Nesta segunda edição dá a conhecer autênticos tesouros, fora das rotas turísticas que animam a cidade e o concelho, para o convidar a descobrir, saborear e conhecer.

The Viana Magazine is back. In this second edition, we reveal real treasures, outside the tourist routes that animate the city and the municipality, to invite you to discover, savour and get to know the city.

This edition is therefore an invitation for you to return to Viana do Castelo and find out much more than we have to offer.

Because apart from the famous Romaria in Honor of Our Lady of the Agony, from our wellknown traditions mainly linked to popular cultural heritage, such as the traditional suit and music of our ethnographic groups, our higher-ranking restaurants and our hotels, there is a wealth of experiences to sense, experience, there is more history, more landscape, and much more...

That is the invitation of this new magazine. Under the amazing and respected photographer Alfredo Cunha and with full texts of experience, find places like Serra d’Arga and learn the history and "stories" of our Eiffel Bridge, go downtown and see our Montedor Farol, stay in a different housing and go eat in our taverns, where the fresh fish and the sympathy of our workers bring the happiness in all of us.

This is another Viana that comes along, a Viana that's going to be worth knowing, an alternative that starts here and that will go, I'm sure, far beyond your expectations. There is still a lot to be told, and we will continue to give gifts to those who visit us with the best we have to offer: the treasures of our gastronomy, our tradition, our modernity, and our material and non-material heritage.

The Viana Magazine is back and will, for sure, make you want to return to Viana.

Esta edição é, pois, um convite para que regresse a Viana do Castelo e descubra muito mais do que temos para oferecer.

Porque para além da afamada Romaria em Honra de Nossa Senhora da Agonia, das nossas sobejamente conhecidas tradições ligadas sobretudo à cultural popular como o traje e a música dos nossos grupos etnográficos, dos nossos restaurantes de maior gabarito e dos nossos hotéis, há um manancial de experiências para sentir, experimentar, há mais história, mais paisagem, há mais novidades… É esse o convite desta nova revista. Sob a objetiva atenta do conceituado fotógrafo Alfredo Cunha e com textos plenos de experiência, conheça locais como a Serra d’Arga ou fique a saber a história e as “estórias” da nossa Ponte Eiffel, saia do centro da cidade e veja o nosso Farol de Montedor, fique hospedado num alojamento diferente e vá comer nas nossas tabernas, onde o peixe fresco e a simpatia do atendimento são cartão de visita.

Esta é uma outra Viana que surge, uma Viana que vai valer a pena conhecer, uma alternativa que começa aqui e que irá, estou certo, muito além destas novas experiências. Muito há ainda para contar e vamos continuar a presentear quem nos visita com aquilo que de melhor temos para oferecer: os tesouros da nossa gastronomia, da nossa tradição e da nossa modernidade, e do nosso património material e imaterial.

Viana do Castelo abriu-se ao mundo, confiante no charme natural de uma cidade pequena, que beneficia de três ecossistemas naturais: mar, rio e montanha. Mas, além de aconchegada pelo Rio Lima e pelo Oceano Atlântico, Viana é detentora de uma beleza medieval singular, marcada por ruas e ruelas repletas de tradições e história.

Com ou sem mapa na mão, propomos que percorra o centro histórico e aprecie sem pressas os pormenores que merecem destaque na cidade.

CASA DOS NICHOS NICHO´S HOUSE

A meio da medieval Rua de Viana, a Casa dos Nichos é uma das edificações mais antigas da cidade, cuja construção se situa entre o século XV e XVI. Além de bem conservada, esta casa chama a atenção pelas duas esculturas góticas erguidas na fachada, representando cenas da Anunciação: num dos lados surge a figura do anjo Gabriel, de asas abertas, segurando filactera com a inscrição AVE MARIA; e no outro a Virgem, segurando uma maçã ao lado de um vaso de flores.

O edifício alberga, na atualidade, o espólio arqueológico de Viana, desde a pré-história ao século XIII. Para além das diversas peças expostas, dispõe ainda de uma zona virtual, onde o visitante tem ao dispor meios multimédia para aceder a informação sobre o património concelhio, como a Citânia de Santa Luzia, as sepulturas medievais de Santa Maria de Geraz do Lima ou as gravuras rupestres de Carreço. Vale a pena uma visita!

In the middle of one of the medieval streets in Viana, the Nicho´s House is one of the oldest buildings in the city, whose construction runs from the 15th and 16th centuries. In addition of being well conserved, this house draws attention to the two gothic sculptures erected on the facade, representing scenes from the Announcement: on one side appears the figure of the angel Gabriel, with open wings, holding the quotation “AVE MARIA” and on the other side The Virgin, holding an apple next to a flower pot.

The building currently represents Viana's archeological state from the prehistory time to the 13th century.

Altought there are diversed pieces exhibited, there is also a virtual area in which the visitor has multimedia access to information on the local heritage, such as the city of Santa Luzia, the medieval graves of Santa Maria de Geraz do Lima or the rock engravings of Carreço. It's definitly worth the visit!

Viana do Castelo opened up to the world, confident in the natural charm of a small city. The city beneficts from three natural ecosystems: the sea, the river and the mountain. However, in addition to conarrival by the Lima River and the Atlantic Ocean, Viana possesses a singular medieval beauty, marked by the streets and ruels full of traditions and historical monuments.

With or without a map, we propose that you go through the historical center and observe the details in this old town.

Already in plaza of Saint Domingos, the Church with the same name persists from the ancient convent of Santa Cruz, founded by São Bartholomeu dos Mártires. It´s a five-hundred-year-old temple, built in the mid-sixteenth century, and its construction lasted almost a century. The facade has a Renaissance composition that framed the portal, which is flanked by columns with capitels. Between the columns there are two sculptures with the representation of apostoles.

In their interior, from a single ship, there can be admiration for several altars of gold strip, with a prominent proverb of the baroque cloth of the master chapel, classified as one of the most representative of the "national style".

In this church at the master chapel, classified as a National Monument, São Bartholomeu dos Mártires can be found entombed.

Na Rua Gago Coutinho, a Casa Malheiro Reimão é considerada uma das mais significativas construções barrocas da cidade e um dos mais belos exemplares da arquitetura rococó portuguesa. O nome advém do apelido da família proprietária: os Malheiro Reimão.

