Salam Sejahtera everyone! Here we are with another edition of Bulletin Landskap. April was a busy month as many nations celebrated World Landscape Architecture Month, while in Malaysia we held our annual Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards (MLAA) and Gala Night, which honoured the best in local and international landscape architectural practice. The annual Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards (MLAA) were witness to overwhelming support from various related industries, besides landscape architecture. Government sectors, developers, researchers and students were among those receiving awards this year and the event was attended by 600 guests - among the highest numbers ever achieved. In this issue, we will showcase the winners of MLAA2012 and, for those who wish to have a keepsake of this year’s submissions, please contact ILAM to order your copy of the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Yearbook 2012. Continuing in this vein, we would like to take this opportunity to announce that MLAA2013 is now open for submissions and we welcome qualified entrants to submit projects before 1 November, 2013. Please find more information within this issue of Bulletin Landskap. On the international front, leading up to the year 2020, ILAM has more exciting events planned as part of the nation’s Wawasan 2020 celebrations. I can now announce, with great pride, that we have been selected, by IFLA, as the host for the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) World Congress 2020. This momentous occasion will be held during our National Day celebration month in that year and we promise a meaningful, fun-filled and memorable experience for all delegates and guests. Not to be outdone, the ILAM annual conference “Sustainable Landscape Asia” will be hosted by Perbadanan Putrajaya from 2-3 October 2013 with the best presenters speaking about sustainable technology, design and management. Please visit our website www.ilamalaysia.org for more details. We hope you enjoy this issue and continue to support the activities that we have planned for you and our profession. Thank you.

kayangan heights inspired by the beauty of nature

The recent Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards 2012 crowned several entries and among the top winners in the Developer Category was Kayangan Heights, which stood out amongst the rest, due to its green township planning which marries nature with luxury living.

Kayangan Heights is an exclusive low-density, guarded bungalow development which comprises 166.74 ha of pristine tropical rainforest. Located far away from the hustle and bustle of city life, situated in an exclusive haven on the outskirts of Shah Alam, this low density residential development, complete with tropical forest landscape details, is spread across a stunning natural environment with several precinct of bungalows. Teratai Villas, Kenanga Woods and Begonia Crescent were all built in harmony with the contours of the land and are guarded with the latest security surveillance equipment and manpower.

Inspired by the Beauty of Nature Each of the facilities and development parcels are designed to maximize a green experience. Either along the driveway or in the residential plots, visitors are surrounded by natural green spaces. Quiet streams, a pristine lake and lush meadows are among the elements one can spy throughout Kayangan Heights. Pathways, provided alongside the parkland, increase the presence of green connectors. Recreation facilities such as the club house are designed to incorporate the verdant backdrop of the forest, which is a spectacular sight when viewed against the terminus of the infinity pool.

9

Environment & Sustainability The Kayangan Heights development maintains and preserves the existing natural forest by carefully planning each building around the woods. Existing trees are protected by adjusting the building footprint within the design. To further enhance the built structures, climbers and shrubs are planted to cover pillars and posts and thereby increase greenery throughout the project. All the residential units are interconnected by greenways. Natural streams and footpaths have been further enhanced and upgraded to become a parkland for recreational purposes. Biodiversity is a crucial element considered during the planning and construction stages, as flora and fauna are interconnected and the destruction of one species will affect many others. Therefore, during the planning stage, experts and consultants were required to ensure that all nature surrounding and within the development remained as undisturbed as possible. This regard for nature in each part of Kayangan Heights demonstrates the strong commitment of Amcorp Prima Realty to protect the environment and should be an inspiration for other property developers in Malaysia.

Taman Sahabat Majlis Bandaraya Kuching Selatan The size of Taman Sahabat, or Friendship Park, in Kuching, Sarawak, is approximately 7 acres. The development of the park was jointly financed by the government, alongside contributions from the People’s Republic of China and sponsors from the private sectors, both in Kuching and China. The design of the park is divided into two coexisting yet independent sections; Malaysia Park and China Park. These two parks, much like the ancient yin and yang symbol of harmony, represent the friendship between Malaysia and China and are linked by a man-made lake. A vessel, complete with a statue of the Chinese Admiral, Zheng He, was built to symbolize this great man’s voyages of discovery and trade.

