Cuba, to many, will be seen as a land and a people trapped in a time warp for decades; from the classic vintage American cars that were imported before the trade embargo, to the buildings that have stood the test of time and maintain the true character of the old classic Cuba. Havana is divided between new and old by the stately boulevard that runs past El Capitolio. The El Capitolio was actually constructed to be an almost exact replica of the Washington Capital.

Off to College

By Aleia Roberts My grandfather possesses, as many Caribbean people seem to in their old age, an innumerable accumulation of old proverbs. Throughout my life, the majority of his comments seemed outdated and trivial; but as I grew older they developed into thoughtful lessons that he expected me to utilize when faced with difficult decisions. As I began my junior year of high school and the prospect of college became increasingly evident, he told me “when yuh dead yuh nah sabee, an’ when yuh sabee yuh dead.” In a more fathomable translation, this tells us that we spend an entire lifetime trying to gain knowledge and understanding, and when it seems as though we finally have it all, we’re dead. This can indubitably be interpreted as cynical, but to me the meaning goes far beyond the gloom and helplessness that would likely be construed from this proverb. I agree that learning is something that is spread over a lifetime, and that we cannot achieve full understanding until the moment we die when there is no more that we, as limited individuals, can learn. This is not a bad thing. We spend our entire lives chasing knowledge, and through this we attain more than we probably plan to. When I am on the verge of an answer to a question and a new factor is introduced, suddenly the question is altered or more questions are added. The more I know, the more I crave to learn. Questions such as “how?” and “why?” pervade my mind the minute I learn something new, and it enables me to

Letters to My Lawyer™ Dual Citizenship for Children

Dear Lawyer,

choice, and with the intention to give up U.S. citizenship. Intent can be shown by the person’s statements or conduct. For example, in order to become a naturalized citizen of the US, you will be required to sign a statement acknowledging that you “renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty, of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen. Therefore, it is arguable that once you become a naturalized US citizen, you have given up all prior citizenship. However, the U.S. in practice does not require naturalized citizens to take any steps to formally renounce their citizenship in foreign territories. Nor will the government stop US citizens from becoming citizens of foreign countries.

My children were born in the US. However, I am a Canadian national and would like to apply for Canadian citizenship on their behalf. If I apply for Canadian citizenship will my children be dual citizens of the US and Canada or will they have to give up their US citizenship?

The U.S. Government recognizes that dual nationality exists but does not encourage it as a matter of policy. Dual nationals owe allegiance to both the U.S. and the foreign country and they are required to obey the laws of both countries. Most notably, use of the foreign passport does not endanger U.S. citizenship.

Please help, Confused Citizen

We cannot provide advice on the application of laws in foreign countries and therefore, you should consult with an Canadian immigration attorney to determine whether Canadian laws mandate that your children give up their US citizenship in order to acquire Canadian nationality, in light of the US’ stance on dual nationality.

Antigua and Barbuda Carnival The Caribbean’s Greatest Summer Festival

By Sandra Fatmi ntigua & Barbuda’s Carnival is considered by many to be the greatest Caribbean Summer Festival; this year, the Caribbean American Passport was able to experience the Carnival that we had heard about, prior to them getting ready for their biggest show yet as they celebrate their 60th year in 2016. Spectacular! Festive! Exciting! Safe! Antigua and Barbuda’s celebration of Carnival coincides with the celebration of Emancipation and lasts from July 25th to August 4th 2015 with a lineup that showcases all aspects of carnival - the people, music, mas and steelpan. Friday, July 24th was the Glow Parade Ceremony – Night of Stars. Saturday, July 25th was the Opening Ceremony at the ARG and T-shirt Mas. Sunday, July 26th JCI Antigua (formally known as Antigua Junior Chamber) was held for the first time on a Sunday (July 26th) and produces the Annual Jaycees Caribbean Queen Show.

I got there shortly after 3:00 am when J’ouvert started and couldn’t believe the sea of people that was there before me in their bright colors playing t-shirt mas with various troupes. The crowd was controlled, the music was pumping, the camaraderie was like no other, and one that I won’t ever forget. I’ve attended several J’ouvert’s from New York to Jamaica, and this was by far the best one yet. J’ouvert ended at approximately 10:30 am, and I know you won’t believe it, but I was bright

BAKRNAL IN THE COUNTRY istory is not unique in repeating itself. Hysteria does as well. In thinking about the mass exodus from Port-of-Spain on Friday July 24th, the rumours about police stations being attacked, and the sense of blind panic that caused gridlock in north Trinidad, it seems so reminiscent of old times.

