I, too, call Australia home

The theme for the January edition of the Chung Wah Magazine resonates with me. Having settled in Perth since migrating here a few years ago, I finally decided to become a citizen and started to take more interest in my adopted “home”. My family and I came from China, and like most Chinese people, were rather insistent in maintaining our traditional culture and living habits. At the same time, the spirit of democracy, freedom, and community in Australia appeals strongly to me. The Chinese people around me, in particular those from China, often failed to separate the distinction between heritage, country, and government. In my mind, heritage and culture are above state and government and their propaganda. Even though I have become a citizen of Australia, I and my future generations will forever be descendants of the dragon. I am extremely proud of my Chinese heritage, but this does not conflict with my appreciation of the Australian democracy, and my pledge to observe and respect its laws and systems. It is these laws and systems that protect the place I now call “home”.

As you know, they have to set up and put away the tables and chairs several times a week and this had become a daunting task on the very hot days we have experienced during the last couple of years. I would also like to pass on my thanks and appreciation to the men who did the installation. They always told us well in advance which area they would be working in so we could plan what we needed to do to ensure the safety of our staff and clients.

President Sammy Yap was invited as a special guest speaker at an all staff meeting on 13th February 2013 at Lotterywest. The theme of the speech was to give Lotterywest staff a good idea of how the grants administered by them, have benefitted the community, in particular, the Chinese community. President Yap talked about the recent 5 grants which the Chung Wah Association successfully applied for in the last 12 months. In particular, he talked about how the grant for the air-conditioning system at our Balcatta centre had significantly improved the safety and comfort of our seniors, how the heritage grant is helping us to conserve our heritage listed hall in James Street, and the community event grant which helped to make the 2013 Perth Chinese New Year Fair the great success it was. Immediate feedback from the staff, as well as their CEO, Jan Stewart, indicated how well our President’s speech was received, and how highly relevant it was. We were told subsequently that it became a talking point in their office after the meeting. 2

Many of you would have either spoken or dealt with Agnes Tseu, our Administration Officer, who has been with us for more than 20 years. Knowing Agnes, I am sure you would have all had a pleasant experience as she is such a helpful and obliging person. On 15 March 2013, Agnes has decided to retire to become a full time grandmother. Her eldest daughter will be giving birth to her first grandchild in late March, which she is eagerly looking forward to help and take care of both mother and child. Agnes has served 7 Presidents, and 14 Executive Committees, with passion and commitment. She often worked long and extra hours on a voluntary basis to enable events and activities of the Association to be carried out as scheduled. On behalf of all in Chung Wah, I would like to express my immense gratitude to Agnes for her dedication and loyalty to the Association all these years, and wish her all the very best in her retirement. Perth Chinatown Getting a Facelift …Finally! On Chinese New Year Eve on 9 February 2013, President Sammy Yap was invited by Premier Colin Barnett to join him at a media release concerning Chinatown. They walked the lane ways of Chinatown whilst discussing the various aspects that needed work, along with an entourage of media personnel including the 3 commercial TV stations, and the major newspapers. The media conference took place at the front of the renown Billy Lee Chinese restaurant, after which the Premier and our President stayed to toss the Prosperity Raw Fish Salad to usher in the Year of the Snake.

President Yap has been campaigning to both the state and local governments on improvements to Chinatown ever since he was elected to the position in April 2011. The announcement of the revitalisation of Chinatown is a fantastic outcome for the city of Perth and a major win for the Chinese community. Details of the media release:

New life for Chinatown and laneways On the eve of Chinese New Year, Premier Colin Barnett has announced a Liberal Government will transform and revitalise Northbridge’s Chinatown and create a more vibrant laneway precinct for businesses, families, and visitors.

The Premier said $2million would be provided to transform Chinatown and build on its rich history. “For more than a century, Chinatown and its laneways have been an important business and recreation area and, with the continuing transformation of Northbridge and the progress of the Perth City Link project, an opportunity has arisen for a significant investment in its future,” he said. “A Liberal Government will undertake improvements to the public areas and laneways which will act as a stimulus for the revitalisation of the area which has become one of Perth’s most important multicultural centres.

opposite Chinatown. “This will bring many pedestrians to the area and it will become an important entry point for a transforming and maturing Northbridge encouraging more families, visitors, and tourists to visit and celebrate what Chinatown has to offer.” The $2million will go towards improvements which will celebrate and enhance the unique character of Chinatown including:

“Chinatown and its laneways will become far more than just a thoroughfare, they will be an important entry statement to a maturing and evolving Northbridge which will encourage more shops, cafes and restaurants and ensure a safer, more vibrant and diverse community.

