The South Carolina State Museum recently (August 2014) opened the only observatory of its kind in the nation, one of the largest planetariums in the Southeast, and the only permanent 4-D movie theater in the state. This is the first time any museum in the United States has combined these three new facilities with a multidisciplinary museum focusing on art, history, natural history and science/technology. Fall in Shape at Saluda Shoals Park! Even though the weather is changing, it doesn’t mean that your activity level has to decrease. Saluda Shoals, a 400 acre regional park offers more than 9 miles of paved/unpaved trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding. Bicycle rentals are available for men, women and youth for full day, half day and 1 hour rates. A boat ramp is available for canoe and kayak launch for 1 hour (weekends only), 3 hour and full day access. Horse Trail Passes are available for guests to bring their own horse to ride trails throughout the park. Saluda Shoals offers Challenge Course Adventures for the ultimate physical fitness! Endure a series of low ropes activities led by trained, professional staff: walk tight-ropes, negotiate obstacles, balance elements as a team, pass teammates through a giant web and climb walls! The Barking Lot Pass at Saluda Shoals allows visitors access to a fenced, off-leash area for dogs where you can run and play with your four-legged friend. New Neighborhood: Larkin Woods

Families love Lexington South Carolina. From its awardwinning schools (Lexington County School District One) to its close proximity to Lake Murray and downtown Columbia to its small-town-close-community-feel, kids and parents have found the Lexington area to be perfect for every quality-of-life reason. The procession will end at Hopkins Park, where the public is invited to a special program honoring members of the Lower Richland Veterans Formation, SC Combat Veterans Group and all veterans and families. Details Sherman’s last effort to quell the Confederacy in his army’s march through South Carolina, the state that fired the first shots of the Civil War. Following the March to the Sea, Sherman gained permission from Grant to lead his troops through South Carolina beginning in early 1865, with the goal of decimating any and all military related buildings, organizations and personnel in an attempt to break the morale of the Confederates and bring the war to an end as soon as possible. This example of total war, with little differentiation between military and private entities, left a lasting impact on the Carolinas and, officially ending April 26, 1865, was one of the final campaigns of the war.

“Paths of Destruction” focuses on the march’s impact on the people of South Carolina and its significance in the development of the concept of total war and the ethics involved by examining multiple aspects of the campaign. Artifacts include Union and Confederate weapons and accoutrements, ammunition, POW pieces, uniforms, excavated relics from locations along Sherman’s path, and flags. Highlights of the exhibit are a life-size diorama depicting Columbia after the burning, audio segments of first-person accounts during the campaign, and a pre-and-post burned Columbia interactive map. Founded in 1896, the SC Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum is the oldest museum in the Columbia area. The museum focuses on South Carolina’s military history from the Revolutionary War to the present. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00-5:00, and the first Sunday of the month 1:00-5:00, and located at 301 Gervais Street (in the same building as the State Museum). Learn about the culture of the early Cherokee Indians in Lexington, SC! This two-part program is for groups of youngsters that get to explore what early Cherokee children saw and experienced every day. They will touch various animal hides like teeth and claws from black bears, foxes, deer, raccoons and rabbits. Baskets, food, hunting, fishing, clothing, and pottery are also shown and discussed. Games, a ceremonial dance, and storytelling in which there is group participation by wearing masks, dancing and playing musical instruments such as the drums, hawk bells and turtle rattles is included.