O solar com uma fachada longa ritmada por vãos, tem virado para a praça a Capela das Malheiras. Esta tem a particularidade de repetir em granito os motivos de algas, liquenes e concheados que no interior foram talhados em madeira.

Do lado oposto da rua, o fontanário evocativo da história de Viana, completa todo este conjunto datado da primeira metade do século XVIII, e que sobressai na cidade pela sua elevada importância urbanística.

At Gago Coutinho Street, Malheiro Reimão´s house is considered one of the most significant and importante baroque buildings in the city and one of the most lovely and appealing examples of the Portuguese rococo architecture. The name derived from the surname of the owner family: Malheiro Reimão.

The solar with the long front rhythmized by scabs, has turned to the Garden Square. This has the peculiarity and interesting fact of repeating in granite the motives of marine algae, lichens and shells that were carved in wood.

On the opposite side of the street, the evocative source of Viana's history completes this whole set dedicated to the first half of the 18th century. It really stands out in the city because of its high urban importance.

Já no Largo de S. Domingos, a Igreja com o mesmo nome, que subsiste do antigo convento de Santa Cruz, fundado por São Bartolomeu dos Mártires, é outra das propostas para visita. Trata-se de um templo quinhentista, edificado em meados do século XVI, tendo a sua construção durado quase um século. A fachada apresenta uma composição renascentista a enquadrar o portal, que se encontra ladeado por colunas com capitéis. Entre as colunas existem duas esculturas com a representação de apóstolos.

No seu interior, de uma só nave, podem admirar-se vários altares de talha dourada, com destaque para o grandioso retábulo barroco da capela-mor, classificado como um dos mais representativos do chamado “estilo nacional”. É nesta igreja, classificada como Monumento Nacional, que se encontra sepultado na capela-mor São Bartolomeu dos Mártires.

Há vidas que são verdadeiros poemas. A de São Bartolomeu dos Mártires, com todos os pormenores das funções que exerceu ao longo da sua vida, é uma verdadeira epopeia de fé e de amor, manifestada na dedicação aos mais carenciados.

Bartolomeu Fernandes Vale nasceu em Lisboa, a 3 de maio de 1514, tendo sido batizado na Igreja dos Mártires, na capital portuguesa. Mais tarde, adota o apelido “Mártires”, em homenagem à terra que o viu nascer. Recebeu o hábito dominicano a 1 de novembro de 1528, no convento de São Domingos, também em Lisboa. Em 1558, assume a liderança da diocese de Braga, sendo nomeado Arcebispo da mais antiga diocese do reino.

S. Bartolomeu dos Mártires viveu num tempo de crise na Igreja, no século XVI. A sua atuação durante o Concílio de Trento foi de tal maneira empolgante, que causou a admiração de todos os padres conciliares e do próprio Papa.

Foram célebres as suas intervenções na defesa de um tempo de renovação, e a elas se ficaram a dever muitos decretos da reforma conciliar.

Na etapa final da sua vida, Bartolomeu dos Mártires retirou-se para o Convento de Santa Cruz, na cidade de Viana do Castelo. Naquele local, hoje Igreja de São Domingos, deu expansão à sua ardente caridade para com os pobres, que já o consideravam santo. No coração do povo ficou conhecido como “arcebispo santo, pai dos pobres e dos enfermos”. É na Igreja de São Domingos que, por sua vontade, está sepultado, desde a data do seu falecimento: 16 de julho de 1590.

Bartolomeu dos Mártires foi promulgado Santo pelo Papa Francisco, a 5 de julho de 2019.

There are lives that are real poems. The one from, S. Bartolomeu dos Mártires with all the details of the duties he has performed throughout his life, it is a true epopey of faith and love, manifested in dedication to the most underprivileged.

Bartolomeu Fernandes Vale was born in Lisbon on May 3rd, 1514 and was baptized in the Church of Martyrs in the Portuguese capital (Lisbon). Later on, it adopts the nickname "Mártires", in honor of the land that saw him born. He was given the Dominican habit on November 1st, 1528, in the San Domingos convent, also in Lisbon. In 1558, he took over the leadership of the diocese of Braga and was appointed Archbishop of the oldest dilemma in the kingdom.

S. Bartolomeu dos Mártires lived in a time of crisis in the Church in the sixteenth century. His actions during the Council of Trento were so exciting that he caused the admiration of all the conciliatory priests and the Pope himself. His speeches defending a time of renewal were well-known, and many decrees of the reform were due to them. At the final stage of his life, Bartolomeu dos Mártires left for the Convent of Santa Cruz, in the town of Viana do Castelo. In that place, today's Church of São Domingos, he expanded his passionate charity towards the poor, who already regarded him as a saint. In the heart of the people it became known as the "Archbishop saint, the father of the poor and the infirm". It is in the Church of São Domingos that, by his will, he has been buried since the date of his death: July 16th, 1590.

eneficiada pelo seu porto de mar, Viana do Castelo assiste no século XVI a uma expansão urbana impulsionada pelos Descobrimentos. Na realidade, à medida que o comércio marítimo do porto de Viana crescia, a sociedade vianense foi também ela crescendo e enriquecendo, dando origem a um grupo de poderosos e ricos mercadores. Estes homens ocuparam as artérias principais da vila, construindo então casas opulentas, que através dos programas decorativos exteriores demonstravam o poder económico e o estatuto social dos seus habitantes.

A Casa dos Costa Barros, situada numa das ruas mais antigas de Viana, é um exemplar único desse estilo de arquitetura, que homenageia os Descobrimentos portugueses.

Construída no século XVI, esta casa pertence à família desde 1765, estando atualmente adaptada a Turismo Habitação.

Na Rua de São Pedro, procure a porta número 28 ou pergunte simplesmente pela “Casa da Janela Manuelina”.

Mais adiante, junto à Sé, chama a atenção a beleza de uma outra casa manuelina, mais simples, mas com uma particularidade: as duas sacadas e as duas janelas são diferentes dos seus pares.

A opulência do Palácio dos Abreu Távora, onde funciona a Câmara Municipal de Viana do Castelo, é uma das mais belas casas senhoriais da cidade, onde se destacam as janelas e portas manuelinas.

