Happy Autumn & Happy Holidays, Everyone! We have a great time putting each issue of Discover Columbia together here at Gardener Guides, but the Fall/Holiday is always the most fun. In the middle of summer while the cicadas are buzzing and the sun is blazing, we’re busy focused on Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas, the cooler weather and the coming of a new year. We love the holidays and it’s fun to get started thinking about them. In this issue, you’ll find a holiday party planner, a 4 month events calendar, lots of ideas for things to do at this time of year and a holiday gift guide. Also, we’d like to introduce you to our new little belle, Coco! The creation of graphic designer Katie, Coco will lend her personality to our pages. She’s like most of us Columbia girls... has seersucker and camo in her closet, cries when the Gamecocks lose a game, loves fishing at the lake and baits her own hooks, adores shrimp & grits and can’t imagine a day without sweet tea. And she has to comment on EVERYTHING!

Coco says:

From the bottom of our hearts, best wishes for a wonderful holiday season!

Kathy, Carmen, Tina, Katie and Leighanne

There is sooo much to do around here... y’all are gonna to love it!

THREE SUITS ONLY $1,200 The Original Suit Starter Package is back for a limited time! With same day purchase and pick-up. And affordable financing.

Christopher Columbus Was

A BEARDED REDHEAD! Columbus Day | October 14, 2013

Although there are countless paintings and sculptures of our city’s namesake, including a statue of Columbus located in Riverfront Park, all paintings and sculptures were made posthumously. So do we know anything about how our guy actually looked? I went on a quest for this information, and what I turned up were quotes by two of his contemporaries describing Columbus’ physical features: Oviedo, the official chronicler of “the Indies,” who witnessed the Admiral’s triumphant entry into Barcelona after his first voyage to America, described him as “taller than the average and strongly limbed: the eyes lively and other parts of the face of good proportion, the hair very red, and the face somewhat ruddy and freckled”. And Bartolome de las Casas, a chronicler of the colonization of the West Indies, is quoted as saying, “He was more than middling tall; face long and giving an air of authority; aquiline nose {i.e.hooknose}, blue eyes, complexion light and tending to bright red; beard and hair red when young but very soon turned gray from his labors”. So let’s put this together, Chris was tall, red haired, red bearded and with blue eyes. He had a freckled complexion and a Romanesque nose. Wow! Sounds like Robert Redford! And, like so many other aspects of his life, even the story behind Columbus’ name carries a certain amount of mystique. His name in Italian was Cristoforo Columbo, by which he was known until he was an adult. After he moved to Spain, however, his name became the Spanish Cristobal Colon, by which he is known throughout the Spanish speaking world. English speakers, of course, refer to him as Christopher Columbus, thereby Anglicizing his first name and using the Latin version of his surname. And our city’s adoption of the name “Columbia” came from the popular use of that word in the late 18th century to describe our newly founded country. Happy Columbus Day!

BUY LOCAL The Greater Columbia metropolitan area is home to 750,000 charming people and is made up of many small cities, towns and rural communities. Most of us consider ourselves pretty darn neighborly - happy to share a cup of sugar, happy to give to our churches, temples and charities, happy to be courteous and kind. One neighborly kindness we may overlook is helping our neighbors by supporting the small businesses where many of them work. It’s up to us to help each other keep our livelihoods alive and well... and we should shop locally for products and

SOUTHERN BEDDING Harry Wills, FOUNDER and daughter Karen Wills Lanier

In 1945, Harry Wills came back home to Columbia after his service as a Naval Flight Instructor during World War II. He started working in furniture sales and, in 1951, he and his friend Bill West decided to strike out on their own and form a wholesale furniture business here. Their dream was to establish a manufacturing shop and build quality dining room tables, chairs, end tables, coffee tables and dinettes themselves as well as distribute quality lines for other manufacturers. The baby boom was just beginning and young families needed affordable well-constructed furniture. Columbia furniture retailers lined Main St. downtown, and Harry spent his days calling on them and eventually expanding Southern Table by selling to stores as far away as northeast Florida and southern Tennessee. As the years rolled by, Harry and Bill began to see a market for high quality mattresses. By the 42

1980’s they were solely manufacturing the quality bedding they are still building today. They renamed their business Southern Bedding. Today, Bill is gone, but Harry and his daughter, Karen Wills Lanier carry on, along with a loyal staff including a gentleman who has worked there since 1972, beginning the day he graduated from high school! They still build their mattresses with the same high quality components - built to last a long time - with pillow-tops upholstered on both sides so they flip - giving customers twice the life of a typical one-sided mattress. And they buy their components locally too - mostly from manufacturers in SC, NC and GA. Southern Bedding’s showroom and manufacturing facility are tucked away behind the Staybridge Suites off Huger Street in downtown Columbia near I-126. Shoppers are personally greeted by Southern Bedding’s founder Harry Wills and his daughter, Karen Wills Lanier. Harry is 94 years young and loves waiting on customers! ©

This magazine would certainly be cheaper to have printed in China or India, but we as a company feel we should support the families who live around us and so we give the work to a printer here in West Columbia. Not to be preachy, but it’s just the right thing to do. Beginning with this issue, we will introduce you to some of our friends who own businesses in the Greater Columbia area. And we ask that you consider giving them your business the next time you’re out to buy a product or service! I’m sure you will... y’all are great!