• improving the entry statement at Roe Street • an entry statement to highlight the James Street entry to the precinct • improvements to the Roe Street forecourt area – such as landscaping, seating, shade, and some greater colour and vibrancy • a tidy up of service and car parking areas and possibly new paving and lighting on the pedestrian walkways • public art, contemporary Chinese art, or wall murals.

“Chinatown is in a great position to benefit from the Perth City Link project. Two new street connections will be created – King Street will be extended through to connect to Lake Street, and Queen Street will extend through the Link project and come out right

Planning Minister John Day said successful city laneway upgrades by the City of Perth had beautified previously dark and underused spaces in the CBD and a similar approach will have a dramatic impact in Northbridge.

The 2013 Perth Chinese New Year Fair was again a huge success as evidenced by the mountain of positive feedback received from all over. This year’s event was bigger and better with 82 stalls, and a games and rides alley, and much much more. Below are some samples of feedback from a cross section of people:

REFLECTIONS “Yesterday event was great!! Everything run smoothly. Well done to you and your colleagues”. Zac Yusoff, Satay on Charcoal (stall holder) “It was just so inspiring to see the positive response to the second Chinese New year Fair - truly thrilling”. Ms Chris Hughes, International Relations Coordinator | Office of the Lord Mayor | City of Perth “Just wanted to pass on our congratulations on a wonderful day yesterday. I came down with my family in the early evening and was present for the opening concert. I can only imagine the massive amounts of hard work from your team to put this together. I know how stressful event planning can be, especially on such a big scale!! Well done on your efforts, I am truly thrilled for your organisation, to have pulled off such a successful event”. Chanteya Macphail, Founder & CEO, Project Jenny “I wish to congratulate you on a very successful conduct of the new year celeberation. The performances were of very high standard and the courtesy extended by volunteers was excellent”. Mahesh Singh, President, Indian Society of WA “Congratulations on a great festival yesterday. It was great fun and your community is really being very successful at weaving Chinese New Year into the Western Australian cultural life”. Hon. Alannah MacTiernan, Mayor, City of Vincent

Despite the increased level of difficulty and complexity due to the closure of two streets instead of one, this year’s event was an even greater success compared to last year because we took the trouble to selfassess, listen to feedback, and plan ahead to avoid repeating our mistakes from the past. This time round, it was no different when we met with City of Perth officials after this year’s event, and hold debriefing sessions with various stakeholders on how and where we can improve in future. By taking feedback seriously and being genuine in wanting to prevent repeated mistakes, it sets a great platform to deliver a better event next year.

“Thanks for making this year run so much smoother !! With more Marquees and everything else!” Matt, Swan Marquees and Party Hire “Although activities for celebrating the Chinese New Year have subsided, happy memories of the events remain; and the most notable must be the Chinese New Year Fair. I thoroughly enjoyed the joyful atmosphere of the Fair, not only as a spectator but also as a participant, made possible by the Chung Wah Association in allowing me to promote the art of Origami”. Heather Lee (stall holder) “Congratulations to you and all of your team organizing this year’s outstanding New Year’s event. The event was supported enthusiastically by your community as well as many Northbridge traders. There were significant numbers in Northbridge throughout the day which was an even greater result considering the oppressive weather on the day…... It was great to see the high level support you received from all tiers of Government with representatives from State Government Ministries and surrounding Local Government Authorities”. Perth is home to a growing Chinese community and each year Chinese New Year celebrations get bigger and better as they continue to grow in popularity with the entire community.