Mas, a mais antiga casa senhorial de Viana fica na Avenida Conde Carreira, em pleno centro histórico. O Solar Melo Alvim foi construído, em 1509, ao estilo manuelino e, hoje, transformado num hotel temático, mantém a traça arquitetónica portuguesa.

It is difficult to resist the enchantment of the city of Viana do Castelo, when light creates shadows on the shells, strings, corals, leaves, animals, imaginary and exotic beings, coming out of the epopea of the great seas, which covers windows, doors, arrows, columns and rosaceas of many of the city's historical buildings. We're talking about manueline buildings, built in the reign of D. Manuel I (1491-1521), under the peak of the Portuguese maritime expansion.

Benefiting from its seaport, Viana do Castelo witnessed an urban expansion driven by the Discoveries in the sixteenth century. In fact, as the maritime trade in the port of Viana grew, the Vianense society was also growing and becoming richer, giving rise to a group of powerful and rich merchants. These men occupied the main arteries of the village and then built opulent houses, which, through the external decorative programs, demonstrated the economic power and social status of their inhabitants.

The Casa dos Costa Barros (Costa Barros´s house), located on one of the oldest streets of Viana, is a unique example of this style of architecture, which pays homage to the Portuguese discoveries. Built in the sixteenth century, this house has been owned by the family since 1765 and is now adapted to Housing Tourism. On St. Peter's Street, look for door number 28 or just ask for “Casa da Janela Manuelina”, the (House of the Manuelin Window).

Further on, along the Sé, calls attention by its beauty, another manualine house, more simple and modest, but with peculiarity: the two balconies and the two windows are different from their pairs.

The opulence of the Abreu Távora Palace, where the Viana do Castelo Municipal Chamber works, is one of the most beautiful seigniorial houses in the city, where the windows and doors of the manualine architecture stands out.

But Viana's oldest seigniorial home is on Avenida Conde Carreira (Count Carreira Avenue), in the middle of a historical center. In 1509, Solar Melo Alvim was constructed in a manualine style and today transformed into a thematic hotel, maintaining the Portuguese architectural trait.

The iconic building of Viana do Castelo, known as ‘Viana Castle’ is a model of military architecture, shaken, located in the west and four meters above sea level. Its construction is due to the importance that Viana assumed, in the middle of the 15th century, as one of the major Portuguese seaports, which had commercial contacts with Galicia, Flanders and France.

In the period of the Discoveries, Viana saw high economic growth, which led to an increase in the population and to an extension of its urban perimeter. The defensive capacity of medieval walls has become insufficient, and D. Manuel ordered in1502 to build a small, shaken fortress, to be called the Roquette Tower. This tower is thought to have been a prototype for the construction of the Belém tower in Lisbon.

At the end of the sixteenth century, the fortress was the target of successive improvements, and was already under Spanish domination, during the reign of Philip II (Philip I of Portugal), who built the current fortress of a polygonal plant. The project was written by Filippo de Terzi, the most famous designer of military buildings at that time.

The Forte is open to the public, so a visit, or rather a journey in time, is proposed. The entrance is made by a wide bridge over the gap surrounding it. In the interior, you can see in the background the main building, and in the north the Capela da Santiago, the frontier of the country. Integrated in the southwest of the fortress, it is possible to appreciate the Tower of Roqueta, with the entrance of the Adarve, through a ramp. Flanked externally with four small towers and surrounded by a small ditch, the Roquette has a rectangular body with two records, a terrace with the birds and the weapons of King D. difício icónico de Viana do Castelo, o Forte de Santiago da Barra, também conhecido como "Castelo de Viana" é um exemplar de arquitetura militar, abaluartado, situado na zona oeste e a quatro metros acima do nível do mar. A sua construção deve-se à importância que Viana assumiu, em meados do século XV, como um dos grandes portos marítimos portugueses, que mantinha contactos comerciais com a Galiza, Flandres e França.

No período dos Descobrimentos, Viana assistiu a um elevado crescimento económico, que levou ao aumento da população e ao alargamento do seu perímetro urbano. Ora, a capacidade defensiva das muralhas medievais tornou-se insuficiente, pelo que D. Manuel mandou construir, cerca de 1502, uma pequena fortaleza abaluartada, que passaria a ser designada como “Torre da Roqueta”. Julga-se que esta torre terá sido um protótipo para a edificação da Torre de Belém, em Lisboa.

Nos finais do século XVI, a fortaleza foi alvo de sucessivas obras de beneficiação, tendo sido já sob a dominação espanhola, durante o reinado de Filipe II (Filipe I de Portugal), que foi edificada a atual fortaleza de planta poligonal. O projeto é da autoria de Filippo de Terzi, o mais famoso projetista de edificações militares dessa época.

O Forte está aberto ao público, pelo que se propõe uma visita, ou melhor, uma viagem no tempo. A entrada faz-se por uma ponte larga sobre o fosso que a circunda. No interior, pode ver-se ao fundo o edifício principal, e a norte a Capela da Santiago, fronteira ao paiol. Integrada na zona sudoeste da fortaleza, é possível apreciar a Torre da Roqueta, com entrada pelo adarve, através de uma rampa. Flanqueada exteriormente com quatro pequenas torres e rodeada por um pequeno fosso, a Roqueta possui corpo retangular com dois registos, um terraço com adarves e as armas do rei D. Manuel esculpidas na fachada.

ÀS QUARTAS-FEIRAS À TARDE, ABRE-SE AOS VISITANTES, NA FREGUESIA DE CARREÇO, A OITO QUILÓMETROS A NORTE DA CIDADE DE VIANA DO CASTELO. The FarolMontedor is the northest in Portugal and has the same years as the Republic in the country. On Wednesday afternoon, visitors are welcommed in the Carreço parish, eight kilometers north of the town of Viana do Castelo.

The entrance to the headlamp is free, but implies a snail climb of 115 steps of stone and 14 of iron. Once their breath has been restored, it is the turn of their eyes to glimpse themselves with a sovereign coastal landscape, shredded between beaches, fields and mountains.

