GENERAL REPORT
The design of the three provincial Museums of Naseriyeh, Diwanija and Kufa has been guided by the principles considering museums a non profit, permanent institution in the service of society and of its development, open to the public, which acquires ,conserves, researches, communicates and exhibits, for purposes of study, education and enjoyment, the tangible and intangible evidence of people and their environment. According to these principles, all three existing museums have been integrated with new areas devoted to exhibition, research, restoration, communication and educational activities. These additional spaces have transformed each existing building into a “Museum Compound, whose design has followed two basic architectural roles, one related the relationship between functions according to the indications and suggestions of the Iraqi authorities and consultants , the other related to the layout. Thus on one hand the design takes into account tourist flow, educational activities and entertainment and technological installation as indicated, on the other it intends to stress the identity of the existing buildings in their own original shape. As a consequence all new buildings and functions are located very
close and yet not attached to the existing ones. The resulting layout is mapping both the functions and the relationship between themselves and it is flexible to an increase or decrease of the distance between the buildings, including the minimum distance which would transform the proposed open passageways into covered corridors, thus transforming the compound into one building only. Each museum’s proposal has been carried out from the Concept Design phase to the Design Development phase to include drawings and statements of probable construction costs. Construction documents such as working drawings and specifications are developed only for the two exhibitions halls of the Naseriyeh Museum, in view of the work on site that is going to start shortly. Based on the competent authorities supplied data and on the enquiry into the latest guidelines for the Museums restoration, all following proposals manifest the second stage of design including feedback from the confrontation with the Iraqi competent authorities on a first design stage.

Both existing buildings (A) and (B), corresponding to the exhibition and the laboratories units will be extended into area (2) and area (1) respectively. Both extensions are towards the boundaries of the museum area. The laboratory extension includes an artifacts warehouse. The new building for exhibitions (2) will be located between the reception hall and the new unit (3), which includes a library a cafeteria and a small office. The two buildings are connected by a courtyard. A visitors control point is positioned at the en-

Existing surface 2300 sqm Refurbishment 2300 sqm New building Building A Building B
GENERAL REPORT The exisiting archaeological museum of Naseriyeh was designed last century in the 70’s Within its surface of approximately 2.300 sqm it could house artifacts in its exhibition halls, beside those held in its storages. It has been used until the beginning of the first Gulf War. It was originally toured by approximately 1000 visitors. Thanks to the joint venture between Iraq and Italy and in collaboration with Iraqi architects a new refurbishment of the Museum has new been designed according to the requirements of the Iraqi archaeological department. The new proposed Museum coordinates present and new functions by integrating the existing building with extensions and two new additional buildings as described in the following paragraphs. Due to budget reasons, building works will be carried out in stages. The initial one of these willconcern a partial refurbishment of the existing building only. The overall surface will be 3.270 sqm with an increase of 970 sqm compared to the existing surface of 2.300 sqm.

The existing museum (1), consisting of one building only, is developed into a compound of three buildings, the main one being the original unit and the new ones being a facility for cultural uses -independent from the museum itself - and a laboratories unit. The main building consists of permanent exhibitions areas, with corridors for temporary exhibitions located in its two storey section, and of an administration area with custodian apartment in the one storey section. Between the two sections the entrance hall, with reception and bookshop. The facilities for cultural uses, in one of the two new buildings, is independent from the museum and include a conference hall, a library, a cafeteria and a small office (A). Laboratories and storages are in the second new building (B) that is linked to the main exhibition building by a protected path from which the conference hall and cafeteria building are accessed as well. All buildings will be connected by new external paving and new palm and orange trees will be planted in the garden. Car parks have been rationalized and increased to include three areas: one for visitors, one for the museum employees and one dedicated to the loading and unloading of archaeological finds.
