The Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards, or MLAAs, marks the 8th annual award ceremony since its inception in 2007, with less than 20 submissions in 2 categories. Today, the awards have reached 7 categories with the latest introduced category, Young Landscape Architect Award, which honours individuals, with less than 10 years of experience, for their outstanding achievements and contributions to the profession.

It is a great honour to be invited to pen a few words for the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Yearbook 2015 on behalf of S P Setia, as Platinum Sponsor of the book. Firstly, a big thank you to the Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia (ILAM) and heartiest congratulations for successfully organising the 8th Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards. Your efforts in inspiring the evolution in landscape design trends in Malaysia is truly commendable.

The MLAAs have come a long way with more and more industry players joining us to be a part of this prestigious award. This is evidenced by our all-time high number of submissions with 130 entries this year, compared to 106 in the previous year. Submissions consist of both Malaysian projects and international projects from Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam.

Today, landscaping and real estate projects are almost inseparable. More often than not, first impressions are made up of the landscape surrounding a potential home. At S P Setia, we understand that besides looking for a well-connected, safe development, complete with a myriad of facilities and amenities, residents are also looking for a green and sustainable environment where they can flourish and grow with loved ones.

The MLAA awards have also raised the profile of the landscape architecture industry as the award was endorsed by the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA), at their council meeting, during the IFLA Asia Pacific Congress in Lombok, September 2015. Through this award, we hope to bring the various professions in built environment together to send a strong message to the community about the importance of a quality outdoor living environment.

Ingrained into every Setia development are verdant landscapes and green spaces that are pleasing to the eyes. Our commitment is to cultivate sustainable lifestyle practices for the sake of our communities, their children and future generations. Our objective is to build responsibly, from the point of ground-breaking, to put in place environmentally friendly infrastructure, coupled with innovative landscape design concepts to ensure all projects are sustainable.

This year, we have seen emerging landscape design trends, fresh ideas and innovative solutions at work. We hope you will be inspired by this publication as it highlights our homegrown landscape architects and their designs. PROJECT OF THE YEAR AWARD This is the highest award for the year. Only one winner will be selected, based on all the winners awarded the Excellence Award in the same year.

MLAA TROPHY THE TREE The trophy is inspired by topographical contour lines, positioned vertically, to resemble the shape of a tree. It symbolises both ‘land’ and ‘scape’. Standing at a height of 25cm, the trophy comes in various colours to represent the different award types.

GREEN ACHIEVEMENT AWARD This special award is nominated by ILAM council members and endorsed by ILAM President. It is based on special initiatives, for example: technology, festival, event, or media programme that benefit the public and environment at large and promotes the profession of landscape architecture.

EXCELLENCE AWARD This is the highest award for each category. Every year, there will be only one recipient, selected after the site visit by the jury.

SPECIAL HONOUR AWARD This award is given to the finalist of the Excellence Award candidates which did not win an Excellence Award, yet achieved a higher standard, above and beyond the Honour Award.

HONOUR AWARD An award which showcases exceptional work and meets the high standard outlined in the award criteria.

MERIT AWARD An award given to participants with commendable approach and ideas, yet not selected as a winner for an Honour Award.

Think BIG For the Future!

For most people, spending time outdoors in well-designed public spaces is a rewarding experience to be enjoyed. However, fast paced city life could make one stressful over time. The typical modern day lifestyle, one occupied with consumer electronics, can also be mentally exhausting. Recent studies have shown that people are healthier and more blissful in areas where they have access to nature. Thus, green urban living design is becoming therapeutically fulfilling. Beautiful surroundings and scenic landscapes providing natural floral scents are scientifically proven to rejuvenate the spirit, mind and body. With these benefits, the environment has unique values, as opposed to appreciation for building architecture or interior design. However, we are concerned that design and innovation for outdoor landscaping is not being given its due priority. Thus, to address such challenges, it is better to leverage the skills and talents of trained professional landscape architects.

A landscape architectâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s contribution is priceless, as we design holistically, integrating building plans with compatible landscaping. The landscape architecture profession is prepared to take the lead in shaping outdoor spaces and framing public awareness. Our role is to create, maintain, protect, and enhance spaces and places, both private and public, to be functional, beautiful and sustainable for a communityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s diverse needs. The outdoors begins on every front doorstep, hence fresh ideas for landscape work should continuously be evolving to meet the needs of every citizen. Design integration is important as its primary objective is to enhance environmental values and make spaces sustainable for future generations. With this in mind, I am excited to take up the challenge for a better future. It is timely to dream big for the future, a future in which we can make a big difference.

Jalan Ceylon, Kuala Lumpur

Verticas Residensi, and one internationally renowned serviced apartment tower - Lanson Place, are nestled within the forest reserve niche of Bukit Ceylon - a modern urban abode in the tranquil setting of a tropical rainforest. The design embraces the surrounding nature through the sensitive use of tropical native trees and water features with natural rocks. Views of the multiple landscape decks are channeled toward the surrounding rainforest, taking advantage of the unique setting. Despite being a dense development, sufficient greenery is achieved with green pockets allocated at various levels interlacing with each other throughout the lofty residential towers.

The Treez Bukit Jalil

The anatomy of a tree; its roots, trunk, branches, and twigs, inspired the creation of The Treez Jalil Residenceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s landscape concept. The design of the ground level represents the strength of the root system with sizeable trees and bountiful shrubs planted to represent the root systems. The 4m deep sunken lobby is the main feature of the whole landscape concept. This element embraces a serene forest feel, yet is equipped as a stylish hangout, surrounded by a waterfall and a giant tree trunk, with sculptural foliage hanging gently from the ceiling. Along the linear park, herbs and medicinal plants are planted to provide helpful information and to educate the residents about the many uses of the plants. The visible random lines of the flooring pattern further strengthens the concept of tree roots in the design. As the tower building represents the main trunk of a tree, feature trees and creepers were planted to represent the symbiotic plants on the tree trunk and branches.

