Welcome to another issue of Landskap Bulletin, your source of information for the many exciting recent developments in the field of Landscape Architecture in Malaysia and around the world. This special issue of Landskap Bulletin showcases the award winning entries from the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards 2009, presented at the recent ILAM Annual Dinner, which took place on 10th April 2010. The quality of this year’s entries was extremely high, as you will discover and I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to all award winners. I would also like to congratulate all council members and the dinner committee for their excellent work and for organising a very successful celebratory dinner. The ILAM Annual Dinner 2010 also witnessed the conferment of ILAM Honorary Membership, the highest ILAM award, upon YA Bhg Tun Jeanne Abdullah, Chairperson of Landskap Malaysia and former First Lady of Malaysia. Tun Jeanne has made a significant contribution to the development of Landscape Architecture in Malaysia and as part of her continuing efforts to promote Malaysia’s Landscape Architecture, she will be delivering a special speech at the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) World Council Meeting in Suzhou, China, on 27th May 2010. This issue features a profile of Y.A Bhg. Tun Jeanne Abdullah, highlighting her numerous achievements since the inception of Landskap Malaysia.

ILAM has also been proud to work together with Landskap Malaysia to organise the recently concluded Malaysia Green Forum 2010, which was held on 26-27th April 2010, in Putrajaya. This highly successful forum was attended by 450 delegates, who spent the two days of intense deliberation in a search for solutions for a Green and Sustainable Malaysia.

ILAM Calendar

As mentioned above, the month of May will see the return to Asia of the IFLA World Congress, to be held in Suzhou and, as an IFLA member country, Malaysia will be sending a sizeable delegation. The Congress will bid a fond farewell to IFLA President, Dr. Diane Menzies, who has been instrumental in the development of the Landscape Architecture field and an active President of the IFLA. We wish her well in her future undertakings and look forward to working closely with her successor, Desiree Martinez.

We are all aware that Climate Change is real and that, as global citizens, the time has come for us to play our part in preventing the potentially catastrophic consequences of global warming. Month

A landscape is inclusive of both natural and man-made environments. It traverses the mountains, valleys, rivers, lakes, seas and islands of our beloved country and extends beyond political boundaries. Perhaps this is the impetus that inspired her to set up Landskap Malaysia. Landskap Malaysia, being perhaps the only landscape NGO in the world, aims to promote an awareness of the importance of our landscapes, - the natural, built, and living landscapes. As an NGO Landskap Malaysia has the advantage of being able to work together with a variety of government agencies. It can also cooperate with other local and international NGOs and the public towards a common goal – to build a culture of love for our national landscape – for the present and future generations.

Recently, Y.A.Bhg. Tun Jeanne has also been instrumental in the establishment of the Paralympic Park in Bukit Jalil, leading the Royal Belum Expedition, organizing the Malaysian Green Forum 2010 and numerous projects encouraging school children to love our environment and landscapes. Tun Jeanne’s passion for our landscapes is also shared by her loving and supportive husband, Tun Abdullah Bin Haji Ahmad Badawi, our beloved former Prime Minister, who provides the greatest encouragement in all of her efforts. The Institute of Landscape Architects, Malaysia confers honorary membership upon selected prominent members of the Malaysian public who have made outstanding contributions towards the causes of landscape architecture and the landscape architecture profession. Previous recipients of ILAM Honorary Membership include Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, Tan Sri Elyas Omar, Tan Sri Sanusi Junid and Tan Sri Halim Saad and we are proud to present Y.A. Bhg. In conjunction with the World Landscape Architecture Month 2010 celebration and ILAM Annual Dinner, The Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia (ILAM) announced the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards for outstanding projects completed in Malaysia. The Awards honour the best in landscape architecture from various parts of the industry.

Tun Jeanne Abdullah The Institute of Landscape Architects is proud to announce the conferment of ILAM Honorary Membership on Y.A. Bhg. Tun Jeanne Abdullah, in recognition of her lifelong commitment to the enjoyment and preservation of Malaysia’s natural heritage and to the field of landscape architecture.

Tun Jeanne Abdullah received her early education at the Assunta School, Petaling Jaya and then, as a young woman, embarked on a career in the hospitality industry. Some years later, having obtained extensive experience in the fields of management, administration, sales, marketing, and procurement, she was handpicked to supervise the official residence of Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister. Her outstanding talent, abilities, and her charming personality subsequently resulted in her elevation to the position of Manager of the Seri Perdana Complex, the official residence of the Prime Minister. Then, on 9th June 2007, as fated by Allah S.W.T., she was married to Y.A.B. Dato’ Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and became Malaysia’s First Lady.

