Ramadan 2014 hat is the history of Ramadan? Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic calendar. The term Ramadan literally means scorching in Arabic. It was established as a Holy Month for Muslims after the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad in 610 CE on the occasion known as Laylat al-Qadr, frequently translated as “the Night of Power.” Observance of Ramadan is mandated in the Quran, Surah 2, Ayah 185. What are the dates of Ramadan? Because the cycle of the lunar calendar does not match the solar calendar, the dates of Ramadan shift by approximately 11 days each year. In 2014, Ramadan is expected to begin on Saturday, June 28, in the United States, although the date is only confirmed once the moon is sighted. Ramadan for the rest of the world is expected to begin onSunday, June 29th. The ending of Ramadan is marked by the holiday of Eid ul-Fitr, which takes place either 29 or 30 days after the beginning of the month. On Eid ul-Fitr, morning prayers are followed by feasting and celebra

ooooooooooaaaaaal . . . Germany wins the 2014 World Cup in an amazing game against Argentina with a beautiful goal by Mario Gotze (#19) in the 113th minute.

The finals of World Cup 2014, Germany vs Argentina; a game of strategy, skill and disappointment for the Argentina fans – there had to be a winner and a loser. Germany and Argentina both played superb football throughout the 2014 World Cup but today it appeared that Germany just simply wanted it

British Guiana Stamp sells for $9.5 Million -World Rarest Stamp British Guiana One Cent Black on Magenta, 1856

n 1856, the former colony of British Guiana (now Guyana) urgently required an extra supply of stamps and couldn’t wait for a fresh stock of new stamps to arrive from England where they were normally produced. Thepostmaster of British Guiana asked the publishers of the Official Gazette newspaper in Georgetown, the capital of Guiana, to print an emergency issue for local use. The rather crude looking

designs were printed in one cent and four cent denominations. One cent stamps were meant for mailing newspapers, while their four cent counterparts were intended for regular postal correspondence. The local designs were printed in black ink on low-quality magenta-colored paper. They featured an image of a sailing ship, with the lettering “Black Guiana” and an inscription of the colony’s Latin

The Republicans Trying to Sue the President for doing his Job helping Americans, it was all about playing games.

By Roger Caldwell

n Minnesota last week, the president made some jokes about Speaker Boehner getting ready to bring a lawsuit against him. The Republicans have spent the last five years trying to block and obstruct every initiative that President Obama has worked to implement. It has never made sense, but when you are angry, your thinking is not logical.

Speaker Boehner knows he is playing games, but he can tell the conservatives and Republicans, that he is out to stop the president. With this lawsuit, Speaker Boehner can portray the president as tyrannical, and not doing his job. Some Americans who are also angry will probably agree with the speaker, but the political experts know that President Bush used his executive powers much more than President Obama. “The Republicans in Congress don’t do anything except block me and call me names, and it can’t be that much fun,” says the president. President Obama is always a gentleman when he talks about Republican obstructions and disrespect. But the awful names that the president has been called such as tar baby and monkey is a result of him being Black.

Very few legislators or people in the media will admit that the In response to Republican obstruction, the president has de- president is being sued because he is Black, and they know clared this the year of action, instead of waiting for the Congress to do nothing. World Cup 2014 —Continued from page 1—