The Leafz Sungai Besi

Adapting green practices, The Leafz merges green technology and art to create a serene and healthy environment for its residents. The Leafz is a breakthrough in design and functionality, adapting the marvels of technology in the many aspects of our lives. Imagine a home that indulges your every whim and notion. From world-class facilities that are available right at your doorstep, to breath-taking landscape visual experiences. The landscape concept is inspired by the morphology and anatomy of leaves, of which the midrib and venation are highly emphasised with simple lines and textures. The entrance structure is designed as the vein of the bird nest fern, with the carriageway design highlight resembling the veins of a banana leaf. A linear park, designed in the shape of a midrib of a leaf, is an elevated boardwalk, with the arrangement of shrubs in a vein-like position. Both ends of the boardwalk have two small leaf plazas. The 50-metre infinity lap pool at level 28 overlooks the city skyline. A leaf shaped viewing deck with a glass floor in the sky gym, illuminated in blue, makes the sky deck an outstanding feature from afar. Return to nature and indulge in a flourishing life at The Leafz.

The landscape design and planning are well incorporated in harmony with the surrounding water and greenery, which create a symphony of nature. Nothing can offer the rejuvenation experience more than this development can; coming home is like entering a retreat that provides a rewarding sensory experience. It is a haven, an organic journey, which energises our senses. The development offers six types of sensory experience in terms of wellness for all ages, consisting of Wellness of Sound, Visual, Flavour, Sensory, Being and Aroma.

The Address Bukit Jambul

Far from the ordinary, yet near to everything else. The Address is strategically tucked in a quiet corner of a township of Bukit Jambul. The concept for the entire development was driven and inspired by architecture of the natural world - ‘the habitat of Beavers’. The landscape design focus is on the creation of an ideal, peaceful and sustainable living space, surrounded by expansive sky, lush greenery and serene waterfalls. Learning from industrious beavers, the entrance gateway holds tangibly patterned metaphors, much like a magnificent beaver dam, and serves to welcome and secure access to the living spaces beyond. Central water bodies, comprised of a swimming pool, children’s pool, and jacuzzi area, are implicitly interpreted as water banks with vibrant activities conducive to life. Existing exclusive boutique architecture, interpreted as a number of beaver lodges, have been built ecologically on the adjacent shore. The circulation and connectivity of the spaces resembles the slides and channels that beavers make to enter and leave the water. The swimming pool is designed to be a natural formation within the ecosystem. It resembles ecosystems such as wetlands which are created as a result of the construction of a beaver’s dam. A raised terrain along the edges of the pool, slows runoff water from the pool and reflects the natural formation of the local ecosystem.

Globalisation and the convergence of communication technologies have blurred the lines between how people live and work. Enter Urban 360, a ground breaking mixed commercial development project, distinguished by its unique approach to creating dual-purpose spaces splendidly suited to serve both the needs for a new work lifestyle, and a cosy sanctuary. Urban 360 is a new urban abode that offers extensive landscape spaces with ample facilities on the podium and rooftop level. The landscape design places multi-activity spaces onto a single floor, via the ingenious allocation of several split levels which seamlessly connect at different corners of the property. Being either an active space or passive zone, the design is successfully created for users in different age groups. It is an unparalleled urban oasis with a rooftop sky garden and panoramic views of Kuala Lumpur, designed for urbanites.

Ameera Residence Mutiara Heights

Ameera Residence at Mutiara Heights is a serene lifestyle development with lush landscaping; a home where one can breathe in fresh air and revel in the bounty of mother nature by being close to the Jeloh Forest Reserve. This exclusive residence is surrounded by gardens and recreational spaces on the ground level. Being a site located in a quarry area, most of the granite used has been recycled as wall fencing, with the landscape design blending perfectly with the newly developed Mutiara Heights neighbourhood. At Ameera, each corner of the landscaped space is where you can recharge and rejuvenate. Here, landscape design is allocated for different activities at various parts of the development to cater for both active and passive recreational needs. To further enhance the simplistic feel of urban living, the application of lines and ovals punctuate numerous locations within the landscaped plaza or green corridor and offer an interesting visual treat and create interesting functional spaces within. The Haven is endowed with a variety of habitats, both natural and man-made, and aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. It is also home to many beautiful and unique ethno-botanic flora prevalent in the natural habitat of the limestone hills in the Kinta Valley. Sky High Living Jalan Ampang

The name Dedaun, which means ‘leaves’ in Malay, was specially conceived to reminisce and to celebrate the idyll and serenity of the lush gardens of the 70’s; a time when the urban sprawl we take for granted today was as yet unknown. Dedaun is a low rise development of 38 limited edition luxury residences intimately set in two interlocking L-shaped blocks, encircling an inner courtyard. The design translates the concept ideas into forms and through careful selection of suitable hard and softscape materials, evokes the image of a bygone era. As such, the organisation of its landscape spaces emphasises the front garden experience of the period, while also creating private garden escapes as necessary antidotes for today’s urban living. A traditional red clay brickwork courtyard that is in-laid with grass enhances the nostalgic feeling of yesterday. At nightfall, lighting niches built into the brick wall provide a romantic rustic charm. In keeping with the concept, 70’s style garden swings have been specially fabricated for the playground area. A fun timber tree house is built around an Andira surinamensis tree to complement and strengthen the character of the development.

A Treasure Trove Singapore

A Treasure Trove is a unique development that consists of modern apartments as well as conserved colonial villa as a clubhouse in the heart of Punggol New Town, Singapore. With its lush green oasis, the main landscape deck sits high above the ground, elevated like a green island with a number of gardens developed for principle use and enjoyment by local residents. The development was designed with a rich nature and the majority of the green spaces planted with drought tolerant tropical plants that add distinctive colours and textures to the gardens. Relax within a beautifully landscaped, resort-like environment, complete with various pool seatings; this area is specifically designed to encourage interaction among residents and has become an important social area for many. The pools are designed as magnificent facilities as well as to be focal points when viewed from all levels of this property. The main focus of the entire development is the Colonial-Malay Kampong Style Villa, ’Maltida House’. It has been innovatively conserved and converted to a clubhouse. One of the key components of the design are the Malay motifs and patterns on the paving and ceiling that reflect the colonial style external facade. Visually iconic and modern, Westside II offers a branded residence sanctuary at Desa ParkCity. It brings new meaning to the human experience of nature. What separates Westside II from basic conventional condominiums is the theme of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Two Parks-Two Acres-Two Iconsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. The landscape design distinguishes two important iconic landscape features which exemplify, with thoughtful consideration, the human experience within the tight constraint of two acres. Two tree house structures are built at the facility decks while the two tier decking structure encourages a free flowing play space below. This dual level system adds vertical drama to the horizontal plane landscapes, while seamlessly connecting both tree houses together with a unique timber sky bridge, allowing 360 degree views difficult to find elsewhere. The second iconic feature is the organically curved Water Moat, located at the ground floor. The shape is inspired by the flowing essence of water, moulded uniquely around the high columns as to cleanse the air and reduce micro-humidity. In addition, the Water Moat serves as an outdoor lounge room for all to enjoy as the sensual planting and refreshing splash of water energises the senses of a secluded and private home environment.