The Awards are divided into two categories: 1. Property Developer Awards in Landscape Planning & Development. 2. Professional Awards in Landscape Design & Planning.

In her younger days, Y.A. Bhg. Tun Jeanne Abdullah enjoyed sports, such as tennis, and discovering the outdoors. Despite being a city girl, she, her family and her friends relished the opportunity to explore nature spots in the vicinity of Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur. Of course, in the 1950s and 60s both Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur were much closer to nature, with more real jungle than the concrete type. Perhaps this is why Tun Jeanne Abdullah became so concerned about the condition of our environment and particularly about our natural landscape. For her concern for this landscape has developed into a profound love. As Malaysia’s First Lady, she and her Prime Minister husband, Dato’ Seri (now Tun) Abdullah Ahmad Badawi felt that something more constructive needed to be done to address the problems facing our environment. This noble thought translated into the establishment by the government of the Malaysian Landscape Advisory Panel, comprised of selected members with a variety of talents and united by a common passion for our national landscape. Y.A. Bhg. Tun Jeanne was appointed as its Chairperson. Among the first of her acts as Chairperson of the Malaysian Landscape Advisory Panel was to tackle an area even many of us landscape architects are still shy to be involved in, and that is the preservation of our tropical rainforest. She feels very strongly that our tropical rainforest holds the key to the well being of our nation and she is right, as it represents a treasure trove of immense value and much more than simply a source of timber and timber products. For Tun Jeanne, our rainforest is a unique national asset that belongs to all of us and the generations that come after us and she possesses a real concern about the rapid destruction of the flora and forna of forest ecosystems. As the wife of the Prime Minister, she quickly realised that unless something is done fast we will soon lose our forests to insensitive development. And so she devised and introduced the “Hutan Kita” forest replanting programme. “Hutan Kita” or “Our Forest” is a community-based forest replanting programme. It was first launched by our then Prime Minister, Dato’ Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, on 15th February 2009 at the Bukit Kiara Forest Reserve in Kuala Lumpur. In the struggle to protect, conserve and enhance the nation’s landscape, Y.A.Bhg. Tun Jeanne has understood very well that the true meaning of a landscape is not confined to the beautification of cities and planting of a few thousand trees and flowering plants.

The Jury Process The jury process for the Awards is “blind”. In other words, the identities of the entrant and creative team are not revealed to the jury. Members of the Professional Awards Jury, as well as the firms, organizations, and agencies they represent, are not eligible to enter the Professional Awards program. The Jury Process took two days to review a total of 38 entries.

Valencia Homes The inspiration for the landscaping concept of this boutique township was derived from the simple beauty of “Pure Nature”. The development adds a ‘Tropical Touch’ to the ideal of an ‘English Garden’, to present an idealized view of nature, comprising lakes, streams, and gently rolling lawns. Winding paths and roads are set against lush groves of trees, and in turn are complimented by the architecture of the residences. The resulting ambience is that of an idyllic pastoral landscape, not only beautiful to the eye, but, more importantly, forming a natural setting where people can rest, relax and refresh. In this residential community the homes do not dominate, but rather seemingly blend into the surrounding landscape. Today, this development is maturing into a testament to the beauty of natural landscaping where a disciplined “wilderness” exists in harmony with gracefully designed residences.

Set amidst a lush landscape against the backdrop of a forest reserve, Setia Eco Park is a residential enclave truly like no other. The development is the jewel in the crown for S P Setia Berhad, being a pioneer of the eco-landscape concept, which stresses the importance of achieving the right balance between man and nature. Spanning 791-acres of freehold land, the developer took great care when planning this niche project so as to preserve the natural streams and undulating terrains of the tract in order to minimise disturbances to the neighbouring Bukit Cahaya Agriculture Park. Approximately 25% of Setia Eco Park is dedicated as green lungs, which include a 30-acre recreational lake park and 50-acre forest park. Meanwhile, 94-acres of land are allocated to create 26km of waterways, lakes and creeks that flow throughout the enclave.

The lap pool, finished with natural stones, powerfully expresses the symbolism of the linear form with its long, encasing glass protruding out into nothingness.

10 Mont’ Kiara 10 Mont’ Kiara is a luxurious condominium development exclusively positioned on 7.346 acres of freehold land in Mont’ Kiara, Kuala Lumpur. To create an environmentally sensitive residential masterpiece, the developer and its team departed from the norm by devoting the majority of the development to natural landscaping. Green open spaces comprise an impressive 60% of the total site and house over 100 species of plants. In addition to the lush tropical vegetation, the carefully crafted “Conservatory Garden”, flanked by vertical plantings, provides a dynamic perspective to all who travel through it. The developer and landscape architect have cleverly married “eco-density” with the concept of an ancient garden. Suspended cubical structures holding vertical gardens are stacked on top of each other, to increase the amount of greenery.

