Message from the president The World Celebrates the Profession of Landscape Architecture in April Salam One Malaysia, greetings to all ILAM members and faithful readers. The month of May 2012 finds us almost half way through the year, and, for the past few months, although it seems only a short time, we at ILAM have experienced a busy and meaningful first quarter of the year. Thanks must go to our dedicated council members and fellow landscape architects who have been involved in the various activities organised by ILAM for their tireless efforts thus far. Each year, the 3rd of March is set aside as National Landscape Day followed by April being gazetted as World Landscape Architecture Month. This time of the year is often filled with activities in our calendar such as the ILAM Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards (MLAA) and the ILAM Annual Gala Dinner, held in conjunction with the national and global celebrations. This special edition of Landscape Bulletin features the award winning projects of the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards (MLAA) 2011. To increase our public profile, and
promote the MLAA, for the first time, ILAM worked with New Straits Times (NST) to publish a 20-page special supplement about the award winners. Released the day after the awards, copies can be read online by visiting the ILAM website or the ILAM facebook page. Also in March, ILAM organised a Belum-Temengor Rainforest Expedition in collaboration with the EMKAY Group, the Pulau Banding Foundation, Yayasan EMKAY and the Belum Rainforest Resort. An MoU of Research which aims to protect the Belum-Temengor Rainforest Complex by the collaboration between ILAM and Pulau Banding Foundation was also signed during the expedition. In conjunction with the approval of the new CPD and credit points system, due to be implemented next year, we at ILAM have already begun a Lecture Series in March this year. These actions are aimed at engaging members and thereby encouraging us to develop our knowledge, empower our practice and foster a stronger

This year marks the 30th Anniversary of the Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia or ILAM. For the past 30 years, landscape architects have often been the unsung heroes of Malaysia’s development projects. These passionate individuals work tirelessly to balance the needs of the environment alongside the construction of physical features such as buildings and public spaces. However, few know about the role of these professionals or how they contribute to our nation’s identity. The following is an exclusive interview with the President of the Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia (ILAM), LAr. Mohd Fadrillah bin Mohd Taib. How does the general public perceive landscape work? In Malaysia, people may perceive landscape work as merely planting trees or gardening, without understanding that what we see, where we live, what we touch in the environment around us, is more often than not the result of careful planning by a landscape architect. What is the general practice of landscape architects? The general practice of landscape architects is diverse. Tasks range from creating small gardens to constructing large public areas such as parks, streets, plazas and open spaces. Township planning, natural and cultural conservation and even regional landscape master planning and landscape guidelines for cities and states are also within our purview. When and how did the profession begin in Malaysia? The Landscape Architecture profession in Malaysia was initially formed on 24 September 1981. In 1982, we were accepted as a member of the Malaysian Professional Centre or Balai Ikhtisas Malaysia (BIM). Subsequently, international recognition came by becoming a member of the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) and the International Union of Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in 1984. At the time, Institut Teknologi MARA (known as UiTM, today) offered the first diploma in landscape design in the country and the first batch of students graduated in 1989. Professionals were then recognised at the government level, by town and country planning departments, by local authorities, state governments and higher education institutions in the late 1980s with the creation of the official position of Landscape Architect. As Malaysia developed rapidly in the 1990s, what role did landscape architects play? At the beginning of the ‘90s, Malaysia began a new era of development. With Kuala Lumpur hosting the 1998 Commonwealth Games, several mega-projects were undertaken, such as the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and KLCC, in 1992. Both projects witnessed greater involvement from various professionals in our field. This was a milestone for our group, as we were seen by the government as vital partners for any new construction project. We were also deeply involved in the planning and design of Putrajaya, which has become the nation’s first urban
area planned as a garden and intelligent city. Has ILAM garnered international recognition? In 2002, Malaysia hosted the IFLA Eastern Regional Congress in Kuala Lumpur. In 2007, we hosted the 44th IFLA World Congress in Putrajaya, attracting more than 450 delegates from 50 countries.