◎Lisa Scaffidi –

Northbridge has traditionally hosted the festivities and it is fantastic to see the number of people coming together to experience the excitement of Chinese New Year increase each year. The celebration is an opportunity to appreciate the wonderful Chinese culture and how it contributes to our City. On a larger scale is also a chance to recognise the strong and valid ties between China and Western Australia. Economically, it is undeniable how important and valuable Western Australia’s relationship with China is in the global economy, but the links between China and Northbridge extend much further back to the days of market gardening. Since that time the Chinese community has played a significant role in Northbridge and is an integral part of the areas identity. Today, Northbridge is a vibrant cultural hub that encourages the community to come together to experience all it has on offer. The City of Perth is committed to the Northbridge precinct and its community. There are many ways the City is working to activate Northbridge, including economic development, space activation and events. The City supported the Chung Wah Association with the Chinese New Year Fair 2013 by sponsoring the event. This is one of many ways the City of Perth is actively working to promote the Northbridge area and strengthen the cultural diversity of the precinct. For much of the Northbridge community, Chinese New Year is the largest celebration of the year, and I am please that the contribution made by the City was able to help make the event such a success. The Northbridge Piazza played an important role, hosting a number of City events that incorporated Chinese New Year celebrations. Each month, the City presents a family event at the Northbridge Piazza called 'Piazzarama Northbridge' which features a new theme each time. In February, Piazzarama took on a Chinese New Year theme, complete with lion dance performances, a Chinese musical instrument ensemble and cultural dance. Children tried their hand at calligraphy, were entertained by the roving Chinese entertainers and watched films 'Mulan' and 'Shaolin Soccer' on the superscreen.

This family day out organised by the City of Perth with the assistance of the Chung Wah Association was a perfect way to begin celebrating Chinese New Year as a family. Children are such an important part of our community. Inquisitive minds have a hunger for new experiences and fun. The 'Piazzarama Northbridge' was a free event that gave both children and parents an opportunity to learn about Chinese New Year celebrations. The City of Perth, through the use of the Northbridge Piazza Superscreen, also sought to engage Perth's Chinese community in the lead up to and during Chinese New Year. This was achieved through regular Chinese programming, a Chinese Film Season and interviews with the local community. The City worked with the Chung Wah Association to produce a series of interviews with the Northbridge Chinese Community, including Wing Loong Bookshop, Lan&Qin Grocery, Chung Wah Lion Dancers, Northbridge Newsagency and a Lantern Maker. Throughout the week leading up to the Chinese New Year Fair, the Northbridge Piazza aired Chinese TV and news programs from mainland China and Hong Kong, including key celebrations like the Hong Kong Fireworks and CCTV New Year's Gala and Countdown. Using the Piazza SuperScreen, the local community was able to embrace the diversity of Chinese New Year as footage from celebrations from Perth and around the world were displayed. In the lead up to the Year of the Snake, the Chung Wah Association and the City of Perth shared a common goal, making this Chinese New Year the bigger and better than ever before. I believe we were able to achieve this. Together with the Chung Wah Association , the City of Perth was able to put together an amazing line-up of events and activities, which were well attended by the community. Chinese New Year celebrations were also well supported by the local media community. The West, Sunday Times, Perth Voice, Guardian Express and Mix 94.5 all helped to promote the events and encourage the community to join the celebrations. The pinnacle of the celebrations was the Chinese New Year Fair on February 10. Despite the heat, 50,000 people came into Northbridge to welcome in the year of the Snake. The City of Perth was privileged to play such a large role in the Chinese New Year celebrations. As a local government we intend to continue to strengthen the social and economic ties with the Chinese community here in Perth and internationally. I hope you and your family enjoyed this year’s Chinese New Year celebrations in Northbridge and I wish you a safe and prosperous year.

Premier Colin Barnett and Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi cutting the ribbon to officially open the Perth Chinese New Year Fair.

BECOMING A TRUE HOST

Despite the forecast of extreme heat of 41 degrees, it was estimated that more than 50,000 people thronged the fair throughout the day, representing about 60% increase on last year’s crowd. This is a strong indication of the popularity and relevance of the event for the general public and the Chinese community. The event itself is like a large scale integration process which has helped to gel the people from different backgrounds and showcased the true spirit and success of multiculturism in WA.

If you have read the March 2012 edition of the Chung Wah Magazine, you may remember my article entitled “Learn To Be A Host”. A year has passed, and the points I raised in that article still resonate, and have in fact been reinforced in the bigger and even more successful 2013 version of the Perth Chinese New Year Fair. Allow me recall some quotes from my article last year: “It is time that we learn to be a host in the country we call home, to understand, take charge of, and exercise our responsibilities, obligations and rights on this land.”