The 6m x 80m natural feature wall of the Setia Eco Gardens sales gallery in Johor Bahru is a fine example of S P Setia Berhad’s commitment to eco-friendly developments and making buildings greener and more sustainable for all.

The Eco Gallery, Setia Eco Gardens The Setia Eco Gardens sales office, Eco Gallery, boasts a beautiful green feature wall façade that not only serves as a marketing tool but also immediately conveys S P Setia Berhad’s commitment to the eco concept, which derives from a deep and proactive respect for nature and is reflected in the idea of “giving back” to the environment. Thus, the Eco Gallery is especially built according to green principles using sustainable building materials and even its office interiors are inspired by nature. The plants on the green 6m x 80m wall were selected based on their aesthetic value to create a “green statement”, the prelude to a symphony of experiences for the visitor.

G-Hotel

Banjaran Hot Springs Retreat is a true spa and wellness sanctuary, offering pampering and healing treatments and programmes based on authentic Malaysian practices, in a unique, natural rainforest setting.

Located on Penang’s famous Gurney Drive boulevard, the G-Hotel offers outstanding views towards the sea along with extensive shopping and dining attractions along the promenade. The hotel’s landscape design employs a minimalist ‘box’ approach, through the use of simple, clean lines, thereby echoing the hotel’s themes of the modern and contemporary.

Located at the foot of majestic, 400-million-year old limestone hills, the Retreat sits in a secluded valley, encircled by caves and ancient rainforest. It is a natural spa set amidst the scenic surrounding of Tambun Hot Springs within the integrated township of Sunway City, Ipoh, in Perak. In order to meet the objectives of biodiversity conservation/preservation and a reduced carbon footprint, responsible planning and development of the resort has taken into account energy conservation, water conservation, nature conservation, waste management and minimal use of chemicals and pesticides.

A four-meter high green box wall acts as a partition to separate the swimming pool area from the pool bar area. The visual line of this structure has been further enhanced through the use of interesting textures and lining, such as the metal boxes filled with Iris plants, orange coloured lines and wooden panelling with lighting fixtures.

Pendas Creek Park, Leisure Farm Resort Pendas Creek Park is situated within the Estate Villa Precinct of Leisure Farm Resort. The Park forms part of the 380 acres of green space to be found within the Resort and contributes to the Resort’s design concept of ‘Mind, Body and Soul’. It takes the form of a 1.3km linear waterway park running to the rear of bungalow gardens, creating a community space for congregating and pursuing leisure activities.

ParkCity Central Park The landscape design concept is to create an elegant, modern park for the residents of the Desa ParkCity township. The landscape design aimed to reduce the dependence on shrub and structure planting and thereby reduce the long-term maintenance costs. This was achieved by using sculpted earth forms and mounding to provide spatial definition and create rolling parkland lawns. Footpaths are integrated with the landform to achieve a smooth flowing curvilinear design that flows with the main park spaces. There are no steps within the primary park circulation to provide a complete barrier free footpath network throughout the entire park. The lawns are punctuated by blocks of planting and/or iconic pavilions that sit as feature elements within the landscape.

Pendas Creek Park incorporates a series of bridges, decks, platforms, kiosks and a children’s playground, positioned alongside the edge of the waterway. All of the structures within the Park adopt a ‘minimalist’ approach, to achieve a modern yet timeless impression. To achieve maximum cost-effectiveness and minimum maintenance, natural materials such as rubble stones, common clay bricks, crushed rock chippings, raw concrete, natural timber and steel are used as the core building materials for all hardscape elements. The entire creek is a weir, with a series of dams to create cascading water bodies to produce the sound of flowing water. Rock boulders are positioned to protect the creek’s banks, slowing down the storm water run-off during the heavy rain, thereby minimizing the risk of flash floods downstream and improving water quality. In addition to the existing trees, 8,000 new trees and shrubs were introduced and tagged with names for the convenience of nature lovers and effectively serve as an educational medium to introduce future generations to the fundamentals and significance of horticulture.

Ipoh City Urban Pocket Park

The design of Manjung Mangrove Park aims to create a sense of place through nature and to enhance the unique characteristics of the mangrove ecosystem. The objective is to develop facilities to make the mangrove swamp accessible, while retaining and preserving the existing natural mangrove habitats.

