ALUMNI FEATURES SCALZO '19 FEATURED ON NETFLIX'S "QB1:BEYOND THE LIGHTS"
Class of 2019 graduate and former varsity quarterback Nik Scalzo was featured in season three of "QB1: Beyond the Lights," a documentary series, which premiered on Netflix on Friday, Aug. 16, 2019. "QB1: Beyond the Lights" follows the journeys of three of the top high school quarterbacks, Spencer Rattler, Lance LeGendre and Scalzo, as they play their final seasons of high school football and prepare to play for Division I collegiate teams. Season three of "QB1" is currently available to stream for Netflix subscribers and features 10, 30-40 minute episodes. The documentary followed Scalzo through various milestones in his life, including attending his final Homecoming at Cardinal Gibbons, signing his National Letter of Intent and watching his team make history, as the Chiefs won their first-ever State Championship. In addition to these highlights in Scalzo's final year of high school football, "QB1" also captured a few Scalzo's lowest moments, most notably tearing his ACL in a playoff game against American Heritage and ending his high school football career early. Scalzo is currently a student at the University of Kentucky, but has had his football career put on hold yet again. During a preseason scrimmage with the Wildcats team, Scalzo re-tore his ACL, and has once again undergone surgery, less than a year after the injury that ended his high school career. However, Scalzo seems hopeful about making a full recovery once again and returning to the field in 2020, the UK freshman tweeted, "God's timing is perfect; never question it." DAVIS '96 CELEBRATED AS COMMUNITY LEADER On Aug. 14, faculty member and alumnus Tim Davis '96 was awarded the Paul Harris Fellow award from the Rotary Foundation. Davis was presented the award “in appreciation of tangible and significant assistance given for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations among people of the world.” In addition to earning the Paul Harris Fellow award, Davis was also named an honorary Rotarian Club member in recognition of the outstanding work he has done within the South Florida community, as well as leading Cardinal Gibbons' Interact Club—one of three clubs that Davis moderates at Cardinal Gibbons. But Davis' community involvement doesn't end with leading clubs at Cardinal Gibbons. Each spring, Davis hosts a Fish Fry, that no only brings the community together, but also supports an outstanding cause. The Fish Fry, which has been hosted annually for the past nine years, benefits the United Special Sportsman Alliance, a non-profit wish-granting charity specializing in sending critically ill and disabled youth and disabled veterans on a free outdoor adventure of their dreams. Davis is one of the hundreds of outdoorsmen around the United States who volunteer their time and resources through USSA to support the interests of disabled youth and veterans, and take these individuals on the outdoor adventure of a lifetime. Thanks to the success of the 2019 Fish Fry, Davis was able to take Gunner (pictured above, standing to the far right), who suffers from a rare form of leukemia, on a free fishing trip in Key Largo, Florida.
