and promotes the growth of chamber of commerce executives. It has representatives from 16 western states, and even some Canadian provinces.

The publication awards are meant to showcase the best chamber-based publications. I might be biased toward it, but as the former two-time publisher of the San Diego Business Journal, I also speak from experience and the truth is that our awards are well-deserved.

This publication has come a long way from when I started. We sometimes find previous editions around the office and marvel at how dramatically different our “CBJ” is today than it was at its start. Its mission is still the same, it’s a publication about our Chamber and about our members — but it’s obvious that our publication has changed with the times.

Unless you are reading this column online, you’re holding the Carlsbad Business Journal in your hand. I think you’ll agree that this is a high-quality, attractive publication, that reads just like a newspaper. That is because we have high standards for the stories that we publish. We’re not just running promotional pieces for the Chamber or its members. We want to tell stories of the successes of our members to inspire others who might be looking to either start their own business. We also help you get your story to the public.

One of the best comments we received on the evaluation for the WACE Award is, “This seems to be where Carlsbad businesses go for business news.”

There is no secret to our success.

It’s a commitment to excellence

that has helped us sustain this level of achievement. Our editorial department is always looking for interesting stories to tell. If you are a member of the chamber, I ask that you consider your part and share your stories with us. For this issue, for example, we are presenting the stories of how some of our members started their businesses.

Last month we asked for stories from members who work with their spouses or partner. We thank all of you who contributed, and ask that you keep an eye out for other opportunities on how you can be featured in the Carlsbad Business Journal. Keep in mind that demand for coverage is high and our space each month is limited, so coverage depends on several criteria, including the availability of space and the newsworthiness of your contribution.

That brings me to advertising, one of the foundations of the CBJ and the only way you can guarantee that you can get into the Carlsbad Business Journal with your exact message.

One of my primary goals as board chairman is to ensure that the Chamber is poised for success not only now, but for years to come. This Chamber weathered the recession far better than most and we are back on a growing track as the economy revives. In order for the Chamber to be a successful leader in the community now and in the future, our key focus will be on delivering value to our members.

reasons. The Chamber offers more than 350 different events a year each with their own appeal from

technology and human resources seminars to First Friday breakfasts and Sundowners. We want members to know and understand that the Chamber is working to better the business climate here in Carlsbad and throughout state all throughout the year. I have asked our board to mobilize and go out and visit members this year. We want to say thank you for being a member and to find out what would be helpful to your business.

members pays you a visit as well.

To kick things off In March, the Chamber staff, the Board of Directors, and other volunteers will go out on the street to take the pulse of Carlsbad’s business community.

We’re going to visit businesses in Carlsbad to thank them for doing business in the city and to ask them personally how they’ve recovered from the economic downturn. We also want to know what we can do to assist them.

We are not going to necessarily be able to bring you new customers, but we can show you a way to get to know a lot of great business people with goals similar to yours. Once they get to know you and you get to know them, they likely will want to do business with you. We all would prefer to do business with people we know and trust. Many of us will almost exclusively do business with Chamber members. Look for our teams to be out on the street primarily on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays in March.

Lastly, our Board retreat in late January gave us an opportunity to hear from City and School District leaders. Mayor Hall and Councilmember Wood participated with the Board and staff on a exercise led by Nancy McMonigal of Locus Media, a chamber member, and Gregg Fasbinder of Locus Media/ Sagatica.

We developed a Marketplace of ideas and then met in small teams to expand upon some of the popular ideas and determine if they were feasible and who would be willing to invest time in an idea to bring it to fruition. We will keep a spotlight on those ideas over the course of the year to see what we can implement to help sustain the Chamber for the Future.