The partial development of Jalan Dato’ Tahwil Azar and Jalan Mustapha Al-Bakri as a ‘semi-pedestrian mall’, named ‘Gerbang Malam’, is an Ipoh City Council initiative that aims to attract urban dwellers and tourists to Ipoh City Centre. The project is to develop a pocket plaza measuring 72m x 60m, within the ‘Gerbang Malam’ stretch. It establishes four design objectives: 1) To create a pedestrian network that celebrates the richness of local culture 2) To create a pedestrian mall as a tourist attraction in Ipoh City 3) To provide space for business opportunities such as a flea market 4) To provide space for social activities, public facilities and an urban focal point.

A canopy walkway and viewing towers bring visitors close to nature by providing a close-up experience of the Mangrove Park. Sensitively constructed so as not to have any negative impact upon the existing natural mangrove swamp, the park intends to provide an educational and recreational opportunity for local and foreign visitors.

LandArt Design’s creative sculpture entitled ‘Waves Of Prosperity’ has made a distinctive statement at the heart of Gurney Drive. The sculpture takes the form of a flock of seagulls hovering over stainless steel waves, which are in turn built over a cascading waterfall and surrounded by lawn.

The landscape approach in Jaya One focuses on creating spaces, especially in the form of squares and courtyards. To overcome the problem of limited space, innovative architecture and landscape planning has been used to achieve a unique sense of hidden areas, which provide different experiences and adventures at every turn. Patrons are able to take a leisurely stroll through the multiple split-levels, platforms, tiers, balconies, interesting water features, colorful sculptures and vibrant ornaments.

The Madge

Located at Jalan Lembah Permai, Tanjung Bungah, Alila is situated on a verdant, undulating hill slope, overlooking the sea and providing spectacular views.

The architectural form of The Madge Condominium created a central courtyard effect and the landscape design response was to create a formal central courtyard water garden as a hidden sanctuary for the residents. The traditional approach of incorporating a formal ornamental pool was abstracted to provide a 20m lap pool and the space was further embellished with a recreational plaza and a raised lobby terrace.

The design approach focused on achieving a ‘natural’ and ‘original’ effect throughout all of the landscaped areas. Native species of flora have been planted to restore the original ambience of tropical greenery. Fruit trees and fragrant plants were planted to attract wildlife to the site. Part of the compound drain has also been conserved and beautified to become a small stream, housing aquatic flora and fauna.

The lap pool is raised 750mm above the courtyard level due to the lack of headroom in the parking structure below. The raised configuration has been turned into a feature by linking the pool water level to be consistent with the solarium deck, entrance lobby terrace and planters in front of the units. This creates two distinct design levels, one for planting and water and one for pedestrian movement within the space.

Mr. Yong’s Bungalow Tucked away in one of the established residential enclaves of Pulau Tikus, Penang, this privately owned 2-storey bungalow is a veritable oasis of serenity and charm.

The Dr. Thokha Muhammad Residence The garden of the Dr. Thokha Muhammad Residence has been designed especially for a surgeon, who is also a true nature lover. The garden utilizes forest trees and plants to surround the house with a natural forest ambiance. The concept is to create an Ecological Tropical Garden design that stimulates all of one’s senses.

The garden of the bungalow comprises a number of landscaped sections. The first section of the car porch area is a 50m–long bamboo entrance alley that serves as a divider between the house and the property next door. The alley is fashioned out of railway sleepers, with randomly sited square gaps decorated with red cactus planted in cups used in rubber tapping, creating an aesthetically pleasing view from the car porch. The second section is of vertical landscape design. This vertical green wall consists of an I-beam frame and Guzmania plants that conceal a storeroom. The planting has been done to depict the ‘Happy Fish’ symbol. It is this contrasting use of materials that gives the garden design its amazing quality. At every turn, the garden is a pleasurable experience that does not seem to wane.

ILAM Annual Dinner & Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards Held on April 10 at The Palace of Golden Horses and attended by 500 guests from the industry, the ILAM Annual Dinner 2010 was a resounding success. The event, held in conjunction with the World Landscape Architecture Month 2010 celebrations, sought to honour professionals from the industry through conferment of the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards 2009. This event represents a wonderful opportunity in ILAM’s increasingly busy calendar for professionals from the industry and associated fields to come together and celebrate successes in the practice of landscape architecture. Responding to the evening’s theme, “Shades of Green”, guests arrived attired in a variety of outfits with green elements, bringing attention to the event’s objective of emphasising the importance of preserving the natural environment through a responsible design ethic. The dinner was supported by S P Setia Berhad Group as the Premium Platinum Sponsor for the publication of the Landscape Architecture Malaysia Yearbook 2009. The Silver Sponsor was Gamuda Land. Among the guests who attended the event were Y.A. Bhg. Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards 2009

The highlight of the night was the presentation of the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards, which were divided into a number of categories. A total of 23 awards were presented and Land Art Design Sdn. Bhd. from Penang was the evening’s big winner, walking away with 4 awards.

