ALUMNI FEATURES ZADEN '81, JEAN '07 AND MERRIGAN '80 RETURN TO GIBBONS TO MENTOR MOCK TRIAL TEAMS

Numerous alumni, including Richard Zaden '81, Alex Jean '07 and the Honorable Edward H. Merrigan '80, volunteered their time to spend an afternoon mentoring and coaching the Cardinal Gibbons Mock Trial team. Each alumnus, all of whom are legal professionals, shared their wisdom with students by answering questions and speaking about relevant legal topics for over an hour during a Mock Trial meeting. Zaden, Jean and Merrigan even went the extra mile to critique legal case presentations to help the students refine their performances and hone their skills before their two major competitions of the year, Empire Atlanta and Empire San Francisco. Thanks to the help of our alumni volunteers and the coaching of Mock Trial moderator Mr. Luiz Bravim, the Chiefs saw their biggest success at Empire Mock Trial in Atlanta, Georgia, where junior Camila Jaramillo won Cardinal Gibbons' first-ever national mock trial award for "Outstanding Attorney."

ALUMNI, FACULTY AND FRIENDS OF CARDINAL GIBBONS CELEBRATE A MASS OF REMEMBRANCE On Tuesday, Nov. 6, the Cardinal Gibbons community celebrated A Mass of Remembrance in honor of the deceased students, faculty, alumni and friends of Cardinal Gibbons. During the Mass, as the names of our deceased loved ones were read aloud and remembered, attendees were invited up to the altar to pour red and white sand into a large vase in their honor. This mixing of the colored sand symbolized the unity of the Cardinal Gibbons family and reminded participants that even if they are gone from this world, they will never be truly forgotten. SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS FOOTBALL Despite a slow start to the season, the Cardinal Gibbons football team is on fire heading into the playoffs. The Chiefs stumbled in August dropping their first two games to Miami Central and Milton High School in Georgia. But the team quickly refocused and closed out the rest of the regular season with an eight-game winning streak, which included a key win over American Heritage that helped the Chiefs secure the District 16 title. The Chiefs, who are ranked second overall in Region 4-5A, begin regional play in the Regional Quarterfinals on Friday, Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. against Merritt Island, the seventh-ranked team in the region. The JV football team capped off their seventh consecutive undefeated season with a 21-13 win over Chaminade Madonna on Wednesday, Oct. 24. Out of the Chief's seven total wins for the season, the team earned four shutouts against Stranahan, Coconut Creek, Fort Lauderdale and Piper.

VOLLEYBALL The girls' volleyball team is state bound! On Tuesday, Nov. 6, the Chiefs earned a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Westminster Christian to secure the Region 4-5A title. Up next, the Chiefs host Cardinal Mooney at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10 in the State Semifinals, as they continue their journey for another state title. If the Chiefs defeat Cardinal Mooney, they will advance to the State Finals, where they will take on the winner of the Episcopal School of Jacksonville vs. Trinity Christian matchup.

CROSS COUNTRY The boys' and girls' cross country teams had a successful day at the Region 4-2A meet on Saturday, Nov. 3 at the Chain of Lakes in Titusville, Florida.
