Walk in Beauty While I am admittedly a little biased, I do believe that the women of the Caribbean are some of the most beautiful in the world. In this issue we highlight one #poshgirl Miss British Virgin Islands 2013, Rosanna Chinchester. She was photographed by non-other than my favorite photographer Kevon Richardson in Tortola, British Virgin Islands. I have been looking at a book that was written by the first Navajo woman surgeon who is still practicing today. She talks about how Navajo women “Walk in Beauty” in a worldview in which everything in life is connected and influences everything else. Walking in beauty means to live in harmony and balance with everyone and everything – including yourself. Miss Chinchester is a young woman who takes this walk. And we congratulate her on that journey. The “walk” in beauty begins with each one of us respecting our bodies. This Body themed issue has a bit of fun with that. The results will be dazzling! Take that “Walk in Beauty” with the diverse contributions in this issue – from 25 Body Scrubs to Caribbean Foods. Come along with me to see that it is not difficult to love and respect your body. It is not based on money or what you drape your body in. However I must say the Bodycon fashion trend seems to not be going out of season anytime soon.

◀ BEBE V-NECK
BANDAGE DRESS, $129, BEBE.COM
Whether you pair it with a pair of sky-high stilettos or bold, chunky jewelry, this bandage dress from Bebe is sure to steal the spotlight wherever you go. Its undeniably sexy silhouette hugs the body in all the right places while its royal blue color commands attention. A true must-have for every woman’s closet, this bandage dress is sexy, fun, and flirtatious.
Ah, the infamous battle between what is a bodycon dress versus what is a bandage dress. While both hug the curves and serve as the perfect figure-flattering wardrobe staple, they are different despite what some may think. And with the lines of fashion constantly being blurred, it can be a tricky task deciphering the two. Here we’ve taken a closer look at both styles of dress, and of course given some options as to what we think are closet must-haves. Think about it literally: a bandage dress involves strips of material wrapping up the body (think Band-Aids). Made out of an ultra stretchy fabric that wears pretty snug, bandage dresses are the perfect balance between a dress and a body shaper.

Every girl needs her perfect LBD, and this one by Cache definitely fits the bill. Featuring a bandage style sans straps, this sultry number has a flattering fit and is ideal for any nighttime event: from a hot date night to a fun girls night out. Unlike bandage dresses, bodycon dresses have a bit more elasticity in them to ensure that they hug the body without feeling too tight. The dress clings from the bust to the lower hem and is usually available in a variety of lengths—from upper thigh to mid thigh to knee-length.

THE PENULTIMATE CARIBBEAN FASHION WEEK RUNWAY AND SHOPPING EXPERIENCE BY Nadia Ali
Hold onto your fashionista credit card because this year for the first time ever Caribbean Fashion Week will launch an online shopping website to accompany the show! Just imagine, all of the dresses, the designers and the look you most want hot off the runway – with the chance of designer lines hanging in your wardrobe being a click away. After 14 years of hosting the phenomenal show that puts Jamaica on the fashion map, Kingsley Cooper the show’s organiser has announced the creation of the online shopping website. He states it will, “give designers an opportunity to sell their collections not just to the attendees at the venue, but to a global audience.” To make this happen he has engaged the services of JHPR a London based PR firm and Kubi Springer who is an expert brand specialist to the stars. Together they will ensure the CFW name makes an impact virtually and globally. This year, there are expected to be about 50 immensely talented designers who will showcase their lines. Alongside those from Jamaica, designers to take to the catwalk are expected from Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Canada, Dominican Republic, Ethiopia, France, Guyana, Haiti, Italy, Martinique, Nigeria, St. Lucia, Suriname, Switzerland, Trinidad and Tobago, the USA and Zambia.
The venues will take patrons across Kingston kicking off the event at the Spanish Court Hotel with the opening reception and press conference to the National Indoor Sports Centre where the designers will showcase their lines. Other venues will include PULS8 in New Kingston where patrons get a sneak peek of Caribbean Fashion Week 2014 and Villa Ronai in Stony Hill where the closing party will be held on Monday 15th June. The opening night is set for the 11th June 2014 carded as ‘Night One’ which usually opens with emerging designers - the next big names in the fashion industry set to showcase their unique collections on the runway. Night Two features an eclectic list of designers from Jamaica, Africa, and the Caribbean and cumulates on the final night which is the star glitzy night featuring international performances. The Designer shows will take place at the NISC at 7pm nightly from Friday 13th-15th June each with its own after party which is set to begin at one o clock in the morning! So, mark your calendar for June 11-16th 2014, when for the first time ever, shoppers will get to buy designer clothing directly online at the Caribbean Fashion Week’s website. Fashionista’s will also get to view the events streamed live with a presence on Facebook, twitter and instagram thanks to over 25 sponsors. And, this year, the influential magazine ‘Vogue Italia’ will be covering the best runway looks from some of the most innovative designers gathered for the amazing five-day event known as Caribbean Fashion Week.