Three residential towers, inspired by vernacular Mediterranean style architecture, rise up from a series of receding landscape podiums and transform into an intricate, multi-layer façade. Waterview landscape elements depict the adventure of a yacht sailing boldly upon the ocean with only the company of the stars, the encounter of Calypso Island and marine life, which make the adventure one of a kind. The educational township of Nilai lacked urban mixed developments, and thus the idea of Starz Valley was conceived. Cognisant of the current economic trends and cost of living, the development set out to fulfil the demands and lifestyle needs of the working and student population, at an accessible price point. Starz Valley consists of serviced apartments, premium commercial lots and a SOHO office block fronting the entrance of one of the most well-known private universities in Malaysia, INTI International University. Breezeway Desa ParkCity

Breezeway, located as a landmark at DesaPark City Town Center, is planned as a Courtyard Parkhome and Garden Condominium. Imprinted with tranquil courtyards, linear parks and a deck for recreational facilities. Due to the architecture, the development is punctuated by a series of green corridors acting as breezeways and heat swales. The design approach taken was to funnel the experience of nature and wind through the garden courtyards and larger linear groves to each residentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s doorstep. Three Breezeways were created: Type one, the Groves, is designed to allow the sound of trees, rustling and swaying to and fro, to enhance the living spaces. Type two, the Breezeway is an articulated semi hard courtyard space intertwined with vertical trees and a series of reflective rain shelter walkways and pavilions in an articulated setting. Type three, the Linear Breezeway at the deck, completes the northern side of the landscape spaces.

Debunga Residensi Ukay Perdana

The valley site of Debunga Residensi is surrounded by the natural hilly slopes of Kemensah forest hills. Hidden as a jewel among the rich flow of refreshing waterfalls and brooks, its surrounding elements have become a signature inspiration in designing the Central Park landscape. A 440m length linear park becomes the centre-grid composition, knitting the semi-detached homes and cul-de-sacs together. The north and south axis park features a clubhouse, connected by water linkages in the form of canals, cascades and springs, reflective of Kemensah waterfalls. The park ingredients are akin to a painterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s eye with a show gallery showcasing a collection of surrounding landscape wild flowers that bloom and bud in line with the hill environment. This design is also reminiscent of Monetâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s garden paintings.

10 Damansara Heights is 8 generous-sized bungalow and 2 duplex units, arranged around a courtyard. Each unit has a discreet connection to this shared recreational space, which comprises swimming pool attendant deck areas and clubhouse facilities. The houses are arranged in three terraces and become progressively larger as one moves up the green terrace, culminating in a duplex penthouse atop the clubhouse that overlooks the entire development and part of the green hill. The landscape design draws upon this fashionable modern contemporary design vocabulary. The placement of green patches creates a cozy ambience within the garden. The centerpiece of the development is a large swimming pool with water weir, surrounded by a cascading landscape profile, giving an articulate design to the site topography and to the buildings. Modern contemporary influences blend together with the clean architectural setting.

Elevated Gardens Mozart, Symphony Hills

The Elevated Gardens at Mozart, Symphony Hills, is a one of a kind design that separates vehicular traffic from human circulation for safety purposes. Link bridges connect a series of walkway decks to the common areas which allow direct access to the residential units. The different phases of this development ensure seamless connectivity. The landscape design spreads over two levels with connection to the pocket gardens at the ground level through staircases from the decks. At ground level, pocket gardens are designed as focal points of the different parcels of the precinct. These gardens, equipped with gazebos and benches, can be utilised as gathering areas for the residents.

Lepironia Gardens Setia Eco Glades

Lepironia Gardens, located at the south of the development, was inspired by Lepironia articulata, a slender reed which prevents erosion by stabilising the edge and base of ponds and waterways. It is able to absorb toxins and heavy metals in the water. Lepironia articulata is widely used in water quality and wetlands run-off management and for aesthetic purposes. The Lepironia Gardens were designed to encapsulate a sense of peace, calm and tranquility within the development. Thus, a fresh man-made waterway was carefully designed as the main attraction. The design enhances the value of the entire site by replanting original site vegetation partly from transplanted trees and wetland plants. Native resident fish were released into the completed waterways in order to create a balanced ecosystem. The Orchard Gardens are designed to ensure bird & insect integration with plants for food and nectar which invite butterflies who fly gently throughout this lush garden. The Lepironia Gardens were crafted with an eco-landscape approach, which inpires human integration with nature. This approach is not only focused on the importance of conservation and preservation but also creates awareness among the community about the need for a sustainable environment.

Garden of 8 Fountains Setia Eco Park

Garden of 8 Fountains; the main features of the park are the distinctive zones with 8 unique fountain themes, such as the Fountain of Union, Fountain of Love, Fountain of Roses, Fountain of Wings and Fountain of Light, to name a few. Located in Precinct 2, Setia Eco Park, the park with a man-made waterway which serves as a natural retention pond is developed as a recreational park. The garden design serves as a communal recreation space which emphasises the beautiful local greenery in both flowering plants and tropical fruit trees. This garden provides contact point avenues for the community to spend their leisure time with families and friends for resting and picnics. The continuous pathways, easily accessible from any direction, allow the residents to stroll or cycle, and are convenient for the community as a whole. It has now turned into a favourite park for the surrounding neighbourhood to fulfill their recreational needs.