Ecohydrology Management of Lake and Wetland in Putrajaya Urban Ecosystem Perbadanan Putrajaya Perbadanan Putrajaya adopted the Ecohydrology Management approach to better manage the quality and quantity of surface run-off within the catchment areas of the massive, newly developed administrative city. Ecohydrology Management is based on the assumption that sustainable development of water resources is dependent on the ecosystem’s ability to restore and maintain the evolutionarily established process of water and nutrient circulation and energy flows, at the basin level. Amongst the most important approaches of this concept is the application of integrated management by stakeholders and activities which involves neighboring stakeholders in the catchment area. All possible sources of pollution within the catchment need to be understood, identified and defined in order to clearly undertake appropriate management and maintenance measures. The application of the ecohydrology concept using wetlands and lakes can be seen as a successful approach to pursue sustainability, by bringing nature back into the urban surrounding and benefiting communities.

Putrajaya Healthy Parks Healthy People, Putrajaya Inter-Parks Ride (PIPR) Perbadanan Putrajaya Putrajaya is equipped with various public facilities and parks meant to be used by its communities and visitors. Well-equipped with cycle lanes, pedestrian pathways, tree-lined streets and garden furniture, the landscape and parks of Putrajaya became an excellent venue for a cycling programme, named Putrajaya Inter-Parks Ride (PIPR). This programme was established in May 2010 to provide opportunities for the Putrajaya and neighbouring communities to come out to Putrajaya public parks and cycle for recreation, leisure and health, thus promoting a healthy lifestyle, initiating the “Healthy Parks, Healthy People” tag line. PIPR aims to address the issues of starting a healthy lifestyle through cycling activities while promoting nature education for people of all ages. PIPR is an event in which participants are given the opportunity to cycle in public parks and park-lined city streets. Participants have the opportunity to interact with nature, the flora and fauna throughout the cycling ‘exploration’ to discover the beauty of gardens and parks of Putrajaya.

Taman Botani Putrajaya Perbadanan Putrajaya Putrajaya Botanical Garden is designed as an arcadian plant sanctuary where living collections of plants, mainly from the botanical region of Malesiana, can be found. The living collection also consists of over 700 species of flowering plants from other geographical regions of the world within the Equatorial belt, including Asia Pacific, Africa and South America. Currently, the gardens carry a modest number of over 6,000 individuals of botanical significance as a living collection, with a herbarium collection of roughly 5,000 plant sheets, a carpological collection and a small wet collection. It is also supported by a handsome nursery complex, complete with quarantine facilities. As a botanical garden, Taman Botani Putrajaya serves to house botanical collections, to undertake conservation efforts, provide botanical education, become a prime recreation and park service to the public, and provide a must-visit tourism opportunity for Putrajaya. The garden features 12 thematic garden experiences, namely Explorers Trail, Palm Hill, Sun Garden, the Lakeside, Floral Garden, Fern Garden, Canna Walk, Heliconia Trail, Bougainvillea Tunnel, Orchid Path, Vine Garden, and Pandanus Walk. Taman Botani Putrajaya achieved international recognition when it was listed in ‘Paradise Found’ as one of the top 40 most beautiful parks in the world.

Community Gardens of Putrajaya

Perbadanan Putrajaya The Community Gardens Project is one the community participation, engagement and empowerment initiatives, under the Putrajaya Local Agenda 21 Programme. The first community garden of Putrajaya was started during early 2008 and officiated in October of the same year by the then Prime Minister of Malaysia, The Honorable Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, in response to the residents’ interest in vegetable gardening. The Perbadanan Putrajaya, in a facilitator role, fulfilled the local government responsibility of discharging duties of educating the community by introducing Community Garden Clinics. These clinics were conducted by the Master Gardeners of the Perbadanan Putrajaya Horticultural Division, together with the Department of Agriculture. The city also provides “hands-on” advisory services for problem-solving at site by visiting gardens at regular intervals to inspect gardening practices, check on pests and diseases and ensure successful food production. The way forward for the next 5 years for the Community Gardens of Putrajaya Project is to ensure sustainability of the project. The future direction for the community garden project at Putrajaya would be to increase community participation with greater engagement efforts to foster community empowerment.