If you plan on hitting the beach this summer or spend any time outdoors, then you must think about protecting your skin. Melanoma (skin cancer) is rising fast. Melanoma is the 5th most common cancer for men in the US and 6th for women. It’s the most common cancer killer in woman age 24-29 and the second most in women 34-39. One myth out there among brown people is that darker the skin is protected from the risk of skin cancer and does not need much SPF protection. But this myth is the farthest from the truth. Melanoma and skin cancer affects all ethnicities. I let you in on a little known fact. Bob Marley died of melanoma. So let’s protect your skin now by using a sunscreen of SPF 50 + (the highest amount under the new FDA SPF regulations) daily. It’s never too late.
L’OREAL Paris Sublime Sun Collection is one of the best sunscreen lines out there. This collection provides multi-layer broad spectrum protection. This collection comes in a variety of textures; ultra-sheer clear spray, lightweight lotion spray, silky smooth body and face lotions.

With so many body products on the market, it can be difficult choosing the right one. More and more brands are coming out with “yummy” products for the skin—whether it’s a deliciously scented body wash or an invigorating exfoliator that utilizes natural ingredients to get the job done. And if you thought food was only good for eating, think again! These days it seems like every skincare brand is coming out with their own take on body products with food in them—and for good reason. Milk brightens and radiates the skin while coffee serves as the perfect skin exfoliator and softener. The antioxidants in grapefruit helps flush out ugly toxins from the skin while the antibacterial properties of vinalla bean make it the perfect candidate for fighting off acne. No matter what skin type you have or what your preference is when it comes to body care products, here’s a roundup of 26 of the yummiest, most scrumptious body products: from fruit-infused cleansers to ultra-smooth body butters.

What do you find at the intersections of brains and beauty? We found 25- year old Rosanna Chichester, the 59th Miss British Virgin Islands of 2013. This honest to goodness beauty and intellect did not always feel inspired to reach the top, but once she focused on her many talents, nothing could stop her. You would never know that she was once a shy and inward girl! The annual BVI Emancipation Festival attracts visitors from all around the globe. Initiated in 1976 with the Emancipation of Slavery, the Miss British Virgin Islands Pageant, has been part of the celebrations since then. This being the 60th year – note a historic fact that the Pageant was first held at the St.George’s Anglican Church. It is one of the many events held during the two-week festival, which specifically celebrates and benefits the young women of the islands. It provides young ladies of the BVI with opportunities to achieve their educational aspirations through scholarships, and enhances their personal and professional growth in so many ways.
POSH GIRL
Before you jump to conclusions, today’s beauty pageants aren’t just about being beautiful and photogenic anymore. Sitting down with Rosanna, we got to experience her combined magic first hand. We found that the past competitions she has won require not just being a pretty face. In reality, it’s about a lot more than that. Rosanna began her ambitious desire and focus on becoming a success at everything she did by realizing that her shyness was not going to stand in the way of achievement. She says that, “I have learned that we all face challenges in our lives that will either make us or break us. In fact, staying focused on achieving the goal ahead is what pushed me to become the lady I am today.”
32 CARIBBEANPOSH.COM
When asked how she would define beauty, Rosanna did not hesitate: “True beauty is not something you can see by looking at a person’s face or body - it’s what you see when you look into their eyes. When someone holds inside pure and natural qualities like kindness. Beauty to me is someone being amazing without realizing it and doing something incredible for no other reason than it simply feeling like the right thing to do. I think the most beautiful people out there are the ones who don’t even know they are.” Today, this is the stuff that makes up a true beauty pageant contestant and winner. But that’s not all. For Rosanna’s career aspirations she looks ahead to becoming a clinical psychology counselor – her chances to achieve her goals are now many steps closer since she won a coveted four-year scholarship. And while working full time as a Business Account Representative at CCT Global Communications, she also attends H. Lavity Stoutt Community College. She wants to go on to earn a Master’s degree in Psychology.

