WASTE MANAGEMENT
C L E A N
T E C H N O L O G I E S
What are the current trends in Clean Technologies? Sustainability is of great importance. Today’s customers want to know that the waste they generate is handled in the smartest way possible. They want solutions that are better for the environment and, at the same time, better for the bottom line. They want services that focus on reducing, recycling and recovering waste. They also want waste to be used in beneficial ways, like generating renewable energy or creating alternative fuels that vehicles can run on. They want options for every waste stream, whether it comes from a house, restaurant, hospital or elsewhere. And we want that too.
Where do you see your company’s growth? Our focus remains steadfastly on continuing to lead the industry in our core businesses of collection and disposal, while also charting the course for the future management of waste. We will extract greater value from the wide range of materials we collect. This is our goal, since today’s customers are counting on us to develop and deliver solutions that are not only good for business, but good for the planet, too. We are doing it every day. As North America’s largest residential recycler, we expect to manage more than 20 million tons every year by 2020, up from the more than 12 million tons we handled in 2012. Part of that will come from expanding on proven technology to make recycling easier for consumers. Another part will be investing in future technologies, like converting organic waste from the materials stream to make high-end compost in some segments of the country.

aste Management is the largest environmental solutions provider in North America, serving more than 20 million customers in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. As part of its strategy, Waste Management is committed to developing new waste solutions that can help communities and organizations achieve their green goals, including zero waste. With the largest network of recycling facilities, transfer stations and landfills in the industry, our entire business can adapt to meet the needs of every distinct customer
group. In 2012, we worked with more than 100 Fortune 500 companies and helped more than 150 different communities become greener. Waste Management is also a renewable energy provider, producing more than twice the amount of renewable electricity than the entire US solar industry. One of the ways we do this is by recovering the naturally occurring gas inside landfills to generate electricity, called landfill-gas-to-energy. By the end of 2012, we operated over 138 beneficial-use landfill-gas projects, producing enough energy to power nearly 500,000 homes.
MIRACOSTA COLLEGE

What are the biggest trends in education right now and how is MiraCosta College addressing them?
DR. FRANCISCO RODRIGUEZ Superintendent/ President

Ensuring that students have access to higher education remains a top focus for colleges throughout California. College opportunity paid a significant price during the recession and the consequential state-implemented budget cuts. California community colleges sustained over $1.2 billion in cumulative budget cuts between 2008-09 and 2011-12, and, across the state, access to college for over 500,000 students was eliminated. Throughout the recession, however, MiraCosta College remained one of the few community colleges that experienced sustained growth. Through prudent and thoughtful fiscal planning, student enrollment at MiraCosta College grew by nearly 35 percent. In response, we are hiring 10 new full-time faculty members, have expanded course offerings on Fridays and Saturdays, and have built or are building much-needed science lab space on the Oceanside and San Elijo campuses. We also have teamed up with Carlsbad Unified to offer college classes at Sage Creek High School and now offer college credit classes to high school students tuition-free. Student success also remains a top priority. MiraCosta College continues to work with school districts throughout
ith an average class size of about 30 to 45, MiraCosta College students rave about their professors and the personal attention they receive. Both students and staff enjoy a friendly atmosphere, and the feeling that we are all here to help one another. Our diverse student body includes people from a variety of ages, ethnicities and cultural backgrounds. Students who plan to transfer to a fouryear university get on the right track through
TAG, IGETC, UniversityLink, and other transfer programs. MiraCosta College also has one of the highest transfer rates to the University of California out of all of the community colleges in San Diego County. Our students also typically earn higher GPA’s than non-transfer students. MiraCosta College’s district is coastal North San Diego County; approximately 35 miles north of San Diego and 90 miles south of Los Angeles. Major highway access is Interstate 5 and Highway 78; closest major airport, San Diego Lindbergh.
our service area to provide well-articulated pathways to college. We offer transfer pathways to UC, CSU and private schools. And, to fill our community’s need for skilled workers, we recently secured a $2.75 million federal grant to start a Technology Career Institute, a comprehensive training facility that will prepare participants—including military veterans and the unemployed—for high-skilled careers in the manufacturing and technology industries.
Where do you see MiraCosta College’s growth? North San Diego County is an epicenter of educational excellence and, since 1934, MiraCosta College has been a proud part of it. As I think about the next 80 years of MiraCosta College, I’m very optimistic about our future. Our foundation for continued leadership and service is solid and strong. We will build on the excellence of the last 80 years and look toward the future with great hope and optimism.

What is the biggest trend in your industry? How are you addressing it?

The issues related to the Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”) are the biggest challenges faced by Tri-City Medical Center because the payment for services is being reduced while the services we are required to perform have been increased. To address these challenges, we started to work on ways to control the impact of the new law several years ago. Tri-City Medical Center has embraced new innovative medical technologies and has established new delivery models. We continually promote the value of innovation in healthcare services. Tri-City Medical Center is a leader in San Diego County in robotics and minimally invasive technologies, and is both the only hospital in San Diego County and one of only four hospitals in California with the Mazor Robotics Renaissance system – an innovation in spine surgery. Furthermore, Tri-City Medical Center is also adapting to new delivery models. The hospital’s Accountable Care Organization, North Coast Medical ACO, was the only one in San Diego chosen