In 2011, we held the inaugural IFLA Asia Pacific Symposium on Landscape Architecture Education (SOLARE) in Putrajaya and we are proud to announce that we will be hosting the IFLA Asia Pacific Regional Cultural Landscape Symposium 2012 in December this year. We have also been selected to host the IFLA Asia Pacific Congress in April 2014 in Kuching, Sarawak. What is the role of the Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia (ILAM)? The institute serves several roles in Malaysia. We are the only professional landscape architect association, comprising certified practitioners, which ensures our members stay up to date with developments in the profession by completing a course and examination process (KAIAL). As of 2009, all landscape architecture consultancy firms must register with ILAM prior to their registration with the Ministry of Finance Malaysia (MOF). This demonstrates the government’s recognition of our profession. How does ILAM ensure the quality of graduates in order to fulfill market demands? At ILAM, we provide accreditation services to local universities which offer landscape architecture degrees and master’s programmes. This ensures the standard of education is on par with current demands, nation-wide requirements and international trends.
What are the job prospects for a fresh graduate? There is a wide range of career options available for fresh graduates. Besides working as a landscape consultant, one can choose to work in the public service sector, as most city councils and state governments have landscape departments, or teach at the tertiary level. Many graduates also find places in the property development sector or in the construction field. What annual activities are organised by ILAM? At ILAM, we organise events such as the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards (MLAA) which honour the best in landscape design and practice. We also provide courses and conferences, site visits, community outreach programmes such as exhibitions, public talks, and tree planting campaigns, all of which ensure knowledge and understanding is made accessible to the general public. We publish the annual Malaysia Landscape Architecture Yearbook alongside our periodical bulletin, “Landskap” and we have an online presence via our website at www.ilamalaysia.org.

Do you think the profession needs to be regulated? ILAM will strive to play a much needed role in our nation’s development projects and continue to improve public awareness about the importance of creating and preserving conducive living environments for generations to come. Therefore, the profession of Landscape Architecture needs to be regulated by an act of Parliament to ensure that public health and safety are protected.

Continuing Professional Development
During the ILAM EGM on 25 February 2012, the members supported the implementation of the ILAM CPD Programme, beginning in January 2013. This has elevated ILAM to another level of professionalism compared to other countries as we are among the pioneer national Landscape Architecture organisations in the Asian region to implement a CPD programme.
What is CPD? Continuing Professional Development (CPD) has been described as “the maintenance and enhancement of the knowledge, expertise and competence of professionals throughout their careers according to a plan formulated with regards to the need of the professional, the employer, the profession and society” (Madden & Mitchell 1993, p12). It is a scheme that encourages all Landscape Architects to participate in an ongoing self-monitored programme of education to improve the depth and breadth of their skills and knowledge of issues, relating to the profession.
Why is CPD Important to ILAM? Implementing ILAM CPD is clearly stated as a compulsory program in the World Trade Organisation (WTO). Economic Transformation Program (ETP) which addressed the importance of CPD as one of the efforts to develop capacity building and to enhance capability of local Landscape Architects. With the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) to be regulated by 2015, 75% of Landscape Architecture services will be open to globalisation. Therefore it is essential to ensure professional Malaysian Landscape Architects continue to be competitive.
Who is directly subject to CPD Programmes? The following categories of Landscape Architect are subject to CPD:• Registered Landscape Architects and Graduate Landscape Architects. • Registered Landscape Architects whose registration has been cancelled and desire reinstatement of registration. • Registered Landscape Architects whose registration has been suspended and desire reinstatement of registration. • Registered Landscape Architects who have failed to renew their registration and desire reinstatement of registration.
How will ILAM Implement the CPD Programmes? The trial session of ILAM CPD programmes began in March 2012 and full implementation starts from January 2013. All Landscape Architects (ILAM Corporate and Graduate members) are required to participate and maintain good records of their participation. All renewals of registration with ILAM for the year 2014 onwards must include evidence that members have undertaken and accumulated the required minimum CPD credit points from 2013.
Can I bring forward my points collected during the trial period from March 2012 to 2013? Yes, you can bring over all your points collected from March 2012 till December 2012 which will then be added to your points in 2013.
How do I collect CPD Points? CPD Points can be collected by attending Educational events (talks, seminars, conferences, technical visits), Social Events (annual dinners, MLAA Awards), organising activities or participation (presentation of papers, public lectures and teaching), publications, service to the profession (committee members of an event, attending meetings), and Research and Post Graduate studies. The details of the points system guidelines can be obtained from the ILAM website or from the ILAM CPD Brochure.

