ON THE COVER Joseph Nordmann Readying the Boat Oil

Joseph Nordmann (1922-2015) renowned Monterey Peninsula artist and long time member of the Carmel Art Association began his painting career with Paul Connor and was the last student of Nicolai Fechin. Plein air painting offered him an opportunity to really look at nature instead of mindlessly rushing by it. He is known for his spontaneous renderings of buildings, neighborhoods, and the California landscape. Nordmann believed “Art is different. Everyone has a viewpoint and everyone is right. There are no rules. It’s all emotion.”

resenting the extraordinary needlework of Suzhou silk embroidery art, the traditions of which date back to 800 B.C. Once available only to the Chinese Imperial Family, the beautiful tradition of silk art now comes to Carmel. Working on silk fabric and often splitting one silk thread into between 16 and 64 individual threads, a silk artist takes several months to years to create one piece. Experience the exceptional detail and beauty of this dying art.

Just spend a few minutes talking to artist and gallery owner Chris Winfield and you’ll quickly grasp that The Winfield Gallery isn’t just a business–art is the lyrical lifeblood that feeds Winfield’s soul. It started at a very young age. “My father, Rodney Winfield, is perhaps best known for his stained glass planetary window featured at the National Cathedral in Washington DC,” explains Chris, who adds that not only does he come from art, but he also married into it. “My wife, Andrea Johnson, is the daughter of Barbara Johnson, whose work is in the Monterey Museum of Art collection. Andrea is in her own right an extremely respected, well-known painter of great vision, sensitivity, and talent, whose work has appeared in shows and museums across the country.” Relaxed, rather unassuming, Winfield isn’t necessarily one to brag on his own creative endeavors. But they include a thriving reputation, inclusion in numerous museum collections, art books, catalogues, and decades-long relationships with curators and collectors. Winfield opened his first gallery in1989 at The Crossroads. During the first 3 years, his gallery was named Viewpoint, but at some point, it became clear to Winfield that his gallery was really all about his own viewpoint so he, appropriately, rebranded it to Winfield Gallery.

Chris says the term he hears most when people walk through his doors is eclectic. “Many galleries are dedicated to one thing, such as plein aire, modern, or early California. I represent artists from all those walks of life, and more. I’m less interested in labels than I am in finding artists who are invested in the long run, and in finding their unique voice, instead of just creating another version of the voice of the moment.” Listening to Winfield talk about art is a little like attending a wine tasting Photo by Michelle Magdalena Photography with a vintner. He passionately, quietly draws you into the lyrical nature of art, what he sees there, and what he hopes you’ll see too. Art becomes a sort of poetry as he talks of his search for “a quality work surface, a certain patina, the skill and heart that comes through the hands of a truly good artist.” Winfield also emphasizes “the soft sell.” He loves to give visitors a chance to experience the gallery on their own terms, without pressure. When they are ready to ask questions, he is there to give a deeper understanding of what the artist has created. Winfield says, “I see my job as taking what the artist has done on canvas or in sculpture, and articulating that wordless thing into the spoken word.” He gives a slight laugh of self-deprecation. “And I can do that a lot. I love to talk about good art and dedicated artists.”

Winfield Gallery is located on Dolores between 7th and Ocean. You will be greeted by either Chris or Molly Cybuck, the gallery director. Winfield Gallery is open 7 days a week and incorporates a wine tasting area at the entrance to the gallery, operated by Figge Cellars. The partnership with Figge Cellars is yet another example of Chris Winfield’s entrepreneurial spirit and foresight. The Figge Cellars tasting room was one of the very first wine tasting rooms in Carmel.

TAMARA G FINE ART

34 Ocean Ave. btwn. Dolores & Lincoln, Carmel

585-1543 or 277-7175 Hours: Daily 10-6

It starts with a dedicated Founder,Tamara Gear. Possessing the gift of eye and instinct for the great, voila, Andrea Stella and Bruno Paoli. A truly remarkable relationship over 17 years has been forged between Tamara and Andrea Stella, the most exciting abstract expressionist in Europe. The relationship is so deep that a US exclusive of his finest works was entrusted to Tamara. Bruno Paoli was inspired to paint his impression of this vibrant, bluegrass founder. He, the last of the great post-era impressionists, seven years passed, is the find of our time. His work deepens, ferments, matures, in the cellars of consciousness waiting to be visually and emotionally tasted and celebrated by the many in the grand way of Modigliani and Van Gogh. Tamara provides the opportunity; the invitation is extended, providing the finest collections—only the best of their works—here waiting. Do not be one that says, “I wish I had of, I was there, why didn’t I?” Passion Matters!
