David & Robert Mullings, Dr. Fidel Goldson, Sasha Watson and the many other guest speakers giving back the 3 T’s – Time, Talent, and Treasure; most importantly TIME. We are a proud people, proud of our Nationality, proud of our national colors, proud of our individual achievements. We have individually done, and will continue to do, great things locally, nationally, and internationally. However, just think of the possibilities if we come together, support each other and work together to make the changes we want to see in the world for the next generation. I truly believe that with unity, community support, and efforts to give back there is nothing we cannot achieve as a people. I will close with the words of the great Jack Welsh, “Before you become a leader, success is all about growing yourself. After you become a leader, success is about growing others.”
University of Central Florida Caribbean Students Association at the FCSA Conference such as Stetson University and the University of Central Florida, and most recently at the Florida Caribbean American Students Conference and we were blown away by their talent, their passion, their intelligence and their commitment to showcasing their national colors. The enthusiam showcased by these students during the roll call at the FCSA Conference was a prime example and simply amazing. As a past and current president of the Guyanese American Cultural Association and chairperson of the Heads of Caribbean Association in Central Florida, I can safely say we don’t get it. We talk the talk, we get on our soap-boxes and articulate about our respective National Association mission statements and vision statements and all the things that could be done or should be done by our Governments back home, be it Guyana, Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad & etc – are we doing it here? Are we reaching back into the community and really offering a hand, are we mentoring our next generation and taking an active role in the activities at our local community elementary schools, middle schools, high schols or even Colleges? NO! We all, myself included, are busy doing our individual things, running our businesses, networking in the community, attending Association events and National Galas, failing to make an effort to engage with the next generation of community leaders. Our National Associations produce major fundraising events and activities, then we utilize the funds to sponsor projects back home. While this is great, we should take a look at our local students right here in Florida and see if they have needs that we can help them with. At the FCSA Conference it was impressive and inspirational to see companies like Caribbean Airlines, Victoria Mutual, Laparkan, VP Records, Grace and others; individuals like Marlon Hill,

The Republicans are Wrong Again about the Affordable Care Act to insurance policies, there were still hundreds of thousands of residents who still signed up for the ACA on the federal marketplace. Even when governors promoted negative talking points about Obamacare, the residents still signed up.
By Roger Caldwell
s President Obama takes his victory lap for enrolling 7.1 million Americans with the Affordable Care Act, the Republicans are demoralized and angry. With the horrendous roll out, and the initial problems with the operating systems with the computer networks, the Republicans had written off the system as a complete failure. They expected the citizens to believe their fabricated tall tales, even though there were millions of Americans who needed health insurance.
Most pundits and probably many in the president’s administration did not expect the ACA to hit its targeted projection of 7 million by the closing sign up date. At the end of February there were only 4.2 million citizens enrolled in the ACA. By March the 27th there were 6 million signed up and the last day was the 31st. Through sheer resolve, and special blessings, the president was able to enroll 7.1 million to make the ACA a success. The president surprised everyone and now the Republicans will have to eat distasteful crow, or humble pie. The Republicans are speechless and whatever they say will sound dumb and stupid. This will be very difficult for the Republicans to swallow, and Obama is ecstatic.
