Chamber members lead Carlsbad forward
C
arlsbad continues to move forward because of the strong relationship that the City of Carlsbad has forged with the business community. That was the takeaway from the address that Mayor Matt Hall gave to a sold-out audience of more than 440 at the State of the City Luncheon, held Friday, Aug. 22 at the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa. Hall said that projects under construction and in the planning stages

will infuse $2.7 billion into the community — including $514 million in commercial real estate projects and $1.6 billion in large projects such as the Poseidon Water desalination project. This shows that the city and the business community have a thriving relationship, Hall said. After his address, Hall added that he wanted to focus his address on collaboration because that’s what makes Carlsbad great.

What’s your cause? Chamber members give back to diverse causes
Most companies recognize the value of giving back to their community, both as a way to make a difference in their neighborhoods, and as a way to bring their employees together for a good cause. We asked our members to the causes that their company and employees support. We were not disappointed with the variety of supported organizations — including many that are also Chamber members. Since 1972, Toyota Carlsbad has supported local youth-oriented charities. This year, through the “We Care, You Choose” competition, Toyota Carlsbad is making contributions of $2,500 each to four organizations — all of which are members of the Carlsbad
Chamber of Commerce. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad, Carlsbad Educational Foundation, TERI Campus of Life and the Move Your Feet Before You Eat Foundation. In addition, this year Toyota Motor Sales may match the contributions. Tim Stripe, co-president of Grand Pacific Resorts, said his company’s employees enjoy being involved in the community. Grand Pacific Resorts supports many local organizations, including the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad and The Angel’s Depot. “We just feel there are a lot of great philanthropic organizations within Carlsbad that do wonderful things,” Stripe said. “The community has a lot of exciting

WORDS OF WISDOM
TED OWEN President & CEO CARLSBAD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
Elbert Hubbard’s wisdom still applies today A collection of thoughts from Elbert Hubbard, an early positive thinker and best friend to Dale Carnegie, are worthy of reading. • Do unto others as though you were the others. • Folks who never do any more than they get paid for, never get paid for any more than they do. • Never explain. Your friends do not need it, and your enemies will not believe you anyway. • It is foolish to say sharp, hasty things, but it is a great deal more foolish to write ‘em. When a man sends you an impudent letter, sit right down and give it back to him with interest 10 times compounded, and then throw both letters in the wastebasket. • Initiative is doing the right thing without being told. • An ounce of loyalty is worth a pound of cleverness. • God will not look you over for medals, degrees or diplomas, but for scars. • The greatest mistake you can make in life is to be continually fearing you will make one. • We help ourselves only as we help others. • Give me the man, who, instead of always telling you what should be done, goes ahead and does it. • Education is an achievement, not a bequest. • There are six requisites in every happy marriage. The first is faith, and the remaining five are confidence. • Do your work with your whole heart and you will succeed — there is so little competition. • A retentive memory may be a good thing, but the ability to forget is a true token of greatness. I think you can see why Elbert and I hit it off. I was saddened to see his books were last reprinted in 1923, and that he and his wife were lost when the Lusitania was torpedoed and sunk on May 7, 1915.

he Chamber has seven committees and those committees accounted for more than 100 meetings, which provided professional development opportunities, workshops and other crucial services to our membership.
The State of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce On Aug. 22, as the board chairman of the Chamber, I had the honor of presenting the State of the Chamber at our annual State of the City Luncheon. The luncheon attracted approximately 450 people and was attended by all members of the Carlsbad City Council, city department heads, and many elected officials from our neighboring communities. The Carlsbad Chamber with our collective size and leadership makes this event the premiere State of the City in all of North County. I talked about how everything the Chamber does revolves around our five core competencies. Those competencies are as follows: • Building A Strong Local Economy • P romoting The Community • Providing Networking And Business Development Opportunities • Representing Business Before Government • Political Action The Chamber has seven committees and those committees accounted for more than 100 meetings, which provided professional development opportunities, workshops and other crucial services to our membership. We promoted the community with two Carlsbad Village Faires which drew nearly 2,000 vendors and 200,000-plus attendees. We also conducted dozens of new business ribbon cutting ceremonies, anniversary celebrations and grand openings. We conducted an eco bus tour of sustainable businesses. We co-sponsored with the city a sold-out business

academy, held four (4) nonprofit roundtables and held symposiums with the city on disaster preparedness with the Ready Carlsbad Business Alliance. This group became the Chamber’s newest regular committee this year. It proved to be right on target with the recent Poinsettia fire, and the alliance was able to help in the recovery effort. The Ready Carlsbad Business Alliance’s Poinsettia fire efforts helped 98 families, distributing $25,000 to those who were affected by the fire. In the area of Networking, the Chamber held more than a dozen evening sundowner receptions, hosting hundreds of members at a variety of businesses citywide. In the area of Business Development, the Chamber, in concert with the small business administration, conducted more than 300 counselling sessions in our business success center with entrepreneurs who are looking to launch businesses right here in our region. Thinking of starting a new business? Why not take advantage of our business success center? In May, we launched the first-ever Small Business Awards Luncheon to highlight the accomplishments of our small business members. This was the launch of a very successful event that will most
likely become a regular part of our Chamber’s annual programs. Our annual programs include the Annual Awards Dinner, Our Outstanding Educational Program Awards Dinner and the State of the City Luncheon. Thousands of hours are spent supporting our member businesses. It is impressive when we recognize that the calendar only has 222 working days, and that the Chamber staff is made up of less than a dozen employees. In regards to our publications, the Chamber distributes all of it publications to all businesses in the city to enable members and non members alike to benefit. Our Carlsbad Business Journal newspaper for the second year in a row, won the best chamber newspaper in the fifteen western states. When called upon by our business members, the Chamber also represents business before government and occasionally gets involved in political issues. We have a very active Government Affairs Committee that advocates for businesses and writes letters opposing legislation that hurts jobs or imposes onerous demands on our businesses. We brought the Carlsbad sign back before the City Council and won unanimous support to recreate an iconic place making sign in Carlsbad on the Coast Highway Having represented AT&T in north San Diego County for the past 16 years, it is an honor for me to chair the 40-member Chamber Board of Directors that works hand in hand each day with the city staff and our member businesses to make Carlsbad one of the best cities in the nation.