Before you think that her beauty and brains were all that were recognized by the judges last year, she also walked away with the Miss Popularity prize award, as well as Miss Poise, Best BVI Promotion, Best Swim Wear, Best Cultural Costume, Best Evening Wear, and last but not least – Miss Intellect! Rosanna, will go on to represent the British Virgin Islands at Miss Universe 2014. Wrapped in the blessings of her poise, passion, and intelligence she will surely be an outstanding ambassador of her country. She is no stranger to pageant participation and has been in competitions for some time. She will bring with her the prestigious title of Miss Teen British Virgin Islands that she won in 2007, and the St. Kitts Miss Haynes Caribbean Teen Pageant, where she garnered the Miss Photogenic Prize. Along the way, being humble and courteous has also been a blessing for Rosanna who speaks to different schools and other civic groups to share her experiences. One of her main topics is encouraging students to love one another, to be helpful and friendly towards each other. She listens effortlessly to their stories about being bullied, or what they may want to do when they are grown. Encouraging each and every one of them to believe in themselves, to have faith in their abilities and to know that they are capable of achieving greatness, is what brought her full circle in self- awareness. Included in her many philanthropic endeavors, she takes part in promoting cancer education, which was her chosen platform during her competition in the Pageant. Getting the attention of her community to this deadly illness is part of her motivation - not just for women, but also for all of us. Sadly, both her grandparents died of cancer. We are very excited to see this inspiring young woman take off in the direction of her dreams. Rosanna Chichester is a winner in so many ways. She walks in true beauty and she has a dream smile. In our conversation with her:
POSH: WHO IS ROSANNA CHICHESTER? RC: I know myself as a creation of God, age 25 I am ambitious, strong minded, focus and independent. I was once a very shy child growing up, I have learned that we all face challenges in our life that would either make us or break us. In fact, staying focus on achieving the goal ahead is what pushes me to become the lady I am today. I competed and won the prestigious title of Miss Teen British Virgin Islands 2007. I went on to represent the BVI at the Miss Haynes Caribbean Teen Pageant held in St. Kitts the following year. I may not have came out victorious by capturing the crown at Miss Haynes Caribbean Talented Teen that year but I won the hearts of many and the Miss Photogenic Prize. After graduating from Elmore Stoutt High School 2006, I went on to work in the Banking Industry from 2007 - 2014. Currently I am studying Human Services and Clinical Psychology counseling at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College, upon finishing my studies I do look forward to furthering my studies to obtain my Master Degree in Psychology.
POSH: WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO PAGEANTRY? RC: Pageantry to me was never about the crown or the sash, I always looked at pageantry as a way to help build my self-esteem. Being shy growing up I always looked at the girls in pageants and wish I could walk, talk and stand tall like them. I said to myself one day that would be me on stage, for I was that young girl who looked at a queen as my role model on how to be a lady.
POSH: WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO THE MISS BVI PAGEANT IN PARTICULAR? RC: After I had won Miss Teen British Virgin Islands I knew that I wanted to compete for Miss BVI. Given the opportunity to be an ambassador of my country once again and the chance to gain a scholarship to further my education, I worked hard to make sure that I would become Miss BVI.

POSH: WHAT WAS YOUR CHOSEN PLATFORM AND WHY? RC: I chose Cancer Awareness because the topic is dear to my heart and very close to home. Both of my grandparents died from Cancer and my mother is a Survivor of Lupus which is considered relatively close to Cancer. I knew that I would wanted to educate young women within my community about this deadly disease, not only women but men as well. I think that so many of us are not educated enough about Cancer and I chose the platform as well to reach out to my community to show my support to fight against it.
POSH: WHAT SUCCESS HAVE YOU HAD AS MISS BVI? RC: Being blessed with the opportunity to visit and speak to different schools with the BVI. I shared my experiences as a young girl growing up being so shy and bullied for being so small. Bullying was one of my main topics in which I encourage the students to love one another, be helpful, and friendly towards each other. I listened to their stories about that they may have faced and stories about that they saw happening in school, what they did to help someone being bullied. Hearing from the students about what they would like to be when they grow up, I encourage each and every one of them to believe in their self, have faith in their abilities and know that they all can achieve greatness. Also being apart of the Cancer Society and being able to take part in many events to bring awareness to my community, from the Grand Gala Masquerade Ball held in partnership with His Excellency, the Governor. Taken part in the Cancer run & walks events to bring awareness, and marching in the Human Rights Day Parade.
POSH: WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF YOUR CHALLENGES IN YOUR REIGN AND HOW DID YOU OVER COME THEM? RC: I have not had any challenges thus far as Miss British Virgin Islands and I am blessed to have had such a positive and fulfilling experience, with my awesome team behind me I am bless for such an amazing reign as Miss BVI 2013.
POSH: WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED OVERALL FROM YOUR EXPERIENCE? RC: Being humble and courteous I have learnt so much, taken pride in knowing I was given the role to promote and speak about my beauty home The British Virgin Islands.
POSH: HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE BEAUTY? RC: True beauty is not something you can see by looking at a person’s face or body. It’s what you see when you look in their eyes. When someone holds inside pure and natural qualities like kindness, beauty to me is someone being amazing without realising it and doing something incredible for no other reason than it simply feeling like the right thing to do. I think the most beautiful people out there are the ones who don’t even know they are.