The first statement we can expect from the Republicans is that the numbers are wrong, and they cannot trust the president’s calculations. The next excuse they can use is that 20% of the residents’ signing up has not paid their monthly premiums; The Republicans spent all their time trying to repeal a federal therefore they are not official members of the ACA. Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery & Grill Grand Opening On March 29th the weather on the east side of Orlando consisted of torrential rainfall and almost monsoon like conditions. However, the warmth, hospitality and family friendly atmosphere created by the owners of the new Golden Krust, Zorida and Ravi Manoo, along with the corporate support of Golden Krust and the Hawthorne family, was unmistakably Caribbean. Attendees were welcomed to the new restaurant by the rhythmic sounds of live reggae music, face painting and an unlimited supply of hot, fresh and tasty authentic Caribbean beef patties, jerk wings, bun & cheese and much, much more. The Grand opening of the new restaurant was attended by members of the Hawthorne family, Golden Krust Corporate, local families and well-wishers. Mr. Lowell Hawthorne (GK president & CEO), along with Omar Hawthorne (CGK Director of Franchise Development and Community Affairs), Latalya Morrison (GK Marketing & PR Manager), Cassandra Hawthorne-Lee (GK Regional Franchise Director Florida), Kevin Lee (General Manager of GK’s Tamarac), Former Police Chief & Mayoral Candidate Val Demings, all came out in support of this dynamic couple as the continue to grow from strength to strength in the Orlando community and in the Golden Krust family. This new GK bakery and grill marks the third (3rd) location opened by the Manoo family and is a direct reflection of their hard work, commitment to franchise and community support.
Golden Krust Celebrates 25 years of Superior Quality n Overview Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery & Grill is the brainchild of Ephraim and Mavis Hawthorne; founders of Hawthorne & Son’s Bakery in St. Andrew, Jamaica and parents of the present owners. The Jamaican bakery successfully supplied local communities, schools and institutions with a variety of products such as patties, breads, buns, rock cakes and other baked delights. They had no idea then that their dream would one day blossom into a now global business with 120 stores in nine states and counting. Golden Krust as we know it today began in 1989 when President & CEO Lowell Hawthorne, his wife Lorna, along with four of his siblings and their spouses who migrated to the United States from Jamaica, decided to continue the family tradition started by their father. Lowell Hawthorne, a graduate of Bronx Community College and Lehman College, who was on child care leave from his accounting job with the NYPD opened the first store in a small shop on East Gun Hill Road in the Bronx. The Golden Krust Bakery became so popular that Lowell left the police department to devote his full attention to the business. By 1996 the family owned seventeen (17) stores throughout New York City and Connecticut. The business became so successful that the Hawthorne’s were encouraged to create franchises. In that same year, Golden Krust became the first Caribbean-owned business in the U.S. to be granted a franchise license. The pivotal year of 1996 also signified the relocation of the manufacturing operations to the South Bronx, and the eventual purchase of the entire block from 172nd Street to Claremont Parkway on Park Avenue. This move was necessary because the business and its franchises had begun to grow so rapidly that the small Gun Hill Road store could no longer keep pace with the demand.

Today, Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery & Grill is serving up authentic Caribbean cuisine in the states of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Florida, Maryland, Massachusetts and North Carolina. The company plans to expand to several other states within the next five years. The Golden Krust franchise concept has evolved over the years and now encompasses a wider variety of Caribbean fare including Jamaican-style patties (turnovers) which are available in eight different flavors. It is the Jamaican-style patty that Golden Krust has become synonymous for in the United States, having established a distinctly home-made taste of freshly seasoned beef, chicken, shrimp, vegetable, and soy and spinach fillings wrapped in a flaky baked crust. Following closely on the heels of the patty was the addition of sumptuous Caribbean meals to the menu, including but not limited to, delicacies such as braised oxtail, curry goat, jerk chicken served up with rice and peas and vegetables. Honors & Awards The success of the company can be attributed to the visionary leadership of its President Lowell Hawthorne. Golden Krust has caught the attention of many major media players and has been featured on Fox 5 News, WABC-TV, New York 1 and on CNN. Extensive features have also been written about the company in Forbes Magazine, The New York Times, New York Daily News, QSR Magazine, Black Enterprise Magazine, Crain’s New York Business Magazine and several local and community newspapers. In 1995 Forbes Magazine featured Golden Krust as one of the

Nouchelle Hastings: “Girl What Do You Bring to the Table?”