Taman Pancarona Putrajaya

Perbadanan Putrajaya Taman Pancarona covers an area of 16.8 hectares with extensive plantings of multi-coloured foliage, tassels, flowers, fruits and berries, flowering trees and shrubs, all following the planting concept of “Shimmering Colours”, after the name, ‘Pancarona’. On weekends and at night, this park comes alive with sporting activities as it has comprehensive sports facilities akin to a mini sports complex with a half Olympic-sized football stadium, two futsal courts cum basketball courts, three volleyball courts, two netball and four “Sepak Takraw” courts. It also offers jogging tracks with strategically located resting gazebos and exercise stations. As part of the city’s essential components, this park offers plenty for the community of approximately 11,000 residents living in the high-rise apartments, adjacent to the park. It also offers a magnificent backdrop to the iconic buildings of the Core Island, creating a sense of integration between the urban built and natural built environments.

Damselfly and Geyser Creeks @ Setia Eco-Park

Serenity Park East Ledang Phase 1

Bandar Eco-Setia Sdn. Bhd.

UEM LAND

Damselfly & Geyser Creek, two man-made waterways, act as natural detention ponds in this development, yet have been upgraded and repurposed as a recreational park for residents. Damselfly & Geyser Creek were built with the intention to provide a space for recreational activities ideal for joggers, cyclists and pedestrians who wish to spend an afternoon strolling around the gardens. The creeks promote biodiversity with a variety of plantings which attract wildlife. With garden amenities such as benches, gazebos, a boardwalk and pergola along the garden walkway, it connects seamlessly with the community and is easily accessible from any direction. Damselfly Creek is named for the presence of the many damselflies in the area which indicates the unpolluted water quality of the creek. Located at the highest peak of the development, the garden offers pleasant views with gentle breezes.

Serenity Park is a themed garden residential development which provides a safe and spacious environment for its community members. The development’s emphasis on spaciousness is further evidenced by the application of the concept of garden living. The 31 gardens and open spaces make up more than 15% of the total acreage (the authority requirement is only 10%) while the density is reduced to a mere 2.7 units per acre, far below the industry norm of 10 units per acre. The 31 gardens, which spread over 7 parks spanning the development, make the grounds much more than a site for a home. Individually themed, the seven parks correspond to the 7 days in a week, while the 31 gardens relate to 31 days in a month. Each precious space provides residents of the development with a different garden theme to experience and enjoy every day of the month. The ‘green continuum’ concept integrates buildings and gardens through a continuous network of linear parks and open spaces. Residents experience easy access to all green areas, while at the same time enjoying lush, shaded and comfortable living.

Waterfalls of Setia Eco Cascadia

Cluster C2S Complex, Kota Iskandar, Nusajaya

Setia Indah Sdn. Bhd.

Cahaya Jauhar Sdn. Bhd.

The concept of Setia Eco Cascadia development is a simple, yet surprisingly novel approach. It is about eco-living in the heart of a city, which will certainly set the benchmark for all future developments in the region. This surprising development features water, in many forms, across the entire estate. With the preservation of the natural terrain, different levels provide vantage points for breathtaking panoramic views of the many surrounding waterfalls and ponds.

Located in the southern section of Kota Iskandar, the Cluster C2S state administrative office complex consists of a pair of buildings which front each other; namely the Bangunan Dato’ Mohamad Salleh Perang and the Bangunan Dato’ Muhamad Ibrahim Munsyi. The two buildings are separated by a central circular lawn, linked by a pedestrian walkway. They sit on a curvilinear footprint of approximately 22.4 acres and are surrounded by 19.7 acres of beautiful landscape. The selection of the plants at Cluster C2S Complex plays an important role in the preservation of threatened and endangered plants species for future generations. From the biodiversity enhancement aspect, the forest landscape has attracted birds, insects and small mammals. From the educational and social resources point of view, cluster C2S Complex is a good example of utilising a landscape area for research and education.