more. Germany maintained possession for 60% of the games and kept the pressure on Argentina forcing a total of 7 saves vs a total of 2 saves for the German goalkeeper. The goal in the 113th minute by Germany substitute striker, Mario Gotze (#19), was simply the final nail and the end to a great 2014 World Cup. Congrats to both teams for their achievements and we look forward to the next World Cup 2018 in Russia. As we provide a recap of the 2014 World Cup; I found it absolutely necessary to point out that no commentator covers football with the excitement of the game like the South American commentators . . .GOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!! On Thursday June 12th World Cup 2014 began in Brazil with opening game between Brazil and Croatia at the Sao Paulo Arena in Brazil. World Cup 2014 was slated to be one of the greatest World Cup’s ever presented, partly because it was being hosted in one of the greatest football nations in the world and because of the sheer flamboyance of Brazil in both their style of football and their culture. On Thursday June 12th World Cup 2014 began in Brazil with the opening game between Brazil and Croatia at the Sao Paulo Arena in Brazil. The opening Group matches saw some predictable results, some extremely competitive games, some unexpected results and some major upsets as Spain went down 1 – 5 to the Netherlands, Germany defeated Portugal 4 – 0. Brazil tied with Mexico 0 – 0, Croatia defeating Cameroon, Uruguay defeating England 2 – 1, USA almost completed what should have been an unbelievable defeat over Portugal and much much more exciting and competitive games, close calls and devastating defeats. The round of 16 matches, in my opinion, saw no major upsets but did deliver some disappointing performances during regulation. Team USA played beautiful football consistently throughout their World Cup performance and we are extremely proud of their competitive spirit and grit – they made us proud. Brazil’s performance against Chile was a sign that they just didn’t seem to be fully prepared to stake their claim as the greatest football nation in the World. Mexico’s loss to the Netherlands was a heart-breaker. The quarter finals saw what would be expected, with all the expected teams progressing to the semi-finals. However the Netherlands vs Costa Rica game was the best of the quarter final games. The semi-finals, the semi-finals, the semi-finals; what can be said? The greatest defeat and disappointment in World Cup history was presented for millions upon millions of football/ soccer fans around the world to see in full color. A Recap: Brazil appeared to start the game flat with an underlining sense of uncertainty. The injury to the young and upcoming superstar, Neymar, was a major loss to the goal scoring ability of Brazil. However, the second yellow card to team captain, Thiago Silva, was a judgmental error by Silva that ultimately placed Brazil at a severe disadvantage going into the Semi-final game against Germany. Brazil appeared flustered and confused as the goals started in the first few minutes of the game. The first goal was a defensive error that may have been addressed if there was a leader on the team and more communication in the defense to provide a more ‘manto-man’ coverage. The second goal was a combination of, in my opinion, goalkeeping error, Julio Cesar should have been able to hold-on to or control the first shot and not provided Germany’s Miroslav Klose with the opportunity to score on the rebound. However, as a goalkeeper myself, the goalkeeper should only really be responsible for the first shot and the defense should provide coverage to prevent direct access to the rebound after the goalkeeper makes the first save; therefore again a defensive error. At this point with 2 goals scored Brazil should have made a major strategic change in their positioning structure and shut-down the defense, pull 2 more players into a more defensive structure and shut down the scoring area, crowd the area and make it difficult, if not impossible for Germany to penetrate your area. In the absence of a leader on the team, a leader in the defense, Brazil collapsed and the rest is literally history. Germany must be commended for going in for the kill and taking full advantage of every goal scoring opportunity and of Brazil’s total and absolute collapse; they made history in so many way on that faithful of July 8th 2014. Mark my word; ‘No other team will ever get the opportunity to beat Brazil 7 -1 in another World Cup Semi-final – ever, Congrats to Germany.

aribbean American Heritage Month (CAHM) Festival 2014 was a tremendous success. With age and experience comes efficiency and proficiency; the 2014 CAHM planning committee has maintained the support of key members who have utilized their experience over the past few years to perfect the planning and implementation process. This year we have proven that with less members being able to commit to the planning of the CAHM Festival we were still able to complete the process and deliver a Caribbean American Heritage Festival to the community that was practically flawless. Every aspect of our plan fell into place. The addition of the Kiddies Carnival proved to be worth the extra effort; parents and children alike came out early and enjoyed the Kiddies Carnival parade. As always, we must also be thankful to the powers of the heavens who provided us with our first perfect weather CAHM Festival since 2011……it appears that we have even impressed the powers that be in the heavens …..we had an absolutely perfect day.

the results can be seen in the better site layout, larger bar area, relocation of the steelpan group and the stronger effort in the advertising.

The Jamaican Constabulary Force Choir he Jamaican Constabulary Force Choir (JCFC) – “WOW”, that’s all I can say, “WOW”, what talent, what amazing voices; we were extremely appreciative of the opportunity to listen to the beautiful voices of these talented members of the Jamaican Constabulary Force Choir (JCFC). New Voice Entertainment in association with New Beginning Children’s Ministry and Love for Souls Ministry made a bold and brave move by presenting the JCFC in their entirety, not a part of or some of the members but the entire choir, to the Orlando community. While I can only describe the voices and talent with the word “WOW”, I must say that I was extremely disappointed with our people, our Caribbean people here in the Orlando area. This was the first time, and hopefully not the last time, that we have the opportunity to listen to these amazing members of the JCFC in Orlando and the

turnout was absolutely appalling. There was no reason why the room should not be packed from wall to wall. But this I must say, for those who attended; we had an absolute amazing time, the JCFC received standing ovations at the end of almost every performance. The supporting cast of entertainers provided the attendees with powerful performances and powerful words of wisdom. We look forward to welcoming the Jamaican Constabulary Force Choir back to Orlando anytime; the sooner the better; they were absolutely amazing. Congrats to the Mark and Sophia Smiley for their vision in bringing the JCFC to Orlando.

