ON THE COVER Winston Swift Boyer Ocean 1.2.13 II Photograph Printed with archival pigment ink on canvas Each of the 20 photographs in the Ocean Series alters our perception of the horizon where ocean and sky meet. These soft, ambiguous images beckon us into a realm of timeless eternity where colors float and reverberate beyond our usual perception of nature. Gallery Sur is honored to represent the fine art photography of Winston Swift Boyer, who offers a new perspective on a familiar scene.

This Year’s Festival Artist: David Ligare The Carmel International Film Festival is thrilled to honor David Ligare as its featured artist for 2015. Ligare is a California treasure – one of the state’s most prolific and successful artists with more than 40 solo exhibits worldwide to his credit. Ligare will bring his talent and passion, creating a poster and print especially for this year’s festival. Ligare is particularly interested in making what he calls “the literate picture” but it might also be called the cinematic picture because of his frequent use of historical narrative and dramatic compositions. One of his large “Thrown Drapery” paintings was featured “Untitled (Thrown Drapery)” Oil on Canvas, 48” x 40”, 2015 prominently in the 1985 film “Compromising Positions” which might have, in turn, influenced the later iconic image of the white plastic bag floating in a blue sky in the film “American Beauty.” David Ligare has had over forty solo exhibitions in New York, London, Rome, Los Angeles, San Francisco and elsewhere. The Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento is currently showing a retrospective of Ligare’s work that will travel to three other museums.
David Ligare’s work is exclusively exhibited at Winfield Gallery in Carmel Dolores between Ocean & 7th PO Box 7393 Carmel, CA 93921 800.289.1950 || 831.624.3369 www.winfieldgallery.com 11

resenting the extraordinary needlework of Suzhou silk embroidery art, the traditions of which date back to 800 B.C. Once available only to the Chinese Imperial Family, the beautiful tradition of silk art now comes to Carmel. Working on silk fabric and often splitting one silk thread into between 16 and 64 individual threads, a silk artist takes several months to years to create one piece. Experience the exceptional detail and beauty of this dying art.

On the
Scene! It has been said that the art market always follows the money. These days that means courting new collectors from new emerging sectors in our changing economy. It’s no longer about Auction houses wooing collectors with a new Warhol or Thiebaud. The status quo will no longer work. It now requires seeking new creative approaches for increased sales at the local gallery level. In Carmel, that change seems to be working. It is clear that the Carmel galleries are mirroring the country’s recent economic growth. As they continue to struggle back to pre-recession art sales activity, there is noticeable optimism among the gallery owners and that attitude is yielding some recent and real movement and progress around town. Some of that change includes gallery owners, Barbara Jones and Patricia Terwilliger. JONES AND TERWILLIGER GALLERIES just recently opened up another gallery location adjacent to their existing gallery on Sixth Avenue. With this expansion, Jones and Terwilliger now occupy over half the block on Sixth which enhances their already strong reputation of being a “powerhouse” gallery in our community. On July 18, Jessica Nault celebrated the grand opening of her gallery, DEL MONTE FINE ART. Jessica not only moved the gallery to its new location at the corner of Sixth Avenue and San Carlos Street, but she also fulfilled a long time dream and purchased Del Monte Fine Art from former owner Brent Gross. Congratulations, Jessica! Also on the move are Bill and Kim Yant. Bill and Kim moved ZANTMAN ART GALLERIES from the location in which Zantman Art Galleries resided for over 50 years. This is definitely a testimony for changing the status quo. The new location on San Carlos Street just off Ocean will allow the Yants to enjoy an abundance of natural light that the new location affords them. The increased visibility and large front windows will add significantly to displaying and exposing the Yant’s enormous selection of over 1000 paintings.
Jovan and Sanya Micovich recently moved their long time Sixth Avenue location of CLASSIC ART GALLERIES around the corner to San Carlos Street. This move was envisioned by Jovan and Sanya for a very long time and they seized the opportunity when the space became available. Along with this move, they have retained their Ocean Avenue location, and, by doing so, Classic Art Galleries now occupies the most gallery space in Carmel. Jacob Brest also just recently moved his studio gallery, BREST STUDIOS, to a new location on Dolores near Fifth Avenue. Jacob’s gallery exclusively features his own work. New to Carmel is the JOAQUIN TURNER GALLERY. Local artists Joaquin Turner and David Seibert decided it was time to move their studios into an actual gallery setting where their clients can have greater access to their work. The new Joaquin Turner Gallery is located in the historic Pantiles Court on Dolores between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, directly across from the Carmel Art Association. Also opening a new gallery in town is artist Stephen Sanfilippo. His new CYPRESS COAST GALLERY is located between Mission and San Carlos Streets - and between 5th and 6th Avenues - down near The Mall off San Carlos just past Club Jalapeno. The gallery features Stephen’s own work which includes local seascape views and vistas from Carmel, Big Sur, and Point Lobos. In July, Joe Adams took over the Melissa Warren Gallery. He recently hung his new sign reflecting the new gallery name JOE ADAMS ART. This is a working studio gallery so you can see Joe working on several of his pieces in progress at one time. Joe can be found in his gallery all hours of the day and well into the evening hours. Bill Hill has owned NEW MASTERS GALLERY for over 41 years and claims the distinction of having the oldest gallery in Carmel with continuous single ownership. Unfortunately, on June 6th, a devastating fire broke out at the back of New Masters Gallery. The fire and smoke damage was severe and forced Bill to close his gallery while the lengthy and necessary repairs get underway. Due to his resilient character and determined attitude, Bill decided not to just give up, but instead, to temporarily relocate New Masters Gallery during the period of reconstruction and repair. The temporary location for New Masters Gallery is up the street on Dolores just a few steps from the Village Corner Restaurant at Dolores Street and Sixth Avenue. Thank you for supporting the Arts and visiting our truly unique Carmel art galleries.

