sta revista é um convite. Um convite para que nos visite, para que conheça os encantos e as belezas, descubra os recantos e as paisagens, desfrute da nossa melhor gastronomia e do nosso ambiente calmo, seguro e festivo. Foi esse, aliás, o motivo que levou a Câmara Municipal de Viana do Castelo a preparar, com todo o cuidado, uma revista que nos faz um roteiro pelas nossas principais riquezas, deixando muitas outras de fora, claro, mas enaltecendo e dando a conhecer alguns dos nossos principais tesouros. A fotografia, olhar único de um que nos mostra o que é de todos, leva o visitante pela nossa tradição, pela nossa romaria, pelos nossos costumes, pela Ribeira e pelos pratos de peixe que tanto a caraterizam. Mostra uma Viana plena de tradição mas também uma cidade moderna, com música e espetáculos para todos os gostos, com edifício assinados pelos maiores e melhores arquitetos de Portugal, alguns deles já premiados com prémios Pritzker. Mostra também uma Viana de emoções, de sensações, de peregrinação e de paisagens de mar, de rio e de montanha. Este é o convite que deixamos. Que, ao ver e ler saboreie e sinta o que os vianenses têm de mais precioso. O convite para conhecer uma cidade com alma, freguesias com vida e um concelho onde sabe bem ficar. Porque Viana é amor, mas é também terra que sabe acolher, que é hospitaleira.

his magazine is an invitation. An invitation to visit us, to be acquainted with the charms and beauties, to discover the places and landscapes enjoy our best gastronomy in a soothing, relaxing, safe and festive atmosphere. Moreover, this was the reason why the City Council of Viana do Castelo prepared, with all due care, a magazine providing us with an itinerary to discover our main riches, leaving many others out, of course, but exalting and giving us the opportunity to familiarize ourselves with some of our main treasures. The photograph, a unique look of one that shows us what belongs to everyone, leads the visitor through our tradition, our pilgrimage, our customs, as well as the “Ribeira” (riverside region) and the fish dishes that characterize it so much. They show a Viana full of tradition but also a modern city, offering music and shows aiming to please all tastes, with buildings signed by the greatest and best architects in all of Portugal, some of them already awarded with Pritzker prizes. They also show a Viana of emotions, sensations, pilgrimage and landscapes of sea, river and mountain. This is the invitation we are hereby proposing. An invitation that, while seeing and reading, will allow you to savour and feel Viana’s inhabitants most precious possessions. The invitation to discover a city with a soul, as well as lively parishes and a city council where it feels good to stay. Because “Viana is love”, but also an hospitable land that truly knows how to welcome.

Abraçada pelo Atlântico e pelo Lima, Viana beija em suave harmonia o mar e o rio. Talvez por isso, não há cidade portuguesa onde o amor esteja tão presente.

Quem entra em Portugal pelo norte, é a primeira grande cidade que se apresenta. E se há uma cidade imperdível em Portugal, ela é Viana do Castelo.

O “Coração de Viana”, como assim é conhecido, está em todos os recantos da cidade. Em filigrana dourada e com ar majestoso, ele emproa-se nas montras, nas janelas das casas e nos trajes típicos. The “Coração de Viana” (Viana’s Heart), as it is known, appears in every city’s corners. In gold filigree and a majestic look, the heart shows in showcases, houses windows as well as typical traditional costumes.

Embrenhados por este ambiente arrebatador, atravessamos o centro histórico. As ruas são estreitas e de pedra. Percorremos a pé lugares únicos e inesquecíveis, encontramos memórias e surpresas que levamos para lembrar e contar. Ao dobrar as esquinas, há lojas que contam estórias da história desta cidade. Há oficinas onde ainda se respira o saber-fazer, eternizado em peças de arte ou artesanato. Caught up by this sweeping environment, we crossed the downtown area. The streets are narrow and made of stone. We wander through unique and unforgettable places, meeting with many memories and surprises that we take with us to further remember and tell. In every corner, we find shops telling this city Historical tales. There are actually workshops where one can still genuinely breathe the knowhow, immortalized in artworks or even artisanship.

Viana é fiel a si mesma, e nas suas ruas ainda é possível cruzarmo-nos com a mulher de coração ao peito, que nos apregoa o peixe fresco e nos saúda com um sorriso rasgado, oferecendo desprendida a prova maior da cultura de um povo recetivo.

À medida que avançamos para o rio, as ruas simplificam-se e adelgaçam-se, e os edifícios ganham uma nova arquitetura, mais moderna, mas igualmente harmoniosa.

Viana is true to itself, and amongst its streets one may still encounter a woman wearing the heart on her chest that proclaiming aloud to sell fish and hailing us with a ripped smile, offering up the greater proof of a receiving people culture.

The further we wander towards the river, the simpler and narrower the streets get; the buildings acquire a very new architectural style, more modern, nonetheless remaining harmonious.

Em cada canto e recanto da cidade, sentimo-nos observados. Elevamos o olhar e eis o pulmão verde da Santa Luzia, reclinado sobre a cidade. Imponente, ali mesmo! Perdemo-nos, mais uma vez, de amores. Desta vez, seduzidos por aquela paisagem. Vamos subir! In each city’s corner, we fell as we were being watched. We look upward and there it is “Santa Luzia” green lung, a recumbent structure over the city. Imposing, right there! We lose ourselves, once more, filled with love. This time, seduced by the landscape. Let’s climb up!

Há uma brisa no ar ao longo da viagem. Cheira a maresia e ouve-se o som das gaivotas. É esta cidade/mar que mantém orgulhosamente enraizada a sua identidade. É este Minho genuíno que nos enche o coração. Atrevemo-nos a dizer que a alma do Minho está lá, mais viva e pulsante que em qualquer outro lugar.

Mas havemos de voltar… a Viana, e trocar o tempo ao verbo que Pedro Homem de Mello poetizou e Amália Rodrigues eternizou: “Se meu sangue não me engana/ como engana a fantasia/havemos de ir a Viana/ó meu amor de algum dia”!

Along the journey, one can sense a breeze in the air. Smelling the sea tides and listening to seagulls. This city/sea proudly preserves its rooted identity. This “Minho” (northern Portuguese region) fills up our hearts. We dare state that “Minho”’ soul is actually there, more alive and pulsating than anywhere else.

Yet we still have to get back… to Viana, and trade time to the verb of “Pedro Homem de Mello” (Portuguese poet) and “Amália Rodrigues” vocal interpretation both immortalizing it: “Se meu sangue não me engana/ como engana a fantasia/havemos de ir a Viana/ó meu amor de algum dia”! (If my blood does not deceive me / how it deceives, the fantasy / we must go to Viana / Oh my love of someday).

á imagens tão belas que ficam na nossa memória para sempre. Para quem sobe até o Monte de Santa Luzia, será difícil esquecer a vista deslumbrante sobre Viana do Castelo. O olhar perde-se pelo esplendor da cidade e pelas águas do rio que encontram as do oceano e daí se prolongam até às extensas praias a norte. Uma panorâmica considerada pela National Geographic uma das mais bonitas do mundo. Lá ao longe, é possível avistar a Ponte Eiffel, assinada por Gustave Eiffel, e que marca a entrada triunfal em Viana, sobre o rio Lima. Voltando as costas à paisagem de serra, rio e mar, a beleza permanece perante a imponência do Santuário de Santa Luzia, mandado construir pelo Capitão de Cavalaria Luís de Andrade e Sousa em agradecimento à advogada da visão, depois de ter sido vítima de uma grave oftalmia. As obras iniciaram em 1904 e ficaram concluídas em 1943, no exterior, e em 1959, no interior. O resultado é uma imponente mole granítica cinzelada, com uma planta centrada em cruz grega, de raiz bizantina. À mesma matriz vai buscar a enorme cúpula que coroa o edifício, bem como as pequenas cúpulas que encabeçam as quatro torres, estas já inspiradas no estilo românico, assim como a decoração que serpenteia a fachada do edifício. De estilo gótico são as enormes rosáceas, as maiores da Península Ibérica, emoldurando os belos vitrais que fazem com que a luz e a cor reinem no interior do templo.

here is beautiful images sticking to our memories forever. For whomever climbs up “Santa Luzia”’ Hill, it will be difficult to forget the stunning view over Viana do Castelo city. We lose ourselves into the view over the city splendour and river waters that meet the ocean and from there extend themselves until the lengthy northern beaches. A landscape described by the National Geographic as being one of the world’s most beautiful panoramic view. There, in the distance, you can see the Eiffel bridge, signed by Gustave Eiffel, which marks the triumphal entrance in Viana, over “Lima”’ river. Turning our back to the mountains landscape, the river and the sea, you find yourself facing “Santa Luzia”’ Sanctuary imposing beauty, back then mandated by Captain de “Cavalaria Luís de Andrade e Sousa” in thanks to the lawyer’s vision, after having been the victim of a serious “Ophtalmia” (inflammation of the eye, especially conjunctivitis). The works began in 1904 and were concluded in 1943, outside, and in 1959, in the interior. The result is an imposing carved granite mass, with a Greek cross centred plant, of Byzantine root. In the same cathedral, we can observe the huge dome that crowns the building, and the small domes topping the four towers, all inspired by Romanesque style, as well as the decoration that meanders the building facade. The huge rosettes are of gothic influence, the largest of the Iberian Peninsula, framing the beautiful stained glass windows, allowing light and colour reign inside the temple. 21

A somar à impactante obra eclesiástica, pode-se ainda passear pelo recatado jardim das Tílias, parar no parque das merendas, e ainda subir ao zimbório, onde se desfruta de uma vista 360º. Um verdadeiro ritual é a fotografia à la minuta no exterior do monumento. Manuel Gonçalves tem noventa anos e é ali, aos pés do Templo de Santa Luzia, que há mais de sete décadas dá continuidade à arte herdada pelo pai. É impossível não o avistar, sentado num banco ao lado da sua máquina de fole Carl Zeiss de 1910, sempre disposto a perpetuar a pose e o sorriso numa foto à moda antiga. Já perdeu a conta aos retratos a preto e branco que tirou, mas são muitos os que ainda guarda na memória, não tivesse a fotografia a magia de eternizar instantes.

