@GailSeeram FREE In-Office Consultation FREE Live Chat – visit www.GailLaw.com nited States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is an agency within the Department of Homeland Security. The agency is responsible for keeping America’s borders safe and secure while encouraging legitimate travel and trade. To accomplish this, CBP officers must screen all arriving people, goods and vehicles to make sure they meet all requirements for entry into the United States. The Congress of the United States has authorized CBP to enforce all homeland security-related laws and laws of other federal agencies at the border and to conduct searches and examinations necessary to assure compliance with those laws. CBP’s broad authority therefore allows them to conduct searches of people and their baggage, cargo, and means of transportation entering the United States.

CBP collects information about people traveling into and out of the United States. This includes basic biographic data, travel documents and their unique identifiers, where the traveler is staying in the U.S. and the planned purpose for the traveler’s visit. This information may be collected from a traveler at a port of entry, or, in the case of international air and sea travel, it may be collected before a traveler’s arrival in or departure from the U.S. This information is used to determine the admissibility of aliens and to effectively and efficiently enforce U.S. laws at the border. Why you may be chosen for secondary inspection (questioned separately in an office) • Your travel documents are incomplete, or you do not have the proper documents or visa; • You have previously violated one of the laws CBP enforces; • Your name matches a person of interest in one of the government’s enforcement databases; or • You have been selected for a random search. It is at this point of entry into the United States that nonimmigrant visas (such as a B-1/B-2 tourist visa) and lawful permanent residents are inspected to determine whether they will be admitted to the United States. There are various reason and laws that may be applied to find such a person inadmissible into the United States. The holder of a visa or permanent resident card (green card) is not automatically allowed to enter the U.S. – he or she must be inspected and found to be admissible into the U.S. by CBP officers. If a non-immigrant visa holder is found inadmissible and not allowed in the U.S. then they will be turned away at the port of entry. If a permanent resident is found inadmissible (due to length of stay outside the U.S. or criminal grounds) then they will be paroled into the U.S. pending removal proceedings at the Immigration Court.

If you are subject to inspection, you should be treated in a courteous, dignified, and professional manner.

If you are subject to inspection, you should be treated in a courteous, dignified, and professional manner. Is Governor Scott Following the Law with the Sunshine Laws? Adam Hollingsworth, admitted he lied on his application to Enterprise Florida, a public-private economic development agency. Hollingsworth’s predecessor, Steven MacNamara, resigned in a 2012 scandal, where he helped companies secure lucrative no-bid contracts.

By Roger Caldwell

veryone in the country knows that things get lost in Florida. We are not saying that all our Republican leaders are corrupt, but some are in jail now, and others had to resign from their jobs quickly. Everyone remembers when Ex-Governor Jeb Bush lost three counties of ballots, so his brother could win the presidential election, but it was a mistake.

As our governor runs for office again, it is essential that Floridians wake up, and remember that corruption does not fall far from the tree. It takes a crook to know a crook, and this administration has a long line of illegal activity. Scott has always had problems with secret emails and the Sunshine Laws. The purpose of the Sunshine Laws is to create regulations which require openness and transparency in Florida government. Sunshine Laws make meetings, records, votes, and other official actions available for public observation, participation, and inspection.

But, Governor Scott likes things kept secret, and he especially Mistakes happen in Florida, and Governor Scott has never liked likes no-bid contracts for his friends. He definitely does not like the Sunshine Laws and regulations. Everyone knows that Scott has the media asking questions about “secret emails and secret always had issues with laws, and his company was involved in a $1.7 billion Medicare fraud settlement, but he was never charged with breaking any laws. Even at a deposition he invoked the Fifth Amendment 75 times, implying that he was never directly responsible for his company’s illegal activity.

The state of Florida must be asleep, but he won the election, and now it is not a big thing that he was connected to illegal activity.

As a result of Scott’s dark past many of the Republicans decided not to give him money for his first campaign, so his answer was to use his own money. The state of Florida must be asleep, but he won the election, and now it is not a big thing that he was connected to illegal activity. A number of Scott’s friends, appointments, and the Lieutenant Governor has ended up in jail, or left their position in a hurry, but no one is questioning his character or integrity.

accounts.” The media has found some secret emails where large companies such as Blue Cross, Florida Crystals, Florida Power and Light gave $100,000 each for a Mansion project. In all probability, no one broke any laws, but it makes you wonder if these companies get special favors for being a great friend.