Gamuda Garden Vietnam

Gamuda Garden is a 75ha landscape project in a residential zone, strategically located within one of the largest new master planned townships in Vietnam. The new neighbourhood is also embraced by one of the largest city gardens in the country. This 320ha city garden comprises lakes, islands, waterways and thematic zones which provide a uniquely lush backdrop for the residents. Together with community amenities, including a resort club, international school, nurseries, shops, business center and F&B zone, the development represents an unrivalled comprehensive lifestyle concept. The landscape design creates a natural harmony between the built environment and the natural created landscape. The meandering roads and open spaces that define the community transform into forests. The creation of a country retreat is further strengthened by the careful selection of plant species, hard landscape materials, site furniture, and signage. Arroyo Garden is a low-density, residential paradise village. It has been created based on the Setia EcoHill ‘Live Green!’ DNA lifestyle blueprint. In order to cultivate a sustainable and holistic living experience at Setia EcoHill, the landscape is designed to bring nature to the doorsteps, and elevate property values at the same time. Arroyo Garden’s unprecedented landscape is now flourishing with recreational facilities that satisfy all types of physical activity needs. Natural terrain with water flow channels and streams have been upgraded into a beautiful series of lakes that cool the surrounding area. These waterways have been integrated into beautiful landscape concept parks to enhance the overall development - for recreational and relaxing, as well as acting as a buffer between the road and the homes. Themed gardens have been built and provide unique experiences, namely Rainbow Creek, Angels Cascade, Serene Corner and Woodland Park.

Tropicana Heights Central Park Kajang

Central Park, Tropicana Heights, Kajang, was the former Kajang Golf and Country Resort. It was one of the most popular destination for golfers in the Klang Valley. With its pristine, landscaped scenery and mature plants, the golf course has been transformed into a new residential parcel which preserves the existing mature trees with new elements in the landscape design. The park is going through a facelift, with chosen existing trees being transplanted from their original place to new locations throughout the park. Pathways, waterways and social nodes are also placed strategically to transform this once quiet putting green into a recreational public park for the use of the community at large.

The Park Eco Sky Kuala Lumpur

Located in a prominent section of Jalan Kuching, Kuala Lumpur, is a 4 acre piece of green reserve land, which belongs to both the Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur Land Office and Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL). This space has been adopted and transformed from an under-utilised green reserve into a public park, as part of the CSR Project. ‘Laman Bandar’ or Urban Garden, is Kuala Lumpur’s latest new patch of green space, flourishing under the mature forest canopy, and catering for recreational and outdoor activities for city dwellers. The garden is designed with a rich bio-diversity of flora and herbs to showcase the advantages of plants for health and medicinal purposes. The garden emphasises ecologically friendly features via the introduction of thick under-growth plants. These protect the soil surface from erosion, create permeable pathways, and, at the same time, create a sanctuary for small wildlife. The improved space also increases safety via well-lit walkways for urban dwellers to use at all times.

Inspiration Park East Ledang

Inspiration Park is a low-density, up-market residential enclave located in Precinct 6 of Nusajaya, Johor. The landscape design concept celebrates the gardens and diversity by introducing vibrant colours, forms, textures and promotes an ecologically sound environment. The main landscape area is a Linear Park, which is centrally located, and enjoys direct links to the main entrance of the lake area. The design is highlighted with a series of curves and loops, made of different materials, which form patterns along the pavement. A multipurpose plaza forms the centre of the park, overlaid and linked with walkways and a reflexology path. Shelters, designed in tune with the architectural scheme of the nearby houses, allocated near the entrance plaza, are equipped with gabion benches that add a raw touch to the park. Here at Inspiration Park, 33% of the overall residential enclave comprises not only the park areas but also buffer zones designated along the boundaries. As a whole, this space encompasses approximately 6.3 acres of inter-connected green areas that soften the rigidity and repetition of the overall housing layout. Setia Alam Urban Park Bandar Setia Alam

Nestled within the commercial development of Setia Taipan and the highrise residential development, this 1km long urban park provides a space for the community to meet and relax and also partake of the green network and the waterways which connect to other community hubs. Setia Alam Urban Park is designed to be a part of the green finger network and waterways of Bandar Setia Alam. This environmentallyfriendly development is in line with MASMA (Manual Saliran Mesra Alam Malaysia) requirements with unsightly concrete monsoon drains being replaced with calm waterways, wide, gentle slopes, and meandering earth swale, as well as wetlands. Each area can be utilised for landscape and recreational purposes. Designed for both passive and active use, the park is sectionalised, with an open plaza in the centre. Towards the south east are the play areas, terraces, a basketball court and exercise stations, while towards the north-west sector are the wetlands, which is part of the water retention pond, designed to provide walking trails, pavilions, and be a sanctuary for local wildlife.

Rumah Tinggi Eco Park Singapore

The Rumah Tinggi Eco Park design takes advantage of its natural setting with the existing topography, vegetation and wildlife creating an environmental themed garden. It promotes eco-friendly design approaches by retaining trees on site and minimising the disturbance to the existing terrain. The key design concept here is to maintain the site character while enhancing the function and quality of the park. A variety of facilities, which include fitness stations, playgrounds, shelters, picnic lawns and seating decks have been introduced along the track to create opportunities for community and family bonding. The activity areas allow users of different ages to interact with nature while pursuing their leisure activities. On environmental features, the rain garden at the entrance plaza serves its purpose for filtration with the provision of a bio-retention pond underneath. Plant species are selected with care as priority is given to those which require minimal maintenance. Thus, native varieties are preferred. A wide variety of planting is selected to create the ambience of a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;forestâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; within the urban context of residential and industrial areas.

Ethnobotany Park Taman Botani Putrajaya

‘Ethnobotany’ means studying the interaction between humans and plants which involves many aspects, including medicine, food sources, economics and culture. The development concept for Putrajaya Ethnobotany Park is a continuation of the original concept of the Taman Botani development. The park is an undulating area with gently sloping sections which consist of large lawns. Stretching over 12.7 acres, the park is the home of a collection of different species of plants for study and scientific research, conservation, exhibition and educational purposes. There are 5 themes of plant collections on display, such as; Lawn & Graminaceae Garden, Malaysian Herbs & Medicinal Plants Collection, Plant Conservatory, Zingiberales Garden and Forest Fringe & Aboriginal Medicinal Plants Collection. This space is designed to create and preserve the plants’ natural habitats.