POSH: WHAT ARE YOUR CAREER ASPIRATIONS AND HOW DO YOU FEEL PAGEANTRY HAS OR IS HELPING YOU? RC: My career aspirations are to become a Clinical Psychology Counselor. The Miss British Virgin Islands Pageant has helped greatly towards my career goals in affording me the opportunity to win a four-year scholarship to elevate my education.

Artistes like Chronixx only come by once in a lifetime. In 2012 believe it or not, the very popular hit “They Don’t Know” was the birthing of his pure musical soul. Nudged into the performance spotlight as Jamaica’s newest roots reggae star, he was content to humbly share his lyrical and production prowess privately from the chalice of natural creativity.
“I was working with Kellisa on her EP and realized how personal her songs were. I said I can’t make music like that because music is for everybody. Her response was: “how different are you from everybody else? They can see themselves through you. “ At the time: “I was going through a lot of things as part of my own musical journey. I went to Big Yard studio listened to the rhythm and I just started singing the lyrics for “They Don’t Know” from start to finish.” Chronixx recalled.

“I DON’T SIT DOWN AND WRITE. I LIVE AND BREATHE MUSIC.

d POSHFEATURES Challenged to bring out what he had on the inside to the fans he said: “I was never the sort of person to sing about me but “They Don’t Know “is a most universal song. In different places I have visited to perform and I had to change up my set, that song can never be left off my set, and I can’t sing it too early or too late” Chronixx said.
“The title of my album “Dread and Terrible” means whatever is good and pleasant to Mount Zion is dread and terrible to all those who hate Jah. We are the dread and terrible that people wished that we did not exist” Chronixx explained.
A lot of people think that they are just regular persons suffering, but when they hear an artiste singing about it, it becomes a humanity thing” he explained.
Noting his main musical influence as the late Dennis Brown Jamaica’s “Crown Prince of Reggae” Chronixx admitted: “Dennis Brown is my icon. He was dynamic in his music diversity and versatility. Dennis Brown sings rasta roots, unstoppable ballads. His voice is what I aspire to, where that element is compared. Our Jamaican musical roots are spread across the globe, and we are rooted in the earth influencing Rhythm and Blues, Blues and Jazz”.
Under the watchful expert eyes of his musician father Chronicles, Jamar “Chronixx” McNaughton has been absorbing the magnetic pull of music in the studio since age five.
Still young at 21 years old with a growing beard and dreadlocks, he was coaxed three years ago to trade in his pen and mixing board for the microphone by Zinc Fence Records producer Teflon Arnett.
Blessed with a sweet and beautiful voice and the inspiration to write hard-hitting relatable conscious lyrics his rising star recently sat atop the acclaimed Billboard Reggae chart.
However, he is not new to performance having been a choir director at the tender age of 14.
“It is just a song that shows you that you are not the only one going through stuff, and the song strengthens you.
“Dread and Terrible” Chronixx’s most anticipated album launched in April 2014 has been enjoying positive reception worldwide.
At age of eighteen, he performed at Wickie Wackie before making it to the bigger stages such as Rebel Salute and Reggae Sumfest.

“I AM A BIT INDECISIVE AS TO THE STAGE AND STUDIO. I LOVE BOTH EQUALLY. I DON’T LOVE OFF-STAGE AND OFF-STUDIO".
Calling himself simply creator, creative and creation in a different manifestation Chronixx has an appreciation for the studio and the stage.

