UPITT PHARMACY STUDENT SHARES COLLEGE EXPERIENCE Spencer Schlecht, a third-year graduate student at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy, shared his knowledge of the ever-expanding field of pharmacy with approximately 300 science students at Cardinal Gibbons during an informational presentation on Thursday, March 7. Schlecht, a representative from University of Pittsburgh’s Pharmacy Innovation Experience Research (PIER) program, spoke to students about the versatility of a pharmacy degree and detailed the roles of pharmacists in the professional world, as well as the opportunities for pharmacy students available in the fields of health care, research and insurance. “Pharmacy is a very versatile degree. It’s a good stepping stone into any role within the health care field,” Schlecht said. In addition to discussing the professional field of pharmacy, Schlecht offered students insights on how to prepare for competitive health science programs, weigh the pros and cons of different education programs and tracks and finance future educational and professional endeavors. Four Cardinal Gibbons students have previously participated in University of Pittsburgh’s PIER program, including Olivia Te Kolste, Madison Gilman, Bailey Maholm and Anna Mandziak, three of whom attended Schlecht’s presentation.