A night of entertainments

The dinner was entertained by performances by the Bale-Bale Group, who performed a selection of all time favourites. The songs were accompanied by a unique blend of ethnic musical instruments, while the troupe were dressed in green batik outfits and farmers’ hats. The finale of the night was the singing of the song “Hijau” by ILAM Council Members, accompanied by the guest-of-honour, Y.A. Bhg. Tun Jeanne Abdullah, on stage. The entire hall joined in. Following the success of this year’s awards ceremony, ILAM will begin planning the next Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards as it continues its efforts to honour professionals in the industry.

Landscape Industry Carnival in conjunction with National Landscape Day Celebration 2010 Feb 27– March 7, 2010

In conjunction with the National Landscape Day Celebration, on March 3, 2010, the National Landscape Department of the Ministry of Housing & Local Government Malaysia organised the Landscape Industry Carnival at Cempaka Lake Gardens, Bandar Baru Bangi. The 9-day exhibition drew exhibitors from various parts of Malaysia, focusing in particular on the exhibition and sale of landscape plants and garden furniture. The Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia (ILAM) participated as an exhibitor to promote and create awareness among the public of the role of professional landscape architects in Malaysia. In conjunction with the celebration, a seminar on the landscape industry was also held at the Palm Garden Resort, IOI Resort, Putrajaya from March 3-4, 2010.

Royal Belum Expedition February 2010

ILAM joined the Landskap Malaysia group led by Y.A. Bhg. Tun Jeanne Abdullah, Chairperson of Landskap Malaysia, on an expedition in Royal Belum Forest Reserve in Perak state during February 2010. Also present were Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Emkay Foundation chairman, Tan Sri Mustapha Kamal Abu Bakar. During the expedition, the planting of mangrove saplings at the Belum Rainforest Resort in Pulau Banding took place as well as a visit to the “Orang Asli” local aborigine village. The programme aimed to encourage appreciation of nature and trees and to preserve our Royal Belum natural heritage

Landscape Architecture Professional Practice Course & Examination (KAIAL) 2010 April 10 – May 8, 2010

Once every year during the month of April, the KAIAL is held to certify professional landscape architects. This year, the Professional Practice Course was held on April 10, 2010 at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) while the examination followed on May 8, 2010. A total of 41 candidates sat for the professional examination this year.

Herba Dapur “Kitchen Herbs” TV Programme May-June, 2010

Several members of ILAM have been selected for involvement in a 13-episode series of garden makeover programmes, produced by RTM and focusing on the use of local herbs. Each week, the programme will select a house and the landscape architect will make recommendations relating to the existing garden and suggest a new design concept by introducing 5 different types of herbs. The programme will also introduce viewers to the natural habitat of the herbs. The garden makeover will be supported by the team of UiTM Landscape Architecture students. Towards the end of each programme, an herb expert will explain the many usages of the selected herbs in our daily life, such as for cooking or even for medicinal purposes. Watch out for the programme soon on RTM!

IFLA World Congress 2010, Suzhou, China May 28-30, 2010

The 47th IFLA World Congress, hosted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development and the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) and organised by the Chinese Society of Landscape Architecture (CHSLA) will be held in Suzhou, China from May 28-30, 2010. The theme of the Congress is “Harmony and Prosperity - Traditional Inheritance and Sustainable Development.” The Congress will focus on cherishing and protecting traditional natural and cultural values. It will try to balance tradition and development in today’s society in the broader context of rapid globalization and urbanization. Malaysia will be sending a sizeable delegation this year comprising both professionals and students from the universities. ILAM Honorary Member, Y.A. Bhg. Tun Jeanne Abdullah will be delivering a special speech at the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) World Council Meeting on May 27, 2010. The year, the Congress will also bid a fond farewell to IFLA President, Dr. Diane Menzies, who has been instrumental in the development of the Landscape Architecture field and an active President of the IFLA.

