Spunky, energetic and charismatic are the first words that come to mind when describing female recording artiste Marcy Chin. Chin is multi-faceted and multi-talented - honing her craft in singing, deejaying, and rapping. She doesn't see or accept limits when it comes to her craft, and can pack a neat punch on any beat with her diverse skillset.

Born Lonique Chin, Marcy began demonstrating her exceptional talent at a very early

Since that time, it has been a whirlwind journey that would see her taking on the Marcy Chin persona, travelling overseas gaining the respect and love of fans across all genres, and building her repertoire as an international lyrical powerhouse.

In 2013, Chin offered the public a taste of her persona and talent

with the release of her first mix tape titled, Sex, Guns and Smoke, produced by Kunley Da Kulprit of Ward 21. A year later, Marcy embarked on a South American tour with Ward 21 that saw her as a main act, winning the hearts of non-English speaking fans of all ages who could recite her lyrics word for word. Mary returned to Jamaica with bigger ambitions and established a virtual circle for her beloved fans of Chin City. Marcy describes her music as a fusion of her greatest loves Hip Hop, Neo-

Soul, House/Trance, Pop and of course the original hardcore Dancehall. Her 2019 dance/ club banger Soy Bonita with electronic duo French Horn Rebellion was featured in Season 4 (Episode 2) of The Bold Type, an American comedy-drama series produced by Universal Television for Freeform. Soy Bonita was also featured in the American police procedural anthology television series, The Sinner (Season 3, Episode 4), which stars Jessica Biel, Bill Pullman and Jamaicanborn actress Parisa Fitz-Henley.

Fast forward to 2020, the petite bombshell is now one of the charges signed to businessman and music executive Josef Bogdanovich’s Down Sound Records (DSR). In 2021, Marcy went viral on social media when she joined thousands of other celebrities and influencers and used her voice to express concern about the increased incidents of rape and sexual abuse of women and children. She released her freestyle name Warning on Instagram, garnering thousands of views, spreading awareness &

instigating tremendous responses of accountability for the increasing occurrences. She later recorded the extended version to the freestyle with the title track of the same name. “I just like to remind women of our power from time to time. If that brings comfort to my listeners then I would have done my part. I'm interested in contributing in any way to properly help women who are victims,” Marcy said when asked about her desire to pen and release Warning. Cancel Rape Culture, a song that was birthed due to the frequent incidents of rape and abduction in Jamaica, was released in October 2021.

Marcy has enjoyed success on several iTunes reggae charts globally. “When Again”, released in 2014 peaked at number three on the iTunes Reggae chart in Israel, while "Lipstick" produced by Down Sound Records (DSR) hit number three on the iTunes Reggae chart in Italy (March 2021). Her other tracks, "Mi Money", "No Means No", and "Rise" also dented the iTunes Reggae charts (May 2021 in Israel). Wul Night, another of her releases, hit number one in the iTunes reggae charts in Finland and Slovenia in June 2021.

The remix of the song also charted multiple times in June. Mek it Bunx Up, a collaboration with Deewun also did well for her, racking up more than 30 million views on YouTube since its release in 2016. For Marcy, time is the master. She is reveling in her organic growth in one of the toughest creative industries.

*Ding Dong

The year is 1985.

In the streets of Nannyville, a volatile community in Kingston, Jamaica, kids are playing football, while some are dancing to the electrifying vibrations of authentic dancehall music. This is usually the pastime in most of these communities-their outlet, their happiness.

Five-year-old Kemar

Christopher Dwaine Ottey lives with his extended family. A few years earlier, his father, Ferdinand, was killed. Kemar feels a great responsibility to his family, even at a young age. He would eventually find a way to contribute to his family’s finances. In Nannyville, there are often dances and at the end of the night when the last patron leaves, young Kemar would retrieve the left-over empty alcohol bottles and sell them. This would become the foundation on which he built his entrepreneurial skills and

initiation into the fascinating world of dance and dancehall music. Today, Kemar is known widely as Ding Dong- a nickname given

most consistent and entertaining artistes. There is something to be said about invariably creating music and dances to keep the purveyors of dancehall happy and entertained. But to excel at anything in life, it takes mental fortitude, courage, conviction, and for Ding Dong, a strong Christian faith, which he’s had since he was a child. Along with the Higher and Supreme Being, Ding Dong draws his inspiration from the dances and parties he attends, where he started as a little boy collecting bottles.

industry. In the the early 2000s, Ding Dong committed to honoring his calling, which is dance. He was a member of the Flatbush Dance Crew, where he spent an exorbitant amount of time perfecting his craft. He became undeniably famous on the dancing scene after putting in hours at an event called Early Mondays and showing off some of the timeless dances created by him including, Swing Song, Part Di Crowd, Chakka Chakka, Flowers a Bloom, ‘Paranoid, and Dip again. In 2003, Ding Dong created his dancing crew, Ravers Clavers. Ironically, Ding Dong was making dances that were so complex that only he could do them. He wanted to be watched and admired. Over the years, he found a foolproof method that has allowed his songs and dances to dominate the dancehall space.