For those practicing outside Klang Valley and abroad, how do they collect CPD points?

A Landscape Architect who is practicing outside Klang Valley or abroad can collect CPD points by attending any talks organised by professional bodies such as PAM, MGBC, IPDM, GBI and IFLA. 40% of the CPD points can be collected from non-ILAM activities. The remaining 60% have to be collected from ILAM activities such as attending talks, seminars, conferences, general meetings, the ILAM dinner, Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards MLAA, publishing journals in ILAM publications. Helping to organise a talk in your region will also compensate you with the equivalent points for your efforts.
For those who are practicing abroad and find it hard to collect points, as the local association does not actively organise talks or seminars, what are the alternatives? For Landscape Architects who are working abroad and have difficulties in attending any talk, course or activity in their respective country, he/she can write directly to ILAM and explain the situation that he/ she is facing. The ILAM CPD Committee will discuss and, if it is valid, he/she can be exempted from collecting CPD points while stationed or working in the respective countries. Upon return to Malaysia, the individual will have to resume CPD training and collect the required points.
How many points are needed each year? The total credit points per year that must be accumulated by a Landscape Architect in the preceding year to be eligible to submit an application for renewal of registration are as follows:• A minimum of ten (10) CPD credit points for Registered Landscape Architects (Corporate Members). • A minimum of five (5) CPD credit points for Graduate Landscape Architects. • A minimum of five (5) CPD credit points for Registered Landscape Architects between the ages of 55 to 60 years. Unless given prior approval by ILAM, renewal of registration will not be considered in the event of a failure to fulfil the above requirements.
Who are exempt from this CPD Programme? The following categories of Landscape Architects are exempt from the CPD Programme:• Above age of 60 years old • Past President of ILAM • Senior Government Officers or Elected Representatives to the State Legislative Assembly or Parliament of Malaysia • Fellow Members of ILAM. Application for exemption must be made to ILAM before 31st December of the year preceding the application for renewal of registration.
Is it important to maintain personal records of CPD? Yes, it is essential to always keep a record or proof of courses or activities attended in the form of documents or certificates, etc. From time to time, ILAM may request the Landscape Architect to provide evidence of their participation in CPD events.
How to submit my CPD points? A Landscape Architect must submit their CPD records, together with his/her application for renewal of registration with ILAM each year. Applicants must complete and submit the ‘CPD Submission Form’ together with all supporting documents for ILAM’s verification and approval. An application for renewal of registration will not be approved if the applicant does not comply with the CPD requirements, unless ILAM has approved such non-compliance.
Can I carry forward excess credit points? Can any non-member of ILAM be granted CPD Points? Any party other than ILAM members who wishes to organise or participate in any ILAM CPD events with the intention of obtaining ‘CPD credit points’ must apply in writing to ILAM for accreditation at least two (2) months before the proposed date of the event. ILAM will decide on the number of credit points to be given. The qualifying events should focus on topics related to the core skills and knowledge of the Landscape Architecture profession including topics which enhance knowledge development as stated by ILAM CPD guidelines.
Only Registered Landscape Architects who have recorded excess CPD credit points may carry forward such excess credit points to the subsequent year, subject to a maximum of five (5) CPD credit points. Landscape Architects, who intend to carry forward their excess credit points, must submit to ILAM their current and previous year’s CPD records for verification. *Subject to terms and conditions.
What is ILAM’s action against false declaration? ILAM may revoke registration of any Landscape Architect if the approval for renewal of registration was obtained by means of false declaration regarding CPD requirements.

