,000 or more welcome you into the President’s Circle, which honors our outstanding philanthropic leaders.
Is my gift tax-deductible?
Yes. Cardinal Gibbons is a 501(c)3 not for profit organization, where all applicable donations are tax-deductible.
Capital Campaign
The Our Faith, Our Family, Our Future Capital Campaign is the culmination of many months of planning and preparation, with the involvement of more than 700 key stakeholders within the Cardinal Gibbons community. The campaign will fund the construction of a new academic wing, The Phil Smith Family Building, which will feature an Engineering Lab, choral room and secondary practice space, band studio, digital music lab, a Genius Room and television editing and production studios, as well as collaborative STEAM classrooms and labs. The addition of The Phil Smith Family Building will strengthen and expand STEAM and music curriculum and programs at Cardinal Gibbons and afford students new opportunities to develop and hone their skills in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics. Capital Campaign Update The Our Faith, Our Family, Our Future Capital Campaign reached new heights in 2019 with a capital gift of $750,000 from the Phil and Susan Smith Family Foundation; the largest single gift ever pledged to Cardinal Gibbons. Family matriarch Susan Smith made the donation in honor of her late husband, South Florida businessman and philanthropist, Phil Smith, and chose to name the 20,000-square-foot STEAM building The Phil Smith Family Building to celebrate Phil’s generous and giving spirit. The Smiths have a long history as philanthropic supporters within multiple South Florida communities, pledging millions of dollars in donations to both education and healthcare institutions in South Florida, such as Florida Atlantic University and Holy Cross Hospital. Supporting local educational initiatives has always been a priority for the Smith family. “Phil was always passionate about supporting education and providing local students with the tools they need to succeed,” Susan Smith said. “Phil would be proud that we are continuing his legacy by advancing the educational opportunities available to students at Cardinal Gibbons.” Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of the Smith family, as well as over 60 other donors, steady progress has been made on making The Phil Smith Family Building a reality. In June of 2019, Cardinal Gibbons held a Ground Breaking and Dedication Ceremony for the new academic wing, which was attended by over 100 faculty, staff, donors and community members gathered for the ceremonial groundbreaking and dedication.
The ceremony began with Cardinal Gibbons alumna Madeline Diamond, singing Schubert’s Ave Maria. Paul D. Ott, former principal, Thomas E. Mahon, president, and Charlie Myers, a representative of the Smith family, spoke of the innovation and opportunities this new academic wing will bring to Cardinal Gibbons. “What we are doing here today is making sure that the opportunities for excellence at Cardinal Gibbons High School continue for decades to come,” Ott said. It was “so gratifying to see so many of our friends, parents and alumni, who have supported Cardinal Gibbons for so many years here today. The fact that these individuals keep coming back to support us is truly a testament to the outstanding work our teachers do and our school, as a whole, does.” The ceremony concluded with a blessing of the grounds by Bishop Enrique Delgado, auxiliary bishop of Miami, and a ceremonial shoveling performed by key members of the Cardinal Gibbons administration team, as well as key donors and steering committee members, which included: Ott, Mahon, Susan Smith, Shawn Smith-Myers, John P. “Jack” Seiler, Oscar A. Cedeño Jr. and Bishop Delgado. Progress on the Phil Smith Family Building continues as more and more community members choose to support the Our Faith, Our Family, Our Future Capital Campaign and assist in the further advancement of Cardinal Gibbons.