Metamorphosis Park Setia Eco Cascadia

Metamorphosis Park is a 15 acre park which uses the butterfly life cycle as its core concept. The elements are reflected in the landforms in the soft and hard landscape. Butterflies are unique creatures, astounding people with the miraculous parts of their short life, known as metamorphosis. The essentiality of butterflies are integrated into the design of the whole park with the shape of the lakes resembling an adult butterfly. The stages of the butterfly life cycle are reflected in the design concept of the pavilions, shelter, walls & plaza. The water bodies, used as retention ponds for water catchment, transform into recreational lakes for the local community. This adds aesthetic value to the entire development. The lakes, with their butterfly shape, further strengthen the concept and are visible from higher ground. P10 Pocket Parks Setia Eco Park

Phase 10, part of Precinct 5, is located to the south of a gated and guarded residential section of Setia Eco Park. There is a series of four pocket parks built within this phase to accommodate residentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; needs; Universal Community Garden, Curvilinear Community Garden, Public Art Community Garden and Woodpark Community Garden. The pocket parks were built with different design concepts yet with one basic philosophy; to create a space for interaction and leisure for residents with a myriad of ambient settings such as contemporary, woodland feel, artistic expression, and style, which are amongst the features highlighted in this series of pocket spaces.

Wetland Park Kota Kemuning

Kota Kemuning Wetland Park is approximately 3km long and occupies some 27 acres of land along the frontage of Kota Kemuning. The design approach applies value engineering to a proposed concrete drain, transforming it into a free-form natural retention-based wetland system. The wetland system incorporates a series of inter-linked open channel ponds with adjacent flood and retention plains that traverse the power lines, where pylon cables are located for drainage reserve, gas line reserve and local authority requirements. There are minimal man-made interferences, and nature takes its course by allowing and supporting biomass interaction among the vegetation and animals. The wetlands is now a major wildlife sanctuary. Proposing an approach that was both economically and environmentally sustainable allows a desirable win-win scenario to take place.

EcoHill Parc Setia EcoHill

EcoHill Parc has redefined the sense of comfort and affection that people establish with park spaces. This creates memories of unique experiences for generations to come. The panoramic view from the parkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s highest point overlooks the surrounding natural tropical forest, mountains, hills and township. At the heart of the Setia EcoHill township is EcoHill Parc, an 11-acre park situated at the highest point of the township which has been open to the public since 2013. Today, the park has become a popular destination for the young and young at heart, drawn by fresh air, breathtaking views and best of all, the entertaining and educational landscape. Currently, the EcoHill Parc is the second most visited destination in Semenyih, next to the famous Broga Hill.

Univillage Forest Park Semenyih

Univillage is an incomparable modern residence, purpose-designed to cater for student living in a vibrant and green environment, adjacent to the University of Nottingham Malaysia. Univillage is a sustainable development, designed to create a calm ambiance. Students can easily access the green forest park and tranquil setting, away from the classrooms and lecture halls. This forest park, which consists of pathways and exercise stations, is designed and built to serve students as a relaxation space and a place in which to gain inspiration. The concept creates a forest ecosystem with cascading water features, ponds and streams flowing through the densely planted garden. In two different corners, pavilions are located as resting and study areas for students, away from stuffy classrooms. An undulating pathway leads visitors on a casual stroll, surrounded by tropical plants and flowers, with exercise stations located at strategic points. Earth mounds are also constructed to create an interesting land profile and form quiet, secluded spaces throughout the garden.

City Orchard Park Kuala Lumpur

Located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur in leafy Jalan Bellamy, the City Orchard Park is well known amongst the local residents. Set on a ridge, the steeply sloping site features distant views of Kuala Lumpur to the south-west. The park aims to promote locally grown productive orchards, provide education about the different fruit tree species that made their way to Malaysia during the early days of trade, promote urban gardening, showcase sustainable landscape design, and demonstrate the execution of effective and well-detailed design elements.

Sungai Buloh Recreational Park Pasir Gudang

Sg. Buloh Reccreational Park (Laman Rekreasi Sg. Buloh) was built in 1995. With an area of 34.9 acres, the park was upgraded in 2012, yet maintains the natural characteristics and serves as a buffer zone for the surrounding urban area. The development of this third largest park in Pasir Gudang attracts the community for recreation and interaction. Within the park, existing trees and gazetted heritage trees are preserved to serve as an urban green lung. This park is suitable for research and education for students and visitors alike who can learn about flora and fauna. The fitness and exercise facilities here also contribute to the city environment and community well-being.

Perdana Botanical Garden Kuala Lumpur

The Perdana Botanical Garden, formerly known as Taman Tasik Perdana, or Lake Gardens, is situated in the Heritage Park of Kuala Lumpur. It has always been a part of the green lung of the city and has a history of over a decade. Originally created as part of a recreational park, this space is planted with collections of tropical plants and has been rehabilitated and turned into a Botanical Garden. The gardens not only house botanical collections but also features that give visitors the feeling of being in a tropical rainforest, despite being in the middle of a bustling metropolis. The first phase involved the rehabilitation of the main core of the garden and the addition of various collections and features. The garden is unique in that it has the elements of a show garden, the ambiance of a tropical rainforest, and the serenity of a getaway in the middle of a city. The second phase of the transformation brings in the necessary elements of a Botanical Garden, the Herbarium, the Library and Visitor Center. Other areas, such as the Orchid Garden, and the Hibiscus Garden, will be enhanced and rehabilitated at the same time. CleanTech One is a ‘seed’ building and a showcase for Cleantech Business Park in Singapore. This Green Mark Platinum Award certified building ensures every aspect of design utilises the sustainable philosophy of delivering more, whilst using less. Designed as a compact R&D cubic capsule, nestled in dense vegetation, the purity and simplicity of CleanTech One’s form shines in contrast against the green backdrop. The design philosophy is to have an holistic approach which seeks to balance the environmental, economic and social aspects of a sustainable design. To ‘achieve more with less’, that is more productivity with less energy, more energy with less carbon, and more economic growth with less impact, is the driving force of the design. The design places the building as part of the existing environment; a seamless connection with the central green core, achieved with iconic distinction. The landscape design approach is to showcase the development as a practical demonstration of sustainability which is applicable to everyday life, by reinforcing forest themes within the building.