Dancing advice was also given to Ding Dong by his dancing idol, Gerald Levy aka Bogle. I had to minimize the technicalities in the dances and give people the amusement of practicing the moves, Ding Dong said. His first single “Badman Fawud,” was released in late 2005, just a few months after Bogle was shot and killed. Four years later he led the call for Jamaicans to embrace dancing again in the ultimate tribute to his idol

when he became involved in making the single “Wacky Dip” performed by Voicemail. Since then, consistency has been the name of the game for the Nannyville native, reeling off hits after hits and it is evident in his craft that he has given much credit to that advice.

Though music and dance have been Ding Dong’s most notable passions, fashion has always been one of his loves.

which started a mutually beneficial working relationship between the two. Romeich had desired to give up on music and sell his musical equipment, but Ding Dong stepped in and encouraged him not to. The studio became a place where a lot of magic happened. That was where Shenseea recorded her early hits and where Ding Dong still records his songs.

Though Romeich and others may have seen Ding Dong’s love for fashion trends and labeled him as a fashionista, it was always Ding Dong’s dream to have that translated into a business. Little Kemar from Nannyville who sold empty bottles to make extra money has always had big aspirations for himself as a businessman and when the right time came, he made those dreams a reality. The brand which appeals to both men and women offers its signature sunglasses, jackets, hats, polos, and t-shirts. Ding Dong said that he always wanted to do fashion, but he didn’t understand how to go about it. He knocked on a couple of doors and it didn’t happen. With the help of his wife, he was able to start an amazing brand which can be found at dndgthebrand.com.

His style and trends in dancehall caught the attention of worldrenowned Artiste Manager and Fashion Designer, Romeich Major of Romeich Entertainment. Ding Dong said that Romeich reached out to him and told him to come to see him at his headquarters on Waltham Park Road. He gave him a tour and showed him around the studio when he went there,

Ding Dong still harbors aspirations of creating a musical legacy by releasing his album which will be true to the playful, carefree spirit of his youth. He has come far from reselling empty glass bottles and is now one of dancehall’s most influential figures. He says he is nervous when he sees the scale of his ambitions. However, he embraces the responsibility which comes with his creativity, and his name is a reminder to answer each call.

SAINT MARTIN MORE THAN JUST AN EXHIBITION

Saint Martin is an experience all on its own. From the beautiful greenery to the freedom of the nude beaches, Saint Martin was an experience I will never forget. If you are not as adventurous and would decline visiting a nude beach, not to worry, there are plenty of amazing beaches that can appease your appetite. Here is a little history on Saint Martin and places you must visit.

Saint Martin is the northern region of an island nation divided between France and the Netherlands. It is a French territory covering about two-thirds of the island located in the Leeward Island region. It is well known for its nude beaches and high-end, trendy shops.

MARIGOT- CAPITAL CITY OF SAINT MARTIN: Once a small fishing village, Marigot has blossomed into a quintessentially Caribbean town known for its sidewalk bistros and colorful gingerbread houses. The capital of the French side of St. Martin mixes a few traditional tourist attractions with many opportunities for

seaside adventure. “Marigot” literally means “swamp,” and the area around the capital was filled with them when the town was established. Throughout the 18th century, the town grew thanks to booming sugar cane production and land filling projects, and today it is home to all the local government departments, vibrant markets, romantic promenades and some of St. Martin's most interesting architecture.

The town is a mecca for dutyfree shopping, and the winding streets of the central district are lined with French fashion and luxury boutiques. Many of the world's most prestigious brands

HIDDEN GEMS
24 WWW.CARIBBEANELITE.COM

can be found there, and the unbeatable prices make Marigot a great place to stock up on gifts and souvenirs.

For a more traditional shopping experience, spend a day exploring the sprawling Marigot market, a melting pot of smells, colors and sights that exudes a lively hustle and bustle. Locals arrive each morning as the sun comes up to sell the freshest fruits and vegetables, fish, spices and meats, and traditional restaurants hug the perimeter. Don't leave without sampling the sweetly flavored rums and indulging in some “colombo,” a fish stew spiced with a curry blend.

THE OTHER SIDE OF SAINT

MARTIN: Sint Maartin is the southern region of the island nation, Saint Martin, divided between France and the

Netherlands. Sint Maarten is the Netherlands territory covering about one-third of the island. It is known for its nightlife, beaches, casinos, and its native rum-based drinks. The main transportation onto the island is through the Princess Juliana International Airport.

BEACHES: The beach at Simpson Bay is one of the most pristine and tranquil around Philipsburg. The long curve of white sand welcomes sunbathers, swimmers, snorkelers and other water enthusiasts, and families often gather there to splash in the waves on the weekends. Other popular beaches around

Philipsburg include Pelican Beach, Cupecoy Beach and Kim Sha Beach, a perfect area for diving.

The fun goes all night long in Philipsburg. The neon lights of six casinos shine throughout the capital, and the Vegas-style gambling is some of the best in the Caribbean. Take a break between hands to dance to international hits at the nightclubs, or go from beach bar to beach bar making new friends and partying under the blanket of stars above. So why wait! Book your trip to the beautiful St Martin. I promise it will be unforgettable!

If you are not as adventurous and would decline visiting a nude beach, not to worry, there are plenty of amazing beaches that can appease your appetite.
