Orlando City Soccer

unday March 9th was an amazing day for the City of Orlando and even more so for Orlando City Soccer; a record breaking attendance for the season opener in Orlando – 62,510 attendees. Hours before the game, scalpers were asking $150 for tickets with face values of $60, and some fans arrived five hours before the 5:15 p.m. kickoff time, tailgating and playing games in the parking lots. The game started with great expectations from Orlando City’s highest paid import, Kaka’, and the rest of Orlando starting lineup. The Brazilian star Kaká (10) was a key acquisition for the expansion Orlando City club. When the game kicked off, it was the Orlando fans who had the best time, watching their team control the run of play and apply pressure behind Kaká, Kevin Molino and midfielder Cristian Higuita, son of the former Colombia goalkeeper

The Celebration of Phagwa . . . The Hindu Festival of Holi oli is a festival in Hinduism, which many scholars regard as the oldest living religion. The word Hindu is derived from the Sanskritterm Sindhu (or Indus), which meant river. It referred to people living in the Indus valley in the Indian subcontinent. Hinduism has no founder, one universal reality (or god) known as Brahman, many gods and goddesses (sometimes referred to as devtas), and several scriptures. Hinduism also has no priesthood or hierarchical structure similar to that seen in some other religions, such as Christianity.

Hindus celebrate Holi in a colorful spring festival that has much in common with both Valentine’s Day and April Fool’s Day. The spirit of the day is to make people look and feel ridiculous by spraying them with colored water and playing practical jokes on them. The presiding deity is Kama, the Hindu version of Cupid whose sugarcane bow is strung with a line of humming bees, and whose arrows are flower stems that have been tipped with passion to wound the heart. Kama is most active in the springtime, when he wanders through the woodlands looking for victims. Although Holi is a two day festival in

Letters to My Lawyer™ WORKING WITH SUSPENDED DRIVER’S LICENSE

By Sasha Watson, Esq. Dear Lawyer: I want to apply for the deferred action program implemented by the President last year. I have two (2) children who are US citizens and I have been living here since 2003. My mother had filed a petition for me several years ago but I was denied my green card when I applied for adjustment of status. Can you advise on when we will be able to apply for President Obama’s new program? From Parent in Distress

However, a Texas court has made a preliminary finding that the government did not comply with certain technical and procedural requirements and has halted implementation of the program nationwide until the matter can be resolved through the courts. Until the injunction is lifted, the government will not be accepting or processing any applications under the Immigration Accountability Executive Action program announced by the President which includes DAPA and an expansion of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Notwithstanding, you may be eligible to seek a provisional unlawful presence waiver. To obtain the waiver, you will need prove that your US citizen parent or spouse will experience an extreme hardship if you are not allowed to re-enter the US, after your departure for your interview. You can file the waiver application in the US and wait here while until it is approved. This waiver, if approved, will pardon all periods of unlawful presence in the US and will allow you to leave the US and complete consular processing of your immigrant visa in your home country. Regards, Sasha Watson, Esq. HAWM, PLLC

Dear Parent in Distress:

Please submit your letters to letters@hawmlaw.com. Each month a reader’s selection will be chosen for response.

You may be eligible for Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA), announced by the President on November 20, 2014. In order to obtain DAPA, you must prove: 1) that you are the parent of a US citizen or permanent resident; 2) you have been continuously present in the US since January 1, 2010; and 3) otherwise qualify (e.g. no criminal convictions).

Obama Immigration Plan Delayed by Court Injunction Appeals in New Orleans. The Federal Judge stalled Obama Immigration Executive Action as a result of a lawsuit filed by 26 states (including Texas) claiming they will “suffer irreparable harm in this case.” Judge Hanen, an outspoken critic of the Obama administration, found that the states had satisfied the minimum legal requirements to bring their lawsuit. As Judge Hanen issued an injunction to delay Obama Immigration Executive Action, he said the Obama administration had failed to comply with basic administrative procedures for putting such a sweeping program into effect.