To maintain its eco-friendly nature, a bioswale, a unique ecologically-atuned facility which filters rainwater before discharging it into the drainage system, is incorporated into the design. Water from upper level ponds cascades over 12 metre high majestic waterfalls and, along the 60 metre wide terrain, the water, rushing over different sections of the stunning rock-work, imitates nature at its best. The crashing water then flows into the main lake where, together with the waterfall, a grand and luscious entrance is created for residents and visitors. The drama and power of this stunning piece never fails to invite people to bask in its cool, refreshing beauty. Setia Eco Cascadia is a green wonderland where cascading landscapes are the key element, literally bringing a breath of fresh air to modern living.

Zephyrpoint @ Basong Damansara Heights

Hillvista Condominium Singapore

Walrus Design Sdn. Bhd.

OTLA Design Partnership

Zephyrpoint@Basong is a low-density, high-end residential development, located at Lorong Basong, Damansara Heights, Kuala Lumpur. The development, consisting of 4 units of Garden Villas & 3 unit apartments, includes car park facilities, a gym, a swimming pool & other common areas such as a business centre & management offices, within an area of approximately 1.37 acres. The landscape concept which is ‘an introverted oasis, with views’ plays on the idea of a tropical hideout in a residential setting; like a tree house, nestled high in a regal, mature tree within a garden. When you’re inside, you feel like you are one with nature and in a different world, far above the surrounding city.

Hillvista is an urban retreat with a ‘Modern Tropical Balinese’ landscape theme which uses water as a symbol of the source of life. It visually and spiritually enhances the living environment and offers a cool respite from the tropical climate. The landscape architectural strategy of Hillvista was to exploit the site to its fullest potential by placing the building at a North-South angle in order to eliminate the environmental impact of heat gain and glare within the apartment units. This arrangement created an opportunity for two swimming pool areas on both sides of the block, where a majority of the units can enjoy attractive pool and garden views, as well as the magnificent panorama of the surrounding green, hilly landscape.

Impiana Resort Phuket

Setia Eco Park Phase 6 Waterway

Pentago Landscape Sdn. Bhd.

Aroma Tropics Sdn. Bhd.

Here at Impiana Resort, Phuket, modern villas dot the gentle slopes, while gardens and pools compliment the views of the ocean. A stunning backdrop of untouched tropical forest completes the scene. In order to achieve this, the major planning consideration of the Impiana Resort landscape design was to create a contemporary setting which would incorporate the site’s panoramic view of the nearby ocean. With the plantings chosen for the project, a touch of tropical flavour was introduced to the site, blending perfectly with the surrounding environment. Here, holiday makers can enjoy complete privacy as the landscape design carefully creates a unique secret garden space around each villa.

The waterway, covering a 6.5 acre plot of land, is part of the smart solutions to prioritise landscape features by converting monsoon drains to green waterways for the benefit of the community. The waterway runs between houses, with pathways that flow with the gentle gradients of the river shore. The water gracefully meets and disperses to and from the main pedestrian path of the township, which is visually connected to the larger pedestrian networks, contributing to the richness of the Eco Park’s landscape. The design concept outlined was a “Japanese-style garden”, with the physical attributes mirroring the ‘expression of nature’ concept of Japanese gardening principles. The application of some Japanese garden features, such as “Shikiishi (stone pavement)”, “Karikomi (trimmed shrub)”, “Tohroh (stone lantern)”, “Azumaya (gazebo)” and the traditional environmental practice of stone-plant combination are materialised in this tropical version of a peaceful Japanese Garden.

Kenanga Woods Kayangan Heights

Setia Eco Cascadia Show Village

Just Right Design Sdn. Bhd.

Tajul LandArt

Situated on the outskirts of Shah Alam lies Kayangan Heights, a hidden jewel, nestled quietly within 416.85 acres of undulating hills and pristine forest. Part of this development, Kenanga Woods, ensures its residents can have the best of both worlds in the form of a country residence or a holiday home, safe in the knowledge that they possess a luxurious, private haven, replete with lush greenery. With its extensive natural surroundings, Kenanga Woods offers opportunities for enjoying the outdoors with a myriad of recreational facilities. In order to enjoy the best views of the lake, each home unit faces the valley, with the local forest rising behind. The raised platform of each unit is covered with copious amounts of climbing plants, in order to connect the forest with the built environment in a seamless and eco-friendly manner. The park surrounding the lake is planned to not only provide recreational facilities for each home but as a further connection with the land to maximise privacy and minimise undue disturbance to the existing surroundings. The streetscape is carefully designed to ensure minimal maintenance, with the selection of small leaf trees which, at the same time, provide ample shade for pedestrians. For additional safety, hedges are planted to separate the pedestrian walkway from the arterial roadways throughout the development.