Alma Fletcher, the beloved mother of Danielle eading ladies are women who are not superwomen but women who weather the storm and stand the test of time. The month of July is such a sensitive month for those who know and love Danielle Sampson. But no one knows this more than Alma Fletcher, the beloved mother of Danielle.

ing or for changing. The Fletcher family did not qualify for a Habitat home and the extensive care for Danielle does not allow either parent to have a second job. Alma lives on the hope of Danielle (all the joy Dani brought to the lives of others when she was mobile) and she is the hope for Danielle (all the faith and optimism that Danielle needs to live day by day).

In this article, we would like to take a look back over the past Sunday, July 29, 2012 – July 31, 2012 “Drive-by victim two years; sharing Alma’s story and a few stories written by fights for life” local reporters/writers. By Susan Jacobson, Orlando Sentinel Alma Fletcher was thrown into the shock and the dismay of life on Sunday, July 29, 2012, the Danielle Sampson, 15, is in evening of her birthday when the hospital with a bullet her only biological daughter wound to her head after bewas shot in the head. Sometimes in life when things are getting the best of us something more severe turns our way – it was this moment for Alma and her family. Before the shooting the family due to budget cuts, slow work hours was displaced from their home and lost much of their possessions. Alma could not bear the thought of losing her child and she prayed to God for a miracle. She often said she wish she could trade places with Danielle and give her daughter her life back. The memories of Danielle’s strength is all the community could talk about; Danielle played basketball, tutored, mentored, served at church, fed the homeless, danced, performed in productions, led her peers to better decisions and choices and gave hope to all through her big smile. Danielle was a great girl and Alma knows that her great girl will have a restored life. It’s been two years of trials with no one paying for the crime of Danielle’s shooting and Alma has endured much. “The main suffering is that of broken trust; it’s difficult to trust almost anyone or even go places because I have to live with so much uncertainty of life and broken promises from people who were there at the beginning but now have left us to deal alone. The nurses get upset with me because I ask them to be extra careful with Danielle as she cannot talk to tell them if they are hurting her, the community asks me questions that sometimes is too painful to answer and I at times don’t trust myself because I couldn’t protect my child and now I cannot help her or even raise funds to give her a decent vehicle to take her out; she stays in the hot cramped room all the time. If we take her out the access bus drives us all over the place before they bring us home and sometimes Danielle is so soiled until it causes rash on her - it’s just too much to bare but I can hear Danielle say, it’s going to be alright mommy and the devil is a liar – this sister gives me courage”, said Alma Fletcher in a recent conversation with a family friend. Currently Alma prays for a home for Danielle, a place where Danielle will not be confined to one room which is sectioned by a curtain giving a form of privacy in case someone is visit-

The decision to take him to Pine Hills changed their lives forever. Danielle, 15, an Apopka High School student, was unconscious and on a ventilator Tuesday in the intensive-care unit at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, said her sister, Baje Fletcher. Danielle was shot in the back of the head while riding in the family’s van. Her father, who was driving west on North Lane, turned north onto Powers Drive when he heard gunfire coming from two approaching vehicles, Fletcher said. The next thing he knew, his daughter was slumped over in the back seat. “There was no warning,” Fletcher said. Danielle’s parents, Alma and Justin Fletcher, and their friend, Nigel Claxton, 45, were not hurt. A teenager who makes good grades and has lofty goals, Danielle had just gotten her first job working at a summer camp and was studying for her drivers permit. She plays basketball at school, runs track, performs in plays at church, and loves to read and write poetry. Her goal is to become a neurosurgeon, her sister said. “She’s a fast learner,” Fletcher said. “She’s always willing to help without being asked.” Today at 6:30 p.m., a prayer vigil for Danielle is scheduled at Greater Orlando CARES, a mentoring group on the campus of the Well of Hope, 5230 Indian Hill Road in Pine Hills. Her family asks that people who attend wear her favorite color, blue, and basketball gear and bring a blue balloon to release. “Danielle, we are praying and wishing you a speedy return to us,” the invitation reads. tion among family and friends. What are the daily fasting requirements? During the month of Ramadan, most Muslims fast from dawn to sunset with no food or water. Before sunrise many Muslims have the Suhur or predawn meal. At sunset families and friends gather for Iftar which is the meal eaten by Muslims to break the fast. Many Muslims begin the meal by eating dates as the Prophet used to do. This ritual fast known as, Sawm, is one of the five pillars of Islam, and requires that individuals abstain from eating, drinking, smoking and sexual intercourse. What are the expectations towards charity? Charity is an important part of Ramadan. The fast emphasizes self-sacrifice and using the experience of hunger to grow in empathy with the hungry. During Ramadan, Muslim communities work together to raise money for the poor, donate clothes and food, and hold iftar dinners for the less fortunate.