Ask people on the street about landscape architecture and landscape architects and you will most likely observe a puzzled or blank look on their faces. After more than 30 years of landscape architecture reaching our shores from abroad, people know more about landscape or “landskap” than the actual field and profession and what we can offer. One of these great opportunities that I feel that we have missed is engaging the public. By Prof. LAr. Dr. Mustafa Kamal bin Mohd Shariff (ILAM Fellow)
The public not only need landscape architect services – more importantly they need landscape architect leadership in their communities. Just look at our neighbourhoods. There are issues of cleanliness and hygiene, crime and under maintained neighbourhood parks with unimaginative and damaged equipment putting innocent children at risk. No one feels the responsibility nor puts in any effort in the neighbourhood. And if you take the time to ask the people you meet, they will tell you about the failure of the local authorities and their contractors to maintain their neighbourhoods. What has happened to the people themselves? Have we completely lost the power to determine what kind of environment we live in and how to live safely within it? I think we have lost the ability to determine our lives by surrendering too much to others i.e. the authorities. So it is no wonder that we hear more and more social problems are happening in our neighborhoods and country. The public seems to have lost the ability to empower themselves. There seems to be a void in community leadership in our neighbourhoods.

How can we as landscape architects contribute in this important role?
To start with let us be familiar with the following terms – altruism, leadership, and outreach. Altruism has been defined as the unselfish regard or devotion to the welfare of others. And I like the leadership definition as a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal. Combine both terms and we have altruistic leadership which is described as guiding others with the ultimate goal of improving their wellness. And what about the term “outreach”? Outreach is a systematic attempt to provide services beyond conventional limits. Unlike promotion or marketing, outreach is driven by two-way engagement and is not driven for immediate outcomes, but rather creating and maintaining mutually beneficial, sustainable, honest and appropriate relationships. The above terms open up unlimited opportunities for landscape architects to engage the public, ranging from ordinary people to national leaders. In the process to become altruistic leaders, through our outreach programmes, we not only make ourselves and the landscape architectural services better known and understood but we also have the ability to reach a wider range of potential clients requiring our services. Thus, being an altruistic leader provides landscape architects and local community and neighbourhood members with a win-win situation.
77 Opportunities to take on altruistic leadership roles can be fostered among landscape architects through various ways. Amongst them would be:• Working with schools and universities, polytechnics, and community colleges. •
Working with neighbourhood groups where the landscape architecture practice is located or a Landscape Architect is a resident.
•
Training on community work and community leadership can be provided by universities and form part of the CPD for landscape architects. (Courses and workshops).
•
Engaging university students to provide community based design projects with leadership provided by practicing firms.
•
Form Community Outreach Groups (COGs) in ILAM, landscape architecture departments in universities and in firms and companies.
•
ILAM could invite communities to submit applications for an annual community project as an extension of its MLAA event. Provide criteria such as community willingness to provide leadership, fund, manpower, etc. while ILAM participating organizations (firms and universities) can provide advice on design, construction, and maintenance.
•
Higher education institutions should make it mandatory for landscape architecture students to be involved in community landscape design or implementation work before graduation.

How do we become to be altruistic leaders? Many studies have pointed out that not everyone is born an altruistic leader yet everyone can learn to be one. Some initial steps could be:•
Help your neighbours by using your knowledge of design, plants, soils, pest and diseases, etc.
•
Volunteer your skills in religious institutions such as mosques, churches, temples, gudwaras, etc.
•
Volunteer to give talks to social institutions like clubs and associations.
•
Organise landscape units in community/neighbourhood groups such as resident associations, “rukun tetangga” units, etc.
•
Offer your skills to help our children’s schools and PTA’s.
Is altruistic leadership new among landscape architects? Perhaps it is in this country but our colleagues elsewhere have been doing this all along and reaping many benefits from it. A report on the internet, for instance, mentioned that: “The Boston Globe recently reported on the Community Outreach Group for Landscape Design (COGdesign) in Waltham, Mass., a western suburb of Boston, which pairs volunteers (pro bono) landscape designers with community groups who pay an application fee and reimburse the designers’ expenses. Many of the designers are students or recent graduates from landscape programs. Their motivation is getting real-world community design experience and to add to their portfolios.” (please refer http://www.cogdesign.org/)

MLAA 2011 - LIST OF WINNERS
Each year, ILAM presents the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards to outstanding Malaysian landscape architecture consultancy firms, developers and government agencies for projects completed in Malaysia and abroad. The Awards honour the best in landscape architecture from various aspects of the industry. The awards are open to all project submissions completed before or during the previous year and which have not received any award from ILAM. The nominees enjoy coverage in the media, are included in a special publication, the Landscape Architecture Malaysia Yearbook and can be seen in a special 20 page supplement in the New Straits Times on 8 April 2012. Nominees are invited to a prestigious award ceremony, held during ILAM’s annual dinner, on 7 April 2012 at the Royale Chulan Kuala Lumpur. The evening is also part of ILAM’s celebrations for World Landscape Architecture Month, observed in April each year.

