Southern Aero – Franklin, Stinson & More

Do you own a Franklin engine, a Stinson or other antique airplane? If so, then you need the services of Southern Aero, LLC. Southern Aero is located in Thomasville, NC and was founded in 2010 as a one-stop shop for restoring antique aircraft and their engines.

Southern Aero is the only full-time shop known to specialize in repairing and overhauling the Franklin Engine. Robert Still, a graduate of the A & P program at Guilford Technical Community College in Jamestown, NC, found his love for antique airplanes at an early age with the family’s 1947 Stinson 108-2. Rather than work for one of the large jet facilities in the area such as Honda Jet or Timco, Robert’s vision was to open a shop where he could work with the old planes made of metal tubing, wood and fabric. Southern Aero, LLC came to life after purchasing the assets of C. G. Lucas, a long-time Franklin Engine shop and family friend, in Oklahoma.

In 2011, Southern Aero purchased Deb’s Aircraft from

Jerry DeBattista. Southern Aero’s aircraft restorations to date include several Stinson’s, a J-3 Cub and a 1946 Aeronca L-16 owned by the North Carolina Aviation Museum in Asheboro, NC. In the spring of 2013, Southern Aero teamed up with Kelly Bartlett of Franklin Aerospace and his 600,000+ new, old stock Franklin factory parts to form the largest parts supplier and overhaul facility in the world.

Our customers reside not only in the U.S. and Canada, but England, Germany, Australia, Switzerland and South Africa.

In addition to our usual services, 2014 finds Southern Aero in a newer, larger facility with Franklin Aerospace bringing back the Franklin 4A-235 4-cylinder engine for experimental aircraft use. The new Franklin is currently in the test phase on the run stand.

Erect-A-Tube Increases its Product Portfolio with Custom Buildings Design, performance, and reliability, words not often used to describe aircraft hangars but rather the latest Learjet or Cessna Citation, right? Well Erect-aTube, the Illinois based manufacturer of aircraft hangars and bi-fold doors is known for all of the above and more for their custom buildings located throughout the U.S. Speer Field at Gillespie Field, a San Diego County Airport located in El Cajon, California is one example of Erect-a-Tube’s flexibility to take design ideas and turn them into reality. It was businessman and developer Bill Allen’s dream to replicate the architecture of the 1930’s ‘Golden Age of Aviation’, and Erect-a-Tube was just the manufacturer for the job. Allen, along with his wife Claudia envisioned a cluster of 23 hangars with bowstring, gambrel and gable roof designs.

manufacturer, the Allens knew Erect-a-Tube was the right choice. Roof design flexibility and the ability to fabricate electric bi-fold and bottom rolling hangar doors made the difference. According to Allen, “We felt comfortable knowing both the buildings and doors were made by one manufacturer.”

Claudia added, “Erect-A-Tube understood what we wanted and they made our concept happen. “We wanted buildings to look strong, to have muscle and Erect-A-Tube was able to achieve this for us.” These buildings are made of structural steel. They have uncompromised structural integrity. Many inspectors have said, ‘These buildings are here to stay’.”