BIM PROFESSIONAL CONNECT 2010 May 15-16, 2010

Balai Ikhtisas Malaysia, BIM (Malaysia Professional Centre) organised the BIM’s inaugural event “PROFESSIONALS CONNECT” at the Malaysian Tourism Centre (Matic) Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur from May 15-16, 2010. The event included a Public Forum on Saturday, May 15, 2010, at the Dewan Tengku Abdul Rahman, which featured presentations and panel sessions involving well-known speakers such as our former Prime Minister, YB Tun Mahathir Mohamad, on current topics and emerging issues. An exhibition was held at the same time, with participation by BIM members such as Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia (ILAM) and others, showcasing their professions and services. A Joint Family Carnival with MERCY Malaysia and the Ministry of Tourism was held on Sunday, May 16, 2010 at the car park area, with various products on sale. All proceeds from the Carnival will go to support MERCY’s humanitarian causes.

Malaysia Green Forum 2010

On Monday April 26, 2010, Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Seri Mohd Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak inaugurated the first Malaysia Green Forum (MGF2010) at Dewan Seri Siantan, Perbadanan Putrajaya. The twoday forum, with the theme “A Greener and Sustainable Malaysia”, aimed to provide a platform for different stakeholders with interests in various green issues to meet, discuss, and exchange ideas leading to the formulation of joint resolutions on how best to handle the degradation of the natural and living environment in a more efficient, effective, and rapid manner.

Prime Minister officiates the Malaysia Green Forum 2010

Launched in 2006, World Landscape Architecture Month is an opportunity for IFLA member associations to join in celebrating the landscape profession. April represents an ideal month to hold this event, containing, as it does, Earth Day (April 22nd) and the birthday of Frederick Law Olmsted (April 27), founder of the landscape architecture profession in North America. Every year, IFLA members from many of the now 61 associations worldwide observe the event in their own unique way. As Dr. Diane Menzies, IFLA’s president has observed, “this is an opportunity for our passionate profession of landscape architecture to show what they are doing and involve groups they work with around the world.”

Originating in 2009, Landscape Experiences represents the wish of Michel Péna, president of the French Federation of Landscape (FFP), to develop a “landscape culture” and introduce landscape considerations into contemporary environmental discussions. On April 24, 2010, Landscape Experiences presented a lecture, ‘Experiences on the grand landscape - a lecture by Jacques Sgard, urban planner.’

United States of America (USA) Designing our Future – Sustainable Landscape

YAB Dato’ Sri Najib emphasized that the Government is committed on issues related to the environment and thus has initiated programs towards a greener and sustainable Malaysia by implementing green technologies in the areas of energy, transport, building and water.

ASLA, the American Society of Landscape Architects, has launched a new area on its website that is specifically designed to help the public understand what it is that landscape architects do and how their work benefits everyone. Using sustainable design as a theme, the 10 case studies featured on “Designing Our Future: Sustainable Landscapes” represent a range of project types. Each contains a gallery of images with explanatory text plus clear, understandable write-ups and fact sheets. ASLA will keep tracking activities around the country to capture best practices and monitor the impact the activities have on public outreach.

The MGF2010 was jointly organised by Landskap Malaysia, Universiti Putra Malaysia and Perbadanan Putrajaya with Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia (ILAM) as the supporting organisation. Four hundred and fifty industry players from public and private sectors, NGOs and academicians participated in this forum. Four renowned international and twelve local speakers shared their expert views and best practices on sustainable environmental development. The papers presented included a keynote address by YABhg. Tun Jeanne Abdullah titled A Holistic Approach to a Greener and Sustainable Malaysia and other papers “Green Cities, Better Cities: How Green Spaces Can Play A Role In Successful City Branding”, “Sustainable Oil Palm Plantations - The RSPO Initiatives”, and “Towards Good Forest Governance and Conservation: Sabah and the Heart of Borneo” to name but a few.

New Zealand The Power of Landscape

The conference aimed to stimulate fresh thinking in dealing with contentious landscape issues. Speakers explored the inherent tension between the extraordinary power that landscape exerts on us and our increasing ability to change and to reshape it at every level. This New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects’ Conference 2010 was held at the Museum of New Zealand, Tongarewa, TePapa, Wellington, from April 15-17, 2010.

Norway Edvard Munch and the Landscape of Oslo Fjord

The Department of Landscape Planning of the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB) celebrated World Landscape Architecture Month with a study of the famous symbolist painter Edvard Munch’s relationship with the landscape. Art historians and landscape architects also debated the outdoor landscape and Munch’s approach to landscape.