motto “Damus Petimus que Vicissim” (“We Give and We Seek in Return”). The stamp had a rectangular shape with its corners snipped off, which made it look more like an octagon. Each sample was initialed by a post office employee as a security measure against possible forgeries. However, production of the stamps was soon discontinued and in 1873, a 12-year-old Guyanese boy discovered an octagon-shaped one cent “Black on Magenta”, postmarked April 4, 1856 and bearing the initials “E.D.W” in his family’s attic. He later sold the stamp to N. R. McKinnon, a local collector, for a very small sum. Over the years, the uniqueness of this stamp created an uproar in the philatelic circles, as no other copy was ever discovered. In 1980, it was auctioned to John Dupont at a huge price of $935,000. On June 17th, 2014 the ‘Black on Magenta’ when up for auction once again at a Sotheby’s in New York. Before the auction, it was displayed in London, Hong Kong and New York.

Can non-Muslims participate? Non-Muslims are free to participate in Ramadam. Many non-Muslims fast and even pray with their Muslim friends or family members. NonMuslims are often invited to attend prayer and iftar dinners. Those wishing to be polite to someone who is fasting for Ramadan may greet them with Ramadan Mubarak or Ramadan Kareem, which mean Have a Blessed or Generous Ramadan. Should Muslims with diabetes fast? Fasting during Ramadan is discouraged for patients with diabetes by the American Diabetes Association. However, the study says this was not conclusive. Many diabetic patients fasted with no complications. Patients with diabetes should work with their doctors to figure out a strategy if they choose to fast. What is the ‘goal’ of Ramadan? In general, the practices of Ramadan are meant to purify oneself from thoughts and deeds which are counter to Islam. By removing material desires, one is able to focus fully on devotion and service to God. Many Muslims go beyond the physical ritual of fasting and attempt to purge themselves of impure thoughts and motivations such as anger, cursing, and greed. Do all Muslims take part in Ramadan fasting? Most Muslims believe Ramadan fasting is mandatory, but there are some groups that do not. Pregnant or breastfeeding mothers, people who are seriously sick, travelers, or those at health risk should not fast. Children that have not gone through puberty are also not required to fast during the month Ramadan.

On Sunday July 20th, 2014, VP Records will celebrate their story and the history of reggae music with a special popup exhibit that will debut at the fourth annual Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival, held at Queens’ Roy Wilkins Park.

In an excerpt from the video, McKay explains that “Vincent and Pat’s move to New York and the founding of VP Record’s Distribution formed an independent and vital channel from Jamaica to the world. The classic recordings of the period made an indelible mark and established reggae as a dominant form of the developing ‘world music’ genre.” VP Records co-founder Patricia Chin along with her sons Christopher and Randy Chin, who run and operate the label today, will be on site at Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival and available for interviews. Top 5 Video Picks 1. Artist: Deep Jahi Title: “Harsh Reality”

Video Link: www.junglevibes.tv (Top 5 Video Picks) JVTV Review: Deep Jahi is one of the few chosen voices of dancehall music. Deep Jahi is a prime example of the struggle and we endorse this youth 100%

2. Artist: Hollow Point ft. Devano Title: “No Fear Dem”

Video Link: www.junglevibes.tv (Top 5 Video Picks) JVTV Review: When Hollow Point first entered the dancehall scene he was automatically grouped with the likes of Supercat and Sean Paul for the deliverance and style that he currently possesses. In this single with reggae singer, Devano – Hollow Point shows that he is not a force to mess with. Dancehall embraces the lil bredren and we look forward to more of his outputs in the future. No fear Dem is the anthem to the streets.