For 37 years now, Nogueira da Silva, has had his habitual residence on the headlights. He explains in detail the story stored in that square tower, 28 meters high and 103 meters above sea level. It is with a radiant look and a torn smile, specific to those who love what he does, that Chief Nogueira da Silva opens the doors of the Farol, whose light, initially fed to the oil; went into oil operation in 1936; and electricity, since 1947.

Besides a living museum, the Montedor Lighthouse is still the guarantor of safe navigation.

At the top, his giant lamp projects two flashes every nine and a half seconds, crossing with the light from the Cies Lighthouse, in the river Vigo, and with the Lighthouse of the Douro river, in Porto. With a range of 22 nautical miles, equivalent to 40 kilometers, this is the light that gives identity to the Montedor Headlamp, but it is also the light of the eyes of Chief Nogueira da Silva, who regards each visit with esteem and as a unique opportunity for sharing knowledge and coexistence.

Há 37 anos que o faroleiro-chefe Nogueira da Silva, tem nos faróis a sua residência habitual. Em Viana do Castelo, e no rés-do-chão do edifício, explica com pormenor a história guardada naquela torre quadrangular, com uma altura de 28 metros e uma altitude de 103 metros acima do nível do mar. É com um olhar radioso e um sorriso rasgado, próprios de quem ama o que faz, que o chefe Nogueira da Silva abre as portas do Farol, cuja luz, inicialmente alimentada a azeite; passou a funcionar a petróleo, em 1936; e a energia elétrica, desde 1947.

Além de um museu vivo, o Farol de Montedor ainda é o garante de uma navegação segura. No topo, a sua lâmpada gigante projeta dois flashes a cada nove segundos e meio, cruzando com a luz do Farol das Ilhas Cies, na ria de Vigo, e com o Farol da barra do rio Douro, no Porto. Com um alcance de 22 milhas náuticas, equivalentes a quarenta quilómetros, esta é a luz que confere a identidade ao Farol de Montedor, mas é também a luz dos olhos do chefe Nogueira da Silva, que encara cada visita com estima e como uma oportunidade única de partilha de conhecimento e de convivência.

The Serra fits into the municipality of Viana do Castelo, but also into the neighboring territories of Caminha and Ponte de Lima, where its mountain range of granite origin covers a total area of around 4,500 hectares. There are over nine kilometers in length and five kilometers in width, a valuable natural heritage is being guarded, which includes more than 500 species of plants, including 32 rare or threatened by extinction; around 200 species of wild animals, such as the wolf and the Portuguese salamander; and a high wealth of property, with more than 600 copies, between churches, cruises, almates, wooden bridges, mills and fontanariums. Trata-se de um verdadeiro “museu ao ar livre”.

Ao longo do caminho até ao Santuário da Senhora do Minho, a tentação de parar é constante. Seja para beber nas muitas quedas de água que rasgam a serra, seja para fotografar a soberba paisagem que se avista do cimo ou, simplesmente, para contemplar uma natureza que nos circunda e que permanece pura.

Para os mais aventureiros, as três cascatas da serra estão classificadas como imperdíveis e das mais bonitas de Portugal, às quais se juntam as sete lagoas, um dos segredos mais bem guardados da localidade e que merecem uma visita demorada. O percurso pedonal até lá chegar inclui alguns desníveis acentuados e zonas onde é necessário atravessar rios e saltar de pedra em pedra.

abeça fina e grande, pescoço curto e bem musculado, garupa larga e membros pequenos, pelagem castanho-escura, crina e cauda pretas, compridas e muito densas. Assim são os garranos que habitam no alto de Portugal, num estado selvagem ou semisselvagem.

Este pequeno, mas robusto, cavalo vive num ecossistema de montanha, lado a lado com o seu único predador: o lobo.

De origem milenar, a adaptação do garrano ao habitat de montanha conferiu-lhe uma especial aptidão enquanto animal de transporte de pessoas e mercadorias em relevos íngremes, como são as serras e as montanhas; assim como uma ajuda preciosa no trabalho do campo, graças à exploração da sua robustez e resistência física.

Hoje, com um efetivo muito reduzido, o garrano é uma raça protegida, devido ao seu risco de extinção. Estima-se que em Viana do Castelo vivam cerca de 300 garranos, distribuídos pelas Serras d'Arga e de Santa Luzia. A pensar na sua preservação e valorização, Viana do Castelo oferece três percursos de fruição pedestre e equestre, tendo como protagonista o garrano. Com o mar à vista, ao longo do rio ou serra acima, a oportunidade é única para contactar com o famoso cavalo das montanhas.

There are those who call it a wild horse and there are those who confuse it with a pony... A native of the Iberian Peninsula, the garrano lives free and protected in the mountains of Arga and Santa Luzia in the municipality of Viana do Castelo.

Thin, with a large head, short, well-muscular neck and small limbs, dark brown fur, black horn and with a long and very dense tail. This is how the garranos live in the upper part of Portugal, in a wild or semi-wild state. This little but robust horse lives in a mountain ecosystem, side by side with its only predator: the wolf.

The adaptation of the claw to the mountain habitat has given it a special skill as a transport animal for people and goods in steep relief, such as mountains; as well as valuable help in the field's work, thanks to the exploitation of its strength and physical resistance.

Today, with a very small herd, the garrano is a protected breed, due to its risk of extinction. It is estimated that in Viana do Castelo there are about 300 garranos living, distributed by the Serra de Arga and Santa Luzia. Thinking of its preservation and appreciation, Viana do Castelo offers three routes of pedestrian and equestrian fruition where the garrano is the protagonist. With the sea in sight, along the river or mountains above, the opportunity is unique to contact the famous horse of the mountains.

ntes de sair da cidade para explorar o património natural, ou depois de regressar do périplo pela serra, é recomendada a visita ao Centro de Monitorização e Interpretação Ambiental (CMIA). Trata-se de um centro de informação e formação, que desenvolve toda uma atividade pedagógica de apelo à conservação da natureza. Instalado nas antigas Azenhas de D. Prior, é possível observar no seu interior o engenho original de moagem, agora reabilitado e preservado.

O CMIA abre-se sobre o Parque Ecológico Urbano de Viana do Castelo, uma área de aproximadamente 20 hectares, localizada a nascente do centro histórico e da Ponte Eifell. Ao entrarmos, desligamos do alvoroço e ficamos com a sensação de estarmos entrelaçados com a natureza.