“I am a bit indecisive as to the stage and studio. I love both equally. I don’t love off-stage and off-studio". Citing the challenge of having to deal with industry people, he explained: “not everybody notice that people have talent. The stage is like the studio the creative space to make music, and I try to make the stage as interesting as the studio. The studio is full of infinite possibilities, and you are not limited by your voice. If I don’t play an instrument I can get others to play.” Speaking on his recent three week 22 city European tour in March 2014, Chronixx told Caribbean POSH “it was a very very good experience, and the tour featured Kellissa, Dre Island and the Zinc Fence Redemption Band going on the road, jumping on a bus doing 22 shows non-stop around Europe.” Countries visited during the European tour included: Germany, Finland, Denmark, Austria, Italy, France, Spain and the Netherlands. From his teen years he has been a steady force in creating hitmaking rhythms, lyrics and first-class music production for various modern-day artistes from conscious artiste Luciano, to dancehall stars like Konshens, Mavado, Popcaan, and Vybz Kartel. “I don’t sit down and write. I live and breathe music. It is always in my meditation and it always a joy to put your visions out to people.” "For me music is a lifestyle. Some people would rather to go to studio, perform to writing music. When music is your lifestyle it is a 24 hour thing where I breathe, eat and sleep music.” Writing he said is “over-rated. Everybody is trying to write, sing and produce. It destroys the quality of the music. In life you have great singers and writers. Then you have singers who can write, and then you have great producers who can write and sing.” Writing is a gift to put things into words and words into music. A lot of great singers are not getting too far because they are not good writers. “How far can you go with a beautiful voice if the lyrics are not right?” he asked.
Mature beyond his years, he believes in peer unity, hard work and dedication to achieve dreams. “Jacob Miller and Bob Marley toured Europe together. Dre Island and myself did background vocals for Kelissa while on tour. I think what is for you is for you. Life is powerful and is not unfair, and repays everybody who plants a seed and watches it grow” Chronixx said.
"FOR ME MUSIC IS A LIFESTYLE. SOME PEOPLE WOULD RATHER TO GO TO STUDIO, PERFORM TO WRITING MUSIC. WHEN MUSIC IS YOUR LIFESTYLE IT IS A 24 HOUR THING WHERE I BREATHE, EAT AND SLEEP MUSIC.”

Possessing the proverbial golden touch, Sanjay Ramanand has over the years been steadily blending to perfection a number of popular Jamaican entertainment television shows with his special mix of vision and hard work. With his boyish good looks, stylish fedora cocked to one side, and easy smile, Sanjay has been entrusted with the ace production of popular mega shows such as Digicel Rising Stars, Magnum Kings and Queens, Intense and most recently the Wray and Nephew Contender. Defending his eagle-eyed attention to work he added: “I am not as cool and collected when I am working. I have a different personality where I will work towards a goal with tunnel vision. Although in work things will happen which will need solutions, having a cool head helps especially since I try to approach my work seriously.” He told Caribbean POSH: “I have all types of hats maybe 40 or 50 and they are not all fedoras. Hats are perfect accessory for men.

I don’t have a fashion style. Anything I like. I like the mesh, and hats, but when you get older and start losing your hair, the hats come in handy” Sanjay confessed. The oldest of four children born in Portland Cottage in Clarendon Jamaica over thirty years ago, his elixir for living well consists of keeping his childhood friends close. “Most of my social networks have a lot of my best friends who continue to work with me today. Growing up I had a lot of older friends who helped to keep me stay grounded and focused.
Life is for living and I don’t think about the afterlife, but living a productive life” he stressed. With music deeply embedded within his heart, his first taste at dee-jaying came at age seven while an elementary student in New York. “I had a cousin in New York who had a sound system and I used to deejay on his rhythms. Then I returned to Jamaica and had my first recording at 14 titled “Uptown Rebel” on Third World’s Cat Coore’s solo album. I wanted to pursue music, but Coore told me to finish school first” Sanjay a graduate of Hillel Academy in Kingston reminisced. Following Coore’s advice he achieved his first degree in Psychology from Florida International University. “You’re happiest when you understand yourself, and I went into psychology to figure out myself. I eventually turned out what I had learnt to understand other people” he said. His mother was his greatest practical teacher in psychology. “My mother gave me the best insights into psychology because she provided the psychological groundwork for me as a child, in how she interacted with me. The greatest lessons she taught me was to watch someone’s body language more than the words they say” Sanjay said. Still the entertainment bug bit him harder.