In addition to the impressive ecclesiastical work, one can still stroll through the “Tílias”’ garden, and stop at the picnic park, climbing up to the dome, where you can enjoy a 360º view. Outside of the monument, the so called “fotografia à la minuta” (minute made photograph) is a true ritual. “Manuel Gonçalves” is ninety years old and it is there, at the foot of the “Santa Luzia”’ Temple, that for more than seven decades he has continued the craft inherited by his father. It is quite impossible to miss him sitting on a bench next to his 1910 Carl Zeiss bellows machine, always willing to perpetuate his pose and smile in an old-fashioned photo. He has lost count of the black and white portraits he has taken, but even though the photograph retains the magic capability to immortalize moments, many still linger in his memory.

A JOURNEY AMONGST NATURE

Viajar no funicular mais extenso de Portugal é motivo suficiente para entrar. Destino? Monte de Santa Luzia. A lotação é de 25 passageiros e a viagem faz-se a uma velocidade de 2 metros por segundo. Como tal, são precisos cerca de sete minutos para percorrer 650 metros, e assim vencer um desnível de 160 degraus. Pelo caminho, uma paisagem marcadamente verdejante, atravessada por um silêncio reinante, antevê a chegada a uma das panorâmicas mais belas de todo o mundo. É impossível não se render a tamanha beleza natural. Na cidade, a entrada para o funicular centenário, faz-se perto do hospital, na Avenida 25 de Abril, e as viagens repetem-se a cada 15 minutos.

Traveling on the longest funicular in Portugal is reason enough to enter. Destiny? The “Santa Luzia” Hilltop. It offers a capacity of 25 passengers and the trip is made at the speed of 2 meters per second. As such, it takes about seven minutes to cover 650 meters, and thus overcome a 160-step gap. Along the way, an abundantly verdant landscape, crossed by a prevailing silence, foresees the arrival to one of the whole world most beautiful panoramas. It is impossible not to surrender yourself to such natural beauty. In the city, the entrance to the centennial funicular is located near the hospital, by the “25 de Abril”’ Avenue, its trips being repeated every 15 minutes.

escendo até à cidade, completa-se a lista de monumentos de paragem e visita obrigatória. A Praça da República, em pleno centro histórico de Viana, é um manancial de monumentalidade. Três edifícios de enorme valor arquitetónico e histórico erguem-se na praça: o chafariz quinhentista, que durante séculos abasteceu de água potável a população; os antigos Paços do Concelho do século XVI, classificado como monumento nacional; e o edifício da Misericórdia, construído em 1589, e considerado exemplo único da arquitetura inspirada no Renascimento e Maneirismo, com influências italianas e flamengas, é um dos melhores exemplos do estilo barroco em Portugal. Mas há muito mais nesta viagem cultural. Vale a pena percorrer o centro histórico de Viana do Castelo, sem mapa e sem rumo, para descobrir os recantos escondidos, as pequenas praças, os becos sem saída, e os muitos tesouros do património português.

escending to the city, we hereby complete the list of monuments to visit and various stops. The “Praça da República” (Republic Square), by Viana historical heart, is a source of monumentality. Three buildings of enormous architectural and historical value stand in the square: The 16th-century fountain, which for centuries supplied the population with potable water. The old “Paços do Concelho” (small palace/formerly hosting the town council) from the 16th century, classified as a national monument. And finally, the “Misericórdia” building, built in 1589, considered a unique example of the architecture inspired by the Renaissance and Mannerism periods, with Italian and Flemish influences, being one of the best examples of baroque style in Portugal. But there is much more to observe on this cultural journey. Viana do Castelo historical center is truly worth visiting, without a map and without directions, allowing yourself to discover the hidden corners, the small squares, the dead ends, and the many treasures this Portuguese patrimony has to offer.

bout 750 years ago, between the river, the sea and the mountain, Viana do Castelo provided a lavishing natural environment. Not many cities could claim the same, brimming with luck to be able to enjoy, at the same time, the river’s beauty, Atlantic beaches of white sand as well as the mountains protecting it and providing places to look beyond its borders. Since then, Viana do Castelo has managed to preserve and keep signs of a rich history full of traditions. Viana has wisely accompanied the evolution of time by modernizing and rejuvenating itself, giving solid proof of a future consistent with its past. The requalification of noble spaces, such as the historical center and the riverfront, has bet on arrangements and constructions that involve some of the most respected contemporary Portuguese architects that who married modernity to the riverside front. Architects such as “Álvaro Siza Vieira”, who designed the Municipal Library; “Eduardo Souto Moura”, responsible for the Cultural Center; and “Fernando Távora”, author of the “Praça da Liberdade”’ design. This buildings collection actually earned Viana do Castelo to be classified by the London magazine "Wallpaper" as a "Mecca of Architecture". The "Wallpaper" wrote in 2009 and I quote that "a Portuguese maritime city is being transformed into a Mecca of Architecture, with a collection of buildings to the liking of Fernando Távora, and now the arrival of an innovative hotel in pile". We guarantee that the most northern Atlantic city of Portugal insists on remaining beautiful and charming, by matching the highest expectations of those who are lucky enough to visit it!

Trajar em Viana do Castelo já foi, entre meados do século XIX e inícios do século XX, um ritual nobre, repleto de preciosos pormenores e inúmeros detalhes protocolares.

Ainda hoje, a vianesa é identificada pelo esplendor do seu vistoso traje colorido, de lenço na cabeça, avental à cintura e chinelas nos pés. Ao peito, além do lenço, transportava e transbordava as melhores e as mais exuberantes peças de ouro da família. Expoente máximo da tradição identitária vianense, o traje, dependendo da ocasião, era adaptado aos vários momentos da vida rural. Assim, era diferente o vestir para o trabalho quotidiano do vestir para o dia de domingo, um casamento ou uma festa; desde logo, nas cores, nos materiais e na riqueza e exuberância dos adereços decorativos. No Museu do Traje, bem no centro do coração de Viana, pulsa toda esta tradição, espalhada ao longo de quatro pisos. O rés-do-chão tem uma exposição permanente dedicada ao traje regional, e uma outra dedicada ao ouro que completa o Traje à Vianesa. Na cave, onde já foi o cofre do antigo Banco de Portugal, estão guardadas as mais belas peças de filigrana, tão tradicionalmente usadas quanto acarinhadas nesta cidade. O primeiro andar está todo ele dedicado à exposição permanente “A Lã e o Linho no Traje do Alto Minho”, onde se acompanha todo o processo pelo qual as lavradeiras faziam o seu traje, desde o plantar do linho, aos diversos passos até se transformar em fio, que depois era tecido em tear manual e bordado por mãos femininas, que tão bem conheciam e interpretavam a sua cultura. E porque falamos em mãos femininas, o bordado de Viana segue uma tradição secular, também expressa neste Museu, e cujos padrões e motivos decorativos são reproduzidos na grande parte das peças que compõem o tradicional traje de Viana. O último andar merece igualmente uma visita, pois apresenta sempre uma exposição temporária sobre diferentes aspetos da cultura popular rural vianense.

earing traditional costumes in Viana do Castelo was, between the middle of the 19 th century and the beginning of the 20 th century, a noble ritual, full of precious and numerous protocol details. Even today, the girl from Viana is identified by the splendor of her colorful dress, headscarf, waistcoat and flip-flops at her feet. To her chest, besides the handkerchief, she carried and overflowed the best and most exuberant family gold pieces. The costume being the maximum exponent from Viana’s identity tradition was adapted, depending on the occasion, to the various moments of rural life. Therefore the daily work costume was very different from the Sunday one, the wedding or even festivities related traditional costumes; distinguishing themselves through the colors, materials and the richness and exuberance of the decorative props. It is inside the “Museu do Traje” (Traditional Costume Museum) that the whole tradition pulsates, right in the heart of Viana, spread over four floors. The ground floor offers a permanent exhibition dedicated to the regional costume, and another one dedicated to the gold that completes the Costume from Viana. In the basement, where the former Bank of Portugal once belonged, you may find that the most beautiful pieces of filigree are kept, as traditionally used and cherished in this city. The first floor is dedicated to the permanent exhibition "The Wool and the Flax in the Alto Minho Costume", where it is accompanied by the whole process by which the “lavradeiras” (lavenders) made their costume. Starting from the planting of the linen, to the several steps, until turning into threads. Threads, which were then woven into a manual loom and embroidered by female hands, who so well knew and interpreted their own culture. And because we speak of women's hands, Viana's embroidery follows a centuries-old tradition, also expressed in this Museum, whose patterns and decorative motifs are reproduced in most of the pieces that constitutes the traditional costume of Viana. The top floor also deserves your attention, since it always provides the public a temporary exhibition on different aspects of Viana’s popular rural culture.