Ei-los que partem às primeiras horas do dia. Ainda sem raios de sol, zarpam pelo rio ou pelo mar, deixando ao longe a silhueta de uma cidade a dormir.

Durante várias gerações, a pesca foi o sustento e o modo de vida tradicional para muitas famílias de Viana do Castelo. Com o tempo, o número de pescadores locais diminuiu e, hoje, são três as comunidades piscatórias que ainda sobrevivem: Castelo de Neiva, Ribeira e Darque.

Let's go to the first hours of the day. Still without sunshine, they sail down the river or the sea, leaving the silhouette of a sleeping city far away. For several generations, fishing was the livelihood and traditional way of life for many families from Viana do Castelo. With time, the number of local fishermen has decreased and today there are three fishing communities that still survive: Castle of Neiva, Ribeira and Darque.

The sea is part of the daily life of the Viana´s Stream. At the gates of the city, dozens of fishermen throw themselves every morning into the cold waters of the Atlantic. They know the coast like the palmo f their hands, and, according to Jorge Souto and Bruno, the worst is really "at the exit from the bar". To overcome this obstacle, everything else is done with respect for the sea.

Robalo, sargo, sole, faneca, sardines, santola, lavender, sailor, shoe-maker and shrimp are the assets offered by the Viana Sea to whoever sails seven days a week in it. The day was still beginning, but for Jorge and Bruno it was already vatigued as "weak." They left at 6:30 to collect the nets they left the day before, but they got a little over 10 kilos of fish. "Little, for a winter day" - they guarantee.

Jorge has been a fisherman since he was 15 years of age, while Bruno, 33 years old, experimented with other activities on land, but he guarantees that the son of a fisherman knows how to fish and that the sea has always been present in himself and is no longer seen outside the waters of Viana.

MAR ADENTRO, RIO ACIMA

mar faz parte do quotidiano da Ribeira de Viana. Às portas da cidade, dezenas de pescadores lançam-se todas as madrugadas nas águas frias do Atlântico.

Conhecem a costa a palmo e, segundo Jorge Souto e Bruno, o pior é mesmo “à saída da barra”. Contornado este obstáculo, tudo o resto se faz com o respeito devido ao mar.

Robalo, sargo, linguado, faneca, sardinha, santola, lavagante, navalheira, sapateira e camarão, são os trunfos que o mar de Viana oferece a quem nele navega sete dias por semana. O dia ainda estava a começar, mas para Jorge e Bruno já estava vaticinado como “fraco”. Saíram às 6h30 para recolher as redes que deixaram no dia anterior, mas apenas conseguiram cerca de dez quilos de peixe. “Pouco, para um dia de inverno” - garantem.

Jorge é pescador desde os 15 anos de idade, enquanto Bruno, com 33 anos, ainda experimentou outras atividades em terra, mas garante que filho de pescador sabe pescar e “o bichinho do mar” sempre teve presente em si e já não se revê fora das águas de Viana.

ais à frente, na freguesia de Darque, o sol faz as água do rio Lima rebrilharem como um espelho de prata. Na margem, Miguel transpõe para terra as lampreias capturadas. Desta feita, a viagem foi compensatória, mas é sempre incerta: “Ontem, os que foram entre a uma e as seis da madrugada, apanharam duas lampreias; entre as 17 e as 23 horas, já conseguiram 18”.

Nos meses compreendidos entre janeiro e maio, altura em que a lampreia entra no rio na direção da nascente, para cumprir a fase de reprodução; esta espécie é a salvaguarda dos pescadores de Darque. Nos restantes meses do ano, as mesmas embarcações artesanais chegam a terra com solhas, berbigão, amêijoas, caranguejos e outros. À primeira aparência, o rio parece mais tranquilo que o mar. Mas, para os pescadores, ambos estão envoltos num respeito, que só a natureza sabe merecer!

ove horas da manhã. Em Castelo de Neiva, José Couto acaba de regressar do mar. Partiu há sete horas atrás, tendo percorrido uma extensão de seis quilómetros para deixar no mar os covos. Regressará no dia seguinte, para contar quantos polvos capturaram as suas armadilhas.

Com 64 anos, este pescador diz que “nasceu no mar” e, talvez por isso, não trocaria a atividade por nenhuma outra.

Filho de pescador, é um dos sobreviventes da pesca em Castelo de Neiva. Atualmente, são pouco mais de três dezenas, mas no passado “éramos muitos mais”, diz José Couto, com um orgulho nostálgico.

Sentado na proa do barco, ladeado por muitos outros, batizados com menções religiosas: “Filho de Deus”, “Maria da Fé”, “N. Sra.ª da Aparecida”, José conta que foram muitos os pescadores que perderam a vida, a poucos quilómetros dali.

Carlos Ferreira, better known as "Fitas” (Tapes) is the last manufacturer of fishing boats made by hand. Master Fitas has already lost count of the number of trawlers and boats of the river that he built with the strength of his arms and the art of his hands. In the parish of Darque, it transposes its days into a small artisanal shipyard, with the neighboring river 365 days a year.

He had not yet reached the age of 12 when he learned the art of the carpentry shop in Viana do Castelo. At the time, more because of need than wanting. These are small wooden boats made by hand by Carlos and Miguel, the son who followed the art.

Besides the construction, he gained a taste for the assembly, and today he is proud to be the mentor and the author of the boat from his project until he enters the water.

From inside the shipyard, Miguel can identify on the left bank of the Lima river the vessels that have his signature. Signature of hands, not name, because names are conferred by owners. Miguel also recalls the first boat he built: "God will wait for you", as well as the biggest one he set up, with 16.5 meters: "Lord of the Good Way." arlos Ferreira, mais conhecido por “Fitas” é o último construtor de barcos de pesca à mão. O Mestre Fitas já perdeu a conta ao número de traineiras e de barcas do rio, que construiu com a força dos seus braços e a arte das suas mãos. Na freguesia de Darque, transpõe os dias num pequeno estaleiro artesanal, com o rio vizinho 365 dias por ano.