McElhone, a reporter with the Washington Post, tagged “kissing bugs” as the main culprits behind an increasing number of suspected insect bites on people’s lips. He wrote a sensational story about how the victims had been “badly poisoned” and how the kissing bugs were threatening to start a new plague. No kissing bug was ever caught and the panic was deemed a “newspaper epidemic”.

When I was young and we had no Facebook, Twitter and cellphones to help to create instant panic, there was the rumour In 1991, after Abu Bakr and the Musilmeen were jailed, a few of the “Green Face” man. Then there was the person who sup- prisoners escaped from the Carrera prison and immediately posedly went around with a razor removing hair from women’s there was panic because people thought it was Bakr and his pubic areas. I still remember men with sticks and cutlasses, egged on by their women who blushingly shivered at the thought of the bushwhacker, protecting their communities from the “shaver-man”.

“Mass hysteria can hit almost anywhere, so long as there is a group of people ready to fall into a collective delusion. While it’s easy to look back in hindsight and laugh at the whole thing, it’s an entirely different world for those involved.”

This kind of senseless crowd response is not new. What is a bit different is that in Trinidad it gripped almost the entire population for a short while and was triggered by an event that was blown out of proportion by a lack of information, misinformation, media irresponsibility and speculation. While many examples of hysteria occur in closed communities, this one seemed to have temporarily addled the brains of the majority of people in Trinidad.

According to the LISTVERSE website, “Mass hysteria can hit almost anywhere, so long as there is a group of people ready to fall into a collective delusion. While it’s easy to look back in hindsight and laugh at the whole thing, it’s an entirely different world for those involved.”

boys back on the rampage. I was Chief Information Officer at the time and after vainly trying for a long time to locate some public officials, eventually got through to a prison officer who clarified the situation and I was able to make a statement that helped to calm down the situation. What Frantic Friday proved is that we still have a “Green Face Man” and that our fears of Bakr and his gang continue to run very deep. I don’t mind Manning giving him the land in Mucurapo, just don’t give him a razor.

In the late 1780s in France, just as the Revolution started, a rumour went around that the French aristocrats were sending brigands to plunder the villages and fields. The reaction by villagers was so extreme that it contributed to the massive changes in the social order that the Revolution inspired. In Uttar Pradesh (the part of India from which many of our immigrants came) there was the “muhnochwa,” or “face scratcher,” who was said to leave burn or scratch marks on the faces and extremities of its victims. Some people believed that it was a drone from their enemy, Pakistan. According to LISTVERSE, “Villagers formed vigilante groups and rioted against what they believed was the lack of police protection. The unrest became so pervasive that the national government had to step in and send agents to investigate the case.” In Malaysia and Indonesia there was the rumour that the Government was paying bandits to cut off people’s heads for use as cornerstones in buildings. At the turn of the 20th Century, the “kissing bug” struck the United States. James

Mango’s Tropical Cafe is coming to Orlando! he Caribbean breeze is blowing in our direction. If you like to Mambo, Salsa, Reggae, Soca or even Kompa? Well wouldn’t it be nice if you could have it all in one place, I have great news; It is Coming! Mid fall, October 2015, International Dive will heat up with the opening of Mango’s Tropical Café. The ground has been broken, the concrete has been poured, and signage is in place. Mango’s is here. If you have been fortunate to visit the Miami location of Mango’s Tropical Cafe, then be pre-

pared to be impressed. The Orlando location will be four, yes I said four times the size of that popular Miami location. Meaning four times the space for partying, more space for events, more space for fun and all indoors under one roof. There is a lot planned for this location and other parts of International Drive in the near future.

Rihanna went home for Crop Over he may be one of the top-selling artists in the world. But Rihanna still hasn’t forgotten her roots. The 27year-old singer - born Robyn Rihanna Fenty - was back in her native Barbados as she took part in Jouvert and Crop Over. Barbados’ Crop Over Festival The Crop Over summer festival is Barbados’ Carnival festival. Its origins can be traced back to the 1780’s, a time when Barbados was the world’s largest producer of sugar. At the end of the sugar season, there was always a huge celebration to mark the culmination of another successful sugar cane harvest - the Crop Over celebration.

As the sugar industry in Barbados declined, so too did the Crop Over festival and in the 1940’s the festival was terminated completely. However, the festival was revived in 1974 and other elements of Barbadian culture were infused to create t h e e x t r a v a g a n z a t h a t e x i s t s t o d a y. Cropover’s revelry is serious business — its various activities pull thousands of visitors to Barbados, filling hotel rooms and guesthouses across the 430-square-kilometer island, generating an estimated $80 million dollars for its economy in 2014, according to the NCF. Cropover is also the engine that accelerates Barbados’ music industry into high gear, and the launching pad for many Barbadian (or Bajan) artists’ careers.