Equipped with a card table, folding metal chair and a telephone, Kathy Gardener worked from a spot in her living room in Northeast Columbia, approaching businesses about advertising in a new relocation magazine for the Midlands. That was almost a quarter of a century ago. Today, Gardener Guides (tradename) is a successful media company with offices on Sunset Blvd. in West Columbia, where they publish six print and digital communication products. One thing that Kathy has come to understand about publishing, you must be willing to change... a lot. The company at one time had 4 printed magazine titles in circulation. Today only one of their products is printed (Discover Columbia), while the other five are digital.

Interest rates are still low (and most experts tell us that they are going to head up sometime soon). And there are plenty of other good financial reasons to purchase a new home now. Building codes have mandated higher energy efficiency standards. Home builders have taken to heart this mandate, and have incorporated many features to make their new homes comfortable and “green”. Essex Homes SE rolled out their “e-built” program last year. Karl Haslinger, CEO, explains, “e-built homes use 25%-35% less energy than a typical new home, and even more than a typical resale home. Every home we build is e-built. We use a number of techniques to produce an energy-efficient home such as air barriers and tight seals,

Think you can’t afford a brand new home? Great Southern Homes helps people enter the world of homeownership with well-built, affordably priced entry-market homes. The company is currently offering 3 bedroom 2 bath homes with 2 car garages for under $120,000. They also offer 100% financing to qualified buyers, and can help you get moved into your very own home for a monthly mortgage payment that is significantly lower than a rent payment. Their Redbud model features a spacious living room with a cathedral ceiling that opens to a formal dining area... picture Thanksgiving dinner in your new home! Richland One’s International Welcome Center, which opened in August 2004, is located at 2612 Covenant Road, Columbia. The center serves as a “one-stop shop” for new international families. Getting Enough Sleep? Disorder of sleep (like Sleep Apnea) and Wakefulness (like Narcolepsy) are more common and serious than people realize. Many patients assume that problems like bad snoring, insomnia and daytime drowsiness are “just the way I am”, and therefore not real diseases that require evaluation. In fact, these sleep conditions are not only annoying to patients (and others nearby), but also impair mental and physical function, impact job performance, and pose major health risks. For example, people with Sleep Apnea are 6 times more likely to die prematurely. So if you or someone you love has trouble sleeping, breathing issues at night, restless in bed, twitching of the limbs, sleep talking, drowsiness upon waking, bothersome daytime sleepiness, or morning aches and pains, call us at 788.7884 to schedule a “Sleep Medicine Consultation”. Cooter Soup

Traditional South Carolina Cuisine Made Healthy

On special occasions my mama made us cooter soup. I think when Mama was young, her mama made this with real cooter (turtle) meat, but my mama always used ground beef. I’ve developed a “healthy” cooter soup recipe and I hope y’all enjoy it! It’s great on a fall/winter day and there’s just something special about cooter soup - I think of it as Southern chili.

Make a low-fat roux by browning your flour in either a cast iron skillet for 20 minutes (until the flour starts to brown - keep it stirred) or in the oven on a baking sheet at 400 degrees for 1 hour (until flour is brown). No oil or butter needed!

Soup ingredients: 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 cups yellow and or red bell pepper, diced 1/2 cup celery, diced 1 tablespoon minced garlic 3 cups chicken broth 3 cups canned crushed tomatoes 1 pound of extra lean ground beef 3 hard-boiled eggs, diced 2 tablespoons lemon juice 2 teaspoons cayenne pepper 2 bay leaves 3 tablespoons chopped parsley 2 tablespoons vinegar (to taste) salt

In a soup pot, cook the onions, peppers and celery with the olive oil until tender. Add the garlic, crushed tomatoes, chicken broth and ground beef. Boil, reduce heat and let simmer for 15 minutes. Add eggs, lemon juice, pepper, bay leaves, parsley and vinegar. Cook for another 30 minutes. While soup simmers, add roux in small amounts, and keep stirring until desired thickness is reached. Remove bay leaves. As with her she-crab soup, Mama always kept a little creamer filled with dry sherry which she’d stir in before serving. That makes it really special!

Another Reason Not to Smoke Cigarettes!

COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, is a common, preventable and progressive disease that makes it very difficult for a person to breathe. The symptoms usually appear in people who smoke or have smoked in their lifetime. People with COPD have trouble pushing air out of their lungs, which makes it hard to breathe in new, fresh air. It lacks a cure and doctors have yet to discover how to reverse the damage done to the lungs, but treatment and lifestyle changes can help you feel better, keep you more active, and slow the progress of the disease. FIVE QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF • During the past 4 weeks, did you experience shortness of breath? • Do you ever cough up mucus or phlegm? • Do you do less than you used to because of breathing problems? • Have you smoked at least 100 cigarettes in your ENTIRE LIFE? • Are you over the age of 35? Contact Family Medicine Centers of South Carolina for help if you answer yes to the questions above. 803-931-0100. 62
