2013 Yearbook

Landscape Architecture senibina landskap

Foreword from ILAM PRESIDENT This is the sixth anniversary of the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards (MLAA) which has become a prominent event in the annual awards arena for professional landscape architectural design in Malaysia, and the region. This year, we have gained greater participation from outside Peninsular Malaysia and we include works from our members practicing in East Malaysia, namely Sabah & Sarawak, and also our neighbours in Singapore. The submissions for the year 2013 reveal a strong emphasis on design. More and more local practitioners have integrated clear cut lines and simple selection of plants to compliment the contemporary feel. In fact, this is also an effort to ease maintenance and management in terms of cost and manpower. Ecology corridors such as wetlands, waterways, natural streams and lakes have also become increasingly important as they enhance the ecosystem and provide a quality outdoor space to the public. We are extremely privileged to have this year’s Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards incorporated as part of the Gala Dinner for the IFLA2014 Asia Pacific Congress. It is an opportunity to showcase Malaysian design to the delegates of the congress. We hope this publication will mark another milestone for our profession and hope this compilation from the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards MLAA 2013 will inspire you to be more innovative in your search for the best landscape design solutions for tomorrow. Thank you

LAr. Mohd Fadrillah bin Mohd Taib Chief Editor | President, Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia (ILAM)

Foreword from IFLA VICE PRESIDENT The International Federation of Landscape Architects - Asia Pacific Region (IFLA APR), would like to congratulate ILAM on the excellent effort to organise the MLAA 2013 awards. This event is being held in conjunction with the World Landscape Architecture Month 2014 and also as part of the IFLA2014 Asia Pacific Congress Gala Night, held in Kuching, Sarawak and attended by participants from more than 15 countries. We are very excited to be part of the event to give support and recognition for the great achievements by the Malaysian landscape architecture profession. IFLA envisions landscape architecture to be a premier international profession by the year 2020. IFLA will be the leading international body, promoting the creation of a globally sustainable and balanced living environment from a landscape architectural perspective. It will promote the Landscape Architectural profession within a collaborative partnership of the allied built-environment professions, demanding the highest standard of education, training, research and professional practice and providing leadership and stewardship in all matters. Judging by the high quality entries, the MLAAwards is definitely a noble effort by ILAM. It is hoped that this commendable effort to promote and educate the general public on the contribution of landscape architecture to the creation of sustainable and balanced living environments and nation building will stimulate interest among other member countries to emulate this shining example from Malaysia. Congratulations once again to ILAM and all the winners. Thank you.

Dato’ LAr. Ismail bin Ngah

Vice President (Asia Pacific Region), International Federation of Landscape Architects

Setia Sky Residences, located on the fringe of the Kuala Lumpur City Centre, is inspired by rolling landforms. The sinuous, geometrically curved movements and rhythmic, folding patterns all act as an interpretation of the architectural facade of the design. The analogy here is made to resemble rice terraces and the organic landscape paintings by artist and Landscape Architect, Roberto Burle Marx. The result is a sinuous water body which flows through the landscape like a stream, forming the focal spine of the entire space. The design intent is to create various perspectives from multiple angles around the outdoor space, so that views from any one point on the deck will provide different and interesting compositions for residents and guests alike.

Mon’t Callista is a Semi-D housing development with greenery nestled between each property. In these new urban townships, the home-coming experience for residents is always a priority, hence this project showcases the landscape architect’s ability to create green spaces and new experiences in an innovative way. The unconventional method of pushing the security checkpoint further away from the main road creates an additional 100m of green space and lush tropical ambiance as a welcoming statement. Plants, such as Frangipani trees, are positioned in an artistic shape which reflects the idea of a flower presentation, as if welcoming an honoured guest. In addition, the guardhouse is placed at a 45 degree angle with the road, which creates better visibility for the security staff and extends the length of the view of the driveway.

