2021 COMMUNITY HEALTH ASSESSMENT RESULTS Every three years, Carilion works with community partners to complete Community Health Assessments (CHAs). These reports help us figure out the biggest health needs across Southwest Virginia. This year’s CHA results show five key areas where we need to focus our attention: • • • • •

Mental health: services, substance use, stress Socioeconomic factors: poverty, housing, transportation Health behaviors: culture, obesity, community resources, lack of health knowledge Primary care: access to services COVID-19: impact on families and communities

In the Roanoke Valley, the data showed issues with access to mental health services, high drug overdose rates and poverty levels, lack of broadband internet and differences in life expectancies based on where people live. COVID-19 also made a big impact on our health and well-being. Read more about our findings in the Roanoke and Franklin service areas in the graphic below. Over the next three years, we will use these results to guide plans to address these challenges and find new opportunities to make a difference in our communities. To view the CHAs for all of our community locations, visit CarilionClinic.org/CHO. For more information or questions, contact communityoutreach@carilionclinic.org.