◎Sammy Yap President of Chung Wah Association

“The Chung Wah Association holds the responsibility to maintain an open and continuous learning and social integration processes for the Chinese community. We can use our experience in organizing the Perth Chinese New Year Fair to demonstrate how we have learnt to negotiate and deal with government, understand and abide by its rules and regulations, and most importantly learnt how to gain the attention and support of the mainstream society.” “Our hard work, persistence, and effective strategies have attracted the attention from the mainstream media such as .... this is because it could be seen that community resources have been applied to an event that can be shared and enjoyed by the public, hence its success is the wish of the government and the mainstream society.” “I believe that if we keep up our effort and make the Perth Chinese New Year Fair a successful major annual event in the city of Perth, we will attract more attention and support from the mainstream society, and in the process create more commercial opportunities for all.” “I also strongly believe that if we stand up and walk out of our shell to assume the mentality of a host in managing our relationship with members of the public, government officials, other ethnic groups, and our countries of origin, we will be able to enjoy the freedom and equality provided by Australia. Accordingly, we will then gain the respect, honour, and status befitting that of a host.”

16

We had learnt from the mistakes and shortcomings from last year, and improved significantly on the overall organisation and management of the event, as evidenced by the mountain of positive feedback from all quarters. The City of Perth sent their Communication Officer and Marketing Officer to help us coordinate the media and promotional activities, resulting in a far wider and higher level of marketing. The number of invited guests jumped from around 50 last year to 125 this year. It signifies that more people are paying more attention and taking a greater interest in our event, and was graced by even more distinguished people such as the Premier, the Leader of the Opposition, and the Lord Mayor of Perth. I also strongly believe that our ongoing efforts in raising the profile of the Association and the Chinese community have resulted in the various invitations that I have received as a guest speaker at functions or meetings hosted by Woolworths, Westpac, and Lotterywest. Multinational and large companies such as Chevron, Bupa Health, and various banks have also contacted me to discuss working partnerships or opportunities. Tourism WA have invited me to be on their China Strategy Working Group, while Eventscorp are talking to us on a number of major projects and initiatives. Yes, we still have some way to go, but we are well on our way to becoming a true host!

URSHERING IN THE YEAR OF THE SNAKE

 A Volunteer’s Diary ◎Samantha PAN

I joined the Chung Wah Association as a volunteer after finishing my Year 12 WACE examinations last year as I needed some “outside classroom” experience. Immediately after graduating from high school, it’s a norm to look for part time job to gain working experience and of course earn some pocket money. Mum and Dad had a better idea and suggested that I volunteer at Chung Wah as well. That’s how I got associated with CWA. My initial idea of a voluntary job was merely a ‘one day thing’ with little commitment, a couple of hours and effort out of my daily routine. Boy, was I in for a surprise for it became something more than just voluntary work; it was a chance of self discovery and a life changing experience! My very first task in Chung Wah was to make phone calls. Most people would deem that as a simple task, almost too easy. But I shuddered at the thought of calling random strangers. I dialled the numbers nervously not knowing what to say, and I stuttered at one point feeling panicky. I have never worked in an office before, I did not know how to write an official email, I lacked the experience.... you get the gist. However, working in Chung Wah gave me a golden opportunity to open my eyes and see things outside the box. During my short stint of 3 months in Chung Wah, I interacted with people from all walks of life and tackled issues that can never be learnt in school.

I made my fair share of mistakes along the way, including communication errors and what not. However, with the upcoming Perth Chinese New Year Fair which was just around the corner, there was no time to dwell on it, I had to move at a fast pace. Despite that, I did not feel downcast, rather, I felt elated, a sense of accomplishment, for being able to provide help where needed. The Chinese New Year Fair was definitely an eye opener for me and the all day long event had given me an insight into how a major event is run and organised. From managing RSVP’s from VIP invitations to dealing with stall holders, I could almost paint the picture of chaos. Surprisingly, everything (well, almost...) ran like clockwork, except with some minor hiccups along the way. But hey, according to Murphy’s Law, “anything that can go wrong will go wrong”, even the best laid plans can go awry, so a reminder to myself: try not to repeat the same mistake! But most importantly, I’m grateful to everyone who involved with the in giving me full support and cooperation which helped to ensure that the event ran smoothly on that day. Many months of preparation, hard work, and perseverance have gone in to make the event possible! Of course, I would not have been to achieve what I have, without the inspirational leadership of President Sammy Yap, and his faith and believe in me. I must also thank my two mentors,