Entre o seu rico e variado espólio, proveniente de instituições civis e religiosas, públicas e privadas, legados e doações de colecionadores particulares e aquisições feitas ao longo dos anos, o Museu possui uma das melhores coleções de faiança de Viana. Para contarmos a história da louça de Viana, tradicionalmente conhecida pela sua cor azul, temos de recuar ao reinado de D. José e ao período pombalino, mais precisamente ao ano de 1774, aquando da fundação da Fábrica de Viana. A louça de Viana conquistou por mérito próprio um lugar de destaque na produção nacional de faiança, afirmando-se como um importante centro produtor do país e, consequentemente, uma referência no Museu de Artes Decorativas. As coleções do Museu incluem ainda valiosas peças de arte sacra, azulejaria portuguesa e hispano-árabe, desenhos, pinturas e mobiliário indo-português do século XVIII. Durante a visita, merece uma observação demorada as salas do primeiro andar, com os alizares de azulejos, representando os quatros continentes, as cenas de caça e da vida palaciana.

ettled in a seventeenth-century manor house, which alone is worth a visit, the Viana do Castelo Decorative Arts Museum hosts the largest and most diverse collection of Portuguese faience/ceramic, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. Nothing beats entering and wandering along two floors, through the rich and complex history of one of the most distinctive and characteristic national manufactures, which no doubt marked the Portuguese creative aspect. Among its rich and varied collections, from civil and religious institutions, public and private, legacies and donations from private collectors as well as acquisitions made over the years, the Museum offers one of the best earthenware collections in Viana. In order to relate the story of Viana's crockery, traditionally known for its blue color, we must go back to the reign of “D. José” and the “Pombalino”’ period, more precisely to the year 1774, when Viana’s Factory was founded. Viana's crockery won by its own merit a prominent place in the earthenware national production, affirming itself as an important production center in the country and, consequently, a reference in the Decorative Arts Museum. The Museum's collections also include valuable pieces of sacred art, Portuguese and Spanish-Arab tiles, drawings, paintings and 18th -century Indo-Portuguese furniture. During the visit, the rooms on the first floor, with flagstones of tiles representing the four continents, the hunting scenes as well as the palace daily life truly deserve a long observation.

m 1955 foi construído em Viana do Castelo e à casa mãe regressou, após três décadas em alto mar. O Navio Gil Eannes renasceu em 1998, para a cidade, para o país e para o mundo, depois de profundas e significativas obras de restauro patrocinadas pela Câmara Municipal. Único e imponente, é impossível não o avistar ancorado na antiga doca do porto de mar, onde a cidade enamora o rio. Hoje, o navio Gil Eannes é um espaço museológico, mas nos mares gelados do Atlântico Norte foi um navio de assistência às embarcações de pesca do bacalhau, um hospital flutuante, um navio correio, navio rebocador e quebra-gelos. Mais do que uma lição de história, o Navio Hospital Gil Eannes é também um símbolo da cultura piscatória e da construção naval de Viana do Castelo. Desde os aposentos aos camarotes, barbearia, padaria, casa das máquinas, bloco operatório, gabinete médico e radiologia, tudo está reproduzido e equipado ao tempo em que o Gil Eannes andava pelos mares da Terra Nova e da Gronelândia. A visita, além de uma viagem pelo navio, é uma viagem pelos mares e pelas histórias da história. A bordo existe ainda um simulador que permite ao visitante navegar, virtualmente, a saída da barra de Viana do Castelo. Ao comando do navio, é possível experienciar a subida do rio Lima até à Ponte Eiffel, e deparar-se com uma vista fabulosa sobre a cidade de Viana do Castelo.

elcome aboard the unique exemplar of the 20th century Portuguese oceanic fleet. Built in Viana do Castelo in 1955, it returned to the motherland, after three decades sailing the high seas. The “Gil Eannes” was reborn in 1998, to the city, to the country and to the world, after deep and significant restoration works sponsored by the City Hall. Unique and imposing, it is impossible not to see it anchored by the seaport old dock where the city falls in love with the river. Nowadays the “Gil Eannes” is a museum space, but in the icy seas of the North Atlantic, it formerly was a cod fishing vessel, a floating hospital, a mail vessel, a tugboat, as well as an icebreaker. More than a lesson in history, the Hospital Ship “Gil Eannes” is also a symbol of the fishing culture and Viana do Castelo shipbuilding. From the rooms to the cabins, barbershop, bakery, engine room, operating room, medical office and radiology area, everything is reproduced and fitted out based on the period the “Gil Eannes” used to practice the Newfoundland and Greenland seas. Besides a visit of the ship, you will undertake a genuine journey by the seas and historical tales. On board, there is also a simulator that allows the visitor to virtually navigate, by exiting Viana do Castelo bay. At the command of the ship, it is possible to experience an ascension of Lima’s River up to the Eiffel Bridge, ending facing a fabulous view of Viana do Castelo.

he oldest manor house in Viana do Castelo: The “Casa Melo Alvim”, is a manor house built in 1509 by the historical center, later on transformed into a themed hotel around the filigree, managed by the hotel brand “Unlock Boutique Hotels”. The 20 rooms - standards, suites and deluxe - carefully restored and focusing on preserving the original architectural, historical and cultural wealth, occupy two floors, in the labyrinthine corridors with windows. omeçamos pelo peixe, não fosse esta a cidade portuguesa mais virada para o mar, com uma atividade económica, uma história e uma cultura popular intimamente ligadas ao Oceano Atlântico. Os pratos de bacalhau impõem respeito em qualquer mesa vianense, graças ao facto do Porto de Viana se ter tornado um dos mais importantes Portos portugueses na pesca do bacalhau, mas não só. Nesta cidade estavam também sediadas importantes firmas importadoras de bacalhau, quase todas inglesas, que arrecadavam o peixe de primeira, mandando para os outros mercados portugueses o de inferior qualidade. Ora, sendo armazenado em Viana o melhor peixe, aqui se aprimorou a sua confeção de modo muito especial. E é assim que, entre outras, nasce a célebre receita de Bacalhau à Moda de Viana. É obrigatório degustá-lo no restaurante Laranjeira, onde as postas do lombo são bem demolhadas e envolvidas em folhas de couve lombarda. São atadas com linha e levadas ao forno até a couve estar completamente seca. Já libertas da couve, as postas são passadas por chama de carvão para lhes acentuar o sabor a assado. Entretanto, o bacalhau é introduzido num molho abundante em azeite, cebolas, alhos, salsa, pimenta e louro e vertido tudo sobre batatas em rodelas.

We started with the fish, Viana being the seaward Portuguese city, with an economic activity, a history and popular culture closely linked to the Atlantic Ocean. Cod based dishes are strongly present at any Viana’s table, thanks to the fact that Viana’s Port once was one of the most important Portuguese ports in the cod fishing industry, but not only. In this city were also headquartered important importing companies of cod, almost all English, that collected the prime fish, sending to the other Portuguese markets the inferior quality one. Nowadays, the premium quality fish is stored in Viana, the confection of this fish has been improved in a very special way. And this is how, among others, the famous recipe of “Bacalhau à Moda de Viana” (Viana’s Codfish recipe) was born. It is “mandatory” to taste it in the “Laranjeira” restaurant, where the sirloin steaks are well soaked and wrapped in cabbage leaves. They are tied with line and taken to the oven until the cabbage is completely dry. Already freed from the cabbage, the pork is passed by flame of coal to accentuate the flavor to roast. Meanwhile, the cod dipped in a sauce abundantly composed of olive oil, onions, garlic, parsley, pepper and bay leaf then poured all over the sliced potatoes.

Como guarnição, é servido um arroz de miúdos e batatas assadas, macias por dentro e revestidas por uma deliciosa crosta estaladiça. Mais afastado da cidade, o conceituado e premiado restaurante Camelo é um dos clássicos de Viana do Castelo. A gastronomia regional é servida com a mestria de gerações, tendo lugar de destaque o tradicional Sarrabulho à lavrador. Sabe-se que, na segunda metade do século XV, uma quantidade significativa de vinho português era exportada para Inglaterra, muitas vezes em troca do famoso bacalhau. Naquela época, o centro do comércio do vinho não era o Porto, como mais tarde se tornou, mas esta elegante cidade costeira do Norte, Viana do Castelo, cuja situação no amplo estuário do rio Lima a tornou num porto seguro natural. Os comerciantes importavam mercadorias, tais como lã e tecidos de algodão de Inglaterra e exportavam cereais, fruta, azeite e o que era conhecido como "red Portugal”, ou "tinto de Portugal", esse vinho leve e ácido produzido na região verdejante do Minho. A importância de Viana é tal que, no séc. XVI, aqui se instala a Feitoria Inglesa e, daqui saem os vinhos minhotos para o Norte da Europa. Séculos depois, e com a qualidade dos vinhos a ter uma evolução admirável, Viana continua a brindar o paladar com requintados e substanciados prazeres do vinho verde produzido na região. Trata-se de um vinho único, fresco, ligeiramente espumante, que funciona especialmente bem com os peixes capturados neste porto. he story goes that the first Port Wine comes from Viana do Castelo. It was red wine fortified with brandy, which the sailors took with them when fishing on the great banks of Newfoundland. This one was traded through networks from England where it arrived as wine of Portugal, later shortened to Port wine. It is well known that during the second half of the fifteenth century a significant amount of Portuguese wine was exported to England, often in exchange for the famous cod. At that time, the center of the wine trade was not Porto, as it later became, but this elegant northern coastal town, Viana do Castelo, whose location on the broad estuary of Lima’s River made it a natural safe haven. Merchants imported goods such as wool and cotton cloth from England and exported grain, fruit, olive oil and what was known as "red Portugal", or "tinto de Portugal," this light and acid wine produced in the verdant region of Minho . The importance of Viana is such that, by the XVI century, the British Factory is settled here and, from here, the “Minhoto” regional wines travel to Northern Europe. The Brazilian writer Jorge Amado is a guarantor of such a category, arguing that a visit to Viana do Castelo was not complete without a passage through Manuel Natario's pastry shop. More recently, the British newspaper "The Guardian" highlighted the "donuts with cream", encouraging to taste this secret recipe, with more than 70 years of history in the same family. Famed for their delicious cream, which overflows on all sides, Natario's donuts with cream (Bolas de Berlim) are sprinkled with cinnamon and preferably enjoyed while still hot. In order to satiate your appetite for this pastry, there are certain hours to enter door 37 of Manuel Espregueira Street: every day, at 11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., with the exception of Tuesday, which is closing day.