ArtSplash takes place on Armada Drive Sept. 27 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sept. 28 from10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parking and admission are free. Features include museum-quality chalk paintings by professional artists coming to life on the pavement; art-making for children of all ages; live music; delicious food, including a Taste@ArtSplash on Saturday; sand sculpture by world-renowned Gerry Kirk; a Sunday car show; fine art vendors; silent auction of handpainted palettes and other instant collectibles; and the “cheesy” art of Sarah Kaufman’s cheddar sculpting. As this 12th annual festival approaches, Joni Miringoff confides, “Each year we strive to create a magical concoction of familiar favorites blended with features fresh and new. Perennial pleasers such as the magnificent chalk art attract event-goers. Innovations such as Amy Kaufman’s speed painting (a tiger in ten minutes!) and the Taste debut of the fantastic Green Dragon are unexpected delights.” A major delight for the ArtSplash team is giving back to the community. To date, ArtSplash has contributed more than $50,000 to diverse K-12 school arts and music programs. Many students volunteer and perform at the event. The La Costa Film Festival is returning to the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa for its second year on Sept. 18-21 with a world premiere, an opening night gala and Taste of North County, nightly red carpets, a tribute to actor Ed Harris and an even stronger focus on sports-themed movies. The La Costa Film Festival will feature 42 films from 13 countries starting with the opening film “Frank Vs. God” starring Henry Cusick and Ever Carridine (who will be in attendance along with the director, Stewart Schill). The screening will take place under the stars at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18, immediately following a Taste of North County. On Friday, Sept. 19 the festival will pay tribute to actor Ed Harris, who is scheduled to appear before a screening of the movie “Radio” along with director Mike Tollin. That same evening, the festival will host the world premiere of “Brothers in Exile” which details the true story of Orlando and Livan Hernandez, two half-brothers who defected from Cuba to play Major League Baseball. The premiere is just one of several festival offerings that center on sports, thanks to a partnership with a nationally recognized sports-focused content and media company. “We had a very successful inaugural festival in 2013 with a wide variety of films,

but we placed a special emphasis on sports because it connects with Carlsbad’s active year round lifestyle,” said film festival co-founder Ruby Callihan. The company helped festival organizer La
Costa Dreams, Inc. curate the festival’s sports themed narrative, documentary, and shorts programs, as well as to expand their outreach to filmmakers and distributors in this space. Organizers said the collaboration allows the festival to have a consistent and viable source to attract the best in sports features, documentaries, and shorts, while maintaining a balance of the finest independent films in all genres. Highlights from the sports competition include “Don’t Quit: the Joe Roth Story” which tells the story
of a local San Diego football player and his personal battle with cancer; and “Pantani: Accidental Death of a Cyclist,” directed by James Erskine, which portrays a man that was a hero to millions as he accomplished the unthinkable, winning both the Giro and Tour de France. “The Middle Distance” is the true story of Canadian world-class runner Charles Philibert-Thiboutot and the events of his life leading up to the Olympic trials in Calgary. HR laws keep morphing Two recent California cases and one large settlement have given us an opportunity to better understand California employment law. Ready for a quick lesson? Note-taking is encouraged:
EMPLOYEE’S USE OF OWN CELL PHONE MUST BE REIMBURSED
Labor Code section 2802 requires that employers reimburse employees for expenses incurred in the course of their work, including things like cell phone use. But what if the employee has an unlimited use plan? What cost has the employee incurred by making a few businessrelated calls? In August, the California Court of Appeals answered that question in Cochran v. Schwan’s Home Service, Inc., saying the employer has to pay a “reasonable percentage” of the employee’s cell phone bill when the employee is required to use his or her phone for work. The percentage of the bill will vary depending on the employee’s usage, the cell phone plan, and whether the employee’s usage was reasonably necessary. Since this case was a class action, the court sent it back to the trial court to determine how to calculate damages for the 1,500 class members. Employers should make sure their policies allow for reasonable reimbursement

of all employee expenses necessarily incurred in connection with work.
PTO BANK CAN BE USED FOR PARTIAL DAY ABSENCE
A California Court of Appeals has confirmed that when a supervisor takes time off, the employer may deduct that pay from a PTO or vacation bank, even for an absence less than half a day. Overtime rules require that “exempt” salaried employees be paid for a full week’s work despite taking time off, because they are paid for filling a position, not for putting in hours. Employers who dock an exempt employee for lost time may end up losing the exemption and having to pay overtime, penalties and other costs. In a 2005 case, an appellate court ruled it was okay for employers to require exempt employees to take a half day or more from their accumulated PTO or vacation time, and the labor commissioner adopted this policy. The plaintiff in Rhea v. General Atomics challenged that position, arguing
that California law protects PTO as a vested benefit, and that employers should have to pay for a full week’s work regardless of the actual time worked. The court’s July ruling sided with the employer, affirming the prior case and the labor commissioner’s policy. Employers should remember that they can’t pay less than a full week’s pay, but they can take some of that time from available PTO. Once the PTO is used up, any salary deduction may put the exemption in jeopardy.
LINKEDIN PAYS FINES DESPITE COOPERATION
LinkedIn learned a lesson in wage law this summer. The Department of Labor charged LinkedIn with permitting more than 350 employees in four states to work “off the clock.” Both federal and state law holds that an employer is liable for all hours an employee is “permitted or suffered to work,” not just those hours the employee puts on her time card. If you have any reason at all to believe that
your employees are working off the clock, it’s in your best interests to put a stop to it, pronto. The Department accepted LinkedIn’s explanation that it was unaware of the off-clock work, and in fact praised the company for cooperating in its investigation and immediately stepping up to pay more than $3 million in back wages to current and former employees. But on top of that the tech giant still had to pay another $2.5 million to those employees in liquidated damages under federal law. (Imagine if they hadn’t cooperated!) Here in California, an employer is more likely to be caught by an employee’s lawyer than the US Labor Department. In that case you can add thousands in potential penalties under California’s Labor Code as well as attorney fees for the plaintiff’s lawyers. So even innocent ignorance can have a high cost for California business. Storrow can be reached at lstorrow@hrlawyer.com
‘Big John’ continues tradition of excellence at Tip Top Tip Top Meats European Deli has earned the 2014 Certificate of Excellence from the website Tripadvisor for “consistently impressing travelers.” That’s one of two recent accolades for owner John Haedrich, whose restaurant also received a Gold Medallion for the “Best Ethnic Restaurant” by the San Diego Restaurant Association. This summer, Haedrich — or “Big John” as he’s affectionately known — continued his 12-year tradition of helping the children who participate in local 4H clubs by attending the HAEDRICH junior livestock auctions in Lakeside and at the San Diego County Fair. “I always bid and get the best animals,” said Haedrich, who spent $35,000 in Lakeside and $58,000 at the county fair. “It fills my heart to do this, to help the kids.” He butchers the animals and then donates the meat. He also offers to butcher and process the animals that others buy — and he prides himself both on the quality of the workmanship and on the competitive price. The two recent awards can be added to the numerous awards Haedrich has earned during his decades in business — and he has no intention of taking it easy, adding that he wants to continue to improve. “It’s hard to stay up there,” Haedrich said. “You can never just rest on your laurels.”
PR firm named Carlsbad’s top woman-owned business CCS/PR has been awarded with a Women Business Enterprise National Council certificate to recognize the PR firm as the largest women-owned business in Carlsbad. The firm is also the 28 largest women-owned firm, third largest PR agency, and 16 largest-minority owned business in San Diego County. CCS/PR was featured in the San Diego Business Journal’s Book of List in July. “It is truly gratifying to have made it onto this list, especially since San Diego is the nation’s 8th largest city. I am proud of my talented team for this accomplishment,” said Gayle Mestel, President and CEO of CCS/PR. “With our high client retention rates and ability to develop new business plus expand roles on existing accounts, we expect our ranking to be even higher next year.”

