Partners to date include the African American Chamber of Commerce and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. The Asian American Chamber of Commerce has also expressed its support of the initiative. The Orlando Advocate, Florida Sun, Orlando Times and WOKB Radio have also joined the initiative as Partners. elcome, to the first issue of Caribbean American Passport. Producing this newspaper has been a process that I can only describe as close to pregnancy and labor...giving birth to a beautiful baby. It was long and arduous with tough and beautiful moments along the way. It started out as a hazy picture in my mind and grew every month into what you see now as a solid shape and form. I hope you enjoy it. I have to thank the wonderful community of staff, friends, clients and family who believed at times more than I did, that we were going to do a great job and put out a wonderful newspaper... without their push and support it would not have happened. With moving every dream to a reality - write it down, make it happen, tell others who will support you and have them be your cheerleaders when you need it.

This newspaper will give me the opportunity to merge those two by promoting Caribbean Culture and Caribbean American Passport is hiring the following: the way we adapt to life here - outside our homelands. The name Caribbean American Passport was chosen in a contest against Creole Lifestyle Magazine for the name of this newspaper, but I felt so strongly about the word Creole as a word that suited the mixture of the Caribbean Community and a word that encompassed all of the Caribbean, that I named my column Creole Lifestyle. The word Creole is typically used to describe language, the mixture of the mother tongue with the taught language and you can find the word Creole in English Colonies, Spanish and French all used to describe the new language that evolves. However Creole has another meaning as well - the word Creole means the people that were born in the new lands as opposed to the Generation that immigrated. Creole then was used to describe Portuguese born in the Colonies, Europeans born in the Colonies, Black Slaves born in the Colonies, Dutch and the list goes on. Creole is a language and a description of us as People. We are changing and we and our children are hybrids of the new culture - the mix of the two lands and so we will look back at our homelands but also celebrate the unique Creoles that we are here now in America. This Creole Lifestyle Column will address this every month, through features like next month’s question of - A Caribbean Diet, good or bad. What did we do back home, how have we adapted it to life here. I’ll interview a team of doctors and people on the streets to find out their thoughts on the matter. Bernard has been offered a Developmental Contract while Sarwan and Taylor’s limited availability for the West Indies over the past year due to injuries weighed heavily against them. Sarwan and Deonarine’s general levels of fitness were also deemed unsatisfactory. Ramdin and Dowlin’s performances over the past year have been less than favourable in the view of the Selection Committee and they were not recommended for Central Retainer or Developmental contracts.

Advice from Newborn Baby Specialist
Do you enjoy what you do? Well I do, I’m known as the “British Newborn Specialist” and I’ve moved from family to family, month to month from the Upper West side of Manhattan to Central Florida, Dr Phillip’s, Windermere, Winter Gardens, you call me and I’ll come and help you during the first few days or months through feedings, sleeping through the night and all the things a parent with a newborn needs. But what does my job actually entail? I’ve helped Vice-Presidents of major corporations answer the question of “swaddle or no swaddle.” Mothers at their wits end asking “since it’s been three days and my milk hasn’t come in should I just give a bottle? Looking at me with desperation I can see the question - will she have the answer I need? The first thing I say to new moms is to breathe and relax, you just gave birth to the one of the most important person in your life relax and enjoy the experience. The best advice I can give after 20 years as a nanny The best advice I can give you is to relax and enjoy this time - things that work for others may not work for you and this baby. Try but if not try something different, it does not make you any less of a mother. Use a five day rule when trying new things, but if they don’t improve, move on. Call your doctor constantly if it makes you feel more comfortable, don’t refuse help, take as much help as you can from neighbors, family, friends and in-laws. Use this to make time for sleep, personal hygiene and just tending to your own self. Use these tips to help you to stay calm. Whether breast feeding or not, staying at home or working - scheduling feedings is important. If you’re breast feeding try using a double pump for convenience and speed. After you’ve given your baby a nice warm bath, warm your hands with baby oil and massage baby from head to toe - your baby’s now relaxed and ready for a bottle or breastfeeding and straight to bed.

A note from Jackie W
hen my children were born, my mother was not here and available to assist me with the transition to motherhood. Even though my full time job at the time was as a nanny, I realized that motherhood could be overwhelming. I saw firsthand, that parents of little bundles of joy often required special assistance so I switched careers and helped new and not so new moms make the transition from hospital to home and integration into their new family unit. I am available to assist with a wide range of services ranging from setting up nurseries, working with you on setting up your gift registry and after the baby walking you through - feedings, setting up schedules and more which result in making sure that you are well rested and capable of dealing with the daily demands of motherhood. I live in the Orlando area and I’m available for telephone support, in cases where a doctor is not necessary, and for visits and overnight stays. I have over twenty years of experience and would be happy to provide references. I look forward to speaking with you to discuss how best I can assist you. Sincerely, Jackie mommyandnanny@gmail.com

Young People’s Forum Ball
L
ady D’s Young Peoples Forum, Black & White Ball.... was held on Saturday, August 28, 2010. The Ball was supposed to be a night of enchantment in the celebration of our youth and their accomplishments throughout the year and more over during the summer of Lady D’s Young Peoples Forum Manners Academy. This was a full summer term of free etiquette and manners classes open to the community. YPF offered this program to various locations and youth centers. The Black and White Ball definitely met those goals.
• Ms. Rachel Sims received recognition for her dedication to the forum and long tenure and participation. The highlight of the evening was an inaugural award presented to Mr. Harris Rosen for the Love of a Child, Harris Rosen Award. Just think back a year or two before the recession; your customer is not the same person today. Your customer is probably cutting back on a lot of things and needs to adapt to a different lifestyle. So it's to your advantage to think like your customer.

Documentary being filmed in Orlando “Straight out of Florida, a West Indian Perspective.”
L
yma Dunbar of Oildown Productions and Geesmooth Multimedia TV are filming “Straight out of Florida, a West Indian Perspective.” This short documentary will seek to portray the daily lives of West Indians located in Orange County, Orlando. This concept is the brainchild of Ms. Dunbar who decided upon it after being given the opportunity to complete a short film by Gayelle TV based in Trinidad and Tobago. In completing research for the film, Lyma learned that between the years 2006 – 2008, The U.S. Census Bureau revealed a very high demographic of 58,706 Caribbean born individuals in Orange County. “The figures are not broken down into countries, and it does not take into account those who do not state that they are from the Caribbean, neither those who are undocumented. None the less, even with this margin of error,
it is a very high number.” Said Lyma. She goes on to state that “This film will be a documentation of how we interact, socialize, attend church, work and co-exist as Caribbean people, and transplants from our main cultures. It will also showcase our collage of music, and the important functions of West Indian Associations in keeping the respective cultures alive through events as well as assisting those less fortunate in our home countries. The film will not cost organizations and people any money to participate, and upon completion, Oildown Productions and Geesmooth Multimedia TV will schedule a preview at a location in the Orlando area. All participants will be invited to attend, relax, enjoy a cocktail and view the final edited film. For more information, please contact Lyma at 321-263-9939.