In 2014, there are two Republicans running for governor, even though one says he is a Democrat. Corruption is running rampant On August 27, 2014, Scott’s appointee to the state’s Express- in the state, but if you don’t vote, things will remain secretive, and way Authority, Scott Batterson, was convicted on charges of nothing will change. Celebrating Cultures - Started as National Hispanic Heritage Week back in 1968 by President Lyndon Johnson, the annual celebration and observance was expanded to Hispanic Heritage Month in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan. The day September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries – Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Additionally, September 16th and 18th are recognized as the independence days for Mexico and Chile respectively and Columbus Day is also on October 12th. According to the Census, over 50 million people or 16% of the United States population are of Hispanic or Latino origin.

Trinidad and Tobago Association of Central Florida (TTAC) Independence Gala n August 23rd the Trinidad and Tobago Association of Central Florida (TTAC) hosted their Independence Gala at the Double Tree Sea World Hilton Hotel. This was a spectacular event presented in true Trinidadian style and colors. Attendees were treated to an evening of recognition, scholarship, culture and true Trini spirit; it was a sea of ‘Red, Black and White’ from formal gowns’ to white suites with red ties

and even the President’s (Mr. John ‘Tobago’ Joseph) red hat; all made for a grand event. The message delivered by the keynote speaker, Mr. Clive Osboune, retired teacher of Broadcast Journalism and current Radio personality, was on-point and extremely informational. Caribbean Airlines, Mrs. Kaye Chung, was also in attendance to provide both greetings and support from the management and stall of Caribbean Airlines.

Fitness Myth Busting #1: Fast Food Is Bad For You K, so we know if you go to McDonald’s and eat 5 Big Macs and large fries and giant soda, t’ings nah gon go too good. It’s hard to actually predict what will happen to any one person, but it’s unlikely that you’ll be doing yourself any health favors with that diet. However, that doesn’t prove that “Fast Food Is Bad”. It only proves that a bad diet is bad for you. So as we all know, de Dread like definitions. Fus, wha’s “fas’ food”? We generally pick pon places like McDonald’s, Burger King and such., but that only gives examples. I figure “fas’ food” means it’s already prepared, more or less, and you just getting’ a assembled meal, rather than something built from whatever “scratch” might mean nowadays. So basically, it don’t tek too long between order and delivery of the food.

fat or unhealthy or both. What do we mean by “unhealthy”? Probbly something like raising bad cholesterol, or blood pressure. So let’s go with two separate meanings: fat and raising LDL and blood pressure. We have enough info to know that there are many people who have eaten nothing but fast food and lost weigh. Jared, the Subway guy, is a famous example. The movie “Fat Head” shows Tom Naughton’s transformation as he stayed on a diet of fast food, mostly at McDonald’s. He limited his calories and carbs but ate unlimited fat. He ended up losing weight and lowering his LDL cholesterol. The take away is: it ain’t the fastness of the food. It’s basically the same issue on all diets: reduce calories and carbs, maintain or increase exercise. My recommendations: Boston Market rotisserie chicken (any rotisserie chicken, really), with greens or mixed vegetables, burgers without buns, the salad from Chipotle, or Subway gives you the option of getting any sandwich as a salad.

Wid dat definition, obviously there’s nothing inherently problematic about food delivered in that way. It might not be the most wholesome, or best tasting, but you can eat a fairly healthy Gwaan go eat yuh fas’ food an don’ feel guilty. meal, and lose weight and Look Good Naked, eating fast food. GT Dread is an NASM CPT, who competes in Masters Track, But how about the other part of the statement: “bad for you”? Field Hockey and Weightlifting. He can be contacted at What does that mean? Well, it mos’ likely mean yuh gon get fitlikearas@gmail.com

Delta Xi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. organizes YOUTH AND LAW ENFORCEMENT n the evening of Thursday, September 4th, the Delta Xi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. organized a community forum titled, YOUTH AND LAW ENFORCEMENT. The event was held at FAMU College of Law. The purpose of this forum was to create an open dialogue between the Public and Law Enforcement surrounding our youth in light of the recent events in Ferguson, MO and other places. Discussion topics included, but were not limited to, Gang Violence, Law Enforcement practices, perceived Law Enforcement brutality, Community Involvement and relationship to Law Enforcement. Panelists for this community event included Orange County Sheriff, Jerry Demings; Orlando Chief of Police, John W. Mina; UCF Professor, Dr. Cynthia Schmidt; Dean of FAMU College of Law, LeRoy Pernell; and Director at Parramore Kidz Zone, Marvin Peoples. Stewart Moore, News Anchor at WESH Channel 2 News was the Moderator for the evening.