Guenet Gittens-Roberts, Executive, Publisher, Community Advocate ave you ever asked yourself if you believe in coincidence or divine connections? Coincidence is a remarkable concurrence of events or circumstances without apparent causal connection. Divine Connection means of, relating to, or proceeding directly from God or a godly thing. Whichever is your preference there is always that one thing to make you realize that the events of your life or encounter are way beyond your doing. I believe strongly that coincidences are Divine Connections.
Asian, the Hispanic, Brazilian…..you get where I’m going. Like everyone knows Mike, everyone knows G and if you don’t, then you should and will. You will know her because she will not stop doing what makes the world better and that is giving love and being positive; not to mention she is a wealth of knowledge and intellect. There are many things I could share about her professional life, but you see that on display daily. She is the backbone to what I call the camel hump businesses – once she connects with it, the business grows exponentially.
This was the case when I met Guenet GittensRoberts. Community Involvement Ever mindful of the importance of a giving back to the community, Golden Krust established the Mavis & Ephraim Hawthorne Golden Krust Scholarship Foundation to assist young people to receive a tertiary education. Each year the Foundation awards scholarships to deserving high school seniors on their way to college who reside in the communities in which Golden Krust operates. To date over 100 scholarships have been disbursed to aspiring students.
Retail Division In recent years the company has begun to make serious headway into the retail market and is steadily becoming a leading contender for a slice of the frozen hand-held product market. Golden Krust’s oven baked beef, chicken and vegetable patties can now be found in major supermarket chains and club stores nationwide. Microwaveable packages of the beef patty were recently introduced on the retail market and has achieved phenomenal success. Golden Krust products can also be found in the New York school system, correctional facilities, food service institutions, university’s and at major outdoor events. It is believed that in addition to franchising, the retail division will allow Golden Krust to achieve its vision of taking the taste of the Caribbean to the world.

4 Artist: Joseph Fonseca Title: “El Cabillito de Palo” Video Link: www.junglevibes.tv (Top 5 Video Picks) JVTV Review: This song has an infectious beat. Every once in a while a Spanish song will hit the charts and become a hit worldwide. When Don Omar’s hit single, Danza Kaduro first came on the Caribbean scene in 2010 it was automatically accepted even though the song was in Spanish. It is safe to state that this video will make a similar impact.
5 Artist: Alkaline Title: “Gyal Bruk Out” Video Link: www.junglevibes.tv (Top 5 Video Picks) JVTV Review: Meet Dancehall’s youngest and newest lyricist. At the age of 19, Alkaline has a string of hits that goes hard in dances across the U.S. The newest craze in dancehall these days is to tattoo your eyeballs just to be different and stand out from the rest. Keep an eye out (no pun intended) for this artist if he doesn’t go blind in the near future. Promoters are having a hard time trying to book this artist for shows across the U.S. and U.K. Watch the only Caribbean Music Television show in Central Florida every Sunday at 4:00pm on Brighthouse Networks Channel 49. Fit Like A Ras By Jeremy Roberts - NASM
K, de headline is a little misleadin’: is mo’ like “How Fih Look Good Wid Li’l Bit a Clothes On”. After all, as far as de ladies go, goin’ from “li’l bit a clothes on” to naked ain’t really providing more information, and any new information provided pon de men dem …. Well, ain’ no machine in de gym could do anyting bout dat!
gatherer, so 1. Lotsa walking, following prey 2. Bursts of intense sprinting to catch the prey 3. Eating mostly meat (and mostly raw!) and fruits like berries dat dey come across as dey walk, or nuts. After agriculture was adopted, folks settle down, stayed in one place, started eating mostly grains, and meat was a rarity. So Paleo folks feel seh dat dis explains a big part of the decline in stature and general health markers (the fossil records indicate more tooth decay and weaker bone densities for humans after the advent of agriculture). Dey also seh dat we haven’t adapted to this change, as 10,000 years ain’t enough time to effect the change. Evolution is a slow process.
