The museum is a captivating architectural conversion, transformed from an urban department store into a sleek and airy, light-filled space with 25 galleries. The permanent collection includes world-class examples of the Italian Renaissance, Baroque Art, Impressionism, and Modern Art. This May, the Museum will open Found in Translation: The Art of Steven Naifeh, the first retrospective of Naifeh’s paintings and sculpture.
From May 18-September 1, 2013, you can view 26 large-scale works covering 40 years of Naifeh’s works and showcasing the role concepts of harmony, unity, and geometric abstraction played in his art. Raised in the Middle East, Neifeh was heavily influenced by (and later studied) Arab and Islamic art.That experience combines with Western influences to form a complex, stunning visual experience that provokes both contemplation and pleasure. The South Carolina State Museum features four large floors filled with fascinating exhibits, many of them hands-on, telling the story of South Carolina through the disciplines of art, history, natural history, and science/technology. Naval Warfare on the Coast and Failed Attempts to Take Charleston is part of an ongoing series marking the sesquicentennial of the Civil War. Charleston architects Edward C. Jones and Francis D. Lee designed Kensington Mansion, located in Eastover, SC. With 29 rooms and 12,000 square feet of floor space, the raised basement contains a massive cistern that held 10,000 gallons of water for household use. The house stands on Headquarters Plantation on the Wateree River in Richland County, directly across the river from the Singleton family seat in Sumter County. Admission charged. Columbia’s oldest museum presents the state’s martial tradition from the Revolutionary War to today’s War on Terror. Shepherd’s Center of St. Andrews
The Shepherd’s Center of St. Andrews is the place to plug in for Greater Columbia folks fifty and wiser. Three 9-week sessions during the “academic” year and one 6-week session during the summer will “Enlighten, Entertain, Engage, and Energize” you! Sessions include two (three during the fall and spring) 50-minute classes taught by volunteers including professors, members with knowledge or skills of particular interest to members, and community experts. Continuing classes include art, bridge, creative writing, classic movies, linedancing, tai chi, beginning and intermediate Spanish, and quilting! Fit Kids! With rising obesity and debates about everything from sugary drinks to skim versus whole milk, it can be hard for parents to know whose hype to believe. It’s common sense to feed your body good food and to move more. But, for kids, how much is more? KidsHealth.org reminds parents that: (1) Exercise for kids doesn’t have to be structured, like dad’s circuit training or mom’s run. Make it fun! Activities like tag, crossing the monkey bars, or swinging encourage endurance, strength, and flexibility. (2) One of the best way to encourage activity in kids is to limit TV-time: Ages under 2, no TV. Ages 2+, only 1-2 hours/day. (3) Kids shouldn’t be inactive for very long unless they’re sleeping— keeping kids moving encourages healthier bodies and more active minds! Infant daily activity should focus on motor development; toddlers, at least 1.5 hours of daily activity; preschoolers, at least 2 hours of daily activity; school-aged kids: 1 hour or more is recommended. Don’t panic—this doesn’t mean you need gym membership for your kid. Flying flight simulators involves practical applications of physics, and our Astronaut Academy camps give campers a taste of everything. The beach/recreation side of the SCE&G public parks (on the Lexington side of the dam at Lake Murray) will be open through early September and is the perfect place to enjoy the summer sun. Recline in your beach chair at the edge of the water or take a nap in the sand and really enjoy the summer experience! When you just can’t relax anymore, get up and enjoy the view on a walk across the Lake Murray Dam. The park is open weekdays until 8pm. Finlay Park is a spectacular way to spend a summer day—lay out a blanket, bring a picnic basket and a good book, and enjoy a beautiful break from city streets, traffic, and to-do lists. Boasting a dramatic waterfall plunging down landscaped terraces to a gorgeous man-made lake, a fountain, and a covered arbor with swings, Finlay Park manages to be both a quiet place to relax and one of the favorite spots for Columbia events, including summer festivals, events, and concerts all summer long. This is one of the largest handicapped-accessible parks in the country, and the paved paths are perfect for strollers as well. There’s nothing quite like the sizzle of the grill or the sear on your steak in summertime, is there? Well, there’s also nothing quite like food poisoning—or anything nearly so miserable! So, consider these food safety tips while sliding on that “King (or Queen!) of the Grill” apron and before you dig in at the local block party: If you marinate your meat, keep it in the fridge, not on the counter. If any of the marinade will be used as a sauce with the meat, reserve that portion—don’t reuse it! If you freeze your meat when you get it home, be sure it’s completely thawed before grilling to ensure even cooking and prevent the spread of bacteria. Everywhere: Make sure you don’t use the same containers or utensils for raw and cooked meat—this defeats the purpose of cooking out any bacteria. Keep hot food hot and cold food cold! At both these temperatures, bacteria and germs are unlikely to spread. But, bacteria and germs thrive in those in-between temperatures! Don’t eat food that’s been left uncovered outside, and make sure you provide coverings for any food you serve! No one wants lettuce on their burger if the fly got there first!

Lake Wateree State Park This park , just a short drive northeast of Columbia off US Hwy. 21, provides access to secluded and refreshing 13,800-acre Lake Wateree. The lake is popular for all water-related activities including a swimming beach (no lifeguards) with a sandy bottom that deepens slowly and gradually. Fish for bream, catfish, crappie and bass from any of the banks of the park. A valid South Carolina fishing license is required. This park participates in the Tackle Loaner Program sponsored by the SC Dept. of Natural Resources. Rods and reels are available for loan at the park store. Walk for the Health of It! Northeast Columbia Jackson Creek Nature Trail | Sesquicentennial State Park | 9564 Two Notch Road | 803-788-2706 This trail is a short loop that will take you through a boomland forest area, upward into an open pine habitat, and end with a scenic view of Centennial Lake. As you walk along the trail, follow the interpretive signs to learn about many of the plants and animals that call Sesqui home.