Afamadas pelo seu creme delicioso, que transborda por todos os lados, as bolas de Berlim do Natário são polvilhadas com canela e comidas, preferencialmente, ainda quentinhas. E, para isso, há horas certas para entrar na porta 37 da Rua Manuel Espregueira: todos os dias, às 11h30 e às 16h30, com exceção da terça-feira, que está encerrada.

e origem comprovadamente conventual, este manjar doce pertence ao receituário do Recolhimento de Santiago de Viana do Castelo, que acolhia, entre os século XVI e XIX, mulheres nobres da localidade, viúvas ou órfãs. Diz a tradição que estes doces, em forma de meia lua, eram confecionados pelas mulheres recolhidas no convento e a sua venda era feita através da “roda” do convento. Esta roda era constituída por uma peça de madeira que existia em certas portas dos conventos e que permitia que, do lado de fora, se depositasse o que se queria enviar para o interior do convento, anonimamente, através da abertura da mesma porta. Assim, a mesma “roda” que servia para depositar as crianças, servia também para quem queria comprar as meias luas. As pessoas colocavam o dinheiro na roda, rodavam-na pela abertura própria e, do outro lado, as recolhidas colocavam as meias-luas embrulhadas em papel muito fino. Feitas com uma massa leve, que envolve o delicioso recheio à base de farinha de mandioca, amêndoas, gemas e açúcar; as meias-luas são daqueles doces que nos arrebatam pelo sabor e que não nos deixam sair de Viana do Castelo com a boca amarga.

his sweet delicacy belongs to the recipe of Santiago de Viana do Castelo Gathering/convent, which welcomed, between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, noble women of the locality, widows and orphans. Tradition says that these candies, shaped like a half moon, were made by the women gathered in the convent and their sale was made through the "roda" of the convent. This wheel consisted of a piece of wood that existed in certain doors of the convents allowing from outside, to deposit items or children to be brought inside of the convent, anonymously, through the opening of the same door. Thus, the same "wheel" that served to deposit the children, also served for those who wanted to buy the half-moons. The people put the money in the wheel, rolled it through the opening itself, and on the other side, the collected ones put the half-wrapped pastry in very fine paper. Made with a light dough, which surrounded the delicious filling based on “cassava” flour, almonds, yolks and sugar; the half-moons are those sweets that take us by the taste and that do not let us leave Viana do Castelo with a bitter mouth.

“SIDÓNIOS”

e ainda não provou os Sidónios de Viana do Castelo, deve fazê-lo o quanto antes. O nome e a forma em caixão é uma homenagem ao presidente da República Portuguesa, Sidónio Pais, assassinado em 14 de Dezembro de 1918. Esta iguaria da doçaria regional de Viana foi criada, há cerca de 90 anos, pela Casa Brasileira, a pastelaria mais antiga da cidade, fundada em março de 1902. Quem já provou os Sidónios sabe que todos os atributos usados para os classificar não são exagero. Confecionados à base de amêndoas, açúcar e ovos; quentes ou frios, eles são sempre deliciosos.

“TORTA DE VIANA” (VIANA’S PIE)

torta de Viana é um doce conventual muito apreciado no mundo da doçaria e, seguramente, a torta mais famosa de Portugal. A receita terá origem, em 1505, no Convento de Santa Ana de Viana do Castelo, pelas mãos das freiras Clarissas, apelidadas como artistas doceiras. Esta torta era tão importante, e apenas preparada para ocasiões especiais que, inicialmente, também se chamava Torta Real. A tradicional torta de Viana é leve e saborosa, feita com um inconfundível recheio de doce de ovos e polvilhada com açúcar, embora já se encontre variantes com recheio de geleias de frutas ou compotas e polvilhada a canela.

The recipe originated in 1505 at the Convent of Santa Ana de Viana do Castelo, by the hands of the “Clarrissas”’ nuns nicknamed as sweet artists. This pie was so important, and only prepared for special occasions which, initially, would be called the Regal Pie. The traditional Viana’s pie is light and tasty, made with an unmistakable sweet-egg filling and sprinkled with sugar, although variants are already filled with jellies of fruit or jams and sprinkled with cinnamon.

SWR Barroselas Metalfest é um dos mais antigos e respeitados festivais de heavy metal de toda a Península Ibérica, ativo desde 1998.

O Neopop é o maior e mais emblemático festival de música eletrónica de Portugal. The scenario repeats itself every summer: thousands of electronic music fans travel to the “Santiago da Barra”’ Fort in Viana do Castelo during August in order to listen to some of the most important DJ’s and international house & techno producers. Neopop is the largest and most emblematic electronic music festival in Portugal. In the historical setting of this port city, it is possible to witness the best of the world electronic music underground circuit. Desde a primeira edição, em 2016, o Viana Bate Forte foi colocado na rota dos maiores Festivais de Verão de Portugal, e nunca mais deixou de regressar ao coração da cidade de Viana do Castelo, no mês de setembro. Além de mostrar o que de melhor se faz na música portuguesa, nas suas diferentes formas de expressão, o Viana Bate Forte destaca-se pela envolvência e sinergia criada com o centro histórico da cidade, que nas 2 noites do festival recebe dezenas de milhares de pessoas. Os cinco palcos do festival são inseridos num património arquitectónico único, repleto de monumentos, igrejas e edifícios centenários.

Since its first edition, in 2016, “Viana Bate Forte” took place on the route of the biggest summer festivals in Portugal, and never stopped to reiterate the experience by the heart of Viana do Castelo in September. In addition to exhibit the best of the Portuguese musical world in its different forms of expression, the “Viana Bate Forte” festival stands out for its inclusive capability and synergy created in the city’s historical center, which during 2 nights receives tens of thousands of people. Começa agosto e a azáfama é grande. Há trajes para retocar, ouro para limpar, tapetes para colorir e colchas para revistar. Viana do Castelo é palco e protagonista de uma das maiores romarias de Portugal: as Festas da Senhora da Agonia, que atraem milhares de forasteiros à cidade e que lhes valeu, em 2013, a Declaração de Interesse para o Turismo.

Ao virar da esquina, Gigantones e Cabeçudos acenam num cumprimento de satisfação e agradecimento popular. Durante quadro dias, são muitas as razões para ir à Romaria: o Desfile da Mordomia, o Cortejo Etnográfico, os Tapetes Floridos das ruas da Ribeira e a Procissão ao Mar. No Desfile da Mordomia, é vê-las engalanadas passar com um sorriso rasgado e uma vaidade exacerbada, traduzidas uma "chieira" que só as vianesas têm. Centenas de mulheres jovens e menos jovens percorrem as ruas da cidade, trajando orgulhosamente a tradição da sua terra e carregando ao peito a herança de gerações. São quilos de ouro tecidos em filigrana secular, que abrilhantam o peito, ali mesmo junto ao coração. Procissão ao Mar é em termos religiosos o expoente máximo das Festas da Agonia, que tem lugar todos os anos, a 20 de agosto, feriado municipal. É o momento em que os pescadores, movidos pela fé, transportam a figura da sua padroeira numa embarcação e levam-na ao mar e pelo rio adentro, como forma de agradecimento pela proteção concedida durante o ano e pedindo ajuda para mais uma jornada de trabalho. Viana do Castelo is the stage and protagonist of one of the largest popular festivity in Portugal: The ”Romaria da Senhora d’Agonia”, which attracts evry year thousands of strangers to the city, thus earning, in 2013, the Tourism Declaration of Interest. The soul & spirit of the “Minho” region is there embodied in its fullness, among the festivities of “Nossa Senhora d’Agonia”. In the joy lightning up the faces of those living and visiting Viana by this time of the year through the fragrances invading the streets, in a mixture of flowers and regional delicacies. In the devotion with which the fishermen ask for protection to the Saint Patron “Nossa Senhora d’Agonia”; in the festive pulse that ceaselessly leaves us with a heart filled with passion for Viana. The setting is unique and incomparable. The streets are decorated, the houses windows adorned, and everywhere the city vibrates to the sound of drums, “concertinas” (accordions) and bagpipes. Around the corner, “Gigantones” and “Cabeçudos” (bigheaded paper maché giants) wave in a greeting of satisfaction. For a period of four days, there are many reasons to go to the Festivities: the Stewardship Parade, the Ethnographic Courtship, and the Flowery Rugs of the “Ribeira” (riverside area) streets and the Sea Procession. Amidst the Stewardship Parade, they are truly a sight for sour eyes, with a ripped smile and somewhat over the top vanity. Hundreds of young and younger women roam the streets of the city, proudly bearing the tradition of their land and bearing the inheritance of generations.They are kilos of gold woven in secular filigree, which brighten the chest, right there by the heart.

m terra, milhares de pessoas apinham-se nas margens do Lima para saudar a passagem da procissão naval, num gesto vibrante de fé e agradecimento, que rouba as palavras para descrever tal vivência. O regresso da Senhora à terra é feito pelas ruas da Ribeira, com o chão milimetricamente coberto de sal e flores, fruto de uma noite intensa de trabalho e devoção, que se estende pelo chão por onde passará a procissão. A tradição já tem 50 anos, mobilizando centenas de pessoas que trabalham alegremente de joelhos no chão, enquanto milhares de visitantes presenceiam o estender de toneladas de sal de cores garridas, pelas seis ruas que a Senhora irá pisar. Esta é uma festa que vale a pena entrar nela! Pois, como diz o canto popular: “Sou do Minho, sou do Minho / de Viana natural / Quem não conhece Viana, não conhece Portugal.”

he Sea Procession is in religious terms the “romaria d’agonia” (Festivities of Agonia) maximum exponent, which takes place every year, on August 20, a municipal holiday. It is the moment chosen by the fishermen, moved by faith, to carry the figure of their patroness in a boat and take it by the ocean and river, as a way of thanking for the protection granted during the year and requesting help for another working day. n land, thousands of people are crowded on the shores of Lima’s river to greet the passage of the naval procession, in a vibrant gesture of faith and gratitude, rendering us literally out of words to describe such experience. The return of the Lady to the land is undertook through the streets of the “Ribeira” (riverside area), with the ground thoroughly covered with salt and flowers, the result of an intense night of work and devotion, which stretches along the ground where the procession will pass. The tradition is already 50 years old, mobilizing hundreds of people who work happily on their knees decorating the streets, while thousands of visitors witness the spread of tons of salt of bright colors, along the six streets that the Lady will step on. This is truly a festivity worth partaking! For, as the popular song says: “Sou do Minho, sou do Minho / de Viana natural / Quem não conhece Viana, não conhece Portugal.” ;(I am from Minho, I am from Minho / natural from Viana / Who does not know Viana, does not know Portugal). 92

he “Arraiais de Santoinho” (popular folkloric festivities) have been a reference and a unique tourist attraction in Portugal for several decades, receiving hundreds of thousands of people from every corner of the world every year. There, between the months of May and November, you can taste the “Minhota”’ gastronomy, served in regional dishes; dance the "vira" (traditional Portuguese folkloric dance), accompanied by “concertinas” (accordions) and popular songs. The music is staged live, allowing you to experience the patchwork in the threshing floor, recreated in the old-fashioned way; or even enter the popular march, with bows and balloons, in the company of the “Gigantones” Bigheaded “paper maché” giant. It is also possible in the same space, to appreciate the granaries of the “Alto Minho”’ region and visit the Museum of Costume and Customs as well as the Museum of Transport, with vehicles unique in the history of public passenger transport, as is the case of the first bus to receive in Portugal a rental license for tourist transportation.