River of Life Heritage Quarter Kuala Lumpur

The River of Life Master Plan creates a framework for transformation, regeneration and growth by preserving Kuala Lumpur’s past with a renewed outlook for the area through waterfront revitalisation. The River of Life Early Works Package (EWP) is part of the first phase of the larger River of Life Master Plan that aims to regenerate 10.7 km of the Klang and Gombak Rivers. With a focus on water cleaning, river master planning and city beautification, the River of Life project aims to create desirable places with quality streetscape elements that are both durable and aesthetically pleasing. This design aims to increase pedestrian movement through shaded streets that open up for pedestrian use during events. In addition, traffic congestion is eased through rationalised bus circulation. A focus on water sensitive urban design in the streetscape and landscape helps to restore the environment, and mitigates flooding through improved localised drainage. The project covers Heritage Quarter, in the heart of old China Town, along High Street (now known as Jalan Tun H.S. Lee). The project further demonstrates conservation efforts while activating a previously underutilised area. Urban infill throughout the district activates the pockets of dead space around the highly attractive tourist areas, creating more contemporary nodes such as art installations, informative storytelling signage, and a renewed streetscape, creating a place which connects landmarks, reveals heritage and provides a place for the local community, whilst celebrating Malaysian identity; past, present, and future. The River of Life project identity and signage system has delivered a sophisticated suite of elements that informs and directs users, coordinates multiple character areas and creates vibrant, engaging spaces. The River of Life project site covers a 10km stretch along the Klang and Gombak Rivers in central Kuala Lumpur. The project is developing and improving the physical environment of the river and surrounding urban areas. An integral part of the project is the identity of the site as well as implementation of a signage system and heritage trails which help to create a walkable environment for tourists and locals to experience Malaysian heritage, culture and public spaces, unique to Kuala Lumpur. The identity and signage design has helped to deliver the overall vision of the River of Life site to connect, activate, revitalise, and enliven old districts of downtown Kuala Lumpur. Cocooned by adjacent buildings and other dense development, this is a secret sanctuary, an overture to the signature future residential tower development that will take place here. Located in a hyper urban setting, where daily traffic gridlock is commonplace and where the built environment is a hodgepodge of old residential clusters interspersed with bustling business activities, the community is indeed in dire need of a place that provides urban relief. This unique sales gallery, provides that; a green sanctuary, a hidden gem ready to be (re)discovered by the community. HighPark Residences sales gallery is a fluid, transformable space that changes day, by night, and weekly, when injected with sales activities and seasonally when community get-together activities are organised. It is an urban hideaway, setting the tone for other developments in the area to follow.

The Saujana Kuala Lumpur

The central courtyard of Block B and C at the Saujana, Kuala Lumpur, is having a facelift to rejuvenate the hotel’s surroundings. This is in line with the hotel’s image and re-branding, and to give a make-over to the outdated design which lacks energy and is considered high maintenance. From this design brief, the team worked with the concept of ‘Landscape Rejuvenation’, to upgrade, reinstate and rejuvenate the area by replacing unwanted plants, introducing low maintenance varieties and upgrading the overall area. Block B was given a new concept of modernity while Block C incorporates a checkered layout of patterns and shapes upon the ground.

IOI City Mall is a mixed-use development with landscape serving as a unifying element that ties the various components of the sprawling development together. The design integrates landscape into all aspects of the development, allowing the end users the opportunity to enjoy various activities e.g. shopping, working, dining, socialising and entertaining in a generous garden setting. The main landscape and outdoor gardens, located at the south entry of the mall are lined on one side with alfresco dining, which opens up to a central water lagoon. A palm court and an outdoor plaza for holding events and staging performances are part of the programming space, with additional retail pods throughout the garden which take advantage of the beautiful setting.

Bintaro Lifestyle Centre at Bintaro Jaya, Jakarta, has become a very popular place to visit with friends, business associates, and families. It is financially successful and self-sustaining with a mix of uses and activities. Al-fresco dining, lush green landscape with activity areas, and interactive elements make it a destination for the enjoyment of all ages. Soft and hard landscape is adequately balanced, providing the users with a comfortable environment. Lush tropical planting softens the harshness of the paved paths. The sustainability approach is maintained through the project by integration of water treatment areas and connection to the existing river with buffer planting decreasing noise and enhancing biodiversity.

Novelty Bizcentre Singapore

Novelty Bizcentre is nestled and strategically located amidst Paya Lebar Industrial Hub. The area is surrounded by a number of increasingly new industrial projects. The development is geared to engage end users and provide a conducive working environment with common facilities that brand the development as a lifestyle hub. The design borrows green spaces from external planting, eliminates the perimeter physical wall and extends visual barriers to allow users to appreciate a wider and more open green frontage. Green lungs are added to the building on the 5th floor and provide a double volume sky terrace. The sky terrace consists of lush landscaping and tree planting, as well as lifestyle features such as a gym, swimming pool and jacuzzi. Having features in the midst of the building promotes physical wellbeing and creates a healthier naturally cross-ventilated space for users to enjoy.