The MGF2010 was supported by three esteemed partners: UEM Group Berhad, Sime Darby Berhad and TSR Capital Berhad. MGF2010 was also supported by seven Ministries: Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Ministry of Housing and Local Government, Ministry of Higher Education, Ministry of Federal Territories and Urban Well Being, Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation and Ministry of Plantation, Industry and Commodities.

April of each year brings World Landscape Architecture Month, an event established by the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) to celebrate landscape architecture and its contributions to creating sustainable landscapes and improving the public quality of life.

The Prime Minister was pleased to note that this forum supports his statement at the United Nations Framework on Climate Change Conference (COP-15), held in December 2009, where Malaysia agreed to make an attempt to reduce its carbon dioxide emission by as much as 40% by the year 2020.

The Forum was also attended by our former Prime Minister, YA Bhg Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who is also an advisor to Landskap Malaysia and Y.B. Datuk Peter Chin Fah Kui, Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water. The Forum was officially closed by YB Datuk Douglas Uggah Embas, Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment.

Malaysia Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards & ILAM Annual Dinner A call to protect our forest

This year, the celebration of World Landscape Architecture Month in Malaysia focused on the professional, as ILAM took the opportunity to honour individual achievements and to recognise outstanding projects. The awards ceremony, held in conjunction with the ILAM Annual Dinner, was a complete success, attended by 500 guests from the industry. A total of 23 awards were presented in four categories in the areas of academic achievement, heritage landscape conservation, professional landscape architectural design and property developer achievements in landscape planning and design. Among the guests who attended the ILAM Annual Dinner were Y.A. Bhg. Tun Jeanne Abdullah, Chairperson of Landskap Malaysia and former first lady of Malaysia, as the Guest-of-Honour; Dato’ Ishak Mohd Arif, ILAM Honorary Life President; Tan Sri Samsudin Osman, Chairman of Putrajaya Corporation; Y. Bhg. Datuk Seri Ahmad Fuad Bin Ismail, Mayor of Kuala Lumpur City and Y. Bhg. Dato’ Hj Ismail bin Ngah, President of ILAM.

ILAM Honorary Membership

The ILAM Annual Dinner 2010 also witnessed the conferment of ILAM Honorary Member, the highest ILAM award for an individual, on Y.A. Bhg Tun Jeanne Abdullah, Chairperson of Landskap Malaysia.

Once every year during the month of April, the KAIAL is held to certify professional landscape architects. This year the Professional Practice Course was held on April 10, 2010 at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) while the examination will follow on May 8 2010. A total of 41 candidates sat for the examination this year.

Alan Titchener New IFLA APR Vice-President

It seems only yesterday that we welcomed Dr. Diane Menzies to our shores, when Kuala Lumpur hosted the 44th IFLA World Congress in 2007. As President of IFLA, Dr. Menzies gave her full support to Malaysia in organizing the IFLA World Congress; however, her involvement with ILAM activities actually dates back much further, as she has made a number of visits to Malaysia over the years, including her attendance at the IFLA Eastern Regional Congress back in 2002. The Early Years Dr. Menzies began her career as a landscape architect in the City Planning Department of New Zealand’s capital city, Wellington. She was later transferred to the Parks and Recreation Department, where responsibilities included large-scale park policy and management, children’s play areas, designs for regional parks and community relations. With her move to a Government Ministry, she continued with her landscape planning work, subsequently becoming a manager within the Ministry for the Environment, responsible for one sector of the country, before directing the Ministry’s communications. After a period managing countryside parks in Britain, she returned to New Zealand to lecture and undertake her PHD studies. She then moved into private consultancy work for a range of clients before being appointed to the New Zealand Environment Court. As with many landscape architects in New Zealand, her experience has covered landscape planning for local and national government as well as for private clients and for education providers.

Support Around The World In 2007 alone Dr. Diane Menzies gave at least 18 presentations and attended 12 association meetings and 7 additional meetings, and the visits, presentations, conferences, media interviews and meetings have increased yearly. Great Appreciation from ILAM With her great service and dedicated effort to nurture and inspired landscape architects worldwide, ILAM bids a fond farewell to Dr. Diane Menzies, wishes her well in her future undertakings and looks forward to working closely with her successor, Desiree Martinez. ILAM would also like to express our sincere appreciation to our beloved Professor Dr. Mustafa Kamal Mohd Shariff, who has held the position of IFLA Asia-Pacific Region Treasurer and his dedicated efforts have make us proud. We are committed to working closely with his successor, Professor Leslie Chen.