5 questions to ask your new doctor At some point, nearly everyone will need to choose a new physician, perhaps because of a change in insurance, a move to a new city or simply a feeling that it is time to make a switch. Your relationship with your physician is perhaps one of the most important in your life, and you want a provider who is not only highly knowledgeable and experienced, but also understands your needs and communicates effectively. Asking a few important questions like the ones below can help ensure you will feel confident and comfortable with your new doctor.
1. WHAT ARE YOUR QUALIFICATIONS?
Medical school is only the beginning of a physician’s education and training; an internship, followed by a residency in the physician’s area of specialization, also are required. Some physicians go on to complete a fellowship, which is another period of specialized medical training or research. Ask about board certification. A board-certified physician has gone beyond basic licensing and met nationally recognized standards for education, knowledge, experience and skills in a specific medical specialty. Studies have shown that board-certified physicians provide higher quality care and have better patient care outcomes.
TO YOUR HEALTH
LAWRENCE SCHLITT Medical Doctor SCRIPPS HEALTH
Ask if the physician has any special areas of expertise. A primary care physician, for example, may enjoy working with amateur athletes, or may have an interest in complementary treatments such as acupuncture or herbal medicine. Some gynecologists specialize in treating the challenges of infertility or menopause. Many physicians participate in research studies as well, or teach at local universities or medical schools.
2. WHICH HOSPITALS DO YOU ADMIT PATIENTS TO?
If you should need surgery or hospital care, ask where the physician will send you. Ideally, you want to go to a hospital, clinic or surgery center that has undergone a rigorous on-site evaluation against established quality and safety standards, such as that provided by The Joint Commission. Also, make sure your insurance plan covers care at the hospital with which your physician is affiliated.
3. HOW DO YOU LIKE TO WORK WITH PATIENTS?
Good communication is key to a strong relationship between physician and patient. Some physicians take a more authoritative approach to care, and tell patients exactly what to do rather than discussing various options with them. This approach may be welcomed by patients who want the doctor to make all the decisions about their care. Other physicians may offer several options and make a recommendation. For example, “You can reduce the sodium in your diet or take medication to control your blood pressure. I would
recommend the medication.” Still other physicians may explain all of the treatment options, discuss the pros and cons of each, and leave the final decision up to the patient. Decide how involved you want to be in your treatment decisions, and find a doctor with a similar approach.
4. WHO CAN I CALL IF I HAVE QUESTIONS?
If you have a question about your care, who can you contact for information? Physicians generally cannot come to the phone every time a patient calls. Often, calls are handled by a nurse or physician assistant, who
may be able to return your call sooner than the doctor could. If they cannot provide an answer or you really need to speak with the physician, ask how long it will take for him or her to get back to you. Some physicians may answer questions by email as well.
5. WHAT IF I NEED CARE ON SHORT NOTICE OR AFTER OFFICE HOURS?
If you are sick or injured, will you be able to be seen within a day or two? Some physicians make time for last-minute appointments or have their physician assistants or nurse practitioners available to handle them.
Also, know what to expect if you call after hours, such as in the evening or on a weekend. If there is no physician on call, you may need to go to an urgent care center or emergency department. Knowing what to expect from a new physician can help build trust, confidence and satisfaction. Remember, you and your physician are a team, and the better you work together, the better you will feel about your care. Lawrence Schlitt, M.D., is a family medicine physician with Scripps Health. VILLAGE BEAT
ASHLEY WESTMAN Project Manager URBAN PLACE CONSULTING GROUP
Importance of public space a historic notion In an age of increasing technology and online social connections, real face-to-face interactions are often hard to come by. But our natural human desire to connect in person should be nourished and supported by the environments in which we live. Public space is critical to those connections. Remember learning about the “agoras” of Ancient Greece? They were the central gathering places where political assemblies and public markets took place. How about the “piazzas” of Italy or the “town squares” of old Europe or early American cities? Nearly every culture throughout history has had forms of public gathering places; yet, many of our modern U.S. cities lack these amenities. But those cities that do recognize the importance of public space have found creative ways to incorporate it where people and families can enjoy coming together for music, events, or even just watching the world go by with a cup of coffee in hand. It’s difficult to fit a public square into the suburbs, but Carlsbad’s downtown offers the perfect opportunity to create more space to engage and connect its citizens. As you begin to participate in the reshaping of Carlsbad Village and the Barrio through the Master Plan public charrette process this month, keep the idea of public space in the forefront of your mind. Where do you currently go to gather, to meet friends or make new ones? Is there a central gathering place in the Village? Do the Village and Barrio need more public space? Where, and how, can we create it? Westman can be reached at ashley@urbanplaceconsulting.com.
Help write the Village/Barrio master plan Preserving the historical flavor of the Barrio and revitalizing the downtown Village have been City of Carlsbad goals for many years, and the city has begun to draft a new master plan that will guide future development and land use in the neighborhoods. Located on the coast between Buena Vista Lagoon and Tamarack Avenue, the Village and Barrio are Carlsbad’s original neighborhoods and blend together along Oak Avenue. They have been the focus of significant investments in public infrastructure over the past several years to revitalize them and keep them vibrant places to live and work. A master plan guides land use and development in a way uniquely suited for a particular area. The city originally adopted a Village Master Plan and Design Manual in 1995. Last year the City Council approved changes to that master plan to make the neighborhood more bicycle and pedestrian friendly and stimulate business activity. A master plan for the Village and Barrio will recognize the Village as a hub where small businesses thrive by serving both visitors and the residents who enjoy a more urban environment. The city realizes
CITY NEWS
KRISTINA RAY Communications Manager CITY OF CARLSBAD
that a strong partnership between the city and the community helps promote an economically healthy Village and Barrio where local businesses and property owners feel confident investing in the future. A new master plan will be an important tool in achieving that goal. When city officials began to discuss revising the Village Master Plan last year, they also began a process to enhance the Barrio by improving street lights, promoting pedestrian and bicycle travel, and changing the zoning to increase residential density. The city has long treasured the Barrio’s historical significance, and in the autumn of 2013 city staff approached two small groups of Barrio stakeholders to gauge their interest in extending a new Village master plan to include the Barrio. Joining the two neighborhoods in one master plan
appeared an ideal way to preserve the Barrio’s historical character while enhancing the neighborhood. A combined master plan also will improve movement between the two neighborhoods, which are adjacent but lack good connections. The two Barrio groups approached agreed with this proposal, and starting this month the city will kick off a series of events as part of the process of writing a joint master plan for the Village and Barrio. And while the term “master plan” may sound dry, the process of drafting it should be exciting.
This will be a highly public and collaborative process, in which people can offer ideas and suggestions on what Carlsbad’s original neighborhoods should look like in the future. The city has hired urban revitalization experts Dover, Kohl & Partners to draft the new master plan, and the firm’s team members have already met with residents, business owners, city staff and elected officials to hear their ideas. The city and Dover, Kohl will host a public design charrette where people can offer input on what they would like these two neighborhoods to look like
in the future. A charrette is an intensive public workshop that brings all stakeholders to the table over a short period of time to work closely with a design team and reach a draft consensus over the future land use of an area. As the design team, Dover Kohl will lead the charrette by setting up a temporary studio open to the public and holding community meetings in the Village and Barrio. In addition to the workshops, the city is collecting input online. Visit www. carlsbadca.gov/villagebarrio for more information.

