Salam Sejahtera to all our readers, from the Bulletin Landscape editorial table. You are currently reading the 24th issue of Bulletin Landskap and, particularly at this time of the year, we are celebrating National Landscape Day on 3rd of March, and the World Landscape Architecture Month in April. At ILAM, we have lined up various exciting events such as the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards and ILAM Gala Night and other fringe activities such as the Sri Lanka Landscape Heritage Tour, One Utama Secret Garden Tour to name a few. As in every year, in the first quarter of the year, we celebrate the best of the best in landscape industry with our annual awards gala night. This issue, we will focus on highlighting the trend of landscape architectural design as observed from the latest award submissions of the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards (MLAA). This will set the outlook for the design trends that shape our industry. In 2017, we also plan various activities from several ILAM chapters, such as community programmes, and also landscape architecture dialogue as part of Kuala Lumpur Design Month activities, in October, 2017. Not to forget the IFLA Asia Pacific Congress 2017 will be happening from 2-5 November 2017, in Bangkok, and we will also be also organising the Bangkok Green Quest 02. Please follow our website closely to get the latest updates. To show our forward thinking, we are currently organising various workshops to formulate the future landscape architecture direction for the next 33 years. This initiative will be launched on 22 April 2017 during the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards MLAA Gala Night. Stay tuned! Landscape Architecture Trends
Landscape design trends evolve over time, in line with human needs, technology, and style. Each year, the submissions for the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards (MLAA), are an indicator of the latest trends, which are shaping our identity. Listed below are the 10 trends for 2017.

01 Holistic Living System This type of design serves as a total living system for organisms such as wildlife, plants and humans alike. This system exemplifies sustainability within a development, with each component complimenting the next.

02 Rediscovering Memories Memories of a bygone era; images of quiet villages, lush gardens and natural environments from our childhood are now reflected in landscape design components, creating a nostalgic twist to new designs.

BANGKOK GREEN QUEST PTT METRO FOREST
7-9 DECEMBER 2016
THE QUEST FOR IDEAS Bangkok Green Quest is ILAM’s first Bangkok Landscape Technical Study trip. This event featured landscape design works from various young Thai landscape architects. The visits exposed the participants to several completed projects alongside face to face interaction with local landscape architects from Shma Soen, Trop Design and LAB. A total of 42 ILAM Members joined the programme. On day one, the participants completed site visits to Shera Concept Home, Lopburi Sunflower Field, Palio Khao Yai and Ming Mongkol Green Park. The second day focused on professionally designed projects of local young landscape architects such as Ideo Q Chula-Samyan by Trop Design, PTT Metro Forest by Landscape Architects Bangkok (LAB) and Community Sport Park “Lankilar Pat 1” by Shma Soen. The third day was a visit to the flower gardens at Khao Yai – Dasada Flower Gardens and Resort. Some of the highlights of the visit were: MING MONGKOL GREEN PARK

SHERA FACTORY VISITS
This is a CSR project by Siam City Cement to create a social & ecologically sustainable environment, on deteriorated orchard land, along the Mittraphap highway at Thap Kwang, Khang Khoi, Saraburi Province. The objective is to design an environmental educational and awareness space and also serve as a meeting place for locals and tourists alike. The garden is designed with a blend of rest area facilities such as toilets, coffee shop, shops, both permanent and temporary local produce vendors, all situated in the park-like atmosphere surrounded by herbal gardens and vernacular landscape.

PTT Metro Forest Landscape Architects Bangkok (LAB) Located at the eastern fringes of Bangkok in the suburban district of Prawet, approximately 6 kilometers from the Suvarnabhumi International Airport, lies the Metro-Forest Project. An ecological regeneration project designed as an outdoor exhibition space to cultivate environmental awareness and educate visitors about local forest ecology. Ideo Q Chula-Samyan Trop Design This commercial/condominium project cleverly uses curved lines and shapes to form the landscape space concept. The front plaza is formed by a series of curved lines and irregular shapes, embedded in the multi-level ground. The vast reflection pool forms the main feature of the landscape, punctuated by trees. The landscape concept expands towards the rear garden in a terrace form. On the podium level, the pool design concept also adopts the concept of curves and irregular shapes to form terrain and levels which complement the architectural form.

Community Sport Park “Lankilar Pat 1� Shma Soen Shma Soen is the social enterprising arm of Shma Designs, one of the leading landscape architecture firms in Thailand. The organisation focuses on community driven projects such as upgrading neighbourhood spaces with community participation in the design process. As a result, the park promotes local pride and respect for communal spaces.

Khao Yai Located within the vicinity of Khao Yai National Park, the beautiful flower gardens and resort of Dasada has been built as a semi-public space with flower themed attractions and exhibits, a musical fountain, a luxury resort and also cut flowers such as Anthurium and Phalaenopsis. The visit was hosted by the master planner/ landscape architect, Mr. Thanapon. The participants were informed about the history, design and branding of the resort during a briefing, followed by lunch and visits to the garden’s attractions.