Ainda não tinha completado 12 anos quando aprendeu a arte da carpintaria naval, em Viana do Castelo. Na altura, mais por necessidade do que por saber. Mais tarde, dedica-se por sua conta à construção das barcas do rio Lima, que ainda hoje resistem com o seu timbre. Trata-se de pequenos barcos de pesca de madeira feitos à mão por Carlos e Miguel, o filho que deu seguimento à arte.

Miguel começou na pesca, mas com 16 anos “ambicionava o dinheiro” e decidiu agarrar o testemunho do pai. Além da construção, ganhou gosto pela montagem e, hoje, orgulha-se de ser o mentor e o autor do barco desde o seu projeto até ele entrar na água.

Do interior do estaleiro, Miguel consegue identificar na margem esquerda do rio Lima os barcos que têm a sua assinatura. Assinatura de mãos, não de nome, pois os nomes são conferidos pelos proprietários. Miguel ainda recorda o do primeiro barco que construiu: “Deus te espero”, assim como do maior que armou, com 16,5 metros: “Senhor do Bom Caminho”.

Um barco que saia das mãos dos Fitas é uma verdadeira obra de arte, mas com efeito prático, assim que entrar nas águas frias do mar ou do rio!

ntónio Viana lida com a cozinha desde os oito anos de idade. Hoje, aos 64 anos é ele quem, de avental ao peito e no meio da cozinha, dá as boas-vindas na Taberna do Valentim. O nome com que batizou a casa vem do avô da mulher, também ela com raízes numa tasca típica de Viana do Castelo.

A Taberna do Valentim é um clássico da capital do Alto Minho, onde o peixe é respeitado e tratado de forma simples e natural. O segredo, segundo António Viana, está nos produtos naturais e frescos, que todos os dias faz questão de ir comprar. Mas, bastam alguns dedos de conversa com o rosto da Taberna do Valentim para perceber que a verdadeira pitada está no amor que o Sr. António dedica à cozinha.

“Faço o que gosto!”. É assim que António Viana, de sorriso no rosto e brilho nos olhos, define a sua arte. E nós comprovámos. O arroz e a caldeirada de peixe, com tamboril, raia, congro e cherne ou corvina, são as especialidades imperdíveis da casa. A estas juntam-se as pataniscas de bacalhau, as petingas fritas e a sopa de peixe. Para grelhar, há sempre peixe do dia, como robalo, linguado, rodovalho, polvo e salmonetes, quando o mar assim o permite.

a típica Ribeira de Viana do Castelo, a Casa Primavera ou Taberna do Soares é uma verdadeira instituição popular. A Casa de Pasto nasceu em 1948, mas é desde 2003 que ganha a fama nas mãos da família Soares: as duas filhas garantem o serviço de mesa, enquanto pai e mãe dedicam-se à cozinha.

O espaço é simples e a cozinha descomplicada. Sobre as mesas de madeira, que os clientes têm de partilhar, desfilam os sabores do mar, sempre sujeitos aos caprichos das marés e à abundância das estações. Petiscos, mariscos e peixe fresco são uma presença constante na ementa. O misto frito de peixes – cujas espécies dependem do arbítrio do mar - e o robalo, o sargo ou o polvo assados na brasa, são as propostas para os almoços. Em alternativa, a carne também integra a ementa, com o naco de picanha a liderar as sugestões da cozinheira. A partir das 17 horas, a taberna dedica-se aos petiscos, com oferta de mexilhões, navalheiras, vieiras recheadas, ovas, búzios, camarões da costa e percebes. A bebida é servida gelada, como manda a tradição, e numa grande tigela de barro, da qual todos se servem. ma antiga escola primária de Viana do Castelo foi transformada num museu dedicado ao pão, com alfaias agrícolas e um forno de lenha que fazem voltar atrás no tempo.

Na localidade de Outeiro, o convite é para uma descoberta didática e lúdica do ciclo do pão, desde o cultivo do cereal na terra, passando pela moagem, até à cozedura. Aliás, perto do museu, é ainda possível visitar a Azenha do Maral, um verdadeiro engenho onde era moído o grão, através da fricção do cereal entre duas mós, que assim o desfaziam e transformavam em farinha. A mesma farinha da qual se faz o pão, ou melhor, a broa de milho que, no Museu, é amassada e cozida ainda à moda antiga. A visita, que deve ser marcada com antecedência, termina com a prova da broa tradicional portuguesa, acompanhada do mel produzido nas encostas daquelas serras.

Its geographical coverage, with scenarios as diverse as mountain, beach and river, has attracted national and international cinematographic and audiovisual productions that take advantage of long hours of sunlight in the summer, with a sky painted with intense blue, a river marked by silver and a sunset signed in golden tones.

In order to respond to the growing number of film productions in the municipality, and to facilitate and speed up all the related processes, the City Council of Viana do Castelo created a Film Commission in 2018 called VianaFilm.

isitar Viana, em agosto, por altura das Festas da Agonia, e sentir o pulsar de uma terra e a alegria e o orgulho de um povo é uma experiência que dificilmente se descreve, pois tem de ser vivida no local.

Desde os Cabeçudos e Gigantones, que de rostos despojados, balançam pela cidade ao som dos Zés P’reiras; à riqueza das mordomas, que desfilam com o traje à vianesa e com o peito abrilhantado pelo ouro tecido em filigrana; são muitos os momentos das Festas que espelham a alma do Minho na sua plenitude.

Uma festa que se iniciou com a devoção dos pescadores à sua padroeira, e que eles fazem questão de homenagear na Procissão ao Mar, transportando a figura da Senhora da Agonia numa embarcação pelo rio Lima adentro. Um momento carregado de muita emoção por quem segue nos barcos e por quem se apinha nas margens. É este misto de tradição genuína e de animação popular que, espontaneamente, nos exalta e eleva a paixão por Viana.

Besides a city that combines history with modernity, the sea with the river and the mountain, Viana do Castelo has an economy to vibrate.

It has the proximity to the airports of Porto and Vigo, the existence of a seaport; the remarkable quality of life, both through safety and tranquility in the city and through excellent cultural, social and sporting facilities; these are trump cards that Viana do Castelo has been able to take advantage of.