Given the opportunity to work since 2003 with the ground-breaking talent show Rising Stars, he has been counting his lucky stars. “I started off in the music industry as an artist first solely, but I was invited to be a production assistant on Rising Stars which was the beginning of everything. The management at Digicel saw how competent I was, and then made me floor manager and then assistant producer. To be honest I wish that everything in life was seamless as my life in media. I am not formally trained in media and everything has happened kind of serependitiously” Sanjay confessed. He is co-host of the hype entertainment packaged show “Intense” aired on Television Jamaica. With one of his first mentors being Mikey Bennett, and major influences in Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, and dancehall heavy-weights Supercat, Shabba Ranks, Beenie Man and Bounty Killa; he never forgot his original music career dream.
“My plan was to get into the dancehall, and then later I would focus on reggae. One of the biggest lessons I have learnt from an early age is that there has to be a connection between the way I look and the sound. “Some people have me as a cool contented person, and when they hear my dancehall it does not resonate. I can be a sing jay like on “Man of My Word” and “Lonely”, as well as dancehall stuff; I just leave it to my creativity”.
Pleased to have received the respect of his peers in the music industry he has worked with some of Jamaica’s top producers in the business like Stephen McGregor, Don Corleone, Christopher Birch and Arif Cooper. Now enjoying the growing popularity of his latest single with reggae sensation Tanya Stephens entitled “In the Corners of My Mind” he is now re-connecting with his fan base through his spectacular video representation. “I have always been a fan of Tanya Stephens, and I respect her as one of the most lyrical artistes to come out of Jamaica. The equally potent video for the single contains a universal antidomestic violence message. “The concept for the video was Tanya’s. I had an idea for a cool love song. I wrote the hook or chorus for the song did the demo, produced the track sent it to her and she wrote the rest of the song. A lot of people have been saying that the way we played the parts well of two lovers leaving other in the video was very believable. I had a natural connection with the song and so it was easy for me to convey that in the video” he said. His advice for persons wishing to enter the field of entertainment is to “educate yourself as much about the industry, be disciplined, work hard, and don’t be afraid to start where you are.”

However, believe it or not traversing millions of miles from his homeland Jamaica to Africa, Europe and North America is bittersweet for him.
A popular Jamaican saying “If you want good yuh nose haffi run” is a personal mantra of the dub poet.

I was coming in from London after performing in Zambia and the plane was going nice and then I felt two huge drops. I grab on to mi chair and mek up mi face” McLaren told Caribbean POSH. Taking a cue from the reggae legend Bob Marley’s songs “Stir It Up”, McLaren has no issue with causing turbulence with his electrifying lyrics encapsulated in the magnetic artistry of the spoken word. “A lot of things disturb me. We haven’t as a people been as progressive as we could by being let down by poor governance…our leaders have not been held accountable. I have seen other countries with fewer resources than us in Jamaica making better use of their resources. Sometimes, we seem to be all about the hype and not the substance. Calling himself a social entrepreneur from St. Thomas, he is big on giving back to a country that has and continues to give so much to him including his voice. “I am a country youth living in the urban city, but my heart is in the countryside and am familiar with the community vibe, where everybody knows everybody and look out for each other. I love the countryside, rivers, picking fruits and watching the sun rise in the mornings” McLaren said. “Before I started in dub poetry, I started in theatre. It has a positive impact, and my intention is to raise consciousness, and entertain change as my slogan points out. The heart of my work is not just to entertain, but to leave something with my audience, and if I can leave someone inspired that is good. I keep abreast of current affairs, and if I can be an advocate or represent a cause I would have accomplished most of my work as a dub poet” McLaren explained. One of his most poignant pieces “Children On Fire” has brought to the fore the nation’s shock, sadness and angst over the fiery deaths in 2009 of seven young wards of the state at the Armadale

“I performed at the Jamaica 50 celebrations in London in 2012 at the O2 and it was one of the greatest moments in my career, which allowed me to take part in the flag-raising ceremony commemorating Jamaica’s independence on August 6. I remember the morning- I walked up to the stage and when the lights lick me I was transformed. I had a great patriotic feeling to see our people decked out in the green, black and gold. Being away from Jamaica made me feel proud and the experience was more impactful for me especially to see the Jamaicans there some of whom had not gone home for a long time, yet they held our culture and heritage high. “ As an ode to his beloved country, he performed the piece “Jamaica My Heart and Soul” to the packed venue including dignitaries and with thousands more sharing the special celebratory vibe. The piece he said was full of patriotism. “My Heart and Soul was about Jamaica and that I would stick with the country till I am old. BROOKLYN ACADEMY OF MUSIC:
DANCE AFRICA STREET STYLE Dance Africa is once-a-year event, held every May, at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York City. In addition to dance performances there is also a three day outdoor “market” that celebrates and showcases the artistic and craft work of a wide range of African cultures and countries. You can buy African clothing, jewelry, hats, body lotions, perfumes, music, and foods it is estimated that “Over 200 vendors from around the world converge on the streets surrounding BAM, transforming the neighborhood into a global marketplace” selling a range of African, Caribbean, and African-American food, crafts, and fashion.