“The officers have told me they absolutely loved wearing a camera,” he said. He stated however that funding may become an issue as data storage could cost upward of $500,000 a year. Demings said his office is also looking into using body cams. The gentlemen of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity provided all guests with a packet that included a de-escalation chart to de-

pict what actions needed to be taken when encountered with law enforcement to avoid potential issues. This chart is especially beneficial to youth that don’t know the proper form of action when involved with an officer.

The forum started off with a video by Marvin Peoples, a youth leader in Paramore asking neighborhood kids their experiences with law enforcement. Most of their interactions were negative, they said in the video. A common theme of the night was the need for the community and law enforcement to work together. “I don’t view it as an us vs. them mentality,” said Sheriff Demings. “The entire community loses when you have animosity between the public and law enforcement.” When prompted, Chief Mina and Sheriff Demings commented on the use of body cameras for their officers. Chief Mina said he is a strong supporter of body cameras for officers, saying currently 50 officers are equipped with them as part of a pilot study.

Overall, the forum was attended by over 200 people and the dialogue between the public and panelist was very constructive. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity will be having more forums and community events in the coming months. They also have a youth program entitled, Y.M.O.D (Young Men of Distinction) that mentors boys in grades 7 – 12. Send an email to AlphaYMOD @gmail.com for more information.

Arts tournament, held at Disney’s Wide World of Sports, in Orlando, Florida, where she brought home Gold in Tae Kwon Do Olympic Sparring, Black Belt division. She was slated to fight in the featherweight division, but as of event time, there were defections in her weight class category, so she was forced to fight in the heavy weight division. Melissa fought against an individual from Puerto Rico, who was much bigger than her and had the distinct weight advantage. Melissa was down 5-0 in the early stages as her Puerto Rican opponent was using her weight to her advantage to push Melissa around and was hitting hard. However, Melissa’s coach told her to stay inside against the much bigger opponent, which Melissa expressed to the coach was a daunting task, because she literally had to support the girls weight. However, Melissa hung in there, stayed inside and got off the mat and battled back to tie the score 8-8, by scoring with combinations of different kicks, rocking her opponent at times. It was in the 3rd and final round that Melissa scored, with only seconds left on the clock, with a scintillating head kick to the opponent. This was an amazing fight for Melissa, she fought hard to clinch the win in an exciting and epic fashion. Melissa showed heart, spirit and determination to battle back after such a deficit, where it was easy to give in having to fight almost four weight divisions up. Kudos must also be given to her accomplished and decorated coach Ryon Frederick, who in training has always emphasized and practiced the back spin hook kick, which counts for the most amount of points in any one legal contact to the head and can light up the score board quickly. Melissa is currently a medical student studying at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida. Between studies and training, it is a possibility that she will represent Trinidad and Tobago in the upcoming CAC Games in Mexico, or the Commonwealth Games in Scotland, which is being considered as an alternative option. This all depends on her current university studies and how things materialize. For more pictures and details please visit our website at www.caribbeanamericanpassport.com

TIPS ON HOW TO RETAIN NUTRIENTS IN YOUR FOOD

M

ost people are not aware that cooking can destroy some of the nutrients in their food. However, there are ways that you can prepare your food to retain some of the valuable vitamins and minerals. Here are some tips: 1. Use fresh ingredients such as herbs and spices. 2. Choose dark leafy greens and orange vegetables because they are high in vitamins. 3. Steaming your vegetables is a good way to retain nutrients. 4. Don’t over cook your vegetables. Make sure they are still crunchy to help retain some of the vitamins and minerals. 5. Bake instead of fry. Baking helps to seal the nutrients. 6. Making a green smoothie with dark leafy greens like kale and spinach is a great way to retain your vitamins and minerals.

26

The American Cancer Society recommends that we should consume a certain amount of fruits and vegetables every day. Adding different fruits to your green smoothie like banana, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries or pineapple is a great way to make your smoothie tasty and delicious. This is also a quick and convenient way to get your servings of fruits and vegetables. Good health is your wealth. Jamaican-born Sandi Morais, is a graduate from Florida International University.