The Council's business activity represents a turnover of EUR 2,8 billion, with an increase in activity of 13 per center in the period 2013-2017. Viana is also experiencing a dramatic growth in exports and global business investment, which in the period 2009-2018 was over EUR 1 billion, with a strong intensity over the last two years, reaching EUR 320 million.

The proactive role of the municipality has been crucial in this area, with the result that it offers conditions of excellence for setting up companies and talent. The assets already presented are added to the physical conditions of the industrial and infrastructure lots available to the Council; business incubators and accelerators; the tax incentives granted by the Chamber and the speed of business start-up and growth responses; as well as the assistance provided by the municipality in the acquisition of labor, through connections to the universities of Porto, Minho, Vigo, Aveiro and the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo itself.

The automobile, paper, metallomechanics and metallurgy sectors, the sea economy, information services and technologies are the sectors that contribute most to job creation in Viana do Castelo and that have attracted more resources and talent.

Viana is good at investing and is good at working, having won the "Best Municipality to Live" award in the Economics category in 2018, the award for "Best Municipality to Live" in the Economics category, awarded by the Institute of Behavioral Technology.

O parque eólico flutuante ao largo de Viana do Castelo é um dos exemplos do pulsar da economia de Viana. Trata-se da primeira central eólica offshore da Europa continental e um dos maiores parques de energia eólica flutuante do mundo. Com o recorde de ter três das maiores turbinas eólicas assentes em plataformas marítimas flutuantes, a capacidade total instalada do parque é de 25 MW, o equivalente à energia consumida por 60 mil utilizadores durante um ano.

O projeto, que tem merecido destaque mundial, é da Windfloat Atlantic e está avaliado em 125 milhões de euros.

The floating wind farm of Viana do Castelo is one of the many examples of the pulsar of Viana's economy. It is the first offshore wind power plant in the continent of Europe and one of the largest floating wind farms in the world. With the record of having three of the largest wind turbines based on floating maritime platforms, the total installed capacity of the park is 25 MW, the equivalent of the energy consumed by 60 thousand users over a year.

The project, which has been highlighted worldwide, is from Windfloat Atlantic and is estimated at EUR 125 million.

iana do Castelo, uma das cidades mais bonitas de Portugal, tem uma forte ligação ao mar, não só através da pesca, mas também de todas as atividades turísticas que a cidade foi desenvolvendo ao longo dos anos, como o surf, o kitesurf ou o windsurf. Também no Rio Lima podemos praticar vela ou canoagem.

O mar está sempre presente em Viana do Castelo, a 20 de agosto de cada ano a Senhora da Agonia sai para abençoar o mar e quem dele vive, numa das festas mais ricas de Portugal. Mas a cidade tem muito mais para oferecer, desde o artesanato, que também ele se foi aprimorando ao longo dos tempos, e neste momento já concilia o tradicional com peças mais diversificadas, passando pela filigrana, que também já pode ser encontrada em diferentes materiais.

Também do ponto de vista arquitetónico, muitos são os nomes que deixaram a sua marca em Viana do Castelo. A começar por Souto Moura que desenhou o Centro Cultural da cidade e onde realizámos o nosso Congresso, mas há outras obras emblemáticas como: a Praça da Liberdade de Fernando Távora, a Biblioteca de Álvaro Siza Vieira, a Pousada da Juventude de Carrilho da Graça ou o Axis Viana da autoria de Jorge Albuquerque.

Naturalmente que não podemos ir a Viana sem visitar o Navio Gil Eannes. Com uma longa história que vale a pena conhecer durante uma visita, este navio-hospital, construído nos Estaleiros de Viana do Castelo, foi fundamental no apoio à pesca do bacalhau nos bancos da Terra Nova.

Do ponto de vista económico, é interessante perceber a dinâmica impressa pela Câmara Municipal para atrair investimento para o concelho. Em 2018, Viana do Castelo, segundo o seu Presidente, representava 2,6% do volume de negócios da região Norte; 50,1% do Alto Minho, estando esse volume distribuído da seguinte forma: 46% pela indústria e 30% pelo comércio e serviços. É impressionante! É também surpreendente perceber que Viana do Castelo tem registado um crescimento económico duas vezes superior ao da própria região Norte e é o 16º município mais exportador do país, representando 1,5% das exportações portuguesas.

Nos últimos 6 anos, o turismo na região Porto e Norte cresceu fortemente, bem acima da média nacional. Cresceu em hóspedes; em receitas; e em estabelecimentos hoteleiros. Regressar ao Norte do país era uma grande vontade.

Todavia, quando, no início de 2019, a AHP escolheu Viana do Castelo para realizar o 31º Congresso Nacional da Hotelaria e Turismo estava muito longe de imaginar o que iria encontrar.

Posso, por isso, dizer que descobri(mos) Viana aquando da realização do Congresso. Quando cheguei pude ver uma hotelaria muito bem representada, investidores com os olhos postos no concelho e um conjunto de projetos hoteleiros e turísticos em pipeline.

Por tudo isto e muito mais, digo que valeu (vale!) mesmo a pena ir a Viana…

Viana do Castelo, one of Portugal's most beautiful cities, has a strong link to the sea, not only through fishing, but also through all the tourist activities that the city has been developing over the years, such as surf, kitesurf or windsurf. Plus, in the Lima River we can practice sailing or canoeing.

The sea is always present in Viana do Castelo. On August 20th of each year the Lady of the Agonia leaves to bless the sea and who lives in it, at one of the richest parties in Portugal. But the city has much more to offer, since the crafts, that it has also been perfected over the course of time, and at this moment it is now reconciling the traditional with more diversified and modern pieces, passing through the filigree, which can also be found in different materials.

Also, from the architectural point of view, there are many names that left their mark in Viana do Castelo. Beginning with Souto Moura, who designed the Cultural Center of the city and where we held our Congress. However, there are other emblematic workers such as: Fernando Távora's Liberty Square, the Library of Álvaro Siza Vieira, the Carrilho da Graça Youth Pousada or the Axis Viana by Jorge Albuquerque.