Avoid the top 4 reasons for employee turnover Employment rates in the United States are steadily increasing; meaning businesses are growing and, as a result, seeking the right talent to fit their teams. With all the positive growth, one thing business owners have to be cognizant of is the danger of employee turnover. Identifying the type of employee you want and how to reach that talent may be one of the hardest parts of the hiring process. However, once you know who you want to hire, it’s important to have the systems in place to keep that employee happy to avoid costly turnover down the line.” On average, turnover costs U.S. businesses an estimated $300 billion each year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. What’s more, a study by the Opinion Research Group found that a staggering 80 percent of employees would leave their current position if presented with other opportunities. To avoid incurring these unnecessary costs avoid the four most common mistakes businesses make that lead to employee turnover.
1. MISMANAGEMENT OF HUMAN RESOURCES
Human resources in the Information Age is the equivalent to natural resources in the Industrial Age. How well do you manage and measure your greatest resource?
HUMAN RESOURCES
MIKE SHEA Principal ADVICOACH BUSINESS ADVISORY SERVICES
Once an employee is in the door, it’s up to the company to identify the individual’s talents, assign an appropriate work load and provide measurable goals for that person to work toward.
2. LACK OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Employees who become stifled, stunted or stuck in their jobs are more likely to find work elsewhere. A fouryear study by the American Society of Training and Development showed that firms who invest $1,500 per employee in training compared to those that spend $125, experienced on average 24 percent higher gross profit margins and 218 percent higher income per employee.
3. TALENT ACQUISITION
Bridging the talent gap can create a significant headache for a small business owner. Larger organizations have greater name recognition and potentially a

n average, turnover costs U.S. businesses an estimated $300 billion each year greater pool of incentives to pull from to gain the attention of top talent. However, working for a small business appeals to a lot of professionals, if the organizations can tailor compensation, work schedule, and benefits to meet the needs of their workers.
4. BAD HIRING DECISIONS
The staggering costs associated with employee turnover can be viewed as the
price of doing business in the modern age. It’s not that simple, a business owner or manager does have some control over how many employees leave each year. The most common reasons employees give for voluntary separation include boredom, weak or toxic supervisor relationship, wrong cultural fit and job descriptions that don’t match the reality of the position. A recent study cited that other costs associated with a
bad hire may include: • The cost to replace an employee, which can range from two to seven times their salary; • Hiring and training a replacement employee can vary from 25 to 200 percent of annual compensation associated with the position; and • The more an employee earns the more difficult and costly they are to replace. Callaway Golf announces dividends and $50m stock repurchase Calloway Golf Company and the Board of Directors have authorized the repurchase up to $50 million of the company’s common stock in open or private transactions. Strategic repurchases will be made after Calloway has assessed market conditions and buying opportunities. Calloway has a defined credit facility which defines the amount of stock that can be repurchased. The repurchase program will remain in effect until completed or terminated by the Board of Directors. The repurchase program does not require the company to acquire a specific number of shares. Calloway Golf has also announced that the Board of Directors has declared a regular quarterly cash dividend of $0.01 per share on its Common Stock. The dividend was payable on Sept. 12, 2014 to shareholders of record at the close of business on August 22, 2014.