The Clubhouse, or known as the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Opera Houseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, is designed to be a spectacular floating feature that exudes an exclusive resort ambience as it sprawls horizontally along a waterway, into breath taking floating pavilions. Each pavilion is a unique recreational space, connected by a serpentine walkway. Residents and visitors alike are tempted to luxuriate in the infinity pool, soothe their senses in landscaped ponds and sensory gardens, or seek inspiration on a floating gazebo, while listening to the sounds of cascading water. For a change of pace, the wet playground is available for children who wish to splash around, and a gym is available for those who want a healthy workout. These include amenities such as a pool and jacuzzi, a playground, a sun deck, an herb garden, putting greens, a yoga deck, and tennis courts, all of which will surely keep the residents occupied. Philea Resort & Spa, Melaka, is a delightful haven in the making. Here, one of the country’s premier 5-star resorts lies in the shade of forest giants as well as the faultless flow of waterfalls. Rustic architecture with pristine greenery, evening skies woven with colour, and a deep sense of serenity reserved exclusively for hotel guests. Located a stone’s throw away from the Ayer Keroh interchange, Philea Resort & Spa, Melaka, is the first and largest log cabin resort in Malaysia, consisting of 66 units of log houses with 180 rooms, 19 suites and 2 villas. The site is located in a charming valley, complete with a multi-tiered terrain, surrounded by an existing rubber estate. As a result of location, the project was designed to flow seamlessly along the undulating contours of the land. Water elements abound in the center of the site due to the nearby creek. As well as being a natural feature, the stream’s other purpose is to harness the ground water and manage the overflow discharge during times of heavy water flow. The selection of finishes and materials plays an important role in creating the design intention, which has a more rural feel. Natural elements which blend with the natural setting of the environment have been carefully placed in the creation of the hardscape elements. In addition, the plant selection is based on a 50-50 ratio of common and rare species in order to instill surprise and inspiration for the visitor. Country Heights, Kajang 161 Eclectic M., a country home features a fusion of Mediterranean and Malaysian landscape, giving rise to a new lexicon in Landscape Architecture â&#x20AC;&#x201C; The Eclectic Malaysian Landscape. Materialising a home ownerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dream landscape has always been the utmost priority, and now, there is a home set within tropical landscape that keeps a pinch of a Mediterranean feel to compliment the architecture. The landscape shall be part of their home, giving them comfort and a nostalgic memoire. Water and life are the core ideas of this landscape with the house embraced by lush native vegetation, with a small creek running from the rear garden to the front of the house. As a result, the ecological system has been restored with a strong emphasis on sustainability. Old furniture, railway sleepers, cast iron grilles, and old balustrades are salvaged to create intricate landscape details and used as ornamental features. The material palette gives rise to a rusticated look to the landscape.

Legoland Malaysia Resort Iskandar

LEGOLAND® Malaysia is the first of this brand theme park in South East Asia, covering over 75 acres in the heart of Iskandar, Malaysia. The park opened in September 2012, and caters to a projected annual attendance of over 1.2 million people. The overall planning and concept for LEGOLAND® Malaysia follows the successful model for LEGOLAND® Deutschland. The planning and design ensures easy accessibility for guests to navigate throughout the park. An adaptation of the existing concept design and the detail of LEGOLAND® sits within the local context while maintaining its essence as a family theme park. LEGOLAND® Malaysia’s site context, with its undulating topography, was a challenge for the design to ensure accessibility for normal and disabled guests. The existing conditions drove the master plan to respond in a dynamic yet sensitive manner. The master plan is designed to nestle into the existing hill slope while focusing on guest comfort as they move through the park. With LEGO brands, knowledge of toys and manipulation has made family activities more fun and comes with educational value. All attractions and features are enclosed together with lush green surroundings and well planned circulation where all the areas are physically and visually grasped. The settings of the park features are well planned in a circular loop with LEGO models showing the prominent city in the world, called ‘Mini Land’, being a centerpiece of the attraction. Playground Set Aloft The Alice Smith School Kuala Lumpur

The Alice Smith School holistic approach towards academic education and social development gave rise to a new master plan to enhance the infrastructure; both the buildings and the landscape. The Alice Smith School is situated on the slopes of Petaling Hills, Kuala Lumpur. This British International School provides a conducive environment for physical and cognitive learning and development. The landscape has become a place for fun and learning, and adds a new identity for the school and community. The success of the landscape lies in the concept of compartmentalising small spaces to create a smooth flow of functional spaces along the school entries. The landscape sets the playground aloft on higher ground, on the roof, and exploits horizontal spaces for fun and function. Compartmentalisation for full utilisation of space is the key aspect of this landscape design with all spaces strung together with a simple language of planting design. Majlis Bandaraya Ipoh eZe3 or Easy Electronic Tree Data Collection is an innovation of Majlis Bandaraya Ipoh on tree inventory and data collection for the city. Over the years, issues such as the enforcement of tree protection have become difficult due to lack of information about tree data in the city. Conventional tree data collection consumed longer time, manpower and paper work. This has caused the information of tree data to be unavailable to the public. Through the invention of GPS and mobile technology, a new user-friendly app is here to execute the data collection and tagging of each tree using a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Geo Taggingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; method from the location, updated real time. The information is then displayed in the form of GIS (Geographic Information System).

Perbadanan Putrajaya

Program Membina Hijau Putrajaya is one of the programs to make Putrajaya a Green Technology City under the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Environmental and Landscape Committee. This initiative objective is to foster environmental awareness in the community with the target groups being children and youth from different backgrounds. Currently, environmental issues have become global issues and our young generation must be exposed to the ideas and knowledge regarding environment, sustainability and conservation. In this program, Perbadanan Putrajaya and delivery partners, Putrajaya Holdings Sdn. Bhd., and Yayasan Anak Warisan Alam (YAWA), inculcate environment-loving principles to the children and youth with the hope that their future actions take into consideration effects of sustainable development. This program is carried out through Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) by Putrajaya Holdings Sdn. Bhd. Since 2010, most of the activities implemented under this programme are through Green Fingers and an entrepreneurship approach. Such an approach is to foster greater awareness of environmental protection through tree planting programmes and applying the values of entrepreneurship, which have always prioritised environmental care.

Royal Floria Putrajaya Anjung FLORIA, Putrajaya

Royal FLORIA Putrajaya is an annual Putrajaya hallmark event that welcomes visitors to the city with an abundance of floral blooms and gardening ideas. This has become one of the most anticipated events in Putrajaya’s own calendar of events with close to 1 million visitors annually. It is a meeting place for garden enthusiasts, landscape architects and designers, retailers and contractors, as well as government and corporate sectors. It is truly an event for all ages and those who are concerned about the landscape and the environment. The Royal FLORIA Putrajaya flower and garden festival has gained tremendously in popularity after eight editions. The show has the potential to develop and spread its wings even further as a platform for the import and export of flowers and horticultural products, networking, information sharing, and research, to promote the local landscape, horticulture and floral industry. Following the elevation of the show to Royal status in 2014, Royal FLORIA Putrajaya received another recognition with the ‘Joyce White, World Flower Council International Award of Excellence’. This year, the Royal FLORIA Putrajaya received further accolades with the Green Achievement Award from the Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia (ILAM) which commemorates the effort of promoting and showcasing the landscape architectural profession to the general public.

