always feel blessed that one of the true loves of my life has been a forty-year affair.
In 1978, I came to Carmel with the idea of finding a second site for our Tiburon, CA gallery. We found the perfect location between Dolores and San Carlos on Sixth. While negotiating the lease, we explored marketing options and found that what we were looking for did not exist. So, we thought, why not create it? In June of that year, when “You’re the One That I Want” by John Travolta and Olivia Newton John was atop the music charts, we published the first monthly issue of the Carmel Gallery Guide, a 24-page black-and-white guide that showcased the 45 galleries that then existed in Carmel. Still with us today after 40 years: New Masters Gallery, Weston Gallery, Zantman Galleries, as well as the Carmel Art Association.
In 40 years, galleries have come and gone. There were years of tremendous prosperity and three very difficult recessions. Local town politics created restrictions and even put a moratorium on new galleries. Through it all, the Carmel art community has grown stronger, now recognized the world over as one of the most praised locations for finding a wide range of art as well as an enormous diversity in artistic style. Today, the Carmel Gallery Guide is proud to showcase nearly 60 galleries, representing the best of fine art from California, America, Europe, Asia, and everywhere in between. It has been a wonderful journey these past 40 years and I am proud to have been part of the growth and development of this unique and special art community. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for all the love, friendship and patronage all these years.

resenting the extraordinary needlework of Suzhou silk embroidery art, the traditions of which date back to 800 B.C. Once available only to the Chinese Imperial Family, the beautiful tradition of silk art now comes to Carmel. Working on silk fabric and often splitting one silk thread into between 16 and 64 individual threads, a silk artist takes several months to years to create one piece. SIMON BULL–Color and Invisible Energy The work of Simon Bull doesn’t just stand out—it stands up. It demands, dances, invites, and cajoles. It reaches out and touches you playfully on the shoulder. You can almost hear it: “Hey. You. This planet is a stunning place to spend a life. Seriously. Just look at this canvas.” Even when Bull swerves from bold abstracts to the most delicate of cherry blossoms, his work draws you in. It’s hard to turn away. Even “The Greatest” found the British native’s work so compelling that Bull became Muhammad Ali’s official portrait painter for years.
“During my first visit to Ali and Lonnie’s house,” Bull recalled during a recent interview, “I walked past the life-sized painting of Elvis, done by Andy Warhol. It was a rather heady—and humbling—moment, to think my work could be featured with such company.” A fast friendship formed that would last until Ali’s death in 2016 at the age of 74. At the request of Ali and his wife, Bull created detailed paintings that captured every nuance of the famed pugilist’s character, both in and out of the boxing ring. What is amazing and refreshing about Simon Bull is that he can brilliantly evoke the punishing glory of a world heavyweight boxing 76
champ—and follow it up with a series of trees. These images— painted with the most delicate of strokes and subtleness of color —beg the viewer to stop, draw in a quieting breath and simply be in the presence of the painting. Not all that different, in fact, than how most of us react to seeing the Giant Redwoods. Like those magnificent natural specimens, Simon Bull’s work takes your breath away. Even better, his work invites us to breathe a little deeper, a little slower, a little more contemplatively. Color is Simon Bull’s language. Although the subject matter of each painting is important to him, the color and how he pours and transfers it from one surface to another is what his art is all about. And, Bull believes, he puts invisible energy into each of his works— energy that would allow a person glancing at his painting in the morning to feel as though an invisible hand had come out, slapped him or her on the back and said, “Have a great day.” He often thinks about where his paintings will eventually reside and hopes those who possess or own them experience that positive energy. The tone and texture of each Simon Bull painting is also reflected in his new gallery in Carmel, MEUSE. Yes, after many years in The Barnyard and his outdoor studio, Simon Bull is back in Carmel proper—located just down Ocean on the southeast corner of Ocean and Monte Verde. The gallery space offers the perfect venue for creating and promoting art. It also has a bit of history. “This was once the studio of Salvador Dali. He did okay in the art world,” Bull observes with a wink. “The place has good karma.” It’s all in a day’s work for Simon Bull.
Simon Bull’s interactive art gallery Meuse is located on the southeast corner of Ocean & Monte Verde 77

585-1543 or 277-7175 Hours: Daily 10-6
It starts with a dedicated Founder, Tamara Gear. Possessing the gift of eye and instinct for the great, voila, Andrea Stella and Bruno Paoli. A truly remarkable relationship over 17 years has been forged between Tamara and Andrea Stella, the most exciting abstract expressionist in Europe. The relationship is so deep that a US exclusive of his finest works was entrusted to Tamara. Bruno Paoli was inspired to paint his impression of this vibrant, bluegrass founder. He, the last of the great post-era impressionists, seven years passed, is the find of our time. His work deepens, ferments, matures, in the cellars of consciousness waiting to be visually and emotionally tasted and celebrated by the many in the grand way of Modigliani and Van Gogh. Tamara provides the opportunity; the invitation is extended, providing the finest collections—only the best of their works—here waiting. Do not be one that says, “I wish I had of, I was Giampaolo Talani there, why didn’t I?” Passion Matters!

painting. She is widely-recognized as a pioneering artist whose work goes beyond the traditional boundaries of glass and into the contemporary realm. As Cassandria remarks about her work, she says “Imagine a sheet of glass in between you and me. The first stroke of paint that I put down is the first stroke that you as the viewer see. It is almost as if the viewer is on the inside of the painting. Whereas if I were painting on a canvas my very last stroke would be the first stroke the viewer would see.” Her work is collected internationally and exhibited in galleries and museums across the country.

Hours: Wed. - Sun.
Loran Speck’s work mirrors the masterful Dutch and Italian painters of the Renaissance in his exquisite still lives, executed in the manner of trompe l’oeil. Classical elegance and serenity pervade his work, finding expression in richness of color, harmony of form and attention to detail. The Old World quality and charm extend to the frames as well, which were gilt by hand in the rich luster of 22kt gold. Also represented is nationally known artist and brother, Gene Speck. Gene’s paintings are nostalgic in that he paints scenes from the Great Plains that he saw all around him as a child. His depictions of ranch scenes and Indian encampments evoke peaceful and tranquil impressions. The combination of Loran’s and Gene’s work make this gallery a must see.