SDG&E wins emergency preparedness award SDG&E was the recipient of the Commitment to Emergency Preparedness Award, presented by the Ready Carlsbad Business Alliance, to recognize the company’s commitment to advance planning and preparedness. This was the second year that the alliance presented the award, which recognizes the “accomplishments and contributions to prepare employees, protect and continue business operations and contribute to community recovery in the event of large-scale disasters.” The other nominees this year were: • LEGOLAND California Resort • NRG Energy, Inc. • Omni La Costa Resort & Spa • Park Hyatt Aviara Resort, Golf Club & Spa • Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas • Westfield Carlsbad To determine the winner, the alliance asked all of the nominees a series of questions, including what emergency preparedness programs they have implemented; how
they involved their employees in their preparedness process; and how their program benefits the community. SDG&E has a comprehensive community fire safety program, and relationships that serve customers with access or functional needs as well as a proactive public education program which direct mails nearly 35,000 preparedness brochures in multiple languages. It has preparedness partnerships with 53 fire agencies, firesafe councils, Community Emergency Response Teams and other community organizations. It provides charitable grants to support numerous regional preparedness organizations and defensible space programs and well as an award-winning vegetation management program maintaining more than 400,000 trees. It also has a dedicated emergency operations center, three mobile command centers and agreements to provide one of the largest domestic aerial firefighting resources to support fire suppression efforts this season.

see the Chamber and the business community as the engine — the locomotive that’s pulling the train. — Mayor Matt Hall
The City will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the first phase of construction at Westfield Carlsbad in October.
“The difference between our community and most others is that one individual only has so much capacity, but if you go in and multiply it by 10 people or beyond that, it’s exponential as to what you can accomplish,” he said. “Quite often, it’s how you put together different thoughts, different visions different dreams together and in Carlsbad, we found the way to do that. “I see the Chamber and the business community as the engine — the locomotive that’s pulling the train. You have to have a financial resource and they provide that. The minute you can energize that sector, the better you will become.” Hall singled out several projects — all of them from Carlsbad Chamber members — that highlight how the City of Carlsbad is working with businesses to keep Carlsbad on the right track. The projects included: • ViaSat — The company is currently constructing a new 143,000-square-feet building across the street from its headquarters on El Camino Real. Hall said the city expedited the design review and permitting process to allow the company to meet its construction goals. For example, the permitting process, which usually takes 6-9 months, was conducted in 3-4 months. “To ViaSat ... thank you for investing in Carlsbad,” Hall said. • Westfield Carlsbad — Mayor Hall announced that an Oct. 23 ribbon cutting will be held for the first phase of the shopping center’s renovation. He added that the new theater will open on Dec. 12 and that the second phase of construction will start next year and will be completed in the fourth quarter of 2016. • Education — Hall touched on a number of ways that local businesses

The university is also working with ViaSat to develop the first professional science masters degree in cybersecurity. He also pointed out that the city recently announced that it’s working with MiraCosta
College to open a Tech Career Institute. “It think this will be very influential for those of you who have to manufacture a product (and need) someone who will operate the machines that create that product.” • The Carlsbad Energy Center — The mayor said that negotiations with NRG Energy, Inc. and SDG&E — which accomplished in a week what might have otherwise taken months or years — will lead to the closing of the power plant in the near future. “That power plant is going to come down,” Hall said. “Let’s start dreaming the dream of what that could look like ... we need to start thinking what is 100 acres of shoreline in Carlsbad worth, and what can we do with that.”
things to be involved in.” Employees at Henry Schein Orthodontics (formerly Ortho Organizers) held a back-toschool fundraiser that benefited nearly 500 children by providing them with new backpacks and school supplies. The school-aged children were pre-identified by the Boys and Girls Club of North County and San Diego Youth Services. The students took buses to the Carlsbad company’s campus on Aug. 7. It was a festive event with a DJ, a barbecue with hot dogs and burgers and carnival-style games and a petting zoo. Tanya McManus, senior manager of marketing and communications, said the event was started more than 10 years ago by the parent company, New York-based Henry Schein. Last year, more than 3,900 children throughout North America received school supplies and backpacks. “Henry Schein founded our company in 1932 based on the belief that we can fulfill our responsibilities as a corporate citizen by giving back to the industries and communities we serve,” said McManus. “Ever since then, we have pursued the ideal of ‘doing well by doing good’ which Benjamin Franklin advocated centuries ago.” The TaylorMade Golf Co. is another standout in terms of their philanthropic endeavors. The company has a Corporate Giving Program that supports organizations that focus “on improving the health and vitality of the communities” that TaylorMade serves and it also supports community programs and organizations in which its employees serve as “board members, ambassadors and volunteers.” Spy Optic has its Happy to Help program, which according to company President and CEO Michael Marckx, this philanthropic platform serves in a myriad of ways, including raising money and helping families after the recent fires, putting on events to benefit charities, as well as local schools, clubs and institutions. And every Friday at 3 p.m., SPY opens its doors to everyone for a happy hour presentation. Speakers have ranged from master yogis, sports entertainers, magicians, holocaust survivors, war survivors, to bands. The happy hours are upbeat and help keep the community engaged. “In this life, the same people that make us happy
Henry Schein Orthodontics donated about 500 backpacks and school supplies to school-aged children. Photo by Scott Peltier everyday are also the first people to drop everything and pick us up in times of tragedy. A strong community provides security and exhibits dedication, and this notion inspires us to give back to the community that helped build SPY,” Marckx said. Thermo Fisher Scientific has also provided great support to the community. “As part of the InnovatioNation program, which started here in Carlsbad, students from elementary, middle and high schools tour our labs to learn about science and the impact it has,” said Karen Kinsley, vice president of human resources, adding how the company also sends many of its scientists into local classrooms to lead students in hands-on lab activities. The mission at Thermo Fisher Scientific, Kinsley shared, is to enable their customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer. Its philanthropic philosophy stretches from education, heath, and other critical societal needs. Modern Postcard contributes to an organization that uses signed memorabilia, concerts, photography and other fundraising events to raise money and create awareness to find safe, longterm housing for 18- to 24-year-old who live in San Diego County. “Modern Postcard’s President and CEO, Steve Hoffman, has a personal background in photography, so the decision to support a cause like (this) was a natural fit,” said Jessica Biondo, who does marketing and communications for the company. “Many of Modern’s loyal customers are photographers, artists and creatives due to the company’s legacy of
high quality print promotions and direct mail campaigns. Between Steve’s passion for photography and Modern’s history of supporting the creative arts, (this) is a fitting cause that uses creativity to empower homeless and disadvantaged youth in the local community and beyond.” Modern Postcard also supports San Diego-based organizations that help to empower homeless youth, abused and neglected children, and physically challenged athletes. Chamber member Logicopy has formed its own subsidiary, Logicopy Cares, provides copiers to nonprofits without signing leases or paying monthly rental fees (a maintenance agreement is required). “Logicopy realized that although many nonprofits could use the support of our office equipment, not all of them had the income or means to acquire this type of equipment,” said Conlin Krebs. “We had the ability to provide the equipment, and desire to help. The less money nonprofits spend on copying and printing, the more they can spend on doing what they do best; helping the community.” Alphatech Spine CEO Jim Corbett said the company chose Carlsbad as its home headquarters, and that while Carlsbad has helped enhance Alphatec Spine, the company and its employees have given back to the community towards nonprofits. “Our employees are encouraged to self-organize and participate,” he said. “We want to be part of the community and particularly in those activities and initiatives that make a difference for others.”