14 Beach Villas Datai, Langkawi

The Datai, Langkawi, is a five-star resort hotel, situated on a ridge within lush rainforest by the sea. The resort design is extremely sensitive to the fragile environment in which it is set, and demonstrates how a fairly large intervention can be built to intertwine with tropical rainforest. Thus, the new extension of this 14 villa project, carries the same design philosophy. The extension project of the 14 villas is perceived as building a niche stay that brings people closer to nature and its beauty, surrounded by rainforest and beach. Preserve the flora and fauna, bask in the tranquility, and the revealed mystery of a 10 million year old rainforest and be captivated by up-close encounters with rare wildlife species such as flying squirrels and colugos. Strewn over 750 hectares, nestled in the very heart of the rainforest, the rustic stand-alone villas lure visitors with an intimate nature experience. The philosophy of the landscape study is to ensure the design is in line with nature, promoting symbiosis between the forest ambiance and villa landscape setting. The importance of preservation and conservation of the existing rainforest and other natural resources is the greatest asset for the development.

Tropical Rainforest Living Collection Banun, Perak

The Tropical Rainforest Living Collection Banun provides a unique opportunity to create a new park from a blank canvas and set aspirations for Perak. The exploration drew us into the wild forests of Peninsular Malaysia and key points of interest within the vast landscape. The balance between the natural and built environments must be delicately articulated in order to maintain the rich biodiversity within Amanjaya Forest Reserve. There are 5 key goals: • Creating a living seed collection of forest species • Providing a new habitat corridor under the highway • Conservation through responsible tourism • Raising awareness through environment conservation • Planting for the future Environmental analysis was done for constructing a wildlife viaduct. Efforts have been made to address habitat fragmentation and wildlife road kills, including: • Setting up animal crossing signages • Animal corridors • Construction of animal viaducts or underpasses

The River of Life Master Plan aims to rejuvenate and revitalise the Klang & Gombak Rivers and surrounding neighbourhoods of Kuala Lumpur to bring people back to the riverfront. The framework for the River of Life Master Plan is based on the principles of Connect, Activate, Revitalise, Enliven (C.A.R.E.) which re-establish the lost connections of urban fabric with the river as well as from one district to another; the goals, objectives, and initiatives proposed all fall into one or more of these themes. Outlining a bold vision for development, River of Life unites the city physically, economically, and socially to make it the cornerstone of 21st Century Malaysia. Quality open spaces are fundamental to establishing the river as world class. The river forms the spine to a network of places and spaces of regional and local significance, with the surrounding areas creating the visual backdrop to the city and signalling different characters.

The open space network includes hubs of specifically identified natural resources or open space and manmade features or destinations that influence the development of the network.

DISTRICT 1 ECO VILLAGE

The initiatives and proposals in the masterplan will benefit from efficient and easy connection links. Connecting the river edge with the rest of the city fabric will be facilitated with green connections that provide attractive and comfortable pedestrian oriented routes that link to green open spaces or other destinations. Initiatives to form green connectors could lead to pedestrianised walkways, improved roads and those with integrated pedestrian walks. The proposal integrates a number of green connectors into the urban fabric easing accessibility and providing opportunity to the pedestrian to engage into the green network. Such initiative shall improve the pedestrian experience and promote internal connections, reducing vehicular traffic and making destinations more reachable.

International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) Due to the current issues of urban storm water problems such as flash floods and pollution, this project realises that Malaysia has many ex-mining ponds which can be utilised as sustainable, integrated wetlands. The potential for achieving improved water quality while creating valuable wildlife habitats has led to a growing interest in the use of constructed wetlands for treating and recycling wastewater.

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) The design of the linear boulevard along Jalan Bandar, Pasir Gudang, is to transform the centre medium boulevard into a park-like feel. Preserving the identity of Pasir Gudang, while at the same time functioning as green spaces for all ages and activities, completes the pedestrian and vehicular connections throughout the design.

This study is to investigate the potential for incorporating outdoor design in energy efficient, medium density, residential developments in Malaysia. This design study will focus on: â&#x20AC;˘ Promoting green technology and integrated design for sustainable residential development that lead to high energy efficiency and maximising the use of natural elements. â&#x20AC;˘ Minimising temperatures in residential areas to achieve thermal comfort leading to minimal energy consumption. â&#x20AC;˘ Inject green technology design improvements to find ways to reduce residential energy usage, thereby achieving thermal comfort.

Tumpat Heritage Trails

Mohamad Muizzuddin Mohd Razani Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM)

The design strategy focuses on aspects of concern to establish heritage trails in Tumpat town centre. There are two types of heritage trails in the design; Informative Trails and Discovery Trails. â&#x20AC;˘ Informative trails tend to be passive, requiring the user to walk, or travel by other means, whilst gathering media information, or simply enjoy the experience around the Tumpat town centre. â&#x20AC;˘ Discovery trails are more active. They are particularly appropriate for younger people and family groups. Discovery trails rely on some sort of test in finding or using the information provided. For example, a discovery trail might provide the answers to a quiz where it is unlikely people could guess the answers without completing the observations on the trail.

By creating outdoor conducive spaces with an open atrium and rooftop space, the building will be transformed to be more environmentally friendly, and green, both horizontally and vertically.

Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) The study focuses on the distinctiveness of the longhouse and its significant surrounding elements. The data collected is synthesised to identify the potential area to be enhanced and the value of the cultural heritage of the Melanau people. This study hopes to provide a guide for landscape architecture cultural studies to create a sense of place and living cultural spaces to enhance and promote the cultural tradition of the Melanau tribe in Sarawak.