Setia Eco Cascadia is a township constructed upon the ethos of being eco-friendly. The land topography of the site was respected, with minimal leveling undertaken, in order to retain the originality of the area. The hills and dales of the land were also protected with the addition of natural, cascading formations that preserve and enhance the space with trees planted to create a green seamless flow towards the residential precinct. Here, landscape elements such as a dry creek are designed as a feature to cater for water runoff during heavy downpours, with the water channeled to the nearest pond to prevent flash flooding. The residence is also connected by green lanes and rear gardens which serve as recreational spaces and a community social space. At Setia Eco Cascadia, the natural and built elements all join to become a complete and harmonious single entity.

Dai Phuoc Phase 1 Vietnam

D’Vida Bukit Jelutong

Pentago Landscape Sdn. Bhd.

Mentari Design

The Dai Phuoc Phase 1 residential development was inspired by motifs found in the frames and panels of traditional Vietnamese homes. This clever feature ensures the landscape blends perfectly with its location, while providing a timeless three dimensional space. Further exploring this idea, the hardscape elements receive a strong Vietnamese feel which becomes the essence of each node within the design. A careful selection of tropical plants and signature trees redefines the entire softscape and provides multipurpose outdoor spaces for residents of all ages.

Located in a 150-acre commercial centre named Bukit Jelutong City Centre, d’Vida is designed to be the main commercial hub for the township’s residents as well as for the entire Shah Alam area. The design of d’Vida is to create a seamless experience for users taking a leisurely stroll around the area. Beautifully landscaped plazas and surroundings are designed to harmonise with the environment and join effortlessly with shady verandas, arcades and decks, which are all designed to encourage healthy outdoor activities. When considering the sustainable development aspect of the project, the developer has taken extra steps to implement rainwater harvesting in d’Vida.

The rooftops of the buildings are pitched towards the direction of the canal, thereby channeling rainwater to be recycled for irrigation purposes. This ingenious system compliments the built environment with the outdoor spaces and exemplifies the sustainable landscape approach.

University Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) Kampar

Praxcis Design Sdn. Bhd. Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman is an education development project located on 1300 acres of land in Kampar, Perak. The site, being an old tin mine, has 25 ex-mining ponds and lakes, encompassing 40% of the entire site area, with the west of the site incorporating a backdrop of mountain ranges that offers a beautiful panoramic view alongside a serene lake setting for the entire development. The landscape concept of “The Memories of the Best Years” describes the campus as a social node, a memorable gathering, an unforgettable event, a community space, a cultural identity, a distinguished occasion and a nurturing space as the university serves as a place where students meet to forge lifelong friendships and to experience a melting pot of memorable experiences. All the landscape elements showcased are very simple, elegant and minimalist in nature, without any fanfare or excessive primping. They indicate a strong and open relationship with the surrounding lake environment and encourage social interaction and a connection with the outdoors. This enables students, in their social capacity, to mingle, integrate and to coexist peacefully within their learning environment.

Feb-May 2013

The Central Park Bangsar South Urban Design Group Sdn. Bhd. The Central Park design focusses on drawing the surrounding urban energy, or “Chi”, into the unique “five pillars” central water feature. The five pillars water feature represents the 5 elements of fire, earth, metal, water and wood. Branching out from the centre to the east axis is the “Eucalyptus Woods”, an informal planting, with a designated smoker’s area and public seating. Towards the west wing, “Palm Avenue” extends outwards, with a pathway planned to link to the future urban park development at “The Vertical”. On the north-south axis, the design allows for green open spaces with turf and trees acting as a buffer between the buildings. For high pedestrian connection areas, such as the main centre north-south axis to the LRT station, more paved areas are planned and planted with varieties of Frangipani Trees. The park is also carefully planned with sculptured glass and a steel structure staircase which connects to the car park below. A clever device employed here is the disguise of the air ventilation chambers, which pop up out of the ground just like many a free standing sculpture. When the sun sets, they are lit with warm light and become another urban feature.