CSUSM named a ‘Great College to Work For’ The Chronicle of Higher Education honors campus California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) is one of the best colleges in the nation to work for, according to a new survey by The Chronicle of Higher Education. The results, released in The Chronicle’s seventh annual report on The Academic Workplace, are based on a survey of more than 43,000 employees at 278 colleges and universities. In all, only 92 of the 278 institutions achieved “Great College to Work For” recognition for specific best practices and policies. Results are

reported for small, medium and large institutions, with CSUSM included among the large universities with 10,000 or more students. CSUSM was the only public four-year university recognized in California. “Together, we have created an amazing learning organization, an institution that recognizes employee’s worth and that encourages collaboration across
divisions, taking risks and communicating openly,” said CSUSM President Karen Haynes. “Our collective efforts have made CSUSM a great college to work for and I am proud to lead this great institution.” The Chronicle is one of the nation’s most important sources of news about colleges and universities. “The institutions that the Great Colleges program recognizes provide innovative educational experiences – while also offering their employees outstanding workplace experiences – and we are eager to help readers learn more about them,” said Liz McMillen, The Chronicle’s editor. The survey results are based on a two-part assessment process: an institutional
audit that captured demographics and workplace policies from each institution, and a survey administered to faculty, administrators, and professional support staff. The primary factor in deciding whether an institution received recognition was the employee feedback. To administer the survey and analyze the results, The Chronicle worked with ModernThink LLC, a strategic human capital firm that has conducted numerous “Best Places to Work” program, surveying hundreds of thousands of employees nationwide. Great Colleges to Work For is one of the largest and most respected workplacerecognition programs in the country.

Is it Art? Or is it Engineering? Well, it’s both, and much more. Qualcomm’s Think-a-Bit Lab is a place where students become designers, creators and builders in a free-flowing environment where imagination rules. Qualcomm opened this lab in March to inspire middle school students throughout San Diego County to consider careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and join a new generation of engineers. Many of the jobs of the future will require STEM skills, and dynamic business/education partnerships like Think-a-Bit will challenge and engage students to pursue these exciting fields. I joined a team of educators in a field trip to Qualcomm’s sprawling Sorrento Valley campus last month to experience Think-A-Bit firsthand. The visit was arranged by Carlsbad Education Foundation Board member (and Qualcomm vice president of engineering) Scott Runner
Pictured, from left at the Think-a-Bit Lab are Aaron Sotille, a science teacher at Calavera Hills Middle School; Supt. Suzette Lovely, Valin Brown, executive director of the Carlsbad Educational Foundation; Michael Ecker, principal of Calavera Hills; Cesar Morales, principal of Sage Creek High School; and Scott Runner, vice president of egineering at Qualcomm. and included Sage Creek HS principal Cesar Morales, Calavera Hills Middle School Principal Michael Ecker, eighth grade science teacher Aaron Sottile, Assistant Superintendent Rob Nye and Carlsbad Education Foundation CEO Valin Brown. The CUSD educators observed middle school girls creating robotic hats in a hands-on lab, rich with technology and a fantastic array of design tools and accessories. Students worked with Qualcomm employees and volunteers to put on a “fashion show” for their families and teachers to display their imaginative,
wearable products. As CHMS ramps up its STEM emphasis, 150 eighth graders will visit the Think-aBit in the spring. Sage Creek High School is also offering several courses in the engineering and science fields, and Carlsbad High School has robust math, science and technology programs. Since Qualcomm is a major supporter of both the Linked Learning and Project Lead the Way programs countywide, CUSD anticipates enhanced collaboration with Qualcomm to support its engineering and STEM pathways. The CHMS and SCHS
leadership teams are eager to develop curriculum that incorporates their experiences with Qualcomm’s engineers and the Think-a-Bit Lab. The real-life applications of STEM concepts in the lab make classroom learning more relevant for students. CUSD educators are challenged to work together with Qualcomm and other work-based partnerships to bring these exciting careers to life for students. Think-a-Bit Lab: A creative meeting space where imagination, engineering and science come together to provide students an unforgettable hands-on experience.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad are launching “The Armory,” an on-campus club at Carlsbad High School. The teen program is available at no charge Monday through Thursday, from the end of school until 6 p.m. Each day will have a different focus including tutoring with volunteers from Cal State San Marcos, Palomar and Mira Costa Colleges; community service featuring projects that can be used to satisfy each student’s requirement for community service hours; and intramural sports including softball, ultimate Frisbee, dodge ball and tennis. In addition, all members will be eligible to participate in the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad’s “Youth of the Year” competition. The winner receives a $10,000 college scholarship. “The teen years are a critical time in a young adult’s life,” explains Teen Director Abby Snyder. “They are old enough to be at home alone, but that’s when many get into trouble. Transportation between school and our Club is an issue, so we are going to provide a Boys & Girls Club right on the Carlsbad High campus. We intend to give teens the opportunity to participate in our life-changing programs at a location that is convenient for them.” Abby added that the club plans to eventually expand the program to Sage Creek High School. City partners with MiraCosta The City of Carlsbad and MiraCosta College are partnering to open a new Technology Career Institute in a city-owned building where the college will train workers to fill a growing demand for industrial technicians in North San Diego County. The building, at 2075 Las Palmas Drive, will also house MiraCosta’s North San Diego Small Business Development Center, which provides resources, workshops and leadership programs for growing and established small businesses. MiraCosta’s new Technology Career Institute is designed to provide skilled workers for such industries as high-tech manufacturing, maritime technology and biotech manufacturing. The institute will expand the college’s machinist certificate program and create industry-recognized electronics engineering technician and robotics/automation certificate programs. “There’s a need for trained midlevel technicians in several growing industries in North San Diego County, including maritime technology such as underwater robotics and reverse osmosis,” said MiraCosta College Director of Community Services and Business Development Linda Kurokawa. “The Technology Career Institute will fill a large need by preparing skilled workers for careers in North San Diego County’s growing manufacturing and maritime industries.” MiraCosta has worked closely with industry leaders to create the curriculum to meet businesses’ growing needs, and graduates enter the workforce with skills that help them find well-paying jobs and advance their careers. The institute will offer accelerated 12-to-16-week programs where students will be immersed in a hands-on, skills-based environment. The U.S. Department of Labor awarded MiraCosta College a $2.75 million grant last year to establish the Technology Career Institute, and the college approached the City of Carlsbad to see if the city could house the program. City of Carlsbad Economic Development Manager Christina Vincent said the city’s vacant 22,627-squarefoot building on Las Palmas Drive is a good match for the college’s needs. “When MiraCosta approached us with the idea of housing the new Technology Career Institute, we saw this as an opportunity to help the college train workers for Carlsbad’s and the region’s businesses, who have said they need this type of training,” Vincent said. “We will lease the building to MiraCosta at a reduced rate because this program is so valuable.” The city will lease the building to MiraCosta College for $5,656.75 per month, or $67,881 annually, which the city estimates to be 65 percent below market rate. The Carlsbad City Council approved a six-year lease for the building Tuesday, July 8. The city purchased the Las Palmas building in 1986 and renovated it in 2001. It has been vacant more than four years and the city will make necessary repairs to make the building usable. The city estimates deferred maintenance costs at approximately $450,000, including repair of the building’s roof and heating, ventilating and air conditioning units.

