For almost 8 years, Columbia’s Woodrow Wilson Family Home has been engaged in a multiphase, comprehensive rehabilitation. Bringing back the home to its original design and look, its rooms now lay out as they did when new in 1872 and reflect paint colors popular at that time. The Woodrow Wilson Family Home has broadened its place in local history as it will now feature exhibit galleries, period vignettes, virtual tours and wayside signage that help the visitor understand the Reconstruction Era following the end of the Civil War. ECONOMIC NEWS: We’re Ahead

Governor Nikki Haley and the SC Department of Commerce team have been deeply involved in recruiting companies to our state over the past few years, with promises and delivery of 1000’s of new jobs. When Boeing came to North Charleston, the projected job creation was 3800. That projection has increased to 6000. Bridgestone Tire recently announced a 1.2 billion dollar investment in Aiken County, creating 1000 jobs. Our state is widely recognized as a Top State to Do Business. The year 2013 saw over $3 billion in capital investment statewide. This bodes well for the state government’s financial health, managed from the capital city, Columbia. University of South Carolina’s Darla Moore School of Economics projects growth in leisure and hospitality, construction, financial services and retail. Unemployment dropped to 7.5% in 2013, and is projected to continue to decline.

Developing

Stories Palmetto Compress Warehouse

In the late 1800’s - early 1900’s, Columbia was home to six

textile mills (the first electric-powered mill in the country now houses the South Carolina State Museum on Gervais St.).

Support businesses to the textile mills thrived, and the Palmetto Compress and Warehouse Company built a large complex to

mechanically compress cotton bales in size for more economic transit and storage. The vast red brick building at 617 Devine St. is on the National Register of Historic Places and was

recently put under contract by Palmetto Compress Preservation Developers LLC, with plans to convert the building into a 100room hotel, rooftop condo’s and a mixture of retail and office space.

Hub at Columbia

What happens when downtown’s largest commercial tenant

(SCANA) moves to the other side of the river? A lot of office

space sits idle, small businesses and downtown, in general,

suffer a major blow... until an enterprising residential

developer sees an opportunity to renovate the high-rise

building into luxury apartments for university students and

young professionals. Scheduled for occupancy in Fall 2014.

The Redevelopment of the Bull Street Mental Hospital Site

The property at Bull Street and Elmwood Avenue, once a state mental hospital, has been looking for a new identity and some TLC for a long time. The site has been considered one of the most valuable properties in the Southeast, 181 acres at the edge of a redeveloping downtown like Columbia’s. Hughes Development Corporation of Greenville, SC is taking on the project with a master plan to develop a world class site that will allow space for living, office, retail and entertainment, while retaining the most historic aspects of the site. Hughes is known for their development work in downtown Greenville, SC. Hub at Columbia

>>Did you know? The “Congarees”, as the area was known, is situated in Lexington County near the place where the Cherokee Path crossed the Congaree Creek (which flows into the Saluda River). Of economic and strategic importance because of its position at the crossroads of South Carolina, the colony. As early as 1691, this area was being considered in legislative actions by the General Assembly. It served as trading area and settlement, frontier outpost, military staging point, early township, crossroads of the great trade paths of the Catawba and Cherokee nations, and a center of back country development.
