Students Raise Over $5,000 for Charities

Dance Team Earns State Championship Title

Cardinal Gibbons students raised a total of $5,327 for charities in Australia and Puerto Rico.

The Cardinal Gibbons Dance team earned the State Title in Small Varsity Team Performance.

Three Students Attend March for Life in Washington, D.C. Seniors Ramon Delgado, Will Eichholtz and Noah Vivenzio joined a number of representatives from the Archdiocese of Miami at the March for Life in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 24.

LOCAL SOCCER PROGRAMS TEAM UP FOR ANNUAL "COACHES VS. CANCER" EVENT Girls' soccer teams from Cardinal Gibbons, Marjory Stoneman Douglas, Cypress Bay and North Broward Prep teamed up for their seventh annual "Coaches vs. Cancer" game on Tuesday, Jan. 14.

Each year, the four teams get together, play matches against one another and collect special items to benefit individuals affected by cancer.

This year, the Chiefs, Eagles and Lightning received dozens of teddy bears and other stuffed animals from fans, classmates and community members. All of the stuffed animals collected through this year's "Coaches vs. Cancer" game will be donated to patients at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital.

ELEVEN ATHLETES SIGN NLI'S On Wednesday, Feb. 5, 11 Cardinal Gibbons student-athletes announced their plans to compete at the collegiate level and signed their National Letter of Intent during a ceremony held in the gymnasium.

Athletes who participated in the Feb. 5 signing ceremony included: Anna Mackie, softball- Bryant & Stratton College; Teagan Duenkel, soccer- Florida Atlantic University; Alejandro Mas, wrestling- Central Baptist College; Trevor Kole, baseball- Florida Gulf Coast University; Mary Elizabeth Gill, track and field- U.S. Naval Academy; Gabe Feliciano Munoz, football- Johns Hopkins; Richard Haynie, footballFlorida Tech; Dario Esposito, football- Bryant College; Coleman Bennett, football- Bucknell University; Samir English-Brown, football- St. Thomas University; Dasani Gordon, football- Valdosta State University.

STUDENTS RAISE OVER $5,000 FOR CHARITIES IN AUSTRALIA AND PUERTO RICO Cardinal Gibbons students raised a total of $5,327 for charities in Australia and Puerto Rico by participating in "Dress Down Days" on Jan. 16 and 23.

During the "Dress Down Days," students are allowed to dress out of uniform for a day if they give a $5.00 donation to charity. The $2,027 raised on Jan. 16 will be donated to the Australian Red Cross to aid disaster relief and recovery efforts in areas affected by the country's brushfires.

Funds from the Jan. 23 "Dress Down Day" were designated for Colegio Ponceño, a Piarist school in Ponce, Puerto Rico, where a number of families were severely impacted by the earthquakes that hit in early January 2020. Students raised $2,300, and the Piarist Fathers supplemented the students' donations with an additional $1,000, bringing the donation total to $3,300. This cause was very near and dear to Piarist Father and Cardinal Gibbons Theology teacher Rev. Ricardo Rivera's heart, as he is originally from Adjuntas, Puerto Rico.

He was incredibly appreciative of the outpouring of support that his students displayed for his home.

These "Dress Down Days" have proven to be a successful way to get students involved in charitable giving. In November and December of 2019, students raised over $4,000 through these "Dress Down Days" to benefit the school's annual Thanksgiving and Christmas Food Drives.

All of the proceeds were used to purchase Publix gift cards, which were then donated to a number of local food banks to cover the costs of providing holiday meals to numerous families within the community.

Director of Student Activities, Carlos Perez-Cubas expressed how fundraisers like the "Dress Down Days" help students learn that while their individual contribution may be small, collectively, they can make a big difference for those in need. He said, "We need to teach the students to help others, especially the people in our community who are hurting."

SCIENCE OLYMPIAD STUDENTS MEDAL IN MULTIPLE EVENTS

The Cardinal Gibbons Science Olympiad team competed in a tournament at the University of Chicago on Jan. 11.

William Gonzalez, Merit Hajdic and Emma Neclerio won medals for the Codebusters event.

Weeks later, juniors Marilyn Fiallos and Hanna Hirano earned medals in the Boomilever event at Yale's 6th annual Connecticut State Science Olympiad tournament, held in New Haven, Connecticut, on Saturday, Feb. 1.

Boomilever is a structural building event that requires participants to design and build a boomilever that is able to support the greatest mass in relation to its weight. All boomilevers are scored based on their efficiency.

Fiallos and Hirano constructed one of the top boomilevers entered into the tournament in order to medal.

During the competition, Alejandro Ortega and Nicholas Francis were featured by a local news station, WTNH News 8, as they competed against Science Olympiad teams from all over the United States.

DANCE TEAM EARNS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE The Cardinal Gibbons Dance team earned a State Championship Title in the Small Varsity Team Performance category at the American Dance Alliance State Championship competition, held at the Charles F. Dodge City Center in Pembroke Pines on Saturday, Jan. 25.

In addition to earning a state title in Small Varsity Team Performance, the Chiefs also competed in Varsity Small Lyrical and Varsity Small Jazz, placing third in both categories.

This State Championship victory comes for the Chiefs just one week after finishing second in Small Varsity Jazz at the 2020 Universal Dance Association Florida Dance Championships on Jan. 20.