The ILAM Graduate Members came together under one roof to voice their views and opinions about the profession. The session also provided a platform for members to share opinions for improvement. A get together programme to celebrate Malaysia Day was also held after the forum to celebrate our diversity as Malaysians.
LAr. Mohd Fadrillah Mohd Tahir attended a briefing on the new theme Bamboo Garden within the Taman Botani Putrajaya, which will be the new attraction of the park. The briefing was conducted by Malaysia Bamboo Society alongside Perbadanan Putrajaya.
A pre-technical planning trip was conducted with 13 ILAM council members and private individuals who visited potential landscape projects for the upcoming ILAM Technical Visits in Thailand in early December 2016. The group also made a courtesy call to Chulalongkorn University and Thai Association of Landscape Architects (TALA).

PAM Gold Medal is the highest honour awarded by Persatuan Arkitek Malaysia (PAM), and recognises lifetime achievement in architecture by Malaysian architects whose careers have endowed the profession with great distinction and have promoted the advancement of architecture, both in Malaysia and Internationally. This black tie event was attended by ILAM President, Assoc Prof. LAr. Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir and ILAM Fellow/BIM President, Dato’ LAr. Ismail Ngah.
Following the endorsement by members via ILAM AGM in June, the ILAM chapter committees met at the ILAM office for a briefing about the formation of Chapter by Law. This meeting discussed the concept of chapter by law, guidelines, and CPD events. The meeting equipped the chapter representatives with information which is to be tabled at the respective chapter meetings.

A special focus group encompassing several professional bodies was conducted by Khazanah Nasional Berhad, to share the concept and master plan behind the development of the urban forest park, Taman Tugu. The park will serve as an urban forest linking the existing Perdana Botanical Gardens to various public transport hubs.
The MIP Awards for Planning Excellence aims to showcase projects and works which are able to respond to market needs, demonstrate the highest degree of skills in planning, create significant benefits to the public and take into consideration the local environment. ILAM was delighted with our jury representative, Assoc Prof. LAr. Dr. Mohd Ramzi Mohd Hussain.
The new and improved GBI Township Tool awareness talk, conducted by Ar. Serina Hijjas, gave an insight to fellow landscape architects and also served as a platform to discuss and improve the next version. Following on from the talk, ILAM members have formed several expertise groups to further provide feedback.

An informal meeting was held at the lobby of Parliament House, with Deputy Minister of Urban Well-being, Housing and Local Government (KPKT), YB Datuk Halimah binti Mohamed Sadique, regarding the Landscape Architects Bill and issues related to the landscape architecture profession in Malaysia as well as the collaboration between ILAM and KPKT, for future landscape development in Malaysia.
Norwegian Landscape Conference 21 October 2016 Oslo, Norway
ILAM Honorary Secretary, LAr. Dr. Nor Atiah Ismail represented ILAM and UPM at the Norwegian Landscape Conference held in Oslo. She also presented a paper to local landscape architects about the cultural landscape of Malaysia.
Koi Pond – Combining Aesthetics and Advanced Technology 27 October 2016 Waterco Sungai Buloh Office
Waterco, a manufacturer and distributer of a diverse range of products for koi ponds, swimming pools, and spa and water treatment markets, hosted a half day visit for ILAM members to the factory to further understand the products. Attended by 35 participants, the visit touched on the design and technical aspect of ponds.
IFLA Asia Pacific Council Meeting 2016 27-30 October 2016 Canberra, Australia
The 2016 International Festival of Landscape Architecture is taking place in Canberra, Australia’s capital city. The program includes the IFLA Asia Pacific Congress, a Short Film Competition, National Conference, National Landscape Architecture Awards and a host of public and industry tours, exhibitions, city activations, screenings and talks. This event was held in conjunction with the IFLA Asia Pacific Congress and IFLA Asia Pacific Council Meeting. ILAM Honorary Secretary, LAr. Dr. Nor Atiah Ismail represented ILAM at this meeting.

ILAM Meets MIP
ILAM Southern Chapter Chairman, LAr. Mohd Zai Kandar, was invited to be the head juror of the state landscape competition at the annual Johor Landscape Day 2016 celebrations. This programme showcased a close working relationship between ILAM Southern Chapter, National Landscape Department, Johor and local governments.
The Malaysia Green Building Confederation (MGBC) upholds its mission to promote green buildings for a sustainable built environment. The awards were presented to organisations which displayed exemplary leadership in promoting the green agenda and having projects which are fully completed and awarded final GBI certification. LAr. Sabarudin Buang attended the gala event.
ILAM CPD Committee made a courtesy call to the Malaysian Institute of Planners (MIP) and met with Pn. Khairiah Talha, to further understand the CPD programme development at MIP, and to ensure a closer working relationship between ILAM and MIP in future events. ILAM was represented by LAr. The symposium invited keynote speakers such as: Dr. Damian Tang, President of the International Federation of Landscape Architecture (IFLA); Prof. T. KPKT: Urban Wellbeing Carnival
ILAM Southern Chapter Professional Talk Series
ILAM was part of the Urban Wellbeing Carnival organised by the Ministry of Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government at Dataran Merdeka, as part of World Habitat Day celebrations. ILAM was among the organisations which exhibited at the carnival and gave the general public an insight into the profession.
In collaboration with the EARTH Society and ILAM Southern Chapter, a talk series was conducted with one of the speaker from ILAM/Alumni UTM, LAr. Phuan Ying Zee, who shared her experience on the River of Life Kuala Lumpur project. The talk was attended by UTM students and ILAM Southern Chapter members.

