WORLD WETLANDS DAY HIBERNATION HUNT

WINTER WILDFLOWER WALK

When you think about January in Indiana, you probably think of cold, ice, wind, and snow. It’s hard to think about anything growing in nature and certainly not beautiful, showy wildflowers. Believe it or not, winter has its own wildflowers! Just not the ones we are thinking of. These wildflowers are often green in color and cling to tree bark, rocks, and other woody debris-they are lichens. There are over 3,600 lichen species in North America, but lichens are spread throughout the world in habitats ranging from arid deserts to Antarctica. Winter is a great time to look for these often-hidden life forms. Join us for an evening of exploration and learning about winter’s wildflowers. Celebrate World Wetlands Day (and Groundhog Day!) in the parks by going on a hibernation hunt with us! We will explore the wetland habitats in Central Park. Starting in Central Park’s East Woods, we will explore the Carmel Creek watershed as we walk along the trails and note habitat structures through the woods and along the creek banks. We will then explore the western side of Central Park to walk around the lagoons to look for areas where hibernation may be taking place. You’ll learn what animals do during the winter, test your winter wildlife tracking skills, and make your own prediction on whether spring is on its way or winter is here to stay. nature WORLD WILDLIFE DAY

On December 20, 2013, The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) proclaimed March 3 as a UN World Wildlife Day to celebrate and raise awareness of the world’s wild animals and plants. We invite you to help us celebrate this day by getting out into our parks and observing wildlife. It doesn’t matter which park you visit, take a photo of the wildlife you see and share your photos with us! Tag Carmel Clay Parks (@CarmelClayParks) in your social media posts with #WorldWildlifeDay. We’ll see how many kinds of critters are using our parks! Are you looking for a more creative way to celebrate? Consider putting together a nature journal and documenting the different wildlife you find on March 3. Whether jotting down the species you see, or hand drawing them in your journal, let this be a fun day to celebrate our wildlife! All Ages • Instructor: CCPR Parks & Natural Resources Staff ACTIVITY#

WILDFLOWER WALKS

When spring arrives, native wildflower communities are the crowning jewel of forest habitats. These plants, called spring ephemerals, pop out of the ground early to take advantage of the sunlight as they emerge from winter. This spring, enjoy wildflower walks at your leisure. These will not be guided walks, but walks on your own time, at your own pace. Use iNaturalist to keep track of wildflower findings. iNaturalist is an online social network to help you identify the plants and animals around you and share biodiversity information. Please download iNaturalist on your smartphone and join the project: Spring Wildflower Walks 2022 to keep the project updated with your spring wildflower findings in Carmel Clay Parks! Looking for some popular places to go within our parks to spot spring ephemerals? We recommend Central Park East Woods, Flowing Well Park, and River Heritage Park. From its beginnings in 1872 to present day, Arbor Day is a celebration of what is to come. While most holidays celebrate something that already happened and is worth remembering, Arbor Day represents hope for the future. This year, join us for Arbor Day to plant and care for trees at Founders Park. This simple act of planting trees represents a belief that the tree will grow to provide us with clean air and water, cooling shade, habitat for wildlife, healthier communities, and endless natural beauty — all for a better tomorrow.

STATEMENT OF ACCESSIBILITY Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation (CCPR) makes a good-faith effort to ensure all patrons, and the community at-large, are knowledgeable of the resources and opportunities available to them, which support full and active participation within CCPR’s parks, facilities, and programs. CCPR believes every individual has the right to participate in activities and programs that support their physical, mental, social and emotional wellness, and therefore contribute to enhancing their overall quality of life. Based on this belief, and CCPR’s vision and mission, we are committed to the provision of services for individuals of all ages, skills, and ability levels. This is achieved by identifying and removing barriers in order to serve individual and community needs, as well as to provide quality programs and services accessible to all; such as our many recreational, leisure, and education-based programs, volunteer opportunities, and interactive public events. CCPR is committed to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act through making reasonable modifications as required by the ADA. Requests for modifications must be made through one of CCPR’s Inclusion Supervisors within 30 days of the start of the program of interest. CCPR will provide reasonable modifications as soon as possible after the commencement of the modification process. Specific criteria will be found on registration documentation. In addition, CCPR is dedicated to nondiscrimination in the provision of programs, services, and activities to the public. CCPR will continue to incorporate all consumer feedback, current research, and practice knowledge in order to continue meeting and exceeding customer/community satisfaction and to protect and promote access for all for generations to come.