COOPER AND DUMAS ‘21 SELECTED FOR BOYS STATE Juniors Austin Cooper and Zach Dumas were selected as representatives for the 2020 Florida American Legion Boys’ State, a highly selective educational program. Alex Dumas, also a junior, was selected as an alternate representative from Broward County.

Founded in 1935, Boys State is a participatory program that teaches young men the rights, privileges and responsibilities of franchised citizens. During the weeklong program, participants also learn about various topics, including the structure of city, county and state governments, as well as law and court systems, parliamentary procedure and Florida political history.

Cooper and Dumas will spend a week of their summer at Florida State University in Tallahassee collaborating with hundreds of other representatives from around the state.

RIBAS ‘21 TAKES FIRST OVERALL IN ANNUAL SHAKESPEARE MONOLOGUE COMPETITION Junior Nicholas Ribas took first overall in the National English Honor Society’s Annual Shakespeare Monologue Competition, performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.”

Senior Mackenzie Alberts finished second performing a monologue from “King Henry VI,” and sophomore Brady Andrews took third with his performance from “Macbeth.”

STUDENTS ATTEND MARCH FOR LIFE Seniors Ramon Delgado, Will Eichholtz and Noah Vivenzio, joined Rev. Rivera, Principal Cedeno and a number of other representatives from the Archdiocese of Miami at the March for Life in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 24. In addition to attending the March for Life, the ADOM group had Mass at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception.

The competition, held on Thursday, Jan. 30, had over 60 participants, and the top 10 individuals performed their monologues in front of an audience of their peers and faculty judges during a finale, held in the Chapel of the Holy Family. Participants were judged on the accuracy of their monologue, as well as the overall quality of their performance. The judges for this year’s competition included: Mr. Reid Sinclair, Mathematics teacher; Mrs. Wendy Kalis, English teacher; Mr. Dan Marguriet, English teacher; and Mr. Steve Puryear, Dean of Student Affairs.

As the competition winner, Ribas won a $40 Target gift card and is now eligible to compete in a local district monologue competition, where he will have the chance to earn a spot in the 37th Annual English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition on Monday, April 27. If Ribas qualifies for the National Shakespeare Competition, he will have the opportunity to compete against some of the nation’s most exceptional students for professional theater training opportunities, as well as scholarship prizes.

TRACK AND FIELD TEAM COLLECTS HUNDREDS OF BLANKETS FOR THE HOMELESS To celebrate Catholic Schools Week, the Cardinal Gibbons track and field team collected hundreds of new and gently used blankets to distribute to homeless individuals throughout Broward County.

The team, headed by coach Jeremiah Whitfield, collected blankets from fellow students and community members between Monday, Jan. 27, and Friday, Jan. 31. Then, on Saturday, Feb. 1, the students took to the streets of Broward County to hand-distribute the donated blankets to those in need.

In total, the team collected and distributed nearly 200 blankets.

SOSA AND DUMAS QUALIFY FOR LINCOLNDOUGLAS VARSITY STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT Sophomore Roberto Sosa and junior Zach Dumas both qualified for the Varsity State Championship Tournament in LincolnDouglas Debate after putting up outstanding performances at a local tournament on Feb. 1.

Sosa and Dumas will both compete for the State Lincoln-Douglas Debate title in at the Varsity State Championship Tournament in Orlando from Feb. 29 - March 1. The debate topic for the state championship series is: "Predictive policing is unjust."

RADIUM GIRLS: THEIR TIME IS RUNNING OUT

By Megan Price, Class of 2020 The Drama Department showcases its spring play, Radium Girls, on Friday, April 3, under the lights at NSU’s Rose and Alfred Miniaci Theater. Based on a true story set in the 1920s, the drama is about female factory workers who suffered radiation poisoning due to the luminous paint they used on clock and watch dials.

The story traces the efforts of Grace Fryer, a watch dial painter, as she fights for her day in court. Her chief adversary is her former employer, Arthur Roeder, an idealistic man who cannot bring himself to believe that the same element that shrinks tumors could have anything to do with the illnesses among his employees. The case brought by the “radium girls” that inspired this play is often thought of as a turning point in the labor rights movement. These women’s efforts are credited with significant improvements in industrial safety standards that workers everywhere benefit from even today.Senior Emily Perkins shines as Grace Fryer alongside her faithful friends and factory co-workers, Claire Bedley, junior, as Katherine and Emma Gidlow, senior, as Irene. They are accompanied by a talented lead cast, including Parker Greenblatt, Gabe Sweeney and Maria Tovar.

Erick Crow, director of choral activities and drama, when asked about the challenge of putting on this show, pointed out, “There is an element of pressure when you are dealing with a true story. We want to do justice to these women and their place in history, while at the same time, we want audiences to walk away thinking we made some great theatre.”The show’s production crew is equally talented and is led by stage manager, Julia Nicolaus; asst. stage manager, Brooke Cooney; head costume designer, Megan Price; head props designer, Madison Mishkin; and head makeup designer, Lily Krause.

Written with warmth and humor, “Radium Girls” has a powerful and relevant message for today - that fighting against inequality never stops. We know that you will ache for these young lives that didn’t want to be martyrs but ended up having a far bigger impact than they might have had otherwise. You’ll mourn the loss and thank these women for not backing down.
