Samuel J Roberts,

Embrace the moments this season, li

In a world increasingly consumed by digital connections and constant notif-

ications, the holiday season offers us a gentle reminder to pause, reflect, and prioritize what truly matters This December, Caribbean American Passport invites you to embrace the essence of family, friends, and living fully in the moment.

As we navigate through the hustle and bustle of modern life, it is easy to get caught up in the distractions that our digital age presents Social media, emails, and endless streams of information often pull us away from the present, leaving little room for genuine human connection. However, the holiday season beckons us to step away from our screens and immerse ourselves in the warmth of family gatherings, the laughter of friends, and the simple joys of shared moments

This issue of Caribbean American Passport is our Gratitude Issue, a heartfelt celebration of the people and experiences that enrich our lives. We are deeply honored to have this issue sponsored by Women Empowering Women in Development (WEW), an organization dedicated to making a difference in our communities This holiday season, WEW has turned their focus towards a cause close to many of our hearts: raising funds for pediatric cancer patients through the Jessica June Children's Cancer Foundation, Inc.

TThe holiday season is a time for giving, and WEW's efforts exemplify the true spirit of generosity and compassion Their work ensures that children battling cancer and their families receive much-needed support during a time that should be filled with joy and hope. We are inspired by their dedication and encourage our readers to take a moment to give back, whether through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading kindness within their communities

As you gather with loved ones this holiday season, we urge you to cherish every moment. Put aside the distractions, and be fully present in the company of those who matter most. Share stories, create new memories, and savor the beauty of togetherness Let this be a time to reconnect with the values that unite us: love, gratitude, and the unwavering support of one another

From all of us at Caribbean American Passport, we extend our deepest gratitude to our readers, contributors, and sponsors for making this journey with us May your holiday season be filled with warmth, joy, and meaningful connections. And as we step into the new year, let us carry forward the spirit of gratitude, living each day fully and with purpose.

Wishing you and yours a holiday season filled with love, laughter, and lasting memories

Celebrating 35 Years in the Industry: #LeaningInto2025 Reflections

As the saying goes, "life is but a vapor" –here one day and gone the next In an age where digital distractions abound and external validation is often sought after, it becomes crucial to resist the temptation to boast or chase the approval of others Instead, we must anchor ourselves in authenticity and purpose, steadfast in our values and standards, refusing to be confined by others’ expectations My beloved #GrandmaRuby always said, "get what no one can take away from you and live a life above reproach "

Reflecting on my journey of 35 years in the development and construction industry,

I am reminded of the immense opportunities and experiences that have shaped me. My career path has led me to work alongside some of the world's most influential minds:

Camp Boggy Creek and A Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, co-founded by Paul Newman and General H. Norman Schwarzkopf Jr

Theodore J Forstmann and Jim Moran of the Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship

Walt Disney Imagineering’s Animal Kingdom, under the visionary leadership of Joe Rohde, where Zsolt Hormay personally sculpted me and ensured my name is immortalized in the Tree of Life.

Darden Corporate, with Chip Wade overseeing 380 Olive Garden remodels.

HHCP Architects, led by Charles Braun, completing 10 regional hospitals.

The Palm Trump International Hotel & Tower Palm Jumeirah in Dubai, working with President Donald Trump years ago

Throughout my career, I have worked with industry giants like Skanska, Turner, and Whiting-Turner, and have been privileged to travel to foreign countries, reviewing construction projects in other states.

As Women Empowering Women in Development (WEW Development) looks towards 2025, I find myself dusting off the treasure box of wisdom imparted by mentors like Susan Taylor, who has been a guiding force in my life since 1984. Her words still resonate: "Little sister, you have lots of potential; let’s not spoil it with poor decisions."

Heading into this new chapter, I urge us all to reflect on the treasures we will carry into 2025 What lessons and experiences will we hold onto? Equally important, what are we willing to release that no longer serves our purpose or fulfillment?

Psalm 27:13 reminds us, "I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living." Let us walk into 2025 with confidence, embracing the goodness and grace that surrounds us, and continue to empower one another in our journeys

As we celebrate these 35 years, let us remember to lean into each moment, be true to ourselves, and continue building a legacy that uplifts and empowers the next generation

Originally scheduled for October 10th, the event was postponed due to hurricanes Helene and Milton. However, the December celebration exceeded all expectations, with attendees treated to a magical experience in the beautifully transformed Victory Box Theatre

The holiday decor was made possible by the creative efforts of Brian Van Dam of Yellowstone Landscape and Melissa Moreno of Floor & Decor Commercial Despite the chilly weather, the ambiance, inspired by New York City's Bryant Park, radiated warmth and holiday cheer

performances by Ginetta Vendetta, Muffy Charles, and Keith Lorren, whose talents set the perfect festive tone for the evening Melissa Moreno also kept the celebration alive on social media, sharing realtime updates under the hashtag #heartandsoul, allowing the magic of the night to reach far beyond the venue

spiration for Junkanoo

John Canoe, also known as January Conny, (died circa 1725) was the European name given to an Akan warrior from Axim, Ghana. He was a chief of the Ahanta people in the early 18th century, who established a stronghold in the defunct Fort Fredericksburg and fought multiple wars with European traders for twenty years. The stronghold finally fell in 1725, though Canoe's fate is unknown. He is commemorated in the Junkanoo festival held in the Caribbean each December.