3. Artist: Flipo Title: “Doh Tell Me Dat”

Video Link: www.junglevibes.tv (Top 5 Video Picks) JVTV Review: This song has been circulating for some time, but the buzz has been created and the masses are aware of this young artist by the name of Flipo. This song has been a staple for this year’s carnival scene. This particular song was produced by District 6 and mashing up fetes everywhere. We look forward to more of his songs in the future. Lets hope that JC Management Co. takes this lad to the next level. Flipo for President!

4. Artist: Enrique Iglesias ft. Sean Paul Title: “Bailando”

Video Link: www.junglevibes.tv (Top 5 Video Picks) JVTV Review: Now when there are two powerhouses on one track you know its bound to be a hit. Dutty Paul teamed up Enrique Iglesias for this hit song “Bailando”. The effect of the song is different in a night club as opposed to leisure listening in the car. We have a strong feeling we might get an E.P. from this duo really soon. We at JVTV rate this tune and you should too.

5. Artist: Delly Ranx Title: “Sweet Reggae”

Video Link: www.junglevibes.tv (Top 5 Video Picks) JVTV Review: Delly Ranx is a long time veteran of dancehall music. We first linked up with Delly at Ghetto Networkz studios in Orlando Florida. We remain tight as bredrens. This tune Sweet Reggae is an ode to classic reggae music with the same tempo as a 1990’s riddim. Delly Ranx is an underdog with over achieving ambitions. Keep an eye out for new singles dropping for the summer. We definitely rate this artist.

Colin Barrington Smith n a quiet evening at an event in South Florida I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Mr. Colin Smith; a simple man with creative talent to showcase our Caribbean landscape and the natural beauty of the world on canvas. He loves the Caribbean landscape, culture and music and this is clearly evident in his paintings. Colin found inspiration from his youth in the lush Jamaica flora where he was born and the surrounding Caribbean sea. Colin studied at the Jamaica School of Art, which is now known as the Edna Manley School for the Visual Arts. His artistic creations transcends the canvas of his paintings. Colin has won a number of awards

Colin’s work can be found in private and public collections internationally however one of his more rewarding pieces is a mural commissioned by the Rotary Club of Kingston in downtown Jamaica which stands at the entrance of the school of Hope for the Mentally Handicapped in Mona, Kingston. Colin now lives in South Florida and enjoys the local scenery, which has been the inspiration of recent work. s a practicing vegetarian for 11 years, I am always looking for new ways to spice up my meals. Because I stopped eating jerk chicken, I wanted to find a way to include my Jamaican jerk sauce to still keep me connected to my roots. I decided to experiment with tofu by using Walkerswood hot and spicy Jerk Seasoning. I added garlic, sweet vidalia onions, red, green and gold bell peppers along with Bragg Liquid Aminos to the Walkerswood Jerk Seasoning, and to my surprise the recipe made my taste buds explode with excitement.

Method: Step 1. Open the pack of tofu and dran the water. Wash tofu and put into a bowl. Add Bragg Liquid Aminos and jerk seasoning to the tofu, and mix together. Step 2. Saute olive oil garlic and onion in sauce pan for a few minutes; then add the tofu and saute for a few minutes. Add 1 cup of water and cover the sauce pan. Cook tofu for 15 minutes. Add red, green and yellow pepppers to tofu and cook for 5 more minutes.

Most people don’t like tofu because it is plain and has no taste, Step 3. Warm tortilla. Mash avocado and spread on the tortibut tofu is known for its ability to absorb the flavor of herbs lla, add lettuce, then tofu and roll the tortilla. and spices that is added when you prepare your meal. Tofu is very high in protein with all the essential amino acids, so it is a healthy meat substitute for vegetarians and vegans. Tofu is available in different consistencies, either super extra firm, firm or soft. I always buy organic Non-GMO super extra firm tofu for my recipe. The softer tofu is normally used to make smoothies or tofu eggs. If you are looking for something new and exciting to jump start your healthy lifestyle try my Jerk Tofu Rasta Wrap. It is healthy, quick and easy to prepare. Once you try my Jerk Tofu Rasta Wrap recipe, please send me an email to my website www.sandimorais.net I would love to hear your comments.