Dr Diane Menzies, IFLA President 2006-2010

IFLA Positions Dr. Menzies has held a number of posts in IFLA, including Eastern Region Secretary for 1996 & 1999-2001 and IFLA Secretary General during the period 2001-2005. In October 2006, at the 43rd IFLA World Council Meeting in Minneapolis and with the appointment of a new committee, she took over the Presidency of IFLA from Martha Fajardo. New Initiatives & Administration One of the first steps the new committee took was to improve the visibility of the profession, through the organisation of World Landscape Architecture Month, which was inaugurated in April 2007. Later, accompanied by substantial media coverage, the Exco and all Asia Pacific representatives made an inspection visit to the Beijing Olympic village, in 2007. IFLA committee representatives have also visited association members; given papers; attended conferences, including the World Bank and the World Heritage Committee conferences, and met with many organisations. Ongoing IFLA Programmes: Congresses and Regional Conferences IFLA has maintained an Annual World Congresses programme during the presidency of Dr. Menzies. These were held in the following locations: • Malaysia: August 2007 • Netherlands: June 2008 • Brazil: October 2009 Regional conferences have also been held, including an educational forum in Colombia, annual EFLA Council meetings and seminars and a well-attended IFLA Asia-Pacific Regional Conference in Korea recently.

We would also like to bid farewell to Professor Tong Mahn Ann, who has performed an excellent service as a Vice-President looking into the interests of the IFLA Asia Pacific regional members. We are confident that his effort and vision will be maintained by the incoming Vice-President, Alan Titchener. Special thanks also goes to Darwina Neal, Prof Tong Mahn Ahn, James Hayter and Virginia Laboranti for their great support and assistance during the 44th IFLA World Congress in Kuala Lumpur and for making it a memorable congress for Landscape Architects from Malaysia and around the world. IFLA Asia-Pacific Region Symposium on Landscape Architecture Education, Malaysia 2010

IFLA International Student Design Competition & Student Charette Under the leadership of Professor Bev Sandalack, as Competitions chair, this competition has increased in prominence since its introduction in 2007, as IFLA were fortunate to receive ongoing annual sponsorship from Group Han of Korea.

The Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia (ILAM) will organise the 1st IFLA Asia-Pacific Region Symposium on Landscape Architecture Education, from October 7 to 9, 2010 at Putrajaya. The symposium will be jointly organised by Universiti Putra Malaysia, Perbadanan Putrajaya, National Landscape Department and in collaboration with The International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) – Asia Pacific Region. The 3-day symposium aims to bring together landscape architecture educators from higher education institutions in the Asia-Pacific region to exchange views on current issues faced by these institutions and by practising professionals and to discuss potential solutions to these challenges.

A charette was held in 2007 in Malaysia and a student summer school took place in 2008. This year a charette is being held in conjunction with the 2010 Congress.

The theme for the Symposium will be ‘ASIA-PACIFIC LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE EDUCATION IN THE 21ST CENTURY: BRIDGING CULTURE AND GREEN ISSUES’.

International partnerships and collaboration • A partnership was established with the International Union of Architects (UIA) in 2006 and renewed in 2009. • An agreement was reached with ISOCARP to share the Brussels office. The last four years have also witnessed formal agreements with ICOMOS (Monuments and Sites), the International Federation of Parks and Recreation Administration (IFPRA), and the World Federation of Engineering Organisations. • In 2007, IFLA joined IUCN as an international NGO • IFLA has maintained contact and attended meetings of ECLAS (European Educators) and American educators, through James Taylor. • IFLA has also participated in UNESCO activities and a key World Heritage project, ‘Historic Urban Landscapes’ • IFLA attended the World Urban Forum in Canada in 2007 and this year sent a team to the Brazilian World Urban Forum, while also dispatching representative Desiree Martinez to at the UN Habitat Professionals Forum.

Related to the theme, the symposium will seek to formulate teaching methodologies and approaches relevant to our ever-changing world and suggest ways in which, through education, landscape architects can play a crucial role in solving environmental issues, without jeopardizing our rich cultural heritage. The symposium will be attended by speakers from 15 IFLA-APR member countries, including Australia, PR China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, The Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia.

Membership For the first time and with the aim of building up our own association members’ participation, a President’s Forum is being held at this year’s Congress. IFLA has also welcomed new members ISLAP from Iran, Paraguay, Ecuador, Central America and Caribbean associations and welcomed associations from Poland, Romania and Turkey to attend the Congress. Seven new association members have joined IFLA in the last four years.

The symposium will take the form of reports by representatives of individual nations on landscape architecture education; parallel seminars on a range of topics and forums for educators to formulate a set of approaches and solutions for a variety of educational problems. Proposed solutions will be compiled in a report at the end of the session.