Junkanoo, the vibrant and colorful festival celebrated in the Bahamas and across the Caribbean, has deep roots in African traditions and the enduring spirit of resistance and joy At the heart of this tradition lies the enigmatic figure of John Canoe (also spelled Jonkonnu), an African leader whose legacy inspired a cultural phenomenon that has endured for centuries.

Who Was John Canoe?

John Canoe was an African chieftain or leader who is believed to have lived during the 18th century. Historical accounts about his life are scarce, but he is thought to have been a warrior and a symbol of resistance against European colonial forces One theory suggests that John Canoe led a group of African soldiers in defiance of European invaders, earning him legendary status among his people

The exact origins of his name are debated Some historians link it to "John Conny," a real African leader and trader from the Gold Coast (modern-day Ghana) who resisted Dutch and British incursions in the early 1700s. Others suggest that the term "John Canoe" evolved as a way for enslaved Africans in the Caribbean to pay homage to a heroic figure from their homeland.

The Roots of Junkanoo Junkanoo began as a celebration among enslaved Africans in the Caribbean, particularly during the Christmas season. It was one of the few times when enslaved people were granted time off from their grueling labor They used this brief period of freedom to honor their African heritage through music, dance, and costumes.

John Canoe’s legacy played a significant role in shaping the festival He became a symbol of resistance, resilience, and the enduring connection to African identity The festival allowed enslaved people to preserve their cultural traditions and express themselves in defiance of their oppressors.

Boost Your Credit Score: Tips for the Caribbean American Community in 2025

For the Caribbean American community, 2025 presents new opportunities for financial growth but achieving these goals often hinges on one key factor: a strong credit score. Whether you're aiming to purchase a home, start a business, or simply improve your financial health, understanding and improving your credit score can open doors. Here are practical strategies tailored for Caribbean Americans to boost credit scores and secure better financial opportunities in 2025.

1 Get on the Electoral Roll

Many in the Caribbean American community may overlook the importance of registering to vote Beyond civic engagement, being on the electoral roll can positively impact your credit profile Lenders often use voter registration to verify your identity and stability, which can strengthen your financial credibility.

2 Regularly Check Your Credit Report

Mistakes happen, and inaccuracies on your credit report can cost you Regularly review your credit report to ensure it accurately reflects your financial activity. Spotting errors early can prevent unnecessary damage to your score Additionally, monitoring your report can help you detect fraudulent activity, such as unauthorized accounts or transactions

3 Keep Credit Card Balances Low

Using credit cards responsibly is critical for maintaining a good credit score. Aim to keep your balances below 30% of your credit limit to show lenders you can manage credit wisely. If possible, pay off your balance in full each month to avoid interest charges and demonstrate financial discipline

4. Build Credit History

A lack of credit history can be a barrier, especially for newcomers to the U.S. financial system. If you're new to credit or seeking to rebuild, consider:

Opening a secured credit card: These cards require a deposit but can help establish a positive credit history. Adding your name to household bills: Being listed on utility, broadband, or energy accounts and paying them on time can reflect positively on your credit profile

Becoming an authorized user: Joining a family member's credit card account with a strong history can benefit your credit score without requiring your own credit application

5 Pay Bills On Time

Payment history is one of the most significant factors influencing your credit score. To ensure you never miss a due date, set up automatic payments for recurring bills Even a single late payment can negatively impact your credit score, so consistency is key.

6. Use Credit Eligibility Tools

Before applying for new credit, use online tools that offer "soft" credit checks to assess your eligibility These checks allow you to explore loan and credit card options without affecting your score Avoid making multiple "hard" inquiries, as these can lower your score temporarily.

7 Maintain Long-Term Credit Accounts

While it’s essential to shop around for the best deals, keeping older accounts open can benefit your credit score Long-term credit accounts demonstrate stability and a proven track record of managing credit responsibly

8. Break Financial Links with Ex-Partners

If you've had joint credit with someone and are no longer financially connected, ensure that association is removed from your credit file Their credit behavior could affect your score, so breaking these ties is vital for your financial independence

Remember to celebrate and share your progress

Financial empowerment is a community effort. Share your journey and successes with others in the Caribbean American community to inspire and educate. Whether it’s hosting a credit workshop or simply offering advice to a friend, collective progress strengthens the community.