URSHERING IN THE YEAR OF THE SNAKE

Tina Qiu, the Event Coordinator, and Raine Chaw, the Event Officer, who taught me so much with patience and tolerance. Their faith in me to carry out my duties gave me great confidence and belief, and they also gave me valuable advice on issues relevant to Chung Wah or generally about life itself. My deepest gratitude would be to my parents for suggesting volunteering in Chung Wah and for giving me unconditional support. They too, were grateful for the experience that I have gained in real life, and commented that I had grown up “overnight”. To me, volunteering is one of the best avenues to step out of the comfort zone, and I certainly made the best choice. And volunteering with Chung Wah has been an invaluable personal developmental experience for me that money cannot buy. It was hard work throughout but the enjoyment and satisfaction that I gained were priceless. In particular, I enjoyed the camaraderie with fellow volunteers, and learnt a great deal about team work. In a short space of time, I have become acquainted with people I can now call good friends, and I now have a network of lots of great people. I look forward to continue working with Chung Wah, especially in preparing for the 2014 Perth Chinese New Year Fair!

 A Volunteer’s Diary ◎Lace HAN

On 11th February, the morning after the Perth Chinese New Year Fair, Event Coordinator Tina Qiu received the following text message from a volunteer, Lace HAN: “Hi Tina, I was totally exhausted by the time I got home last night, and I am sure you are the same, hence I didn’t send this message to you back then. Today is a new day filled with sunshine, and I feel I must share my thoughts with you. As soon as I got home last night, my landlady, a lovely grandmother, could not wait to ask me, “Darling, did you worked as a volunteer today? I saw your event reported on TV. Come to share some interesting experiences with me!” At that moment, I truly felt the pride flowing in the hearts of everyone involved

in organizing and helping out at the Perth Chinese New Year Fair. Our voices were heard, our joy was shared, and we caught the attention of the public. When I heard the Chinese lyrics “Gong Xi Ni” (Happy New Year) ringing in Perth’s atmosphere, and when I saw people from different backgrounds immersing themselves in the joy of our Chinese traditional festival, I felt extremely proud to be a volunteer of Chung Wah Association. What made me more proud was the vision and courage underlining this event. Instead of celebrating “behind closed doors” with our own people, we chose to celebrate publicly and openly with people from a diverse background, full of confidence and pride in our culture. Thank you, Tina, for leading us in performing such a meaningful task. Thank you, President Yap and everyone else involved in the event. Thank you, Chung Wah Association, and Happy New Year. “

URSHERING IN THE YEAR OF THE SNAKE

FROM GRUNTS TO GRANTS ◎Mona Fong – Assistant Honorary Secretary of Chung Wah Association

Back in September 2011 when we first started to plan for the inaugural 2012 Perth Chinese New Year Fair, we had very little time up our sleeves to apply for grants. Through sheer determination, we managed to secure $40,000 (excluding GST) from the City of Perth (COP) and $15,000 from the Office of Multicultural Interests (OMI), but were told by Lotterywest that there was insufficient time for them to consider our grant application. Hence, we learnt from that, and started our grant applications for the 2013 event much earlier in May 2012.

payment methods, different terms and conditions, and different acquittal processes. Certain funding bodies will support certain types of expenses but not others, so applying

Even though we were experienced this time round having been through the process in 2011, it was no easier. If anything, it was a bigger challenge with greater pressure, because the President told me that whether we are able to expand the event by closing 2 streets instead of 1, will largely depend on whether we can secure more money than last year. Trying to work out the funding cycles and closing dates for applications was in itself, a challenge. Get the dates wrong, and you can kiss the grant goodbye! Every funding body has different criteria, different systems, different application processes, different funding cycles, and different application periods. They also have different funding policies, different

for grants is not as simple as sitting down and completing the application forms, then submits them. It takes a lot of planning, budgeting, researching, liaising with grant officers, constant communication, etc, which required a lot of grunts! Once we worked out what we can and cannot do, what amounts and what expenses to apply from which funding body, and when to so, it was then a matter of putting our heads down and go full steam ahead. What drives me is often what is quoted by our President; the two “P” words – Patience and Perseverance. These are indeed words of gold! For the 2013 event, we lodged grant applications for $50,000 from the City of Perth, $50,000 from Healthway, $20,000 from Lotterywest, and $15,000 from OMI. Through good planning, budgeting and research, we got the full amounts we applied for, with the exception of Healthway, for a total of $85,000, which was a great achievement. Although we didn’t succeed with Healthway, their officers advised that it was not for lack of effort, but because they have exhausted their budget. They strongly encouraged us to apply for