ADDA Heights is conceived to be an up-market mixed residential development within the established and vibrant Tebrau Corridor in Johor Bahru. The park comprises a central lake, created from the extension of a retention pond with a small wetland as its upper stream. Two bridges gracefully span the lake, together with water cascades and a weir, clad in river boulders. A silt trap and wetlands filter the water with aquatic and semi-aquatic plants, ecologically improving the water quality of the lake. In line with promoting sustainable design, the park also incorporates rainwater harvesting for its toilets and creation of a green open swale replaces conventional, open drains. An island habitat sanctuary sits serenely upon the lake, creating a visually peaceful vista for the eye.

The success of this project lies in the harmonious combination of landscape artistry and landscape engineering. Designing waterscapes takes much consideration, from creating different weirs and waterfalls in multiple sizes, to different levels and heights which imitate natural cascades and amazing falls. To further enhance its eco-friendly nature, a Bioswale, a unique ecologically-attuned facility, is used to filter stormwater, before discharging it into the drainage system. During rainy days, stormwater gathers in the upper level pond, complete with Bioswale, before being discharged through a hidden tunnel, thus creating temporary waterfalls.

The Sarawak Cultural Village, located at the foothills of Gunung Santubong, was conceptualised by the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation, in the early nineteen eighties, to showcase the State’s rich ethnic culture. Over the years, Sarawak Cultural Village has become the venue for the annual “World Rainforest Music Festival”. The amphitheatre site, designed for a minimum of a 10,000 strong standing audience, is located at the foothills of Gunung Santubong, due to space and acoustic considerations. Aesthetically, the foliage of the primary forest forms the backdrop of the stage. Recognizing that the amphitheatre space for such an event was an informal and dynamic space, the amenities were articulated as a sequence of loosely connected spaces. Existing terrain of the area creates forms for audience seating, resulting in the realisation of different seating possibilities. Rock outcrops were retained, concrete edged turf and infilled kurbs were introduced, with rows of timber benches forming a screen to the rear of the amphitheatre.

These values have been deliberated and articulated from Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage as well as the latest technical know-how which lead to the current design as displayed by four different motifs. The concept embraced unique designs inspired by nature and our cultural heritage such as the concept of Fauna, Obor (The Torch), Flora (Dew Drop), Wau (Traditional Kite) and wood carvings of Sulur Bayu.

01 “Obor” or torch inspired street light 02 In response to the rich fauna of Taman Wetland, the design highlights an abstract of an insect’s eye 03 The Wau or Traditional Kite inspired streetlight design

04 The design of “obor” or torch highlights the basic utility reminiscent of those used to light living environment in the past 05 The design used flora to emphasise the garden city of Putrajaya. The floral design motif is articulated from our rich wood carving heritage and complemented with dew drop shaped lanterns 06 The design translated from the ever popular `wau’ and `sulur bayu’ or wind vane, is an identifiable artistic culture elements of Malaysia

02

Pedestrian pathways and connectivity, road and transportation networks are also planned, and all based on environmental sustainability and ‘Caring Society’, in line with Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) approach and design principals. Pedestrian linkages have now become important due to residents’ awareness of reducing carbon emissions through human activities such as walking and cycling to school, parks and other destinations. Through well-known green initiatives, the community and schools, together with Perbadanan Putrajaya, have upgraded the pedestrian tunnel Precinct 8 to make it safe and comfortable for children to use daily. The project has successfully demonstrated the ‘caring society’ role of the community in landscape and city planning principals, through enhancement of the landscape and the mural painting project.

EXPERIENTIAL LANDSCAPE TAMAN ALAM, KUALA SELANGOR

Experiential landscape ecology is widely conducted using diverse approaches to answer a broad range of questions. By assessing the response to controlled manipulations, alternate hypotheses can be clearly refuted, model parameters quantified, and conditions made ripe for unexpected insights. Results from landscape experiments compliment the many well developed observational and modeling approaches more commonly used in landscape ecology.

POST COAL MINING TOWN REVITALISATION BATU ARANG

Historically, Batu Arang was named ‘Malaya’s Only Coal Mine’. However, when coal demand declined, production ceased and collieries were boarded up and abandoned. Hence, the town was ignored and under-rated, undesirable environmental impact occurred, the historical significance of the area was abandoned and decreasing socio-economic values hit the region.

This new design proposal is aimed to energise Batu Arang by optimising the natural and historical resources, through integrated programming, a balance between community, environment and heritage can be achieved.