De facto, o seu colorido exuberante, a sua excecional riqueza decorativa e as técnicas artesanais que o compõem imprimem ao Traje à Vianesa um aspeto esplendoroso e diferenciador, sendo o único com o selo de certificação em Portugal. O Traje à Vianesa correspondia ao vestuário mais rico e vistoso que as raparigas abastadas das aldeias dos arredores de Viana vestiam por ocasião de uma festa ou mesmo para ir à cidade vender os produtos das suas produções caseiras. É composto da cabeça aos pés por um conjunto de peças, todas manufaturadas artesanalmente na região do Minho (à exceção dos lenços), por mãos talentosas, que mantém as tradições e os gestos consagratórios das suas artes. Desde as saias e dos aventais, que são tecidos em tear manual; às camisas, às barras das saias, aos coletes e às algibeiras, que são bordadas à mão; ou às chinelas que saem das mãos do artesão João Duro; cada peça do traje é uma peça de arte e engenho.

o dress in Viana do Castelo was in the nineteenth century a ritual full of delicacy and meticulousness, especially for women, who dressed according to their social condition, the rhythms and moments of their rural life. History has become a tradition and art went on to the point where Viana’s Costume turned into a local symbol and an image of Portugal, much advertised by the folkloric traditional dances. In fact, its exuberant coloring, its exceptional decorative richness and the artisan techniques that compose it give the “Traje à Vianesa” a splendorous and differentiating aspect, being the only one rewarded with the seal of certification in Portugal. The “Traje à Vianesa” corresponded to the richer and dressier clothing that the villages’ wealthy girls around Viana dressed for a party or even to go to the city selling the homemade products. It is composed from head to toe by a set of pieces, all handcrafted in the “Minho”’ region (with the exception of handkerchiefs), by talented hands, which maintains the traditions and the consecratory gestures of their arts. From skirts and aprons, which are woven with manual looms; the shirts, the skirts broidery, the vests and pockets, which are embroidered by hand; or the slippers by the hands of the craftsman “João Duro”; each piece of costume is truly a piece of art and ingenuity.

Talhada em flanela vermelha, azul, verde ou preta, ela assume a forma de coração e é profusamente bordada com missangas, vidrilhos e lantejoulas, acrescentando-se muitas vezes em bordado as palavras “AMOR” ou “VIANA”. Nas pernas, as mulheres albergam meias brancas até ao joelho, feitas em renda manual de fio de algodão, quase sempre trabalhadas com dezenas de pontos de renda. Finalmente, os pés são presenteados com um par de chinelas de manufatura artesanal, com a sola em madeira e a gáspea em calfe. Normalmente em verniz preto, elas podem apresentar-se lisas ou com bordados. Atualmente, a mulher de Viana reserva o seu traje para as Festas da Agonia, momento alto do ano em que a arte e a cultura popular de Viana do Castelo saem para a rua. As peças continuam a ser trabalhadas manualmente pelo génio de alguns artesãos, que fazem das origens a sua inspiração e do artesanato o seu modo de vida.

É feito em lã com ramagens estampadas e franjas compridas e obedece a uma adequação cromática relativamente às restantes peças do traje, podendo ser em tons de vermelho, azul, verde, laranja, amarelo ou preto. A camisa, essa, é sempre branca, confecionada originalmente em linho, e decorada com bordados nos punhos e ombros. O seu bordado é sempre monocromático, predominando o azul forte, mas também se admitem cores como o branco, azul claro e verde. Por cima da camisa, a mulher vianense alberga um colete curto em fazenda de lã colorida: vermelha, azul, verde, consoante o fato a que se destina. É bordado junto à cintura na barra de veludo e enfatizado com fitas, galões, missangas e vidrilhos. Na parte inferior, a saia do Traje à Vianesa é feita com lã e tecida em tear manual, apresentando sempre listas verticais de cores fortes contrastantes com o tom base da saia. À saia é acrescentado um cós e um “forro”, muitas das vezes ostentados com bordados, para que esta consiga cobrir o meio da perna da rapariga. Sobre a saia, um avental, também ele tecido em tear manual, que é decorado com padrão de riscas na parte superior, e com desenhos florais ou geométricos bordados a lã na parte inferior.

n the legs, women hold knee-length white stockings made of hand-laced cotton yarn, usually crafted with dozens of lace stitches. Finally, the feet are presented with a pair of handmade slippers, with the wooden made sole and its upper part in calf. Usually in black varnish, they can be smooth or embroidered. Nowadays, Viana's women dedicate their traditional costume essentially for the Agonia popular Festivities, the year’s peak period, when Viana do Castelo art and popular culture take on the streets. The costumes keep on being crafted manually by some gifted artisans, who make the origins their inspiration and the craft their way of life.

et us start with the handkerchief, worn on the head and traced over the chest. It is the only industrial production coming from a warehouse known as "Austrian handkerchief". It is wool made with stamped rags and long fringes and follows a chromatic suitability compared to the other pieces of the costume, which can be in shades of red, blue, green, orange, yellow or black. The shirt is always white, originally made of linen, and decorated with embroidery on the cuffs and shoulders. Its embroidery is always monochromatic, predominantly of a strong blue, but also colors such as white, light blue and green. Above the shirt, the “Vianese”’ woman is holding a short vest of colored wool red, blue green, depending on the intended purpose. It is embroidered near to the waist area by the velvet cloth and emphasized with tapes, gallons, beads and glass beads. In the lower part, the skirt of the “Vianesa”’ Costume is wool made and woven in a manual loom, always presenting vertical lists of strong colors contrasting with the base tone of the skirt. To the skirt is added a waistband and a "lining", often embroidered, so that it can cover the middle of the girl's leg. Over the skirt, an apron, also woven in a manual loom, is decorated with pinstripe pattern on the top, and with floral or geometric wool designs embroidered on the bottom. On the right side of the body, the pocket is still used, semi-apposite by the apron. Carved in red, blue, green or black flannel, it takes on the shape of a heart and is profusely embroidered with beads, glass beads and sequins, and the words "LOVE" or "VIANA" are often embroidered.

anuel Valença é bonecreiro de ocupação. Das suas mãos saem exemplares únicos dos gigantones e cabeçudos que, desde 1893, marcam presença na Romaria da Agonia. De pincel em punho, que utiliza para aplicar a cola, a tinta e o verniz, Manuel dá corpo a estas figuras simbólicas, que vestem trajes regionais e assumem profissões populares, como o cozinheiro, o padre ou o militar. Os corpos, outrora feitos em pau de giesta, são agora elaborados em ferro, culminando cada estrutura em 75 quilos de peso, distribuídos por dois metros de altura, aos quais se acrescenta a cabeça com 85 cm. As cabeças são feitas em jornal e cartão, sendo tudo reciclado, até mesmo o rolo do papel higiénico que, no caso dos pequenos cabeçudos, serve para unir o corpo à cabeça. Depois de aplicadas e secas várias camadas de papel, passa-se então à pintura, dando forma aos rostos e às indumentárias dos bonecos. No final, e para um resultado mais brilhante e duradouro, as peças são envernizadas para melhor preservar este património artístico e cultural de Viana do Castelo.

anuel Valença” is a puppeteer. Out of his hands were born unique exemplars of the gigantic and bigheaded men who, since 1893, have been present at the “Romaria d’Agonia” (popular festivities of Agonia). From the brush to the handle, used to apply glue, paint and varnish, Manuel gives shape to these symbolic figures, who wear regional costumes and assume popular professions, such as the cook, the priest or the military. The bodies, once made in “giesta” wood, are now elaborated in iron, culminating each structure in 75 kilos of weight, distributed by two meters of height, to which the head with 85 cm is added. The heads are made in newspaper and cardboard, all being recycled, even the roll of toilet paper, which, in the case of small heads, serves to attach the body to the head. After several layers of paper have been applied and dried, the painting is then passed on, shaping the faces and puppets clothing. Finally, and for a more brilliant and lasting result, the pieces are varnished to better preserve this artistic and cultural heritage from Viana do Castelo.

o Desfile da Mordomia, não estranhe se vir raparigas com um palmito ou uma vela na mão, protegidos por lenços dos namorados. Esta é uma tradição das freguesias de Deão, Vila Franca e Santa Marta de Portuzelo que, segundo a lenda, provava a pureza das jovens raparigas. Ou seja, se as velas votivas se apagassem era prova da não virgindade das mordomas que as empunhavam. Álvaro Sales Gomes é um dos artesãos resistentes das velas votivas e um guardião da tradição criada pelo seu pai, no final da década de 50. São necessárias mais de cinco horas para que Álvaro, rodeado de papéis metalizados, metros e metros de arame e de fio de trena, faça nascer 56 malmequeres e 20 botões de rosa, que irão decorar uma vela com 60 centímetros de comprimento e dois de diâmetro. No dia do desfile, as mordomas destas freguesias sobressaem não apenas pelos quilos de ouro que brilham no peito, mas também pelo papel de prata, que as mãos laboriosas de Álvaro Sales moldaram em rendilhado, e que as mãos das mordomas transportam de orgulho. This is a tradition of the “Deão”’, “Vila Franca and Santa Marta de Portuzelo”’ parishes which, according to legend, proved the purity of the young girls. That is, if the votive candles were ever to extinguish themselves, it would prove of the non-virginity of the maiden holding them. “Álvaro Sales Gomes” is one of the remnant craftsmen dedicating himself to the votive candles and a guardian of the tradition originated by his father in the late 50's. It takes more than five hours for Alvaro, surrounded by metallic papers, meters and meters of wire and wire, to produce 56 marigolds and 20 rose buds that will decorate a candle that is 60 centimeters long and two in diameter. iana do Castelo is more and more a point of passage for thousands of pilgrims who, coming from all over the world, choose the "Caminho da Costa" (Coastal pathway) to reach Santiago de Compostela. The pilgrimage route is undertook between the ocean, the mountains, the rivers, the settlements and the architectural patrimony. The entrance in the council is made when the pilgrim arrives at “Castelo do Neiva” and there finds the oldest known consecration to S. Tiago, outside the Spanish territory. The inscription dates from the ninth century and is visible within the local church, at the back of the right side altar. Already in the urban zone, throughout the city, Santiago is experienced, with the Mother Church welcoming the image of Santiago on its facade and with several other churches dedicated to this saint, such as the “Misericordia” or the “Recolhimento de Santiago”’ one. In Viana’s fortress, there is also a gateway to Santiago, which marked the entrance and exit of the pilgrims, and in the historic center, the XV century former hostel for pilgrims is now an Interpretive Center dedicated to the route along the coast. Before proceeding to Vila Praia de Âncora, 19 kilometers away, do not forget to collect the institutional stamp that certifies the passage through Viana, available in the cafes where you pass, in the hostels where you spend the night, and in many other services that Viana has to offer the along the way.

