1 Year over...already A new chapter begins for Caribbean American Passport News Magazine

W

hen we started this process last year - I remember walking into the printer’s office armed with copies of seven different newspapers - I wanted lighter paper, trimmed edges, a rectangular shape and I wanted it stapled, the colors had to look a certain way and the font had to be larger than usual. I wasn’t sure if I could have all of those features. but that’s what I wanted. The printer assured me that in his 30 years of experience he had never done one that way - but that he could. Last month he was proud to point out that CAP News Magazine was the newspaper of choice for their company’s media kit showcasing their best work.

A great big thank you goes out to my graphic designer, Jan Smiley, who’s the genius behind the look of the paper. She loves it and takes the time to add those personal touches that you like and compliment me about. I explain the vision behind the look I want to have and she takes my ideas and translates them into the gorgeous covers you’ve seen over the last year.

Thank you to the many people who piled newspapers into their cars and delivered them to restaurants, supermarkets and beauty shops. We’re now being distributed throughout Central Florida by A&A Halal. We are still supplemented by delivery from our friends who ensure the smaller places are constantly replenished. The American citizens are extremely frustrated with all of the representatives in Congress and they are pointing their finger at every one of them as the problem. Many people in the country think that integrity and credibility no longer exist in politics. The people want to see a change and difference, and something they can believe in.

It is time for the Democrats and the President to begin to mobilize the college, African American, Hispanic, Caribbean, Youth, and independent voters. In 2008, President Obama revolutionized campaigning with the use of social networking, and online organizing. With celebrities’ endorsements and specifically the use of Oprah Winfrey, the President was able to draw record crowds.

Instead of spending so much time discussing what the president has not done, it is time to start talking about what he has accomplished.

With the President’s numbers taking a nose dive and sliding, it is important that he starts to change the direction that his numbers are going. Based on history most incumbents win re-elections, because their job performance ratings are in the 50% or higher range. President George Bush was able to win with a 48% approval rating, but that is an exception, as opposed to the rule.

Polls show that voters hold both parties to blame for the fiasco with the political fight over raising the limit on U.S. borrowing, and the unprecedented downgrade of the country’s credit rating. They also are angry over the stunted economic recovery, and an unemployment rate stuck above 9%.

In President Obama’s weekly address he said, “You’ve got a right to be frustrated. I am, because you deserve better. I don’t think it’s too much for you to expect that the people you send to this town to start delivering. Some Republicans in Congress would rather see their opponents lose than see America win.”

After two and a half years in Washington, it appears that the President has lost his magic, and the power in his belief of change. The first year in office, the president was a whirlwind of activity, and getting unprecedented bills passed in universal healthcare, appointing two Supreme Court Justices, reforming the financial industry, preventing the economy from collapsing, and bringing the war in Iraq to an end.

It is essential that progressives, independents, Democrats, and minorities began to have a legitimate discourse on President Obama’s record. Americans generally want immediate gratification, because we live in a microwave society. But American political change is slow and there are major bureaucracies to transform, and reorganize.

Instead of spending so much time discussing what the president has not done, it is time to start talking about what he has accomplished. In order for the President to complete what he has started, he needs more vocal and print support. It is time to get behind the President and stand on his record.

Caribbean-American youngest American to ever medal in the 1500m

atthew Centrowitz - who has Guyanese heritage and ties to Central Florida through his uncle Mark Bannister, celebrated winning the Bronze medal in the1500M event at the recently concluded Track & Field World championships, Daegu, South Korea.

• The most innovative reform to the unemployment insurance program in 40 years: As part of an extension of unemployment insurance to prevent 5 million Americans looking for work from losing their benefits, the President’s plan includes innovative work-based reforms to prevent layoffs and give states greater flexibility to use UI funds to best support jobseekers, including: • Work-Sharing: UI for workers whose employers choose worksharing over layoffs. o A new “Bridge to Work” program: The plan builds on and improves innovative state programs where those displaced take temporary, voluntary work or pursue on-the-job training.

• Innovative entrepreneurship and wage insurance programs: States will also be empowered to implement wage insurance to help reemploy older workers and programs that make it easier for unemployed workers to start their own businesses.

• A $4,000 tax credit to employers for hiring long-term unemployed workers.

• Prohibiting employers from discriminating against unemployed workers when hiring.

• Expanding job opportunities for low-income youth and adults through a fund for successful approaches for subsidized employment, innovative training programs and summer/year-round jobs for youth.