The annual outdoor market feels more like a big party in a smallish city than a mall. During the Dance Africa Weekend BAM becomes the cross roads for the diaspora. The visitors to Dance Africa’s outdoor market have roots in St. Thomas, Barbados, Trinidad, Togo, Ghana, and Nigeria. It’s relaxed, multiracial and multiethnic, Pan-African, and a lot of fun. It’s also crowded but the use of parking lot space makes it manageable. There are places for kids to play; there is both face painting and crafts available. The bazaar is sponsored by BAM, and it is part of the rich and diverse cultural heritage of Africa and its diaspora. It is a great way to kick off summer in NYC.

BUNJI GARLIN
SIGNS ALBUM DEAL WITH RCA RECORDS IN CONJUNCTION WITH VP RECORDS RCA Records in conjunction with VP Records has officially signed on to release Trinidadian soca vocalist Bunji Garlin’s upcoming album. This news comes just weeks after announcing Garlin’s single deal between the two labels for his international smash hit “Differentology (Ready For The Road).” Billboard exclusively announces the details. “RCA/ VP will jointly handle sales, marketing, promotion and publicity. Garlin’s as-of-yet untitled album, reportedly a mix of soca, EDM and hip-hop, is due before the year’s end.” VP Records A&R Edwin Howell is excited about Garlin’s new journey. “I first heard Bunji in 2001 on his track ‘Gimme The Brass.’ He had such a unique voice, and I knew he had the potential to be a soca mega star. He can do reggae and soca, and now fusing his sound with EDM is perfect combo for the genre. I am happy to be a part of this venture and taking the movement global.” The anticipated album will be his first full-length release since 2007’s Global and follows his recently released digital-only EP Carnival Tabanca on VP Records.

Known to many as the “Viking of Soca,” Bunji Garlin has taken the genre to new heights. His explosive single “Differentology (Ready For The Road),” which was remixed by Major Lazer as well as Busta Rhymes, is currently a massive hit in North America more than a year after its release in the Caribbean. In 2013, the single received a Soul Train Award win for Best International Performance, was featured on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, won NYC’s HOT 97 FM’s Battle of The Beats competition and chosen by NPR as one of the year’s favorite anthems, as well as MTV Iggy’s Song of the Year. “When Digiwaxx Media first began to work Differentology, I knew this record had the potential to do something great on the urban radio landscape,” says Corey “CL” Llewellyn, CEO of Digiwaxx Media. “The recent deal between Bunji Garlin and RCA/VP is proof that the appeal of Bunji and the incredible music he creates is widespread and has immense potential,” he adds.
Born Ian Alvarez, Bunji Garlin is known for his high-energy stage shows, lyrical confidence and eloquence. The Trinidadian artist and international soca royalty is both a composer and performer of soca and ragga soca. The latter is a blend of soca with dancehall music that he made his own during the start of his career in the late ‘90s. He has won the “Ragga Soca Monarch” competition in both 2000 and 2001, the Young King title in 2001, the coveted title of International Soca Monarch in 2002 and then reclaimed this title for three more years. This past Sunday (June 1), Garlin recently performed at HOT 97’s annual Summer Jam. He will also be hitting the road throughout the summer, including dates on Mad Decent’s Block Party tour.

He worked alongside keyboard player Llamar “Riff Raff” Brown with Stephen Marley handling the final productions. On “Bogus,” he addresses a lack of sincerity in some women, while club-friendly tunes like “Comfortable (Remix)” ft. Wayne Marshall, “All To Me” and “Perfect 10” ft. If your boyfriend is telling you that your body language is confusing him, you probably want to know what you are doing that is attributing to the confusion. Are you doing things that make him think that you’re not attracted to him anymore? Are you unintentionally giving off vibes that you are not happy? Body language might seem to go unnoticed much of the time, but in relationships some people tend to pick up on body language more than others. Today we will take a look at 5 body signals that may be confusing your boyfriend. WITHDRAWING FROM A HUG. When your boyfriend tries to give you a hug, are you hugging him back tightly or are you just patting him on the back and resisting the hug somewhat. If your boyfriend genuinely wants a hug and he senses that you are pulling back, it may be confusing for him.
AVOIDING EYE CONTACT. Remember when you and your boyfriend first got together and would look into each other’s eyes all the time? If you are avoiding eye contact for some reason,
this could be confusing to your boyfriend. Be sure to make eye contact regularly so that he can see that you are interested and engaging with him. FLIRTATION WITH OTHERS. Are you using body language to flirt with others? Do you smile, giggle, and flirt with co-workers or when you are out and about? You might think this is just being playful, but your boyfriend might find it confusing. ANXIOUS BEHAVIOR. Are you jittery or anxious when you are with your boyfriend? If so, he might feel a bit confused as to why. Is something bothering you and you are afraid to talk about it or are you super stressed at work? Understand that anxious behavior can make a person think that something is up. Believe it or not, body language is far more communicative than you might imagine. If your boyfriend is acting confused, monitor your body language to see if you’ve been giving him mixed signals. Have a conversation with him about the topic. Honesty and communication go a long way in a relationship and the good news is that if you’ve been giving mixed signals and did not mean to, you can change your body language so that the situation is taken care of. Relationships can be tricky, so being open with your boyfriend is the best way to go. Spend quality time with one another and don’t be afraid to talk about every little thing so that your relationship can flourish.