A inscrição data do século IX e está patente dentro da igreja local, nas traseiras do altar lateral direito. Já na zona urbana, por toda a cidade, vive-se Santiago, com a Igreja Matriz a acolher a imagem de Santiago na fachada e com várias outras igrejas dedicadas a este santo, como a da Misericórdia ou a do Recolhimento de Santiago. Na fortaleza de Viana, há também uma porta de Santiago, que marcava a entrada e saída dos peregrinos, e no centro histórico, o antigo albergue de peregrinos do século XV é agora um centro interpretativo do percurso pela costa. Antes de avançar para Vila Praia de Âncora, a 19 quilómetros, não esqueça de recolher o carimbo institucional que atesta a passagem por Viana e que está disponível nos cafés por onde passa, nos albergues onde pernoita, e em muitos outros serviços que Viana disponibiliza ao longo do Caminho.

GEOGRAFIA HUMANA LUGARES QUE ENTRAM NO CORPO Falemos de casas como quem fala da sua alma. Herberto Helder

muito provável ser apontada como escrevente suspeita por ser apreciadora (leia-se moradora) deste território geográfico tão a norte: e não é casa apenas pela propriedade de forma geométrica com paredes e vidro que abro com uma chave única mas por ter, em cada canto, um palmo de memórias que fazem de mim a criatura que sou. Imaginemos o avançar da (nossa) história sem cenários: como seria lembrar a infância se, à nossa volta, apenas muros em branco, sem uma janela ridiculamente florida ou as andorinhas penduradas nos fios elétricos? Se espreitar dentro deste corpo com que me adianto pelo mundo, sou (excessivamente) água e, noutro tanto, sou Viana do Castelo, que é também mar, rio, cascatas, lagos, charcos, chuva, lágrimas. E todo um ambiente que se estende pelas árvores compridas do monte, com as pedras conversadoras da mãe serra e os bichos a emprestarem a exagerada beleza, numa cena (tão) cinematográfica, ampliada pelo sopro da brisa atlântica, ainda a desordem das ondas a brincarem com o sargaço e o embalo temperado do rio a beijar as beiras e os homens. Fecho os olhos. Somos muito a geografia. Mais: haverá, por certo, uma ciência que deveria chamar-se geografia humana, num estudo rigoroso de como o interior dos viventes se molda às terras que o abraçam. E, portanto, somos festa e lamento, vento e luz, água e chão. De olhos ainda fechados, posso ouvir os cantos do mar, as corridas de crianças pela bacia do Cabedelo, o silêncio para contemplar lagartos nas rochas pretas da praia Norte. As conversas de mãos dadas pelas ruas mais antigas, as celebrações no redondo da grande praça, o abraço inesperado na avenida principal. E o apito do comboio, a anunciar a vinda de uns, a partida de outros, num vaivém de narrativas e invenções. Os poemas (ingenuamente) rabiscados num banco do jardim, os retratos tirados no zimbório do subido templo, o primeiro beijo nas escadas da marginal. E os bombos a imitarem o funcionamento da maquineta cardial. Ou, se investigarmos com maior particularidade, o coração a deixar-se levar pelas batidas dos tamborileiros e reviravoltas dos gigantones e cabeçudos, as mãos viradas ao céu para bailar as cantigas populares, os risos desatados das bocas mais soltas. E, para descanso das folias, as casas (ou gentes, que é coisa muito parecida) com limoeiros carregados a aparecerem nos vidros, as rãs a cantarolarem nos charcos de junco e os melros em danças primaverais por entre trevos e margaridas. O cheiro a pão acabado de fazer, a toalha estendida a vizinhos e forasteiros, o céu estrelado a aconchegar a vida. As mulheres douradas, os braços que apertam, os lugares que entram. E, quanto mais espreito, mais vejo Viana a acomodar-se no (meu) peito, num casulo de filigrana que se vai aperfeiçoando, sempre mais chegado, também enovelado, em que já me perco nas pedras da rua e nos ares salgados. Somos tudo o que vivemos. E inventamos, também. Porque o amor não é uma fórmula certa, tem muito de memória, tem tanto de poesia. E Viana tem essa geografia que se torna espantosamente humana, a entranhar-se pelo corpo e com complicação para despegar-se. Com precisão científica: não se despega nunca. Seduz. Ocupa. E aprofunda-se. Sem contar, viramos as areias que se revolvem nas águas do infinito e somos andorinhas que, mesmo partindo, avisam-se as primeiras a voltar.

t is very likely to be pointed out as a scribbler suspected of being a connoisseur of this geographic territory so far north. It is not only the property of a geometric shape with walls and glass that I open with a single key but for having, in each corner, a handful of memories that make me the creature that I am. Imagine the advance of (our) history without scenarios: what would it be like to remember childhood if, all around us, only blank walls, without a ridiculously flowery window, or swallows hanging on the electric wires? If I peer into this body with which I advance in the world, I am (excessively) water and, in other words, I am “Viana do Castelo”, which is also sea, river, waterfalls, lakes, puddles, rain, tears. Moreover, a whole environment that extends through the mountain tall trees. The talking stones of the mountain valley and the animals lending to the surrounding landscape exaggerated beauty, in a scene (so) cinematographic, amplified by the breath of the Atlantic breeze, still the disorder of the waves playing with the “Sargasso” (seaweed/ marine algae) and the temperate chill of the river kissing the borders and the men. Closing my eyes. We are very much geography. Moreover, there will certainly be a science that should be called human geography, in a rigorous study of how the interior of the living molds itself to the lands that embrace it. Therefore, we are feasting and lamenting, wind and light, water and ground. With eyes still closed, I can hear the corners of the sea, the children's races through the “Cabedelo”’ basin, the silence to contemplate lizards on the black rocks of the “Praia Norte”’ Beach. The conversations hand in hand over the city’s most ancient arteries, celebrations by the great square round area, the unexpected hug on the main avenue. In addition, the whistle of the train, announcing the arrival of some, the departure of others, in a series of narratives and inventions. The poems (naively) scrawled on a bench in the garden, the pictures taken in the dome of the raised temple, the first kiss on the stairs of the marginal. Moreover, the drums imitate the operation of the cardiac machine (beating heart). Or, if we investigate with more particularity, the heart to be carried away by the beatings of the drummers and twists of the gigantic and big-headed giants “gigantones”, hands turned to the sky dancing folkloric songs, laughter untied of the looser mouths. And in order to take a breath from the “folias” (excentricities), the houses (or people, which is very similar thing) with loaded lemon trees appearing to the windows, the frogs humming in the reed pools and the blackbirds in spring dances between shamrocks and daisies. The scent of freshly baked bread, the towel extended to neighbors and strangers, the starry sky to snuggle with life. The golden women, the arms that tighten, the places that go in. And the more I stare, the more I see Viana settle into my chest, a filigree cocoon that is perfected, always closer, also entangled, in which I lose myself by the street stones and in the salty air. We are everything we live. Moreover, we invent, too. Because love is not a right formula, it has a lot of memory, offering so much poetry. In addition, Viana has a geography that becomes astonishingly human, burying itself into the body, hardly separating itself from it. With scientific precision: it never does. It seduces. Occupies, and go deeper. Not to mention, we turned the sands that revolve in the waters of the infinite and we are swallows (birds) that, even while leaving, warn the first ones to return.