4. Tax Relief for Every American Worker and Family • Cutting payroll taxes in half for 160 million workers next year: The President’s plan will expand the payroll tax cut passed last year to cut workers payroll taxes in half in 2012 - providing a $1,500 tax cut to the typical American family, without negatively impacting the Social Security Trust Fund.

• Allowing more Americans to refinance their mortgages at today’s near 4 percent interest rates, which can put more than $2,000 a year in a family’s pocket.

5. Fully Paid for as Part of the President’s Long-Term Deficit Reduction Plan. To ensure that the American Jobs Act is fully paid for, the President will call on the Joint Committee to come up with additional deficit reduction necessary to pay for the Act and still meet its deficit target. The President will, in the coming days, release a detailed plan that will show how we can do that while achieving the additional deficit reduction necessary to meet the President’s broader goal of stabilizing our debt as a share of the economy.

Trinidad Lockdown 2011 - A comedy of errors from the greatest country on earth

So, I headed down the road to the police station. An officer with an IQ of about 0.5 spent a long time trying to decide how to enter my information into a big ledger book. Just as I was wondering whether our police stations would ever get computerised I spotted an officer nearby on a computer. What was he doing? He was chatting on Facebook. The officer dealing with me continued to be baffled by all the pretty blue lines in the ledger book, and called over a colleague to help determine how to best write between these lines. Another man then walked in and interrupted this difficult process, apparently bringing some breakfast for someone who works in the station. ‘Ah bring dis for Ramlal,’ he said. And when you know that you come from God’s chosen country (don’t you know the saying ‘God is a Trini’?), you tend to not take things too seriously. Some people take things with a pinch of salt. Trinis take things with a splash of rum, a few cubes of ice, and some Angostura Bitters. When bad things happen, we don’t fret, we write a calypso about it instead. Review & Closure of Certain Non-criminal Removal/Deportation Cases What are low priority cases?

ecently, the Obama Administration and Department of Homeland Security-Department of Justice announced that a joint committee would be established to review over 300,000 removal/deportation cases pending in the immigration court, the Board of Immigration Appeals and the Federal Courts of Appeals. During this caseby-case review, officials will identify those cases that have “low priority” and these cases will be administratively closed and the respondent (or alien) will be eligible to apply for work authorization. Note, respondent’s (or alien) with cases pending in immigration court cannot apply for this benefit and there is no form required to be filed for your case to be considered for such treatment.

In plain English, a committee will review all non-criminal alien cases pending in removal/deportation proceedings and based on the positive or negative facts in each case, will decide to temporary place a freeze on the case (not terminate or dismiss the case) and allow the alien to apply for work authorization.

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has made clear that its enforcement priorities are national security, public safety, border security, and repeat immigration law violators. DHS will have “zero tolerance” for those apprehended at the border. It specifically states that removal cases involving recent border crossers will not be included in the review of cases carried out by the joint committee.

To date, there has been no guidance issued as to how long this review will take and how the Immigration Judges, Government Attorneys and Respondent (Alien) Attorney can assist in identifying these “low priority” cases.

Low priority cases include veterans; long-time permanent residents; minors and the elderly; individuals who have been present since childhood; individual with serious disabilities or health issues; women who are nursing or pregnant; and victims of domestic violence or other serious crimes. DHS has stated that they will be weighing the totality of the circumstances in each case.

Is it possible for cases with criminal convictions to be considered low priority?

There is no bright-line rule that would automatically disqualify any case. However, a list of negative factors that will be looked at with particular care includes “serious felons, repeat offenders, and individuals with a lengthy criminal record of any kind,” as well as “known gang members.”

What is the difference between administrative closure and termination?

Administrative closure is a procedural convenience used to temporarily remove a case from the immigration court’s calendar. A person whose case has been administratively closed remains in removal proceedings, and either party can request that the case be placed back on the court’s calendar at any time. A case that is administratively closed remains pending, although inactive. Termination means that the case has ended and the respondent is no longer in removal proceedings. Upon termination, the individual will revert to the same status he or she was in prior to commencement of proceedings It is advisable to consult with an immigration attorney if your case is pending in immigration court to determine whether your case fits within the criteria for administrative closure.

Remember, there is no fee or form to be submitted for your case to get consideration for low priority treatment.

ith approximately 900 in attendance. The number 1 touring play out of Jamaica “Ghett Out” featuring Keith Ramsay as SHEBADA and an all star cast, sells out to record numbers. No other play in Central Florida has brought out Jamaicans and all nationalities in such record numbers.