Taman Wetland Putrajaya Taman Wetland Putrajaya is the largest man-made wetlands in the tropics covering an area of 400 hectares, creating 38 kilometers of shoreline located at Precinct 13, Putrajaya. The wetlands are also a wildlife sanctuary which attract a huge variety of animals to the combined terrestrial-aquatic environment. This wetlands acts as a Buffer Zone which means a water area surrounded by land before it flows into the wetland area. It also acts as a water catchment zone which is a plain boundary between the Buffer Zone & Wetlands proper. Putrajaya Wetlands also works as a water filtration system useful in controlling the ecological environmental systems and green zones which are attractive to wildlife.

Philea Resort & Spa Philea Resort & Spa, Melaka, is the first and largest log cabin resort in Malaysia. The 11 acre area consists of 66 units of log houses with 180 rooms, 19 suites and 2 villas. The site is located in a charming valley, complete with a multi-tiered terrain, surrounded by an existing rubber estate. As a result, the project was designed to flow seamlessly alongside the undulating contours of the land. Water elements abound in the center of the site due to the existing nearby creek. As well as being a natural feature, the stream’s other purpose is to harness the ground water and manage the overflow discharge during times of heavy water flow. The selection of finishes and materials played an important role in creating the design intention, which is a more rural feel. Natural elements which blend with the natural setting of the environment have been carefully placed in the creation of the hardscape elements.

Taylor Lakeside Campus is designed to set a new paradigm to reflect the latest thinking in education and a new benchmark for modern and urban campus buildings in Malaysia. The site covers 27 acres of tropical greenery set amidst the Subang Jaya neighbourhood. It is unique because of the 5.5 acre natural lake which becomes the central feature for the campus design, all of which was founded on ecological principles. The landscape concept transforms the campus into a social space and a nurturing ground for an energetic student community. All the landscape features were designed to demonstrate the success of a sustainable campus. In terms of well being, the landscape helps to enhance indoor and outdoor air quality, visual comfort and provide a natural soothing environment for students, users and visitors.

Within 1,200 acres of undulating terrain, the Horizon Hills landscape concept emphasises the magnificence of the vast spaces on offer and provides an exuberant landscape concept which enhances the rippling profile of the land. It is a tribute to the adage, “less is more”. With continuous swathes of land which rise and fall, every turn is an opportunity for a panoramic view. As such, homes are planned to adorn the best vantage points in order to maximize the views of the golf course and its landscaping. Subtle plantings which frame the rolling hills pay homage to the dramatic shape of the land; emphasising the broad vistas, which are unique to this development.

Laman Kasturi

Laman Kasturi is part of Bangunan Sultan Ismail (BSI), Kota Iskandar. The size of the area is approximately 1.1 acres. The ‘laman’ and the building itself are located within a strategic location known as Kota Iskandar or the Johor State Administrative Centre. Laman Kasturi was designed to provide a green area amidst the buildings. It aims to emphasise the Islamic elements of the Johor Malay concept garden. Laman Kasturi promotes and highlights the history and culture of Johor. The creation of a formal Islamic garden in a tropical setting is a representation of heaven on earth. The layout is based on intersecting channels of water forming four quadrants. This idea is based on the ancient cosmological idea that the universe consisted of four quadrants, divided by two great rivers, as described in the Garden of Eden.