e alguém perguntar, pelo mundo, qual é o mais típico traje folclórico português, estou certo de que o traje de Viana será a resposta mais provável. O vestuário das lavradeiras minhotas, nas suas múltiplas e subtis declinações locais, completado pelo ouro que o orna, é hoje um dos melhores cartões de visita de Portugal. Na Romaria de Nossa Senhora da Agonia, no mês de agosto de cada ano, a cidade é um mar colorido desses fatos típicos de mulher – porque, em Viana do Castelo, a mulher é claramente a rainha da festa. Com predominância dos vermelhos, os azuis, os verdes e os negros, com outros tons à mistura, enchem as ruas de um matiz singular. Tenho para mim que o mais interessante neste orgulho identitário está na circunstância das novas gerações estarem já conquistadas para a importância de continuarem esta tradição. Vivo as festas de Viana há dezenas de anos. Não nasci na cidade, nunca ali residi, mas a naturalidade vianense do meu pai faz-me ser um visitante tão frequente que já me sinto parte da terra. Tenho vindo a acompanhar, nas últimas décadas, o crescente interesse que a cidade dedica a este seu tempo celebratório em que, por todo o lado, se espalha o ambiente daquela que é a maior Romaria de Portugal. Com isso, o artesanato, que já era famoso, renovou-se com imenso bom gosto. Comecei por falar das festas anuais. Mas Viana, convém que o leitor saiba, não é só esse tempo festivo, em que as ruas estão cheias e há música – ah! e os famosos bombos! – um pouco por todo o lado. É que Viana do Castelo, ao longo de todo o ano, é uma urbe que merece uma visita cuidada. A cidade é um feliz acaso de conjugação perfeita do monte com o mar, com as praias, com o porto de onde, em tempos passados saíam para as costas da Terra Nova os navios bacalhoeiros – trazendo o bacalhau, esse produto que se tornou icónico na gastronomia portuguesa. Começar por olhar Viana do Castelo do alto do monte de Santa Luzia, que tem no topo um santuário que a alguns lembra o parisiense Sacré Coeur, é um espetáculo único, em particular nos dias em que se pode observar o estender longínquo do vale do rio Lima, a areia das praias que seguem para o sul e a suave paisagem verde que, para norte, acompanha o caminho para a fronteira espanhola. Aconselho a que o viajante se perca pela cidade, pelas ruas medievais estreitas, que olhe os solares magníficos, parando nas esplanadas dessa jóia de harmonia que é Praça da República. Desça depois para o rio, visitando de passagem as igrejas, passeando pelo jardim público. Alguém que encontre lhe dirá onde se come melhor, sendo que a doutrina se divide sempre nos gostos, que só parecem ser unívocos em matéria de doçaria. O visitante que chegue a Viana não tem dificuldade em alojar-se: a cidade, turística por excelência, tem uma magnífica rede hoteleira, com belas surpresas para quem queira experimentar espaços menos standardizados. Nada ali falta, para uma estada agradável. Amália Rodrigues, a famosa cantora de fado português, fixou para sempre, naquele que se tornou no hino informal da cidade, a frase “havemos de ir a Viana“, assim expressando o desejo antigo dos habitantes das aldeias do Minho de poderem vir a fazer parte da grande Romaria anual à cidade. Cada vez mais, o país e o mundo concretizam esse desejo, pelo que Viana do Castelo se tornou numa das cidades portuguesas com uma particular atratividade turística. f anyone asks around the world what is the most typical Portuguese folkloric costume, I am sure Viana's costume will be the most likely the answer. The lavenders clothing, in its multiple and subtle local declinations, complemented by the gold it ornates, is today one of the best “business cards” in Portugal. During “Nossa Senhora da Agonia”’ festivities, in August of each year, the city is a colorful sea of these typical women's events - because, in Viana do Castelo, the woman is clearly the queen of the party. With predominance of reds, blues, greens and blacks, with other tones to the mix, they fill the streets on a singular hue. I think the most interesting thing about this identity pride lies in the fact that the new generations have already been conquered when it comes to the importance of keeping this tradition alive. I have experienced Viana’s festivities for decades now. I was not born in the city, I never resided there, but my father as natural from Viana makes me such a frequent visitor that I already feel part of it. I have been following in the last decades the growing interest that the city devotes to this celebratory time in which, everywhere, the atmosphere of that which is the largest festive event in Portugal. The handicraft, which was already famous, was tastefully renewed thanks to the aforementioned festivities. I started by mentioning the annual festivals. Nevertheless, the reader should know that Viana is not only about the festivities, when the streets are full and there's music all over the place- ah! And its famous drums! - A little everywhere. Viana do Castelo is, no doubt about it a city worth practicing throughout the year. The city is a happy coincidence of perfect combination of the mountain, the sea, the beaches, and the port from where, in times gone by, the “bacalhoeiros” (codfishing ships) went out to the coasts of Newfoundland - bringing the cod, that product that became iconic in the Portuguese gastronomy. Starting to observe Viana do Castelo from the top of Santa Luzia hill, which has a sanctuary at the top. For some of us, this sanctuary will surely be a reminder of the Parisian “Sacré Coeur”; it is indeed a unique spectacle, particularly on days when you can observe the far reaches of Lima’s river valley, the beaches sand that follow to the south and the soft green landscape that, towards the north, accompanies the way to the Spanish border. I advise the traveler to genuinely lose himself throughout the city, the narrow medieval streets, marvel at the magnificent grounds, making a stop by the esplanades of this jewel of harmony that is the Republic Square. Then go down to the river, visiting the churches passing by, strolling through the public garden. Surely you will encounter someone eager to give you a piece of advice about where to enjoy the local gastronomy, the doctrine always being divided into tastes, which only seem to be unambiguous when it comes to sweets. However, when the visitor arrives in Viana, he has no difficulty whatsoever to find adequate accommodations: the city, all the most touristic, has a magnificent hotel network, with beautiful surprises for those who want to try less standardized spaces. Nothing is missing there, for a pleasant stay. “Amália Rodrigues”, the famously renowned Portuguese “fado” singer, has immortalized the phrase “havemos de ir a viana” (we have to go to Viana) in what became the informal hymn of the city, thus expressing the old desire of the inhabitants of the Minho villages to be able to participate to the city’s great Annual festivities. Increasingly, the country and the world fulfill this desire, the reason why Viana do Castelo has become one of the Portuguese cities offering a particular tourist attractiveness. o speak of a land we truly cherish, in all its fullness, natural beauty, heritage, architectural and historical value, cultural dimension, richness of ethno-folk and gastronomic traditions, is always an arduous task to undertake. Firstly, because words, however rich and elaborate they may be, will always be short to express what lingers in our hearts; on the other hand, because we may be accused of being biased, over-exalting one land, like so many others in the national territory. After all, it is said that 'love is blind'. And I do love Viana do Castelo. Viana do Castelo has everything to offer when it comes to well-being in this 'corner of paradise'. It provides various rich environments such as “River”, “Fields”, “Mountain” and “Sea”, with relevant ecological beauty and conservation. It possesses an historical architectural heritage of remarkable cultural value, from the “Santa Luzia”’ ancestral citadel, to the seafront fortifications, to the mansions dating back to the discoveries period. Moreover, the Centennial Eiffel Tower, the contemporary buildings of famous architects like “Siza Vieira”, “Souto Moura and Fernando Távora”, (among others), to the set of statues and symbolic representations, wonderful works of “Manuel Rocha”, “José Rodrigues”, and so on... Embedded into a tradition-based mechanism, of folklore, festivals and pilgrimages, our “Princesa do Lima” (Lima’s Princess) leaves any other Portuguese city a “speechless”. In fact, we dare to say that the people of Viana do Castelo gained the expertise to create develop and preserve an ensemble of celebrations, pilgrimages and celebrations worthy of registration and appreciation. When it comes to these celebrations, they really knew how to create and connect unique ancestral identification elements in the national territory, which are the genuine region costumes, providing particular emphasis on the beautiful and delicate women outfits. Likewise, the dancing, singing as well as other popular traditions, generally assimilated by the population in general, but dignified, presented and represented with brilliance by the various folkloric and ethnographic groups, without a doubt, the best that we have to offer in all the national territory. Viana do Castelo is a wonderful city (and a council) to live in. Proving that, thanks to the experts and independent studies so often referring to Viana do Castelo as a city - council – and one of the best and most desirable to visit, enjoy and inhabit. Making a very brief reference to our most outstanding festivities, from the “Boas Novas” (Mazarefes) during spring season until the feast of “S. Silvestre” (Cardielos), at the end of December. I would highlight some that, in my opinion, are true bastions of our richest tradition, namely: The “Festa das Cruzes” (Crosses festivities), with its famous flowered “andores” (Alvarães) and “Festa das Rosas” and its delicate baskets of Roses (Vila Franca do Lima). In May; the Popular Saints in various parishes and places; the feasts of “S. Tiago” (Vila Nova de Anha). In July; “Festa de Santa Marta”, with its choirs of virgins (Santa Marta de Portuzelo), “Festa de S. Mamede” (Areosa), “Festas das Neves”, with the famous and ancestral Auto da Floripes, “Santa Cristina” (Meadela), “Festa da Senhora das Oliveiras” (Castelo do Neiva), “Festas de Deão”, all in August. Besides the aforementioned festivities, with their particularities, ethnographic and allegorical processions as well as their beautiful processions, many others deserve to be visited and experienced. Of course the “Romaria das Romarias” (Pilgrimage of Pilgrimages), the Queen of Pilgrimages - the Pilgrimage of “Nossa Senhora d’Agonia” (Our Lady of the Agony) – has indeed a prominent place in all this festive achievement, in which a significant profane part is associated with a religious component rooted into profound beliefs/Faith.

alar de uma terra que amamos, em toda a sua plenitude, beleza natural, valor patrimonial, arquitectónico e histórico, dimensão cultural, riqueza de tradições etno-folclóricas e gastronómicas, é sempre muito complexo. Por um lado, porque as palavras, por muito rebuscadas e ricas que sejam, serão sempre poucas para expressar o que nos vai no coração; por outro, porque podemos ser acusados de tendenciosos, exaltando em demasia uma terra, igual a tantas outras no território nacional. Afinal, diz-se que ‘o amor é cego’. E eu amo Viana do Castelo. Viana do Castelo tem tudo para se viver bem neste ‘cantinho do paraíso’. Tem Rio, Campo, Monte e Mar, com beleza e conservação ecológica relevantes. Tem um património histórico arquitectónico de assinalável valor cultural, desde a ancestral citânia de Santa Luzia, ás fortificações da orla marítima, até aos palacetes do tempo dos descobrimentos, à Centenária Ponte Eiffel, das contemporâneas edificações de famosos arquitetos como Siza Vieira, Souto Moura e Fernando Távora, entre outros, até ao conjunto de estátuas e representações simbólicas, maravilhosas obras de Manuel Rocha, José Rodrigues, entre outros. Situando-nos no plano da tradição, do folclore, das festas e romarias a nossa Princesa do Lima deixa qualquer outra cidade portuguesa de ‘beiço caído’. Na verdade, ousamos dizer que, as gentes de Viana do Castelo souberem criar, desenvolver e preservar um conjunto de festas, romarias e respetivas celebrações dignas de registo e de apreciação. A essas celebrações, souberam criar e ligar ancestrais elementos identificativos únicos em território nacional, quais são os trajes genuínos da região, com muito particular destaque para os belíssimos e delicados fatos da mulher. De igual modo, as danças, os cantares e outras tradições populares, de uma forma geral, assimiladas pela população em geral, mas dignificados e apresentados e representados com brilhantismo pelos diversos grupos folclóricos e etnográficos, sem dúvida alguma, dos melhores que temos em todo o território nacional. Viana do Castelo é uma cidade (e um concelho) maravilhosa para viver. A comprová-lo estão os especialistas e os estudos independentes que amiúde referem Viana do Castelo como uma cidade – concelho – dos melhores e mais apetecíveis para visitar, usufruir e habitar. Fazendo uma brevíssima referencia às nossas festas mais destacadas, desde as Boas Novas (Mazarefes), na primavera, até à festa de S. Silvestre (Cardielos), em finais de dezembro, destacaria algumas que, em meu entender, são verdadeiros baluartes da nossa mais rica tradição, a saber: Festa das Cruzes, com os seus famosos andores floridos (Alvarães) e Festa das Rosas, com os seus delicados cestos das Rosas (Vila Franca do Lima), em Maio; os Santos Populares em várias freguesias e lugares; a festas de S. Tiago (Vila Nova de Anha), em Julho; a Festas das Neves, com o famoso e ancestral Auto da Floripes, Santa Cristina (Meadela), Festa de Santa Marta, com os seus coros das virgens (Santa Marta de Portuzelo), Festa de S. Mamede (Areosa), Festas da Senhora das Oliveiras (Castelo de Neiva), Festas de Deão, todas em Agosto. Para além das festividades referidas, com as suas particularidades e com os seus cortejos etnográficos e alegóricos e as suas belíssimas procissões, muitas outras merecem ser visitadas e vividas.