his is not the first time where a lower court judge has blocked something or attempted to block something that ultimately is going to be lawful, and I’m confident that it is well within my authority.” – stated President Obama after a federal judge in Texas ordered a halt to the president’s executive actions on immigration. President Obama added, “I think that the law is on our side and history is on our side, we are going to appeal it.” “We are confident that the courts will ultimately side with the scores of legal experts, state leaders, city officials, and law enforcement leaders who say that these immigration initiatives are both in full compliance with law and deeply beneficial to our communities, society, and country,” said Marielena Hincapie of the National Immigration Law Center. President Obama is confident deferred action will be implemented for millions of immigrants because his administration will appealed the lower court injunction on his executive action plan. The White House said the U.S. Department of Justice will file an appeal, which will be heard by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of

When President Obama first implemented DACA – Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, a lawsuit was filed against him and he won and DACA was successfully implemented. The Republicans have criticized President Obama confident on immigration and accused him of exceeding his executive action but many Republican Presidents in the past have used executive action for worse actions – such as invading countries. President Obama confident on immigration policy he has implemented will protect millions of hard-working undocumented immigrants from deportation, keep them united with their U.S. citizen children, and help young immigrants work and attend college. In the end, President Obama confident on immigration will improve our economy and our tradition of embracing immigrants. Federal Judge Hanen injunction on Obama Immigration Executive Action will be a temporary roadblock as the U.S. Supreme Court will rule that President Obama is within his executive authority to issue his executive action of deportation protection for nearly 5 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S. For more information, contact Gail Law Firm: Copyright © Law Offices of Gail S. rlando, FL, 2/22/2015: The historic story of the struggle for voter’s rights in Central Florida was on center stage this Sunday evening. The names from Central Florida’s Civil Rights past, and their stories of incredible courage to ensure that people of color had a voice, were shared very passionately by the cast of A Vote: A Voice. A VOTE: A VOICE, a stage play written by Florida Senator Geraldine F. Thompson, shines light on the struggle for voting rights in the Orlando area. The riveting stories of legal cases handled by Paul C. Perkins, Sr., the sacrifices of July Perry in Ocoee, Harry T. and Harriet Moore in Mims, and other Central Florida voting rights activists are told through theatrical performances, song, music and dance. Directed by Anthony Major, Associate Professor of Film and African Studies at the University of Central Florida, this works expands the body of knowledge available regarding the civil rights struggle in Florida. I was truly moved by the story of the Crooms’ family and their move to Orlando, FL. A move that would inspire many to follow. The play’s storyline was greatly enhanced by the performance of the young men and women of the Nu Look dance company. Their performance throughout the show was excellent. However, their performance during the play’s depiction of the violence shown toward blacks being lynched was especially moving – it is was done with excellence, but it worked to ensure audience members grasped the pain and hurt that African Americans must have felt during this period. The play drew to a close by tying past history to current day with the playwright joining the cast in the production to portray herself, and share the source of her inspiration for serving the community. Senator Geraldine Thompson drew from the book she wrote in 2003, “Black America: Orlando, FL” as a basis for the play. The authenticity of the story struck a personal chord with me during the scene about the bombing of the Moore’s home. In the scene the first responders to the scene had to take the Moore’s to a doctor that would care for African Americans. They drove them to Sanford to see Dr. Starks. Dr. Starks was my doctor during my childhood in Oviedo, FL. As this story is based upon the real life heroes of the struggle for a voice for Black people, this scene created a real personal connection for me to the storyline, and I am sure that other points throughout the show provided the same opportunity for other audience members. Many of the actors and actresses in the piece were from the local area, and were excellent in their portrayal of these great Americans. I hope that we haven’t seen the last of this production, and I would strongly encourage all of Central Florida to attend the incredible telling of Orlando’s Civil Rights struggle for the vote and equity during the 1960s. It was truly a must see for me!!

Fugees Rapper Pras Shifts the Paradigm with ‘Sweet Micky For President’ Documentary By Melissa Thomas he massive 7.0 scale earthquake in 2010 forever changed Haiti, killing thousands and displacing millions. The beleaguered nation needed help, and the world had answered—to the tune of over $9 billion U.S. in aid. However, ten months later, things still had not changed. Pras Michel, one-third of rap trio The Fugees and second-generation Haitian, was frustrated for his beloved homeland and wanted to do something about it. “The