The landscape philosophy of the Residence@Southbay is based on a single drop of water, signifying the developer’s initial steps into this piece of land, perpetually increasing with the growing ripples from the first drop. The fluid form of a drop of water is conceptually applied in the overall landscape design approach. While the houses in this project represent the solid, masculine or “Yang” side of the design, the landscape features in this project echo the soft and feminine or “Yin” side, akin to the flow of water, interconnecting the houses. The corporate colour of Red is incorporated into every nook and corner of the landscape features. The bold colour can be found on the dancing pot sculptures along the poolside, on rattan balls underneath the Club House staircase, on light boxes at open space areas, etc.

Originating from 6.65 acres of a manmade retention pond, this private residential park was designed against all odds in order to create its own identity and uniqueness by implementing Sunflower and Rose plantings. The design’s emphasis rests on the concept of eco-landscaping or the planned revitalization of designated areas. This idea also integrates and enriches human lifestyles while emphasising the appreciation of nature. The park’s approach is to use only organic substances for pest & disease control, reusing water from the pond to irrigate the plants & turf, using only energy saving LED bulbs for landscape lighting and recycling & reusing landscape waste as fertiliser after the composting process.

The park derives inspiration from the diverse historical elements of culturally-rich Hanoi and translates them into an experience where visitors are carried through a journey of both the traditional and contemporary. The park-scape is segmented into two key thematic zones; the Traditional Park at the south and the Cultural Gardens towards the east. These two themes are expressed through a continuous sequence of lushly landscaped spaces along the banks of the rejuvenated lakes and take full advantage of the lake views and waterfront. The design dramatically reforms the greens and lakes while retaining the existing natural attributes such as the lake edge, lake sizes and re-using the 2000 existing matured trees on site. The green network, 3km long, consists of a series of design features, activity nodes, special park amenities and tourist attractions.

Al-Bukhary Complex comprises of Al-Bukhary International University (AIU) campus, Al-Bukhary Mosque, a Cemetery, Al-Bukhary Hospital and Dialysis Centre, an Orphanage and Senior Citizen Academy as well as Al-Bukhary Souq or alternatively a Commercial Complex. With various land uses present within Al-Bukhary Complex, the landscape’s role is to pull together all the elements into an integrated identifiable development. Hence, the Landscape Master Plan for Al-Bukhary Complex is based on education and sustainability.

Twin Palms Kemensah Playpark Official Entrant: Linear Landscape Sdn. Bhd.
Extending across 30 acres at the foothills of Bukit Tabur are the CUBIST Bungalows of Twin Palms, Kemensah. The project aims to create an entrance that is influenced by the surrounding natural environment, is well shaded and connects each residence with green spaces and an open lawn as a play area. The park is created to ease access from the road side and from the backyard of the houses and, as a result, the green spaces blend visually with the slope, the nearby road and surrounding elements. The play park is a landform-based design which carves out intimate garden spaces and corresponds to the existing site that forms an iconic land sculpture. The green spaces are decorated with a cascading water feature, an oval walkway and plaza with playground, and even fitness stops for the convenience of the residents.

The CUBIST show unit of Twin Palms, Kemensah, is a 6000sq ft bungalow. Due to the bungalow being built to its maximum boundary, creating a green space was crucial at the corner of the unit, which lacked direct sunlight. Hence the design of the garden utilised each space and emphasis was on maximising the view from outside. Trees and shrubs were planted at the window or door to provide a visual treat to the dwellers, while at the same time create much needed privacy.

The site is a pre-existing, semi-detached residence with an area of approximately 400sqm, located 4km from the city centre. The project brief was to refurbish the site and present a new image with a resort style ambiance. In order to achieve this aim, a forest style, densely planted landscape was created due to the client’s love of “forest” and nature. The design provides the residence with massive groups of plantings yet ensures ease of maintenance.

Sunway Vivaldi, a luxury and large-scale residential project sitting on a freehold site in Mont’ Kiara, Kuala Lumpur, features a spacious living environment. This design provides the opportunity for living a contemporary lifestyle in a lush and tranquil environment. Green Landscaping methodology was introduced to create a green environment with the introduction of vertical green walls, a conscious selection of appropriate plants, water efficiency and conservation, and the use of resources to blend the landscape into the natural world and to enrich the biodiversity of the surrounding ecosystem.