Naturalmente a Romaria das Romarias, a Rainha das Romarias – a Romaria de Nossa Senhora da Agonia – tem um lugar de destaque em todo este quadro de realizações festivas, em que se alia uma significativa parte profana a uma componente religiosa de profunda Fé. À Senhora da Agonia vem a fina flor do que Viana do Castelo apresenta ao mundo: o trajar da mulher de Viana, num rigor orgulhosamente disciplinado; no vestir garboso dos homens, com as suas melhores indumentárias tradicionais, com muita chieira e vaidade. Das freguesias chegam as representações organizadas, especialmente para o tradicional cortejo etnográfico, onde são representados os usos e costumes mais antigos. Aspetos da vida e do trabalho rurais, sociais e costumes antigos dão um colorido e um tipicismo ao cortejo, que muito agradam às centenas de milhares de forasteiros e nativos que se deslocam propositadamente à Princesa do Lima. Os rigorosos e encantadores festivais de folclore, em que cada grupo do concelho assume todo o seu saber, exibindo-se a preceito e com o rigor exigido, são sempre pontos altos de romaria. De todos os quadros da nossa romaria aquele que mais me emociona é a realização da procissão ao mar no dia 20 de Agosto. Neste piedoso ato de fé a Nossa Senhora da Agonia, a padroeira dos pescadores e das gentes da Ribeira, é recebida nas suas ruas (da Ribeira) com uma fé redobrada, com uma emoção que jorra em lágrimas dos olhos de cada residente e visitantes, que prestam homenagem Àquela Senhora de aspeto triste, que lhes vale em horas de grandes aflições. Para receber a Santinha, as incansáveis gentes da Ribeira, passam a noite de dezanove para vinte de agosto em denodados trabalhos, executando belíssimos e, cada vez mais, artísticos tapetes de sal pintado, utilizando acessórios de pesca e do mar, transformando a Ribeira de Viana num verdadeiro quadro monumental de rara beleza que, pode não caber em nenhum museu do mundo, mas cabe totalmente no coração de cada vianense...no meu também. E vai a Senhora da Agonia mar adentro, em barcos engalanados, acompanhada de toda a comitiva, em dezenas e dezenas de embarcações, para abençoar aquele mar de onde se retira o pão, pago com suor, muito trabalho e, muitas vezes, com a própria vida dos pescadores. O regresso ao seu santuário é feito num ziguezague de emoção, de fé, de esperança e de alegria por mais uma esperada visita de Nossa Senhora da Agonia à sua gente da Ribeira. Viana do Castelo é uma cidade (e um concelho) próspera, com perspetivas de futuro evidentes, traduzidas nas suas estruturadas zonas industrias, nas suas vias de comunicação em expansão, na sua oferta cultural e desportiva, na sua disponibilidade de espaços de lazer e recreio, nas sua naturais belezas de paisagens, praias, mar rio, monte e demais dotes da natureza, nas sua tradição e respeito pelos valores das suas gentes, no cuidado posto na preservação do seu património arquitectónico, enfim, naquilo que Viana do Castelo é... SIMPÁTICA, BELA E ACOLHEDORA. Há já muito tempo, criou-se um slogan que traduz tudo o que descrevemos: VIANA É AMOR. Porque cada vez mais assim é, um outro slogan foi criado, com toda a propriedade, em torno deste AMOR, em torno do seu DOIRADO CORAÇÃO: VIANA NO CORAÇÃO – QUEM GOSTA VEM, QUEM AMA FICA. To the “Nossa Senhora d’Agonia” (Lady of the Agony) comes the best of what Viana do Castelo has to offer to the world: Viana's women costumes, in a proudly disciplined rigor, in the gaudy men outfit, wearing their finest traditional attire, with much “chieira” (pride) and vanity. From the parishes come the organized representations, especially when it comes to the traditional ethnographic procession, where the old customs are represented. Aspects of rural, social, ancient traditions and work give a colouring and typical look to the procession, which are very pleasing to the hundreds of thousands of foreigners and natives who purposely move to the “Princesa do Lima” (Lima’s Princess). The rigorous and charming folklore festivals, in which each council group assumes all its knowledge, exhibiting itself to the precept and with the required rigor, are always the pilgrimage high points. Of all the pilgrimage pictures, the one that most excites me is the procession to the sea performance on August 20th. In this pious act of faith “Nossa Senhora d’Agonia” (Our Lady of Agony), the fishermen Patroness and “Ribeira” (riverside) inhabitants, is received in her streets (of Ribeira) with a renewed faith. An emotion that gushes in tears from the eyes of each resident and visitors, who pay homage to that Lady of a sad composure, who supports them in hours of great affliction. In order to welcome the Saint, the tireless “Ribeira” (Riverside) inhabitants, spend the night of the nineteenth to the twenty of August, undertaking beautiful works, creating wondrous and artistic carpets made out of painted salt, using fishing accessories, turning the Viana’s “Ribeira” (riverside) into a true monumental painting of rare beauty. A beauty which does not fit in any museum in the world, but fits totally in the heart of every Viana’s inhabitants ... mine included. There goes the “Nossa Senhora d’Agonia” (Lady of the Agony) on the sea, in decked boats, accompanied by its whole entourage, in dozens and dozens of vessels, to bless that sea from which the bread is withdrawn, paid with sweat, much work, and often with the fishermen’s own life. The return to her sanctuary is done through an emotional zigzag, faith, hope and joy for another expected visit of (Our Lady of Agony) to the “Ribeira” (Riverside) inhabitants. Viana do Castelo is a prosperous city (and a municipality), with clear perspectives of the future, translated into its structured industrial areas, its expanding communication routes, its cultural and sporting offer, its availability of leisure and recreational spaces, its natural landscapes, beaches, river, mountain and other dowries of nature. Moreover, in its tradition and respect for its people values, in the care taken in the preservation of its architectural heritage, in fact, in what Viana do Castelo is. .. SIMPATHETIC, BEAUTIFUL AND COZY. A long time ago, a slogan was created that translates everything we have described: “VIANA É AMOR” (VIANA IS LOVE). As it becomes more and more a reality, another slogan was created, around this LOVE, around its GOLDEN HEART: VIANA LINGERS IN THE HEART - WHO LIKES COMES, WHO LOVES STAYS. A mais conhecida e considerada ex-libris da ourivesaria portuguesa é o Coração de Viana. Não há coração mais valioso que este!

ssemelham-se aos fios de cabelo, mas são de ouro e trabalhados manualmente com uma delicadeza extrema e uma técnica única no mundo. Os finos fios são entrelaçados uns aos outros, recebem calor para a sua união, e dão origem a uma peça maior. A mais conhecida e considerada ex-libris da ourivesaria portuguesa é o Coração de Viana. Não há coração mais valioso que este! Curiosamente, o primeiro Coração de Viana não teve uma motivação romântica, como a sua forma faz prever, mas sim religiosa. Terá sido a rainha D. Maria I que, num ato de agradecimento pela benção de lhe ter sido concedido um filho varão, mandou fabricar um coração de ouro, em devoção e culto ao Sagrado Coração de Jesus. Desde então, ele é a marca de Viana transposta pelo mundo, ao peito de célebres figuras femininas, como Sharon Stone e Carla Brunni. Apesar de ter produção conhecida em Portugal, desde o século VIII, a filigrana continua a ser tão tradicionalmente usada quanto acarinhada. O Coração de Viana é o elemento principal de todo o ouro que as mulheres do Minho carregam ao peito. O típico Traje à Vianesa é completado com diversas peças de filigrana, incluindo colares e brincos, que passam de geração em geração, carregados de tradição e simbolismo. É esse coração que nos enche o olhar, e que nos enche de orgulho e de saudades de Viana. Escolhemos deixar propositadamente a filigrana para o final desta revista, para que, tal como nós, possa levar Viana no Coração! HEART OF GOLD

The fine threads are intertwined with each other, receive heat for their union, and give rise to a larger piece. The most known and considered ex-LIBRIS of Portuguese jewelry is the Viana’s Heart. There is no heart more valuable than this particular one! Curiously, viana’s first Heart did not have a romantic agenda, as its form might predict, but rather religious. It would have been Queen Maria I who, in an act of thanksgiving for the blessing of having been granted a son, made a gold heart in devotion and worship to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Since then, it became Viana’s brand transposed by the world, to the chest of famous female figures, such as Sharon Stone and Carla Brunni. Despite an ongoing production in Portugal since the 8th century, the filigree continues to be traditionally used and cherished. Viana’s Heart is the main element of all the gold that Minho women carry on their chest. The typical “Vianesa”’ costume is completed with several filigree pieces, including necklaces and earrings, passed from generation to generation, loaded with tradition and symbolism. This heart marvels our sight, fills us with pride; ever longing for Viana do Castelo. We chose to leave the filigree craft for the end of this magazine, so that, like us, you might take Viana in your Heart!