funding for the 2014 event as they saw our event as very relevant to their funding policies. Having secured the grants, further planning is necessary to map out when and how much funding we will receive before, during, and after the event, in order to ensure we can meet all our financial obligations. For example, COP would pay one instalment before the event and the balance after the event, while Lotterywest will only pay upon the production of receipts of actual expenses incurred. With the large number of suppliers and service providers we need to deal with, complicated by their different terms of payments, it made for a very complex planning exercise. More grunts! Then, we needed to look at the terms and conditions of each grant received to ensure that we fulfil our part of the contract to the satisfaction of the grant providers. Again, every funding body has different requirements, right down to details such as the approved logos to be used, all promotion materials to be approved by them, types of banners to be used, etc, etc. How well we meet these terms and conditions will go a long way to determining our success in future grant applications. Hence, it was like running a fine comb through the myriad of terms and conditions, and liaising with our event coordinator and

officers to ensure that they do not miss out on any of the finer details. In addition, we had to produce a comprehensive risk management plan to address all possible risks on the day of the event, and have contingency plans in place for every single thing that can possibly go wrong, ranging from extreme hot weather to mobile toilets not flushing! Even more grunts, this time from everybody involved!! All the hard work paid off handsomely in the end when more than 50,000 people turned up at the 2013 Perth Chinese New Year Fair despite the oppressive heat. The high quality of planning and organising by the event team enabled everything to go smoothly with lots and lots of compliments and positive feedback.

当你们需要了解更多中国文化 的时候,这里有一条寻根之路∙∙∙∙∙∙ This is a column written for the English speaking readers, introducing various aspects of Chinese culture, partly based from the book “The Chinese Dimensions, their roots, mindset and psyche”, written by Dr. Yit-Seng YOW. We perceive this column as a form of “cultural infusion”; dedicated to those who, through no fault of their own, did not have the opportunity to be exposed to the Chinese language and culture. When you need to know more about Chinese culture, here lies a path to your cultural roots…

In search of cultural identity and heritage

Part 11: Coupled Poems ◎Y. S. Yow A unique form of Chinese literature not found in any other language is the ‘coupled poems’ or 联 duìlián. These are poetic phrases written in pairs. These phrases are very often written in beautiful calligraphy, framed or mounted on walls at homes and offices. The duilian is unique in that the author needs to compose two corresponding phrases within strict guidelines. The general rules for writing ‘paired phrases’ are: 1. The number of words in each phrase must be the same. 2. The type of word in each phrase must correspond. For example, if the first word in the first phrase is a noun, the first word in the second phrase is also a noun. If the second word in the first phrase is a verb, the second word in the second phrase must also be a verb, etc. 3. Above all the coupled poems as a whole should be meaningful, even convey a message.

Consider the famous poem”Pondering in the still of the night” 静夜思 by LI Bai, the Tang dynasty poet 举头望明月 Lifting my head, I see the bright moon, Lowering my head, I think of my hometown In terms of coupled poem, it can be seen as: 举 Lift (verb) 低 Lower (verb) 头 Head (noun) 头Head (noun) 望 See (verb) 思 think of (verb) 明月 bright moon (noun) 故乡 hometown (noun)

40

Two idioms, “crossing the oceans” 漂洋过 海and “taking roots on land” 落地生根 are commonly used to describe migrants. The first idom refers to the physical process of moving to a new land overseas, while the second pertains to settliing down in a new environment. They could be considered as coupled poem, as 漂piāo 落luò 洋yáng 地dì 过guò 生shēng 海hǎi 根gēn

Drift or voyage (verb) Drop or settle (verb) Ocean (noun) Land (noun) Going across (verb) Sprout, grow (verb) Ocean (noun) Roots (noun)