Reaching the Next Generation “Sixty-five percent of the Haitian population is twenty-five and under,” Pras noted during Friday’s interview, “so I’m trying to reach them.” Not only did he set his sights on the young, but the diaspora as well. In fact, his primary tactic in garnering support for Martelly was through overseas campaigning— across the U.S. and Canada. “These are the people who will call back home and tell their mothers, their fathers...to vote for Martelly,” Pras gushed in the documentary during the campaign. However, he also wants the documentary to educate and inform his people in the diaspora about their homeland and its history, which is especially important for those who are of Haitian descent and have never been there. The 2015 Miami International Film Festival was instrumental to that end. The packed premiere drew Miami’s sprawling Haitian community, including Haiti Ambassador-at-Large Dr. Rudolf Moise. The MIFF team touched on that point while introducing the movie: “We’ve been eager to show this movie for some time now... [It] won the Jury Prize and Audience Prize at Slamdance, but it’s one thing to show the movie in Utah...and another to show it here in Miami.”

one thing I wasn’t going to do was make a song,” Pras jabbed on Friday during a behind the scenes interview at the 2015 Miami International Film Festival. He instead approached filmmaker Ben Patterson to create a video showing Haiti’s beautiful landscape and people. “Our media gives us a one-sided view of Haiti,” Patterson said, “and Pras wanted to change that.” However, things changed when Pras approached Haiti’s controversial kompas icon Michel “Sweet Micky” Martelly and proposed that he run for president.

In the end the audience came away collectively wowed, and with good reason. There is no story more compelling to the human spirit than that of an eccentric misfit rising to the occasion, even if reluctantly, of tackling a challenge thrice his or her size, no matter what consequences may follow. “Sweet Micky For President” presents such a tale with a raw energy that only the people of Haiti can bring.

A Documentary is Born Patterson filmed the entire saga, from the moment Pras decided to take action to the end of the monumental election, mixing in healthy portions of Haiti’s tumultuous yet barely known history and breathtaking landscape images with Pras and Martelly’s suspenseful political campaign for the presidency, which includes their fateful collision with Pras’ band mate and longtime friend Wycliffe Jean, who was simultaneously running for president. Thanks to co-producer Karyn Rachtman and Patterson, “Sweet Micky For President” is a thrilling movie—not just a traditional documentary, but an inspiriting narrative, plot and all. According to Miami New Times, “‘Sweet Micky For President’ may be among the greatest documentaries of all time.” Viewers experience awe, apprehension, and far more laughter than they would expect from a political story, primarily because of Pras and Martelly, who hold nothing back when they speak against Haiti’s political flaws or their detractors. Also, like any well-written fictional feature, Patterson skillfully narrows his protagonist’s vignette, engaging the viewer’s emotional investment in Martelly, who starts out looking outrageous and highly unlikely in his “Sweet Micky” stage exploits.

LEADING LADIES BEHIND THE SCENES AND ON THE FRONT LINE Welcome to my column on Leading Ladies behind the Scenes. Our column will introduce you to leading ladies who have branded their own recognition and blazed their own trails. These ladies work behind the scenes but manage the front line with high impact results. You might have heard their names or admired their work, but never met them up close and personal. Our column will give you the chance to meet these ladies so you can place a face with the name and their trendsetting work in our community, various organizations and in business. Thank you for celebrating their value with us.

Nouchelle Hastings: “Girl What Do You Bring to the Table?”

Hylton Adamson Watson (Partners of HAWM Law) “Having an Attorney When It Matters” hodini wrote a song in 1984 “Friends” the song is a combination of statements and questions – Friends, how many of us have them? Friends, ones we can depend on, Friends how many of us have them?, Friends before we go any further, let’s be friends …. Friends, how many of us have them? This song holds significance for me and comes on the heels self-evaluation. I asked myself if people were polled what percentage would say that I’m a friend. Then it hit me that the term friend often used but seldom lived up to should be defined. I thought about an example of a friend and all at once three ladies danced in my mind. We refer to them as the dream team and giant slayers but they call each other friend; they are nothing short of amazing Karlyn R. Hylton, Alisia Mary Adamson and Sasha Watson.

… strong, sexy, sultry ladies getting results and making progress. They knew from law school days that they would start an allwomen law firm. The plan was to get some experience under their belt and thus they went to work in their related areas of law and would come together at the right time to begin the firm. Karlyn landed at the State Attorney’s Office for Dade County, Sasha in corporate law at Williams, Wilson & Sexton P.A., a Tallahassee based firm with a new branch in Orlando and Alisia to the Public Defender’s Office here in Orlando. These women who together traveled to all the law conventions kept the values of BLSA and advance the merit of National Chapter Winner, Regional Chapter Winner and Florida State Organization of the Year – they work just as hard if not harder now than they did as law students in need of passing the bar.