Given this background, the Paleo advocates suggest trying to eat and live as close to dis as possible. Based on personal results, dey see that this way of eating and living provides much improved health benefits over the usual US diet (referred to as SAD – Standard American Diet) and lifestyle But to step back a bit, de reason fih writing dis is dat while, in (referred to as sittin’ pon yuh fat ass everyday)! It also de las’ 2 articles, we defined “fit” as being physically prepared achieves (they claim) better results than the usual low fat, for “your race”, whatever it is, and den we say mos’ people plant based advice. “race” is just fuh live a long and healthy life, some people might want a little bit more. An’ I suspect a lot of people wan’ My personal experience is dat dis way is a better way dan de achieve dat goal in de title – or at leas’ de li’l bit a clothes ting. low fat ting. I spent years avoiding red meat, and any fat I So leh we talk bout dat lickle bit. could find, and while I never did blow up too big, I never did see no 6-pack neither! Now, at de ripe old age of 50 something De title seh “Part 1”. De reason fuh dat is because I feel it’s (mih nah tell ayuh/allyuh/unna/wunna zackly how ol’!), mih necessary to bring in some backgroun’. I like to understand got one, or at leas’ a 4 pack, mos’ a de time. why I doin’ anything I doin’, and I figure mos’ people stay so too. So here we go …… Now yuh might be aksin’: wha kinda ting Paleo does eat? My breakfast, as an example, is either eggs, bacon, smoked Fuh mos a we, lookin’ good naked means we gots to lose some salmon, corned beef, all fry up in coconut oil (coconut oil is a fat. Almos’ all a we also got to gain some muscle. And there are big ting wid Paleo folks), and always wid onion, green pepper millions of ways to make dem two tings happen. I’ve tried many and grape tomatoes. Sometimes ah might add lickle almonds of them myself .. still tryin’ really. My current belief follows what’s to de mix. Everything should be as close to de farm as poscalled “Paleo” or “primal” eating/lifestyle. If you’ve never heard sible, and organic wherever feasible{ no preservatives, antiabout it, dis article is an intro. I’m gonna be sloppy today and not biotics and tings like dat). Lunch would be any kinda meat put in a link to support everyt’ng ah seh, but most of the support- (yes, includin’ pork: ise a different kinda Dread. New Age ing info can be found at one of these sites: www.marksdailyapple, Rastafari!) wid tings like broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, turwww.robbwolf.com, http://ultimate paleoguide.com/. nips and suh. No rice, potatoes, or wheat products (pasta). Dinner Is basically de same as lunch, but smaller. In between Essentially, de Paleo folks feel dat humans were at their meals, some kinda high protein food, or nuts. Yuh really ain’t givin’ up much in terms of taste, although we all got we ting we gon miss. Fuh me, droppin’ bread was a haard hard something!! But de res a de diet does mek up fuh dat. To be able to eat straight ribs, or a steak, or a goat curry (or is it curr y goat?)…..priceless!
Paleo transformations physical prime during the Paleolithic era (from about 2.6 million years ago to about 10,00 years ago). Fossil records indicate that men at that time were on average about 5’9”, which don’t sound like a lot, except that it then declined consistently, to about 5’ 3”, following the advent of agriculture until finally rising again to be about roughly the same as back in the Paleo era. The theory is dat the advent of agriculture brought about a major diet and lifestyle change that was less than optimal for human health, growth and development.
As I read more bout Paleo, de debate pickin’ up within de community about whether Paleo Man was really low carb, and whether that’s really the way to go. Regardless, de one ting all Paleo folks agree wid is dis: check tings out fuh yuhself. We all different. Some a we gon do great wid low carb. Some will need more carbs. Find your ting. I believe almost everyone who strugglin’ to lose weight will lose it on a low carb diet, and most people don’ even want to go back to nuff carbs afterward. Oh, and above all else: avoid sugar like de plague! Dat one ain got no exceptions.
(Part 2 gon deal wid de odda part a dis: wha exercise regimen So, wha’ was de differences? Fus, Paleo man was a hunter- gon really mek de body look good nekkid)
