Outdoor Sculpture

Some of our most creative and accomplished art pieces are not in a gallery or museum, but in a courtyard or in a garden or behind an office building. Outdoor sculpture allows the viewer to take in a piece of art without it competing with other pieces and in the setting for which it was created. These pieces of visual art are made whole by their natural setting. This summer, make it your business to go see some of these marvelous works! WHY CHOOSE GREATER COLUMBIA?

Finlay Park Photo: Kathy Gardener

It’s Warm! It’s Sunny! It’s famously hot! It certainly isn’t cold. The average high in July is 92 degrees (our hottest month!), and our coldest month (January) only dips down to 55 degrees! We bask in the sunshine more than 200 days each year and get very little, if any, snow!

It’s Fun! Boating and fishing are fine on Lake Murray and Lake Wateree. Hiking is great at Congaree National Park, Harbison State Forest, or on the statewide Palmetto Trail. Throw a stone and you’ll hit one of our great city and county parks. We love our USC Gamecock baseball (the #1 National Champions in 2010 and 2011!), football, and basketball games. And, Greater Columbia is at the center of the recreation capital of the universe: South Carolina! Hop in your car and, a mere 2 hours later, turn up on a seaside beach or a mountain hiking trail!

home to the University of South Carolina, Columbia College, Benedict College, and Allen University! USC’s Darla Moore School of Business was ranked #1 in the undergraduate international business specialty by the US News & World Report! USC’s South Carolina Honors College was ranked No. 1 in “A Review of Fifty Public University Honors Programs” (As of Spring 2013).

It’s Good For Business! We are home to the beautiful, state-of-the-art Columbia Metropolitan Airport; a UPS hub; Interstates 26, 20, and 77; are near the port of Charleston; and the Midlands Workforce Development Board helps train and staff companies here. We are a “right-to-work” state.

It’s Good For You!

We’re known statewide and regionally for our outstanding healthcare facilities. Nine hospitals and the USC School of Medicine are here.

It’s Sophisticated! As the cultural hub of our state, Greater Columbia is home to a world-class art museum; 3 ballet Email me if you need any info. I’m always glad to be of help companies; the South Carolina Philharmonic; the Lake Murray and direct you to the right place! Fit Kids! With rising obesity and debates about everything from sugary drinks to skim versus whole milk, it can be hard for parents to know whose hype to believe. It’s common sense to feed your body good food and to move more. But, for kids, how much is more? KidsHealth.org reminds parents that: (1) Exercise for kids doesn’t have to be structured, like dad’s circuit training or mom’s run. Make it fun! Activities like tag, crossing the monkey bars, or swinging encourage endurance, strength, and flexibility. (2) One of the best way to encourage activity in kids is to limit TV-time: Ages under 2, no TV. Ages 2+, only 1-2 hours/day. (3) Kids shouldn’t be inactive for very long unless they’re sleeping— keeping kids moving encourages healthier bodies and more active minds! Infant daily activity should focus on motor development; toddlers, at least 1.5 hours of daily activity; preschoolers, at least 2 hours of daily activity; school-aged kids: 1 hour or more is recommended. Don’t panic—this doesn’t mean you need gym membership for your kid. Take a walk at Crooked Creek Park (1098 Old Lexington Highway, Chapin), play tennis at Seven Oaks Park (200 Leisure Lane, Columbia), bike or hike the trails at Saluda Shoals Park (5605 Bush River Road, Columbia). Remember to keep it simple, keep it fun, and keep it up!

Richland One’s Challenger Learning Center is offering summer camps! Parents, would your children enjoy an out-of-this-world summer adventure building robots, launching model rockets or flying a jet in a flight simulator? Sign them up now for the Richland One Challenger Learning Center’s summer camps for elementary, middle, and high school students. The camps are designed to be fun and educational. “As campers build and launch rockets, they will see Newton’s Laws of Motion in action,” said Lead Flight Director Dr. Carolyn Donelan. “To build robots they must learn about circuits and programming. Flying flight simulators involves practical applications of physics, and our Astronaut Academy camps give campers a taste of everything. Our camps are real science for real kids, and it’s real fun.” For a list of camps offered this summer, go to www.thechallengercenter.net. The camps are open to Richland One students and non-district students. All camp participants should bring a bag lunch and drink each day of the camp. Parents who want to register their children for the camps should contact the Challenger Learning Center at (803) 929-3951 or at Challenger@richlandone.org. Please note that the registration deadlines are two weeks prior to the start date of each camp, but early registration is encouraged. The Challenger Learning Center, the only facility of its kind in South Carolina, is located at 2600-A Barhamville Road, next to W.A. Perry Middle School. ©

Cook Out? In the Kitchen: Eat Safe! On the gril :

There’s nothing quite like the sizzle of the grill or the sear on your steak in summertime, is there? Well, there’s also nothing quite like food poisoning—or anything nearly so miserable! So, consider these food safety tips while sliding on that “King (or Queen!) of the Grill” apron and before you dig in at the local block party: If you marinate your meat, keep it in the fridge, not on the counter. If any of the marinade will be used as a sauce with the meat, reserve that portion—don’t reuse it! If you freeze your meat when you get it home, be sure it’s completely thawed before grilling to ensure even cooking and prevent the spread of bacteria. Everywhere: Make sure you don’t use the same containers or utensils for raw and cooked meat—this defeats the purpose of cooking out any bacteria. Keep hot food hot and cold food cold! At both these temperatures, bacteria and germs are unlikely to spread. But, bacteria and germs thrive in those in-between temperatures! Don’t eat food that’s been left uncovered outside, and make sure you provide coverings for any food you serve! No one wants lettuce on their burger if the fly got there first!

Frankie’s FunPark

One of the best things about summer is the ability to play like a kid again, and Frankie’s Fun Park in Columbia offers this chance all year long! Eighteen holes of Mini Golf will inspire fierce competition, some good-hearted ribbing, and a whole lot of fun for the young and the young at heart! Whether you’re the next Tiger Woods or you just think you are, you’ll definitely enjoy an afternoon at Frankie’s! Open Monday-Saturday from 10am-Midnight and Sunday from Noon-Midnight. Frankie’s is open yearround, but call for specific hours of operation as attractions and times vary. 140 Parkridge Drive (Turn left onto Harbison Boulevard off of Exit #103 on I-26, then left onto Parkridge.). 803-781-2342. http://bit.ly/W6FhuC

Getting enough sleep?

Disorders of sleep (like Sleep Apnea) and wakefulness (like Narcolepsy) are more common and serious than people realize. Many patients assume that problems like bad snoring, insomnia, and daytime drowsiness are “just the way I am,” and therefore not real diseases that require evaluation. In fact, these sleep conditions are not only annoying to patients (and others nearby), but also impair mental and physical function, impact job performance, and pose major health risks. For example, people with Sleep Apnea are 6 times more likely to die prematurely. So, if you or someone you love has trouble sleeping, breathing issues at night, restless in bed, twitching of the limbs, sleep talking, drowsiness upon waking, bothersome daytime sleepiness, or morning aches and pains, call us at 803.788.7884 to schedule a “Sleep Medicine Consultation.” All are welcome, even if not currently registered with our practice.