Alisia Mary Adamson, Esq. was recognized as “The Nation’s Best Advocate” by the National Bar Association and IMPACT at its National Top 40 Lawyers Under 40 awards ceremony in July, 2012. Attorney Adamson was recently selected as one of Florida State University’s top 30 Under 30 alumni in honor of her achievements and contributions to her profession community and university. She is also a legal analyst for WESH News. Sasha Watson, Esq. is Chair of the Immigration Practice Group at Hylton, Adamson, Watson, PLLC. Sasha really lends her extensive support to protect the vulnerable in legal immigration matters. Moreover, she has been admitted as a testifying expert on behalf of the Florida Bar on immigration related issues. As an immigration attorney, Ms. Watson has consulted on international immigration reform projects on behalf of international countries evaluating and reforming their own immigration policies.

I was there on 10-10-10 when these smoking guns opened the doors to their East Colonial office and like Virginia Slims, they’ve come along way baby! These ladies remind me of the intro into Charlie’s Angles as you call out their name one-by-one they turn up one dynamic expression after another. They really are our legal smoking guns … brilliance, talent, charm and humility. These ladies are not only leading but winning. They win cases that other attorney’s take their hats off to. They are impeccable and available to review your case. “Our purpose is to take a genuine interest in our clients, understand their intended outcomes, and exceed their expectations - The Hylton Adamson Watson team is dedicated to protecting your rights. We aim to provide superior legal services effectively and efficiently while maintaining the highest standard of professional integrity for our community, we will continue our longstanding tradition of social and civic responsibility. Our mission is to provide our clients with high quality, innovative, costeffective legal representation in the areas of criminal defense, family law, immigration law, personal injury, bankruptcy and foreclosure. Our vision is to be the prominent criminal, immigration and family firm in the Central Florida market, by providing high quality, innovative, cost effective legal representation while maintaining superior customer service and ethical standards.” – HAWM Partners

If you’ve ever sat in a women’s circle or small group you’ve heard that women cannot work together or women don’t support each other or women tear each other down and sleep with your man. Well that’s 100% FALSE! Women work, fellowship and build together as is supported by the evidence of these amazing women who met while attending Florida State University College of Law. They were each heavily involved in (BLSA) which is the Pre-Law Division of the Black Law Student Association an organization whose focus is to ensure that all students interested in law are being adequately informed, fostered, and empowered with the necessary tools to be successful in Law School. Having these ladies in our community is a huge blessing; they are philanthropists, sit -`````in teachers and have adopted schools, they have a Title 1 Partnership with OCPS and partner with Translife Organ/tissue & transplant services. HAWM Law is the first and only Workplace Partner for Life with Translife. These ladies although cute, appealing and dainty, fight like bulls for their clients. They know what’s going on in their office and if one is caught up with a deadline the other knows how to cover. They are the only firm with a personal P. Jefferson Mascot who keeps the environment wholesome and the partners smiling and balanced.

The attorneys at Hylton Adamson Watson are highly skilled in various areas of legal practice. Allow this perfect combination of diverse legal experience to work for you. Hylton Adamson Watson turns five years old this year and like 10-10-10, I plan to be a part of the celebration. I was impressed with them before really knowing them and as a writer, admirer and woman; it is my honor to give this space to these dynamos’ in my Women’s History Month column. May they collectively and individually embrace what’s next for them - for Karlyn and her husband, the expectation of motherhood (congratulations) as a group this baby represents the new birth this firm will achieve. The best and greatest days are ahead of them. More exposure, higher legal plateaus, deeper wisdom, major speaking platforms, major publications and write-ups – it’s just the beginning of all things swinging in their direction. These leading ladies are main stage stars and household names hawmlaw.com Central Florida and South Florida

finals, not even having a close match, they faced Guyana Floodlights II. In the final the Guyana Floodlights II team were put to bat by OSCL Masters and they soon after started scoring heavily. Shyam Tirloki took the ball, bowled a few wides striving for that great delivery; and he did, bowling Madhu, who scored 145 runs not out in previous match. Thereafter, Guyana collapsed only scoring 83 runs all out. OSCL Masters overtook that total without much fuss, losing two wickets. Shavie Churaman scored 44 not out and Syam Tirlokie was judged Man of The Match for his four wickets. Ramcho Singh took three wickets, via his gentle turners.