NOT CUDDLING ANYMORE. If you used to cuddle with your boyfriend a lot and now you don’t, this could be confusing for him. Perhaps you have a lot on your mind or you are hormonal, but when he sees the change in behavior he might take it as rejection. If there is a reason you are not feeling like being close or cuddling, explain the reason to your boyfriend so he can know the truth.

You only get one body, so you might as well fall in love with it and treat it respectfully. Unfortunately, many men, women, and youth do not like parts of their body for one reason or another. This can cause them to feel insecure, unhappy, and cause unnecessary stress. It’s a fact that there really is no such thing as a perfect body. Even those that think they do have that perfect body have some sort of flaw or one thing they may not like about a body part. In a society that puts way too much emphasis on the outward appearance, it will serve you well to fall in love with your body no matter what it looks like! Maybe it’s not exactly as you wish it would be, but you can still fall in love with your body day after day and be confident in who you are and here are 12 ways you can do so: Pick a body part. Each day pick one body part and state one reason why you love that part. You can stand in front of the mirror and choose one part and either state what you love about it or state why you love it. For example, you might love your hands because they can help you do so many things throughout the day. Look at it. Many people refuse to look at their bodies in the mirror because they do not love the way they look. I challenge you to look at yourself in the mirror and choose to love your body no matter what it looks like. Love the curves, the love handles, the sagginess, the hair, and everything. It’s just skin and hair, so purpose to love every inch of it! Let go of control. Sometimes you just have to let go of control. You might not ever be able to get rid of the stretch marks, the love handles, the extra hair, etc., but what you can do is let go of your compulsion to control how your body looks. Do your best and accept the rest. Fall in love with your inner self. The more you love your inner self, the more you will love your outer self. Work on increasing your selflove and before you know it, you’ll be falling in love with your body and be more confident all the way around. Ignore others. You might encounter others that put a lot of weight on what the outer body looks like. The media tends to favor the skinny model type and guys with ripped abs and
flawless skin. Make a decision to ignore others when it comes to your body image. Purpose to love your own body as it is right now because that will make you feel good and don’t you want to feel good? Forgive yourself. If you’re holding a grudge against yourself for the way your body looks, for getting that big tattoo, for not wearing cocoa butter when pregnant, etc., just forgive yourself and let it go. Fall in love with every tattoo, stretch mark, and what others might call a flaw. Make a daily declaration. Look in the mirror and make a simple declaration that you love your body. Say, “No matter what, I love my body. Every square inch of it!” Do this daily or as often as you need to and you’ll find that repetition serves you well. Unconditional love. See yourself through another person’s eyes, like your pet or child. They do not look at your body and see one little flaw. They see you as radiant and lovable and if you can look at yourself the same way, you’ll fall in love with yourself often. Dress as you wish. When you fall in love with your body, your wardrobe may change. Go ahead and purchase outfits that you love and that serve your body well. Dress to impress yourself first, and let your confidence shine through your clothes. Pamper yourself. When you love something, you tend to pamper it, so go ahead and pamper your body well. Get a massage or a manicure and pedicure. Treat your body to some tender loving care regularly. Reward yourself. The more you change your attitude toward your body from negative to positive, reward yourself. Go out to a favored destination. Spend time doing what you love. Honor your commitment to love your body. Let fear go. You may have been holding onto fear of what others think of your body. Let it go. Do not concern yourself with what others think of you. That is their business and your business is to honor and respect your body no matter what. Just let fear go and do not let it back in. You can fall in love with your body on a daily basis. Make a commitment today to view yourself with gentle and loving eyes and as you do, you’ll begin to change your mindset and feel better about yourself inside and out.
