“We met through another gallery, developed a friendship and a couple margaritas later, we decided to open a gallery of our own.” So sayeth Patricia Terwilliger, half of the dynamic duo behind Jones & Terwilliger Galleries, celebrating its 20th year. Jones & Terwilliger has two exquisite galleries on 6th

Avenue, boasting 6700 square feet of what could only be described as an art lover’s paradise. It is an outstanding collection, with a wide variety of styles and subject matter, including several highly acclaimed local artists known for capturing the beauty of the Monterey Peninsula. “We have helped clients find that one perfect painting,” says Patricia. “And we have furnished entire houses.” Barbara nods. “We can do this because first, we have an exceptional and extensive collection. Also, our artists are all very different from one another, but at the same time, they complement each 34

other in a very dynamic yet seamless way.” If they had an actual superpower, Barbara and Patricia agree that it might very well be their staff, all of whom are passionate about pairing people with art they will love. Another secret to the Jones & Terwilliger success story is the long-term relationships they have developed with the noted artists they showcase. “We have some 60 artists with whom we’ve cultivated business partnerships and personal relationships over the years. Our artists are as much a part of our family as our employees,” says Barbara. Whether an art student, a first-time art buyer, or a savvy collector, Barbara and Patricia want anyone who steps inside their galleries to feel welcome, to feel the space to browse, admire, and become immersed. “Our world is so fast-paced,” says Patricia. “We want the gallery to be a place where people slow down and become really present. I love that moment when a client really gets in touch with the extraordinary beauty they are seeing and feeling in a painting.” Adds Barbara, “It’s such a privilege to help someone get back in touch with his or her emotional life through art.” Jones & Terwilliger – step through the doors and breathe in the beauty. Jones & Terwilliger Galleries are located on Sixth Avenue between San Carlos and Dolores. You will be greeted by either Patricia or Barbara. Jones & Terwilliger Galleries is open Sunday through Thursday 9:30 am - 6 pm and Friday and Saturday 9:30 am - 8 pm 35

New Masters Gallery Rises from the Ashes, Returns Home. Community spirit has always been strong in Carmel. Case in point, the night the storied New Masters Gallery on Dolores caught fire. “Friends, business acquaintances, neighbors, and people I didn’t even know just showed up and began carrying paintings to safety,” says Bill Hill, who founded the gallery in 1974 with his late wife, Jennifer. “I don’t think firemen’s job descriptions include saving fine art, but even the firemen were carrying paintings out the door. I was, and remain, so grateful.” Since that June night in 2015, Hill and Gallery Director Janet Sprenger persevered despite the devastating loss. Remaining dedicated to keeping New Masters Gallery open, they moved all the intact paintings and sculptures to a temporary location, continuing to make their 60 artists accessible to clients. During the past year, Hill remained laser-focused on refurbishing the gallery itself and returning home as soon as possible. At the same time, the 1900 paintings that survived the fire got their own makeover by a firm known for museum quality restoration. Each painting has been meticulously restored to its original condition. On July 9th, 13 months after the fire, New Masters celebrated their return and, once again, re-opened its doors, showcasing the finest in representational art. The Carmel Gallery Guide salutes the Carmel community spirit…and Bill and Janet for their resiliency. The New Masters Gallery has been an anchor on Dolores for the past 15 years and a loyal client of the Carmel Gallery Guide for 38 years. Welcome back home, Bill! Carmel Since 1974

CARMEL ART WALK Saturday Night Gallery Walk Highlights Carmel’s Bohemian Art Colony Past Back at the turn of the last century, Carmel’s small population was dominated by artists. In fact, one report in 1910 stated that 60% of homes in Carmel were owned by individuals pursuing a life in the arts. These men and women were inspired by the pristine beauty, the rather free thinking of the community of fellow artists, and the solitude of Carmel. It was an exciting place in which to explore and develop an artistic voice. Thus was born Carmel’s Bohemian art community. It included such luminaries as writer Jack London, poet George Sterling, photographer Edward Weston, and early 20th Century painters Armin Hansen, Percy Gray, William Ritschel, and Mary De Neal Morgan.

M N

These local artists regularly opened their doors, allowing fellow painters and sculptors, as well as collectors, to see the artist at work.

N

M

A century later, the tradition continues. Welcome to Carmel Art Walk, held from 5-8 PM on the second Saturday of each month. Here’s your chance to tour ARTIST OWNED GALLERIES, and to meet the artists who today carry on the Carmel art colony legacy.

TAMARA G FINE ART

34 Ocean Ave. btwn. Dolores & Lincoln, Carmel

585-1543 or 277-7175 Hours: Daily 10-6

It starts with a dedicated Founder, Tamara Gear. Possessing the gift of eye and instinct for the great, voila, Andrea Stella and Bruno Paoli. A truly remarkable relationship over 17 years has been forged between Tamara and Andrea Stella, the most exciting abstract expressionist in Europe. The relationship is so deep that a US exclusive of his finest works was entrusted to Tamara. Bruno Paoli was inspired to paint his impression of this vibrant, bluegrass founder. He, the last of the great post-era impressionists, seven years passed, is the find of our time. His work deepens, ferments, matures, in the cellars of consciousness waiting to be visually and emotionally tasted and celebrated by the many in the grand way of Modigliani and Van Gogh. Tamara provides the opportunity; the invitation is extended, providing the finest collections—only the best of their works—here waiting. Do not be one that says, “I wish I had of, I was there, why didn’t I?” Passion Matters! MAP #