It is always possible to extend the coupled poems, provided the rules are followed. 草草漂洋过海 “crossing the oceans in simple, unassuming circumstances” 真真落地生根 “really (or genuinely) taking roots in a new land” Both草草 (simple) and 真真 (real or genuine) are adjectives. The addition of 草草 (simple) indicates that when the opportunity to migrate to Australia eventuates, we normally grasp it without detailed analysis or long term planning. We make the decision to come to Australia based on gut feeling that it would be much better for ourselves or for our children. Very often we end up coming in rather simple, unassuming circumstances; not in a position to demand a lot of answers, rather uncertain about future prospects. After several years, some of us would be blessed with a job, raised a family; begining to establish ourselves “finally settle down” or “really take roots” 真真落地生根 in our new environment. Amongst us there would be those who feel at home almost immediately; accepted by others in their workplace and society. At the same time there are also migrants who, in spite of having being residents for three or four decades, have yet to pick up their basic communication tool – English, and have not gone beyond the

“getting to know you” stage outside their own community. Needless to say fluency in English as well as individual mind-sets contribute to the ease of settling down. It is of coursse possible to further extend the coupled poem, provided the whole composition conforms to the rules, and the idea makes sense. In my book written a few years ago we added to the first couplet we added “not asking a lot of quesstions” 无多他问, reflecting the reality that not at the time we migrate, not many of us are in a position to demand a lot of answers, we normally take things as it comes, and face up to the realities and challenges in a new land. To do so we would came up 有唯自对, another four letter phrase that match up as a compliment of a coupled poem. It is difficult to translate the term 有唯, though it refers to a sense of “self-assertion” or “selfassurance, confirmation” “Self-check” 自对 relates to the process of checking realities with ideals, a process of “coming to terms with oneself”. Putting it all together, the coupled poem states that 草草漂洋过海无多他问 “We cross the oceans in simple, unassuming circumstances, without raising a lot of questions” 真真落地生根有唯自对 After we have really settled down we would develop a sense of

self awareness and assertiveness, ask ourselves on various issues, to check the realities against our initial aspirations. Dulians are used as part of poetry, in speeches or messages, when the appropriate occasions arise. They are printed on advertisement, congratulatory messages, greeting cards, invitation awards, cards, certificate of appreciation, letters, newspaper, notices, online websites, plaques, posters, public notices, scrolls and so on.

Community program helping you

“Walk Safe, Cycle Safe” According to a study on traffic-related pedestrian injury conducted by Monash University in 2010, pedestrians born in non-English speaking countries had the highest hospital admission. Senior citizens especially those from non-English speaking backgrounds are the highest risk group in traffic-related injuries. On 8 March, a launch of “Walk Safe, Cycle Safe” under the 2013 SGIO Community Grant was held at Chung Wah Balcatta Hall. It attracted almost 100 attendees from non-English backgrounds interested in becoming more familiar with road safety and road rules that could help strengthen their confidence walking or cycling in Perth. We invited WA Police, Senior Constable Zainon Modhamed Kassim delivered talk address the safety concerns and issues of pedestrian while walking or taking public transport, as well as how to deal with emergency situation and contact emergency services. For the cycling safety part, we had the Ride Captain from the Over 55 Cycling Club, Mr. Chris Muller who rode his bike from Joondalup to our centre at Balcatta on the event date. In his 60s, Chris had physically demonstrated how cycling kept him well. In addition, he also educated our audience about various communication signals between cyclists and pedestrians, the necessary accessories for cyclists and their importance. For the reflection of the day, a quiz session was conducted amongst the non-English speaking attendees. It was exciting to see the participants proactively raising their hand to answer questions that had learn from the day. ( Reported by Elvie Yap, photos by ZHANG Qing )

The Chung Wah Magazine is a bi-monthly publication of the Chung Wah Association. Founded in 1909, the Chung Wah Association is the largest and most established Chinese organisation in WA. We are recognised by the federal, state, and local governments as the spokesperson for the Chinese community in WA which numbers around 140,000. Each edition of the magazine uses a major theme or topic to report and explain matters and information that impact on our members and the local Chinese community. This is done through comprehensive research and interviews, and expressed via story telling and reporting based on fascinating and factual materials and information. We strive to use a variety of styles and formats to spread the messages of the Association in promoting cohesion within the Chinese community, preserving our rich heritage, and increasing our efforts in human services. In the process, it generates a historical record for the Association and the WA Chinese community of their life experiences and changes through time. The magazine is posted to our members, the business community, government departments, and other non-profit organizations. It is available for sale at a number of retail outlets in Northbridge, and the electronic version is posted on our website www. chungwah.org.au as well as on www.aupeopleweb.com. It has grown in popularity and reputation since its inception in July 2011, and has helped the Association in attracting new members and generating goodwill.
