African Violet

Bromeliad

Dracaena

Choose plants for variations in size, color and texture. You'll want to group plants that have similar requirements, such as lighting, watering and general care. African Violets boast gorgeous color in violet, purple, pale blue, and white flowers, require low-light, and are reasonably priced. Group these beauties with other vivid blooming plants, such as bromeliads, which also require low-lighting. Choose leafy Dracaenas which require medium to low-lighting to add some hearty green. Purchase basic potting soil that is high in organic matter, clean and well-drained. Types of containers to consider are: clay, terracotta, ceramic or plastic, based on your budget.

New Neighborhood: Larkin Woods

Families love Lexington South Carolina. From its awardwinning schools (Lexington County School District One) to its close proximity to Lake Murray and downtown Columbia to its small-town-close-community-feel, kids and parents have found the Lexington area to be perfect for every quality-of-life reason. Many new neighborhoods are going up all over the Lexington area, and our dilemma was choosing just one to highlight here. Then we heard about Larkin Woods… located near the crossroads of Mineral Springs & Cromer Road. Larkin Woods’ children attend Meadow Glen Elementary, Middle and brand new River Bluff High School. A

smaller neighborhood with just 65 homesites, Essex Homes is building all-brick beautiful house plans in the 2500 - 4300 square feet range, incorporating family-friendly features like media rooms, studies, over-sized owner’s suites, extended garages and 3car garages. We loved playing around with Essex Homes’ Interactive Home Designer on their website: EssexHomes.net. Another plus: every Essex Homes home is e-built, resulting in 25-30% less energy usage than a typical new home. Prices start in the mid $200s. Directions I-20 to exit 61. Turn left onto US Hwy 378. Turn right at light at the BP (Cromer Road). Continue down Cromer Road. Turn left into Larkin Woods (Just before the intersection of Cromer Road and Mineral Springs Road) Model home is under construction and should open in October 2014. New Neighborhood: Summer Pointe

We looked at several new lakeside communities when searching for just the right one to showcase in our New Neighborhoods’ feature. Summer Pointe in Chapin won our hearts. Summer Pointe offers an affordable opportunity to live within the highest-ranking school district in the Midlands (Lexington Richland School District Five) and convenient access to Columbia’s biggest recreational asset - 50,000 acre Lake Murray. Boat and jet-ski owners will appreciate Summer Pointe’s community boat storage and access to the lake via the boat ramp at Eptings Camp, located next door. We love Great Southern Homes' Garden Series - an all-brick lineup where each home comes standard with Great Southern’s Green Smart Home energy efficient features, including Honeywell’s

Tuxedo Touch, a high-tech home automation system that allows homeowners to control and automate their security systems, heating and cooling systems, door locks - even the ceiling fans and lighting! Use the wall-mounted touch screen or use your smartphone as a remote from almost anywhere. Great Southern’s homes at Summer Pointe feature granite countertops, hardwood floors, elegant molding and downstairs owner's retreats with garden tubs. And did we mention “affordable”? Summer Pointe home sizes start at 1866 square feet in size and prices begin in the high 100’s. Directions: Take I-26 to exit 91. Turn left on to Columbia Avenue. Turn left onto Old Lexington. Turn right onto Eptings Camp Road. Turn right into Summer Pointe Model Open: Open 11AM-5PM; Call first Community Representative: Liz Reid: 803-606-9596

“Paths of Destruction: Sherman’s Final Campaign”

A parade will feature bands, floats, antique cars, Lower Richland JROTC Cadets, elected officials and other military guests. The procession will end at Hopkins Park, where the public is invited to a special program honoring members of the Lower Richland Veterans Formation, SC Combat Veterans Group and all veterans and families. Lower Richland Blvd. & Old Hopkins Rd. www.sercosc.org

Details Sherman’s last effort to quell the Confederacy in his army’s march through South Carolina, the state that fired the first shots of the Civil War. Following the March to the Sea, Sherman gained permission from Grant to lead his troops through South Carolina beginning in early 1865, with the goal of decimating any and all military related buildings, organizations and personnel in an attempt to break the morale of the Confederates and bring the war to an end as soon as possible. This example of total war, with little differentiation between military and private entities, left a lasting impact on the Carolinas and, officially ending April 26, 1865, was one of the final campaigns of the war.

“Paths of Destruction” focuses on the march’s impact on the people of South Carolina and its significance in the development of the concept of total war and the ethics involved by examining multiple aspects of the campaign. Artifacts include Union and Confederate weapons and accoutrements, ammunition, POW pieces, uniforms, excavated relics from locations along Sherman’s path, and flags. Highlights of the exhibit are a life-size diorama depicting Columbia after the burning, audio segments of first-person accounts during the campaign, and a pre-and-post burned Columbia interactive map. Founded in 1896, the SC Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum is the oldest museum in the Columbia area. The museum focuses on South Carolina’s military history from the Revolutionary War to the present. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00-5:00, and the first Sunday of the month 1:00-5:00, and located at 301 Gervais Street (in the same building as the State Museum).
