Licensure— where’s it at?

The issue of older adult protection continues to be a top topic in the media and at the Legislature. While the 2018 Legislative Session ended in a “bust”, work on elder care issues continued during the fall of 2018 and has been a focus in the current session. This general presentation will discuss the ongoing work at the Capitol, key issues of contention and predicted outcomes on assisted living licensure, older adult protections, staff qualifications, electronic monitoring, and funding.

Must a client move when you can no longer provide home care services in a housing with services (HWS) setting? What happens to home care services if housing ends? Does termination of one type of service automatically mean termination of the other? This session will address the different roles providers play when ending a relationship in the HWS setting. Both the housing and the home care providers’ obligations when terminating a relationship with a tenant or home care client will be discussed, as well as a variety of scenarios, including when a tenant stays after home care services end.

One-fourth of Americans aged 65+ fall each year. We know that fear of falling can cause people to restrict their movements or make all kinds of accommodations in their environments. Families often identify falls as a major concern and may have expectations that care providers can prevent people from falling. This session will look at the evidence-based tools available to identify risks that cause or contribute to seniors’ falls. The root causes analysis process will be explained and applied to fall prevention and fall investigation to facilitate a reduction in person-specific risk areas.
