you don’t want to wait for trees to grow and shade your patio, there are some creative and clever ways to create shade, including building wooden pergolas and covering with stretched fabric or light weight fiberglass panels. Hanging baskets of draping flowering plants and ferns from the pergola will create lightly dappled shade, and planting climbing vines like rubens or glasnevin to grow up the pergola posts will augment shade and provide an impressive floral display. Or installing a retractable awning allows stargazing at night from your patio, and ample shade during the day. You want your space open and easy to move through. I always help my clients select furniture that is durable, and

outdoor furniture gets more abuse than most. You should choose furniture that’s built to last outdoors. You want to look for fiber fillers in outdoor furniture cushions as that will repel moisture and resist mildew. I also look for fabrics that are UV-protected.”

Ideas for screened porch decor: We asked Gigi for ideas to create a knock-out screened porch. “Many of my clients want me to create a screened porch that is a comfy living room set in a screened porch - giving them the feeling of being outside with the comfort of being indoors. We usually begin with weatherresistant window shades. We use weather-resistant outdoor furniture, dressing it up with fabric cushions covered in eyecatching prints. There are tons of great-looking outdoor rugs that are functional and stylish. You can be playful when decorating an outdoor room with items that you wouldn’t typically see inside the home - whimsical art for the walls, more color than is used in the rest of the house, or a theme that reflects one of your hobbies or passions. I love decorating spaces where people plan to have fun.”