TAMARA G FINE ART
34 Ocean Ave. btwn. Dolores & Lincoln, Carmel
585-1543 or 277-7175 Hours: Daily 10-6
It starts with a dedicated Founder, Tamara Gear. Possessing the gift of eye and instinct for the great, voila, Andrea Stella and Bruno Paoli. A truly remarkable relationship over 17 years has been forged between Tamara and Andrea Stella, the most exciting abstract expressionist in Europe. The relationship is so deep that a US exclusive of his finest works was entrusted to Tamara. Bruno Paoli was inspired to paint his impression of this vibrant, bluegrass founder. He, the last of the great post-era impressionists, seven years passed, is the find of our time. His work deepens, ferments, matures, in the cellars of consciousness waiting to be visually and emotionally tasted and celebrated by the many in the grand way of Modigliani and Van Gogh. Tamara provides the opportunity; the invitation is extended, providing the finest collections—only the best of their works—here waiting. Do not be one that says, “I wish I had of, I was there, why didn’t I?” Passion Matters!

Cassandria Blackmore is acclaimed for her unconventional approach to reverse painting. She is widely-recognized as a pioneering artist whose work goes beyond the traditional boundaries of glass and into the contemporary realm. As Cassandria remarks about her work, she says “Imagine a sheet of glass in between you and me. The first stroke of paint that I put down is the first stroke that you as the viewer see. It is almost as if the viewer is on the inside of the painting. Whereas if I were painting on a canvas my very last stroke would be the first stroke the viewer would see.” Her work is collected internationally and exhibited in galleries and museums across the country. 91

NICHOLAS BOGHOSIAN FINE ARTS & ATELIER
41 Dolores at Fifth Avenue, Carmel
626-9800 Hours: Daily
After many years working in the corporate environment and traveling the world, Nicholas decided to retire and follow his passion and talent for art. He now devotes himself full time to painting. During his travels, he spent every free moment exploring the outlying areas of his destinations, literally consuming the culture, studying the people, and absorbing everything unique about the place he was in. Today, his works grace the walls of many corporate and private collectors around the world. All works have a special meaning to Nicholas. They are not created on merely a whim, but with emotion and purpose. “Once the subject matter has been chosen, I have no conscious control over the outcome of the painting. It evolves from within. I pick up a brush, begin painting, and the work flows.”

Jacob Brest’s creative process is not something easily explained. It is not a job, nor means of gaining monetary security—but simply a demonstration of who he is—an impulsive creative, often overflowing with a symphony of complex compositions, bold contrasting lines and fervent use of color. In this chaotic nature, his style of work perfects his way of existence and is a testament of his universe, as if he is holding an ongoing conversation with the world through lines and color. Brest completely eliminates the step in art of planning one’s work, removing all elements of premeditation, and in doing so produces an act truthfully raw with intense honesty.