Bayswater Condominium Official Entrant: Landart Design Sdn. Bhd.
Bayswater project is taking its lead to be the pioneer in urbanised concept living in Penang, with the introduction of the ICT Smart Home system. This urban living concept is further carried to outdoor landscape areas. Sophisticated, simple, neat and clean urban resort landscape design is the main theme concept for this entire project. In order to further enrich urban living, a metaphor of the ‘barcode’ design was introduced as a primary design element. The landscaped central courtyard was carefully designed and planned to reflect this identity. Basic element of stripes, lines and grid systems were used in the arrangement of the walkways, stepping steps, pool deck, and shelters to reinforce the theme with a strong visual impact. This barcode identity is then fully carried out in the arrangement of the main swimming pool base tiles, with the use of dark blue colour mosaics and light blue and white colour mosaics in lines, which create a dramatic aerial view from above.

Spacious and thoughtfully designed with a modern tropical concept, Suasana Bangsar provides lavish facilities which include a look-out pavilion, poolside decks, a swimming pool with infinity pond, barbeque pits, a jacuzzi, a reflexology area and a stunning children’s playground. These recreational facilities incorporate a subtle blend of elegance and style with superior craftsmanship and finishes to create a modern and relaxing environment for residents.

As this project is about creating a holiday seaside retreat for summer activities, the water element has been adopted as the main theme in order to complement the sea view context.

The Therapeutic Garden was created to serve the needs of the community: physically, psychologically, socially and spiritually. This flat landform was well-suited for designing much needed greenery for all ages and cross sections of the community. The rejuvenated garden emphasise the therapy element which consists of activities to cater to the needs of various users via a unique blend of hardscapes and softscapes. The garden is divided into three areas: the Play Area with green foliage focuses on activities for youth and children. The Open Plaza, with flowering plants focuses on semi-activities for youths and adults. Lastly, the Therapy Area with scented plants focuses on the elderly.

The emphasis of the restoration master plan was to clean and rejuvenate the existing solid waste dumping site, followed by reclaiming activities which would promote the proliferation of a healthy, safe and sustainable living environment. The concept of sustainability here is to ensure the long-term maintenance of well-being, which has environmental, economic and social dimensions and encompasses the concept of stewardship, and the responsible management of resources.

ilam update Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards 2011 Competition Judging and Site Inspection Date: 13-15 January 2012 & 11 February 2012 The judging of the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards MLAA 2011 was held at the ILAM office from 13-15 January 2011. The jury panel consisted of 5 members from various aspects of landscape architecture, namely Assoc. Prof. LAr. Zainul Hakim Mohd. Zain (lead Judge), Dato’ LAr. Ismail Ngah, LAr. Hjh. Rotina Mohd Daik, LAr. Nurulhuda Hayati Ibrahim, LAr. Dr. Nor Atiah Ismail. The judging process took 2 full days to complete. On 11 February 2012, a separate session was carried out - site visits to inspect the finalists for the MLAA Excellence Awards. It was attended by MLAA Jurors and ILAM Council Members.

International Seminar on Sustainable Tropical Environmental Design (SusTED’11) Date: 17-18 January 2012 | Venue: Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) The International Seminar on Sustainable Tropical Environmental Design or SusTED’11 was held at the Faculty of Design and Architecture, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in Serdang, Selangor from 17-18 January, 2012. This year’s theme was “Nature By Design” and focussed on issues related to having nature amidst urban development. This year’s seminar was attended by several outstanding international speakers who shared various issues and topics related to the seminar’s theme. The speakers included Prof. Dr. Richard Hyde (Architecture/ Australia), Dr. Soehartini (Landscape Architecture/Indonesia), Mr Vincent Assalin (Landscape Architecture/Canada), Dato’ Dr. Dolbani Mijan(Town Planning/Malaysia), and Prof. Dr. Ho Chin Siong (Planning/Malaysia).
Assembly of Landscape Architecture Students (ALAM) 2012 Date: 11-14 February 2012 | Venue: Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) This annual programme was held at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Shah Alam and was attended by more than 200 students from various universities and colleges in Malaysia which offer Landscape Architecture courses. This 4 day event, supported by ILAM, was held from 11-14 February 2012 and consisted of various activities and social gatherings such as “Alfresco Round Table”, “Green Patch-up” and “Shooting Stars”. Participants can look forward to another exciting ALAM assembly next year at Kolej RISDA, Melaka Campus.