The French Chamber of Commerce and Industry (French CCI), called for a meeting with ILAM to discuss the partnership in the upcoming Piscine Asia, a 2-day conference and trade exhibition about swimming pools and spas, in Singapore, from 5-6 April 2017. LAr. Dr. Suhardi Maulan, and LAr. Dr. Nor Atiah Ismail, were among those who attended the meeting. As a result, ILAM agreed to be part of this internationally acclaimed exhibition in Singapore, with the promise of CPD points given to members who attend.

A product knowledge sharing session, organised by Landscape Architecture Department and EARTH, Fakulti Alam Bina, UTM, in collaboration with the ILAM Southern Chapter and Asia Turfquip Supplies (M) Sdn. Bhd., focused on products such as irrigation systems and design, green walls, and xerigation. Over 30 participants attended this half day event.

FRSB 20th Anniversary Closing Ceremony

An EGM was called to hold a discussion and receive consent from the members on two matters, namely, Chapter by Law, and establishment of ILAM’s registered company. The meeting received full support from the members to proceed with the two issues discussed.
A closing ceremony was held to conclude a year-long celebration of the 20 th anniversary, and numerous achievements of the Faculty of Design and Architecture, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). During the ceremony, the best achievements of the faculty were highlighted, which included the launching of the coffee table book, “35 Landscape Architect Entrepreneurs Prominent Landscape Architect Alumni”.
This year, the theme “the Art of Dimension” was the discussion topic for the LAMPU Forum, which was held in conjunction with the Putrajaya Light and Motion Festival (LAMPU). LAr. Danial A. Hasan attended this event.

Majlis Bandaraya, Ipoh, hosted a landscape product sharing session to the members of ILAM after winning the MLAA Excellence Award 2015 for Government Category. The product is a tree tagging system, which uses GPS, for efficient tree inventory and management. The talk attracted more than 40 participants.

Discussion on USM Landscape Architecture Program Recognition 7 January 2017 ILAM@ALAMi
A courtesy visit by the Dean and members of the School of Housing, Building and Planning USM was conducted to discuss the ILAM recognition procedure for landscape architecture programs, and other related issues regarding the landscape architecture profession. USM was represented by the Dean of the faculty, Prof. Dr. Aldrin Abdullah, with ILAM members, Assoc. Prof. LAr. Jamel Ariffin and LAr. Nor A’zam Shuib.
Urban Environmental Accords (UEA) Melaka Summit Collaboration Meeting
ALAM 8 – The Assembly of Landscape Architecture Students Malaysia
Majlis Perbandaran Alor Gajah made a courtesy call to ILAM to discuss a collaboration with ILAM to organise the Urban Environmental Accords (UEA) Melaka Summit from 7-9 September 2017. The delegates exchanged souvenirs at the end of the session.
This annual event came to its 8 th edition. This time, it was hosted by Univeriti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), and the Landscape Architecture Society, with the theme of ‘Daripada Alam Kepada Alam’. The theme aims to promote a sense of responsibility among landscape architecture students to care for the environment for generations to come. The programme was officiated by ILAM President, Assoc Prof LAr. Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir. The assembly provided a platform for landscape architecture students from the higher learning institutions to meet and exchange ideas.

Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards MLAA2016 Judging Session 20-21 January 2017 ILAM@ALAMi
A two-day judging process was conducted to judge the total of 145 submissions for this year’s MLAA Awards. The jury session consisted of 8 landscape architects, going through the initial shortlisting process, followed by a jury session, steered by 10 local and international judges. The jury session concluded with result recommendations for ILAM Council endorsement. Selected projects site visit was held on 14-15 February 2017 to determine top award winners.

CPD POINTS & MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL Starts Jan 2017
DO YOU HAVE SUFFICIENT CPD POINTS?
Since 2012, ILAM has introduced the CPD point requirements to be fully implemented by January 2014 for renewal of membership. The requirements are as below: • Graduate Member: 5 points annually • Corporate Member: 10 points annually • Corporate Member (55-60 years old): 5 points annually In order to build up the CPD awareness, ILAM CPD Committee has suggested the trial period of 3 years (2014, 2015 and 2016). However, by the beginning of January 2017, member are requested to have sufficient points for the past 3 years (total 30 points) in order to renew the membership in January 2017.