As soon as you set foot on MiraCosta College, our dedication to veterans, active-duty personnel and their dependents becomes obvious. It becomes obvious through the recently dedicated Veterans Memorial Garden in front of the Administration Building on the Oceanside campus, a garden that includes five black granite benches, each inscribed with the emblem and name of a military branch and a ground covering that includes Flanders Field poppies. It becomes obvious through the Veterans Information Center, which provides veteran-to-veteran tutoring, benefits counseling, enrollment assistance and academic advising, as well as Disabled Students Programs and Services, which connects veterans to community-based resources for assistance with post-traumatic stress disorder counseling and learning disability assessment. And it becomes obvious through the makeup of the college itself. At MiraCosta College, just a few miles from the west coast’s largest Marine Corps base and

Veterans Center and veterans counselor Nancy Diaz have made the transition from being a Marine to a student simple and stress-free,” said MiraCosta College student Paula Sepeda. Sepeda isn’t alone in her positive assessment of the college’s dedication to veterans. Over the years, thousands of veterans and active duty military have earned a degree or certificate from MiraCosta College, where they received specialized counseling, priority registration and a supportive learning environment. Alex Klimek , for example, first came to Oceanside in 2001 when he enlisted in the service and was stationed at Camp Pendleton. Klimek studied biotech at MiraCosta College and earned a degree in May. “MiraCosta is a great school,” he said. “It has invaluable resources, the admissions office is very helpful, the book loan program has been great, and the college has an excellent tutoring program both in person and online.” Brendan Duffy, meanwhile, is a retired Marine Corps sergeant who earned a degree

Seventy years after our nation made a commitment to the 16 million veterans returning from World War II by enacting the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act — more commonly known as the G.I. The focus is on teaching, not research, so everyone who is there really wants to put on a good course. It’s very much about teaching and student– teacher interaction.” There is no doubt that MiraCosta College plays a vital role in helping veterans acquire the education and job skills necessary to stay up to date in an evolving economy. And the college is playing a vital role in helping veterans transition from the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan to civilian life back home. June’s 70th anniversary of the G.I. Bill is a reminder of the country’s responsibility to honor our veterans’ service not just in words, but also in deeds. At MiraCosta College, we proudly accept that responsibility and serve all of our students with pride.

COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE BRIEFS Merrill Commercial Real Estate has announced the lease of 918 square feet of retail space in Carlsbad Village at 2907 Carlsbad Blvd. The lesee is a men’s retail fashion and accessory boutique. Tyler Merrill with Merrill Commercial Real Estate represented both the lessee and lessor. It also reports the lease of approximately 1,500 SF of retail space 2907 Carlsbad Blvd. at the Carlsbad Plaza South Shopping Center on El Camino Real. The lessee. which Tyler Merrill also represented, is a Chiropractor. Cassidy Turley reports that Research Center Pointe, a 119,56-square-foot industrial building at 2210 Faraday Ave. has been sold for $16.35 million. Rick Reeder and Aric Starck, executive managing director and managing director with Cassidy Turley of San Diego, respectively, represented the buyer and the seller. Research Center Pointe is located Research Center Pointe at in the sought after, master planned 2210 Faraday Ave. Carlsbad Research Center business community, with near Palomar Airport and numerous shopping, dining and retail amenities as well as a deep supply of executive and work force housing. “This project was purchased at a significant discount to replacement cost. It is very well positioned to capitalize on Carlsbad’s strong research and development market with current vacancy of just 10 percent,” said Starck. The building is 68 percent occupied. The remaining 40,000 square feet is available for lease. Colliers International reports the lease of 1,595 square feet of office space at 5845 Avenida Encinas #131 in Carlsbad for $54,396 for a term of 24 months. John Walters of Colliers represented the lessee, an engineering company. The company also announced that a cloud-based business hosting company is leasing 1,845 square feet of office space at 2710 Loker Ave. West 5803 Newton Drive #180 for $77,490 for 24 months. Walters represented the lessor and Cassidy Turley represented the lessee. In another transaction, a fitness company is leasing 21,753 square feet of flex space in an industrial building at 5803 Newton Drive, Suite B (pictured above) in Carlsbad. The value of that transaction is $989,757 for 63 months. Finally, a designer swimwear company is leasing 5,224 square feet of office space at 1959 Palomar Oaks Way in Carlsbad for its headquarters. The value of the lease $553,062. Chris Williams and Gary Williams of Colliers International represented the lessor.
County office market dips, but still strong A mid-year report by commercial real estate provider Cassidy Turley states that the San Diego County office market hit a speed bump in the second quarter of the year with 250,595 square feet of net negative absorption. The dip follows six consecutive quarters of positive activity, during which time tenants absorbed 1.8 million square feet. Although direct San Diego County office vacancy (excluding sublease space) increased from 14.6 percent to 15.5 percent in the second quarter, it still is well below the peak vacancy rate of 18 percent recorded in 2009, the worst year of the recession. “The office market has turned the corner, with many areas already transitioning away from a tenant’s market,” said Brett Ward, Managing Director with Cassidy Turley’s in San Diego. “The second half of 2014 will be about continuing the growth trend and strengthening market fundamentals, both of which will move the San Diego office market into equilibrium with overall vacancy between 10 percent and 12 percent.” The 350,973 square feet of second quarter Class A absorption culminated 19 straight quarters of positive activity totaling 4 million square feet, or an average of 210,000 square feet per quarter. Class A vacancy of 12.2 percent compares to 19.4 percent in mid-year 2009. “As Class A supply continues to deplete, overflow demand will pursue Class B product, in turn lowering vacancy in that segment as well,” said Ward. Cassidy Turley reports seven under construction projects totaling 1.1 million square feet countywide. Two of these totaling 341,403 square feet will be completed by year-end, with the remaining projects (737,121 square feet) set to finish in 2015. To date, preleasing is limited to the new Sempra Energy Tower in Downtown San Diego and Bressi
Ranch Lots 10 & 11 in Carlsbad, both 100 percent committed, and to Spectrum Lab in Torrey Pines, which is 25.7 percent preleased. “While construction is on the upswing, the development drama is only beginning, and it is about who will be the first few developers to deliver a product that is in short supply,” Ward said. “With a large inventory of older buildings and the limited availability of new office space, there is a high demand for new construction or re-development to meet modern office requirements.” Cassidy Turley data shows that 70 percent of San Diego office inventory was built before 1990. The countywide average asking rent for all classes combined in the second quarter was $2.40 per month per square foot full service. This is up from $2.30 a year
ago but still well below the peak rate of $2.77 recorded in the first quarter of 2008. Compared to the same period of 2013, Class A monthly asking rent has increased 6.9 percent to $2.94, and Class B monthly asking rent has increased 2.7 percent to $2.28. “Looking ahead, the re-emergence of small businesses and large corporate tenant growth will continue to be the main drivers of new leasing activity,” said Ward. “Tenants in the market are looking for 3.9 million square feet over the next 24 months countywide, with central and south counties accounting for most of this demand. While not all tenants in the market will transact in the short-term, leasing activity is set to strengthen, further generating improved absorption and steadily declining vacancy.”

SEPTEMBER 2014
AN AWARD-WINNING, MONTHLY PUBLICATION OF THE CARLSBAD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
A ‘Green Team’ can make it easier to go green The Chamber of Commerce’s Sustainability Committee is making great progress with the development of our Green Business Certification Program. As we fine-tune the program’s components, there are things your business can do to get a jump start on going green. Once we launch the program and your business joins the certification process, you will earn points for green things you are already doing, so why not get started now? One of the easiest ways to introduce sustainable initiatives into your business is by forming a Green Team. A Green Team is a group of volunteer employees who meet regularly to create company or department-wide programs to address topics such as energy and water conservation, transportation, indoor air quality and waste management. The following tips can help you to create your Green Team:
SUSTAINABILITY
COMMITTEE
CHRISTINE BEVILACQUA Sustainability Committee Intern CARLSBAD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
WHO IS ON A GREEN TEAM?
It should consist of a variety of employees from different departments or positions. One team member should be from the executive staff, at least in an advisory role, to show executive-level support and help guide the ideas into actionable plans.
WHAT ARE THE FIRST STEPS?
Decide on a budget. This may be minimal investment of printing team t-shirts or hats and some signs or fliers or a more substantial budget that provides lunches for team meetings, contest
• Create a bulletin board in a highly visible area highlighting sustainability facts, infographics and suggestions. • Hold office competitions. Bring in a scale and measure how much garbage each unit or department in your building is creating per capita — make it a fun competition! • Create a low-impact lunch challenge: no plastic packaging, set up a zerowaste lunch display for inspiration. Watch for the upcoming re-launch of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce Sustainability Certified Green Business Program. Your Green Team initiatives will have you well on your way to certification and community recognition for your efforts! In the meantime, join the Sustainability Committee at its next meeting, held at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 12 at the Chamber, 5934 Priestly Drive.
prizes, excursions or sustainability seminars.
START SIMPLE.
Most teams find it easier to start with small projects and work their way up to more challenging initiatives. Use the first meeting to have the team walk around the workplace and identify a list of improvements to be made, then prioritize the list. Look for energy efficient practices already in use.
UTILIZE RESOURCES.
Research some basic online green office checklists that can help your team focus on specific categories. Start with a generic list then tailor it to your specific industry and workplace.
KEEP MEETING!
Be sure the meetings and activities are scheduled in a way that won’t interfere with employees’ workflow and create stress. Hold the team to their promise of meeting at least once monthly.
DEMONSTRATE EXECUTIVE COMMITMENT. The executive team must commit to reviewing the suggestions and discoveries of the team with the intention to take action. Make sure that the Green Team is empowered to make real change in your organization.
What else can a Green Team do? • Watch documentaries on environmental topics or invite guest speakers to present about recycling, green purchasing, composting or any sustainability topic of interest.

HOLIDAY PARTIES
CAROLYN REINMILLER

Hosting a holiday party provides an excellent way to reward employees for their efforts all year as well as serving as a great marketing tool for any size company. It does not have to be a daunting task, if you take into consideration the following tips.

START EARLY
This is a must. Most venues book up for the holidays months in advance. Starting a year ahead is the optimal scenario giving you the best choices and the greatest ability to control costs. It’s a good idea to book a space for next year’s holiday party immediately after the current year’s party. Barring planning that far in advance, a date can be confirmed later in the year, but sometimes there are limitations. Or consider having a party in early January which