Naturally, we cannot go to Viana without visiting the ship Gil Eannes. With a long history worth knowing during a visit, this hospital vessel, built in the Estaleiros de Viana do Castelo, was crucial in supporting cod fishing in the Newfoundland banks. From the economic point of view, it is interesting to perceive the dynamics printed by the Municipal Chamber to attract investment to the municipality. In 2018, Viana do Castelo, according to its Mayor, accounted for 2,6% of the turnover of the northern region; 50.1% of the High Minho, this volume being distributed as follows: 46% for industry and 30% for trade and services. It's amazing!

It is also surprising to see that Viana do Castelo has recorded twice as high economic growth as the northern region itself and is the 16th most exporting municipality in the country, accounting for 1.5% of Portuguese exports.

In the last six years, tourism in the Oporto and in the northern regions has grown strongly, well above the national average. Grew up invisitors; revenues; and in hotels. However, when, in early 2019, AHP chose Viana do Castelo to hold the 31st National Hotels and Tourism Congress, it was far from imagining what it would find.

I can therefore say that I discovered Viana during the congress. When I arrived, I saw a very well-represented hotel shop, investors with eyes on the council and a number of hotel and tourist projects in pipelines.

For all this and much more, I say that it was (worth it) even worth going to Viana...

Em Viana do Castelo conseguimos sentir todas as estações do ano! Todos os nossos sentidos se exaltam com os seus sons, as suas cores, os seus aromas, as suas texturas e os seus sabores. Esta marítima cidade portuguesa, capital do Alto Minho faz-nos gostar do Outono, do Inverno, da Primavera e do Verão.

Como todos os lugares extraordinários Viana é uma cidade de detalhes que, como quando contemplamos os ínfimos pormenores de uma jóia de filigrana, todos juntos, nos preenchem com a sua harmoniosa beleza.

Ouvir a chuva por detrás dos vidros de uma janela, com as mãos pousadas na mesa a sentir a textura de uma toalha de linho, saboreando uma Torta de Viana ou outro dos maravilhosos doces desta cidade, numa sala decorada de forma multicolorida e cheia do aroma do café, quentinho, acabado de fazer, é uma das delícias de Viana, no Outono. Quando a chuva acalma, é hora de passear nas ruas da cidade e sentir o cheiro da natureza, que a chuva enfatiza como ninguém! É muito possível que se encontre uma neblina ou, caso o sol espreite, nasça um belíssimo arco-íris alertando-nos para o facto de estarmos num local mágico!

O cheiro de lareiras acesas acompanha os passeios de fim de dia, início de noite, no casco antigo da cidade, no Inverno, onde o brilho das luzes das lojas ganha uma outra dimensão com o colorido das decorações de Natal e respetivos presentes. Esta é a melhor altura do ano para saborear um bom prato de bacalhau à moda do Minho, que nos recorda o empenho de toda uma cidade na construção de navios, treino de marítimos e arrojo das pessoas que decidiram, durante séculos, soltar amarras à procura de encontrar, nas águas agitadas do Atlântico Norte, o sustento para a sua comunidade cos-

Os sons desta época do ano são variados, desde a sirene marítima que chama as embarcações para se recolherem no porto de abrigo antes da chegada das tempestades de Inverno, até aos sinos que ecoam nas ruas, convocando as pessoas que caminham, aconchegadas nas suas fazendas e lãs, para as celebrações natalícias, bem como os sons de ferrinhos, tambores, reco-recos, concertinas, violas, gaitas de foles que, como verdadeiras orquestras populares, inundam a cidade de músicas de janeiras.

O chilrear dos pássaros e o esvoaçar das andorinhas entre telhados marcam a chegada da Primavera e, tal como acontece com as cores das flores nos jardins da cidade, no rio, as cores dos caíques, dos remos e dos barcos à vela realçam a vivacidade desta estação do ano. Da mesma forma, no mar, os amarelos, os rosas, os verdes, os vermelhos e os azuis florescentes das licras de surfistas, bodibordistas e dos kitesurfistas ondulam sem parar, flutuando num contínuo vai-e-vem, sentindo a água, nas vagas das praias de Viana.

Nesta estação do ano, nada melhor do que um saboroso pequeno almoço, nos muitos locais panorâmicos da cidade para sentir a energia positiva do nascer do dia, na Foz do Rio Lima, contemplando a cidade, o monte, o rio e o mar. Durante o dia as opções de atividades outdoor na água ou em terra são muitas, o difícil é escolher. O monte de Santa Luzia chama para uma boa caminhada por entre árvores e cavalos selvagens e Viana do Castelo transforma-se. As pastelarias competem entre si pelo melhor doce, as capelas abrem as suas portas à cidade e o compasso pascal anuncia, com alegria, um novo começo…

Com espetaculares miradouros, a encosta virada a sul e a sudoeste do Monte de Santa Luzia parece um magnífico anfiteatro natural que desce em direção ao rio e ao mar envolvendo toda a cidade de Viana do Castelo. Sem dúvida que o palco maior deste anfiteatro é feito de água, doce e salgada. Todos os atores que se podem encontrar nas atividades ribeirinhas existem nesta arena. Operários de construção naval, estivadores, pescadores, velejadores, canoístas, surfistas, remadores, investigadores, marinheiros… E a cidade, desde sempre, no Verão, de forma entusiasta reconhece e celebra esta singularidade identitária. Nas festas da Senhora da Agonia, este salão nobre, construído pela natureza e pelos Vianenses, enche-se.

Percorrendo desde o Palácio dos Cunhas até ao largo de S. Domingos, em desfile, as Mordomas envergam os seus coloridos trajes e o seu ouro, resultado do trabalho agrícola de muitas gerações, que a abundância de água transformou em riqueza. Grupos folclóricos, gaiteiros, concertinas, gigantones e bombos saúdam continuamente, ao longo de toda a romaria, a devoção das gentes ligadas à pesca, que celebram as graças recebidas em momentos difíceis durante as tempestades e os naufrágios. No palco central, que é o rio e o mar, acontece o momento alto da rainha das romarias de Portugal, a procissão marítima, com dezenas de engalanadas embarcações e milhares de fiéis assistindo nas margens.

Respeitando o seu passado, hoje em dia, Viana do Castelo, para além de manter todas as suas tradições ao longo do ano, tornando as visitas a esta cidade uma animada celebração, está a construir uma visão de futuro para os seus habitantes.