ILAM EGM 2012 Date: 25 February 2012 Venue: ILAM Office An Extraordinary General Meeting was held in the ILAM office on 25 February 2012 which was attended by 37 Corporate Members. Among the highlights of the EGM was the presentation, discussion and approval of the ILAM CPD Programme, amendments to the ILAM Code of Ethics and issues related to ILAM Fellowship.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Programme The trial session of the ILAM CPD program began in March 2012, with full implementation starting from January 2013. All Landscape Architects (ILAM Corporate and Graduate members) are required to participate and maintain good records of their participation. All renewals of registration with ILAM, starting from the year 2014 onwards, must include evidence that members have undertaken and accumulated the required minimum CPD credit points from 2013. To know more about CPD, please read the special CPD section in this issue.

Ismawi Zen), Convert Tacit Knowledge to PhD (Prof Madya LAr. Ismail Said (PhD). This first Lecture Series was attended by 40 participants.

An expedition group, consisting of 40 ILAM members and friends, spent 3 days at the stunning Belum-Temengor Rainforest Complex. This event was hosted by the Belum Rainforest Resort and supported by EMKAY Group, Pulau Banding Foundation and EMKAY Foundation. The expedition drew local TV and print media attention as a 30 Species Native Tree Planting Ceremony was held, along with the help of the local aborigine children. Participants were also witness to the signing of an MoU of Research between ILAM and Pulau Banding Foundation. The group was afforded the opportunity to explore this most beautiful of Mother Nature’s jewels and gained a first-hand experience with the Rafflesia and Lantern Bugs. A visit to the aborigine village at Sungai Chueh with the distribution of snacks and health drinks to the locals brought cheer to the community. This expedition was organised to celebrate 30 years of the Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia (ILAM), National Landscape Month, World Landscape Architecture Month and World Forestry Day.

Workshop on National Landscape Policy Action Plan Framework Date: 27-29 March 2012 | Venue: Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan A special workshop, organised by the National Landscape Department (JLN), was held at Port Dickson from 27-29 March 2012. This gathering was aimed at formulating the action plan framework for the newly launched National Landscape Policy. ILAM was represented by Council Member, LAr. Zainuddin Ya.

ILAM 30 Years Gala Dinner Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards (MLAA) Date: 7 April 2012 | Venue: Royale Chulan Kuala Lumpur The ILAM 30 Years Gala Dinner and the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards (MLAA) were held in conjunction with the celebration of the 30th anniversary of ILAM and the World Landscape Architecture Month in April. The event, held at the Royale Chulan Kuala Lumpur saw more than 500 guests attending this special evening. Among the guests of honour representing the Minister of Works Malaysia was the Secretary General, Datuk Himmat Singh. With the theme “Akar Umbi”, the dinner spread the message about the importance of learning from our history and culture in order to develop in the future. With the cooling and serene colour scheme of purples and blues, the grand ballroom was filled with a cheerful ambiance. Special entertainment was provided by a traditional Gamelan orchestra and local song birds, Ayu and Nora. Numerous MLAA Awards were presented in different categories throughout the evening - from Professional Landscape Architects to Local Governments and Developers. The details of the award winning projects can be found in the special MLAA section of this issue. In addition to the nominated professional projects, ILAM Academic Awards were presented to university students who had performed well in the study of Landscape Architecture. Thanks to the NST and the winners of the MLAAs who made this supplement a reality.
Special Interview in AWANI “IN Realty” Date: 3 May 2012 | Venue: ILAM Office “IN Realty” is a special programme, currently in production, airing on Astro Awani. It focusses on issues surrounding property matters in Malaysia today. The last ten to fifteen years, especially in the Asia Pacific Region, have seen an amazing transformation of the world in which we live. Nowhere on Earth has this transformation been as marked as in China, and other parts of our region are undergoing the same sorts of changes. This Congress will examine such issues, among others, and will aim to present examples of and solutions to creating “Better Landscapes, Better Lives” throughout our region.