World Cup Cricket

rlando Softball Cricket League’s (OSCL) inaugural Orlando Cup, concluded on Sunday March 8th. It was a thrilling and resounding success; huge crowds for three days, concurrent with Pagwah celebrations. Dave “Radiator” Singh was the event co-coordinator. Teams came from Guyana, South Florida and New York.

England is out of the World Cup; they were trounced by Bangladesh, who in the process romped into the quarter finals. Bangladesh scored a total of 275 runs to defeat England with Mahmudullah scoring 103 of their total. England scored 260 runs. Bangladesh also beat Scotland and Afghanistan in their romp to the quarter finals. New Zealand is unbeaten at this point with 5 wins, including a tense win over co-host Australia, overtaking the Aussies modest 151, nine wickets down.

OSCL Allstars won their first two games, proceeding to the quarterfinals; Rokesh Mahase is a genuine, still maturing, superstar of Orlando, a world class act of softball cricket. In the first two matches, he scored heavily, in one electrifying over of the third match, he took two wickets, beat the batsman with the hat-trick ball, getting the edge and the wicket, the next ball. His mom, Devi, usually laid-back, was quite emotional and excited, as was the whole crowd. Later, he leaped at the longoff boundary, took a high catch thus robbing the batsman of a six. Unfortunately however, OSCL Allstars lost the match.

West Indies, famous for crashing and burning, whenever Chris Gayle did not score heavily, did so. Chris Gayle scored 215 runs against Zimbabwe; the fastest double century in World Cup history. However, the West Indies are staring into the abyss, they gave undefeated India a scare, scoring a modest 182 runs, (the 1983 World Cup final score.) India however limped back over their total six wickets down to win the match, West Indies now have two wins in five matches.

In the semi-finals, Orlando Allstars fought a keen contest; all drama, culminating in a tie, Super over! In lighting conditions deemed unsafe by the umpire, more drama and Orlando Allstars lost. Ajay, Speedy, Navin, and Ivan bowled their hearts out, Stevie Harrichand was greased lightning behind the keeper, picking up cleanly and returning on the rise.

Pakistan have their own version of crash and burn usually calling to captain Misbah-ul-haq or Afridi to prop them up. However they staged a stunning victory over South Africa, batting first, scoring a modest 222 runs, they bowled with verve and vim therefore scuttling the South Africans to total of 202 runs all out. Pakistan now have 3 wins in five matches.

Guyana Allstars faced the New York Allstars in the final; New Australia have lost the one match to the Kiwis and are still York Allstars scored 192 runs while in reply Guyana Allstars the main force to be reckoned with in this year’s World Cup. who stuttered but in the early part of the match recovered to India are quietly five and 0, including a thrashing of the South win the game by four wickets. Africans, their gentle pacers and spinners have adapted well, In the Masters tournament Orlando Masters romped into the the whole team is peaking nicely.

Orlando City Soccer, Continued from page 1 Trailing by a goal in the first minute of injury time, Kaká drove a 20-yard free kick off the chest of N.Y.C.F.C. defender Jeb Brovsky and into the back of the net to salvage a 1-1 draw in the Major League Soccer debut of both teams as a majority of the 62,510 mostly ecstatic fans who were listed in attendance roared their approval.

René Higuita. The N.Y.C.F.C defense was on its heels for much of the first half, disorganized and rattled at times, and goalkeeper Josh Saunders suffered the most. In the 15th minute, he sustained a contusion on his head when he became entangled with Orlando defender Seb Hines and collided with the goal post. He remained in the game after receiving medical attention, with blood seeping down the side of his head. According to M.L.S. Commissioner Don Garber, who spoke to reporters at halftime, Saunders went through the league’s concussion protocol, and Garber said he was satisfied that Saunders did not sustain a concussion.

Update: Orlando City secured their first Major League Soccer win over Huston Dynamo with a 1 – 0 score. They will play Vancouver Whitecaps on March 21st at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando before they move-on to play Montreal Impact in Montreal on March 28th.