On Sunday, August 28th at about 4:00pm, Wekiva High School ‘s parking lot started filling with cars, people and an air of excitement. Merely mentioning to the first 5 ladies that the doors open at 6:00pm, meant nothing in comparison to their excitement of being the first to arrive, therefore allowing them to rightfully claim their seats and position them directly in front of SHEBADA. People came from as far north as New York , and as far south as Fort Lauderdale to watch Jamaica ‘s Madea keep you in stitches.

Now if that is not thoughtful of me then I don’t know what is. I’m just surprised at how selfish you are Gary. I never thought you were like that. You wouldn’t even consider getting your spouse some HELP. Suppose you were not always there, wouldn’t you want her to have some HELP? GARY: Man STOP talking FOOLISHNESS IN MY EARS. According to organizers, Val Demings was the first and only person they thought of to speak at this event. Demings received a B.S. in Criminology from Florida State University and a Masters degree in Public Administration from Webster University.

She spent her early career as a Social Worker focused on foster care, and then joined the police force in Orlando. Demings was also President of her class at the police academy, and earned a reputation as a tenacious, no-nonsense cop. After serving in the Criminal Investigations Division, Internal Affairs and other departments, she was tapped to serve as the Commander of the Special Operations. There, she was responsible for some of Orlando’s highest profile tasks, including special events, dignitary protection, and K-9 units.

In 2007, Demings was selected to serve as Chief for the Orlando Police Department - the first woman to ever hold that position.

Upon taking office, she launched an all-out war against crime.

Her tenure was marked by a dramatic forty percent reduction in violent crime, including robberies, shootings and murders. Under her bold and aggressive leadership, thousands of guns were removed from Orlando’s streets, and communities became safer.

After twenty-seven years at the Orlando Police Department, including three and a half years as the department’s top cop, Demings decided to retire from the force and continue her commitment to public service in another way, with a run for Congress in Florida’s 8th Congressional District. Val Demings is a wife, mother and has a successful career and the Women of Wisdom are honored to have her speak at its event at Circa Restaurant in Winter Park.

Conversation with Rick SinghCandidate for Orange County Property Appraiser

R

ick Singh is running for the Orange County Property Appraiser’s Office, and although the election is a little more than a year away, CAP wanted to get to know the candidate a little better, and understand his motivations behind running for this office.

CAP News Magazine: Rick, we know you were born in Guyana, but tell us about your life in America.

I arrived in New York at the age of ten, and started assimilating into my adopted country. I became a typical American immigrant kid, playing baseball while attending Hindu religious education classes and singing bhajans (Hindu Devotional songs). At the same time, I dreamed of becoming a pilot and with my strong aptitude for science, I was accepted into the prestigious Aviation High School. While there, I enjoyed the more technical aspects of aviation, and upon graduating, joined the U.S. Army. During my military career, I discovered my entrepreneurial spirit. I then, moved to Florida and started an automotive repair business, which I ran with my brother.

My experience in both the public and private sides of the business makes me uniquely qualified for the position I am running for. As closely involved as I was in the real estate and appraiser business, I’ve noticed some serious disparities. As I looked closer, I found myself bothered by the unnecessary waste and expensive practices I observed.

For example: Within the same neighborhoods, with the same type of house and same builder, great inequities in valuation can occur, resulting in different taxable values. This ends up with an unfair distribution of property taxes. I believe with a fair and equitable assessment of value, this will lead to a more accurate tax bill. In effect, if we are all assessed fairly, then we will all pay less.

Another issue is the need to get information out into the hands of the people who need it. For example, there is an Elderly and Disabled exemption that is much underutilized, because so few people are aware of it. I would like these groups to be aware of the benefits available to them, and for the Property Appraiser’s CAP News Magazine: How did you end up in the appraisals field? office to be better at getting this information out to the public.

My restless entrepreneurial spirit led me to dabble in the real estate field. I started taking classes in real estate, when one of my customers, none other than Rich Crotty, offered me a position in the Property Appraiser’s office. I got immersed in this new field, took night classes and became a State Certified Appraiser. The more I learned about this field, the more I loved it. After six years with the Property Appraiser’s Office, I realized that as a fee-based appraiser, I could evaluate each property on its own individual merits, and I started a Property Appraisal business.

I’m eager to use my knowledge and experience to completely overhaul the office.