Caribana or Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival Toronto It’s not all just a name…people say there’s a definite difference.

t the beginning of August, there’s Caribana. Or rather, the Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival Toronto, which is its current legal name. The festival has been the subject of many arguments recently, but you cannot argue that it is one of the largest carnival-styled festival of its kind in North America, pumping over $438 million into Toronto annually according to a 2013 Ipsos Reid economic impact study. However the arguments are that it has become increasingly evident over the last decade that Caribana has been in need of rejuvenation. The Caribbean community has not been benefitting from the money generated in any tangible way.

ces, so it was easy for us to agree or agree to disagree to get things done. We produced Caribana to commemorate Expo 67, Canada’s 100th birthday celebration, and we started the festival to show the different Caribbean islands and their camaraderie. We had people from Trinidad, Jamaica, Guyana, Barbados, St. Vincent working on it. The uniqueness from each island stimulated many discussions around building Caribana into this cultural force that would support our community and enhance the wider city of Toronto. By Kamal Abdool uring the Republican Debate on August 6th 2015, Wisconsin Governor stated that as President he would not approve of abortions even when the mother’s life is in danger or if the pregnancy occurred as a result of Rape or Incest. This is frightening. Even more frightening is the other nine Candidates on the stage did not rebut his position and therefore it is fair to say that’s the Republican Party position.

Dear Readers, if your religion forbids you to have an abortion, then don’t. I will never ask you to compromise your religious beliefs. Neither do I expect the Church to sanction abortion. In fact, I expect the Church to speak out against having an abortion. The key is keeping your beliefs within the confines of the Home and Church. The Government has to cater to everyone including those who do not suscribe to any religion. I wish no woman ever had to abort but we both know that’s wishful thinking.

Republicans justify their position by referencing the Bible totally ignoring the fact that the Bible is not the law of the land.

I’m a firm believer that Religion must be kept within the Church and the Home and out of the Public Square. Regardless of what the Far Right express, the Founding Fathers were very clear on Separation of Church and State with the intent of protecting the State from Religion. History is full of examples where the early settlers in the New World were running away from Religious Domination and Persecution.

What is your voice? “marriages between homosexuals,” measured at 60 percent this year, was just 27 percent when Gallup first asked the question in 1996. But that didn’t happen organically. http:// www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2015/07/gay-marriagesupreme-court-politics-activism/397052/

ecently several issues became major topic of discussion in the media and the question came up as to how they became so important. The answer I came up with is that the people who shared their opinion made their voices heard. Their words became action. Caribbean American Passport Magazine gives us a voice in the community but so many of us keep silent when our voices are needed to express a passion or a sentiment. Our voices does not necessarily have to be verbal but can be an action voice that speaks loud enough to make a difference. I am thinking about the plight of the Haitians in the Dominican Republic the emotional and physical perplexity they are experiencing. They are torn about being Haitian but born in the Dominican Republic without proper documentations to stay so they’re faced with deportation. We can make a difference with our voices. The Supreme Court ruled in favor to allow gay marriages in America and certain people were out raged by saying that our country is becoming like Sodom and Gomorrah. What changed, in other words, wasn’t the Constitution—it was the country. And what changed the country was a movement.

We all have a voice in our community even through our civic organizations and we can be heard without holding a position in leadership. We can join the movement for or against and be heard. When we begin to complain about the system, about how decisions are made and how things are done it’s an indicated time to come to grip with our own responsibility to make a positive contribution. I validate most of my opinions from references of stories in the Bible. Take for instance the story of Nehemiah. The only thing I know about Nehemiah is that he is suppose to be the shortest man in the Bible – because of his name, “knee-high-miah.” He is not as well known as some other great men in the Bible but he stands out taller than others. Nehemiah is the account of the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem. And Jerusalem is a symbol of the city of God, God’s dwelling place and the center of life for the world. Here Nehemiah reminisced by penning these words, “When I heard these words (that the walls were damaged) I sat down and wept, and mourned for days; and I continued fasting and praying before the God of heaven. (Nehemiah 1:4 RSV) He saw a problem and it troubled his spirit to the point where he wept and mourned for days. He was that passionate about his city.

Rohan Lawrence shouted his vision as he sought out fathers who have full custody of their children by honoring them at a Father’s Banquet recently. PHT Kaushal reduced Pakistan to 138 in the first innings, taking five wickets. One could reasonably expect the Pakistanis to fold in the third test. The Aussies promptly responded in the second test winning by a massive 405 runs with CJL Rogers scoring 173 and SPD Smith 215, pushed the first innings total to 566 runs.
