The Many Rewards
of the Aviation Industry As the fourth quarter rush engulfs me again this year, I have been thinking how lucky I am to work in such an amazing industry, surrounded by so many professionals who are generous, thoughtful and genuinely enjoy what they are doing. HERE ARE A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS . . . The number of professionals who work in business aviation is small enough that there is a real sense of community. Deal after deal, I am able to work with many of the same people over and over again. Throughout my years in aviation, those individuals on the other side of the negotiations, or on the team I am working with, have become true friends. When my firm is fortunate enough to be selected as the legal advisor on an aircraft transaction, I am always excited to see who I will be working with. After so many years, I don’t often see new faces and names, but when I do, it is always interesting to meet someone new to the industry with new ideas and a fresh viewpoint. I often tell them how fortunate they are to be joining an amazing field. The second thing I love about this industry is that it is complex and ever changing. I often have been asked if I get tired of doing the same thing all of the time. Some may see transactional work as repetitive and boring, but I can honestly say I have never had the same deal twice. As the business aviation industry has evolved into a global market, I regularly encounter new countries and their aviation

regulations, import/export issues and cultural differences in negotiating styles. Further, as new companies enter the industry and other companies falter, there are a whole host of unexplored issues that continually arise which, perhaps, no one has ever considered before. Finally, and truly most importantly, the individuals I work with in all areas of aviation are outstanding. Because the industry is complex and continually evolving, I encounter a question I don’t know the answer to at least once a week. But answers are available among the community of professionals who are so generous and giving with their time and knowledge. I seem to be able to find the answers I need within minutes of formulating the question. Whether the question relates to financing, insurance, risk management, regulatory requirements, fractional ownership, charter, market conditions, registration requirements, import/export requirements or an entirely new topic, experts are available to help and generous to no end. My years in aviation have given me a gratifying career, and I am glad that after fifteen years in the industry I am now a resource for others.
