Sport Pylon Air Races:
On the Ai
Sport Pylon Air Races (SPAR) was formed to quench the thirst for more air racing in the United States. Like other races, the SPAR Circuit will be a single aircraft timed through a closed course. That’s where the similarity ends.

T
hese Lycoming, fuel-injected, electronic ignition, 600 lb., 125 horsepower sport planes will explode through a series of twists and turns between and around the exciting obstacles we call pylons. These are real LSA sport planes; all the planes are stock and completely equal in every respect. Much like the IROC auto races in the 80’s and 90’s, SPAR is designed so that no pilot has the advantage of a superior aircraft over another pilot. Every possible step has been taken to make it a true pilot vs. pilot race. SPAR is much like other closed course races that have proven popularity, but perhaps the most important differentiating aspect of the SPAR Circuit is that the aircraft are an obtainable goal for the common man. These are not $600,000, only-for-the-rich aircraft, they’re LSA compliant sport planes that range from $80-150 thousand dollars. Air race fans can enjoy both regional and national races. Our Southern Outlaw circuit will start in January and go throughout the winter months. Our fans get a break from the cold and the schedule will not conflict with normal summer airshow events. The course will, of course, be very challenging. The 9G aircraft will have to navigate a course of 15 breakaway pylons, some of which the aircraft will have to knife edge through. The aircraft may even have to make a complete change of direction before heading back through the same obstacle.
6 | May 2014 | www.aviatorshotline.com
Some of the obstacles have earned nicknames, such as The Bermuda Triangle and The Chircane. There’s a 180 degree turn we call The Sleeper and a 270 degree turn we refer to as The Widow Maker. Additionally, there are not one but two Quad Pylon Obstacles included in the course that will both thrill and excite any aviation fan. With Smoke On, Baby, these aircraft and pilots will dazzle thousands of air race fans all across our great country. Each aircraft will race against four of its rival siblings to form a divison of totally equal racers. For the finale, each division winner will race for the Grand Championship. The fans will find out who’s the best pilot across all divisons - at least on that particular race day. Of course, safety is our foremost concern. These are the only racers in the world equipped with the BRS ballistic parachute recovery system. These low altitude races are fast and furious; personal parachutes are simply out of the question. BRS brings a new level of safety to the races. At altitudes as low as 270 feet the entire aircraft becomes a parachute in a matter of seconds. This gives the pilot the security and confidence that on race day, everyone will be thrilled by their performance, they’ll have a great time and everyone will come home safe to compete another day. MAY THE BEST PILOT (THAT DAY) WIN! • Current SPAR aircraft are built and designed by Renegade Light Sport LLC. events and filming the building of the aircraft. Versus Network, Spike TV and others are keeping a close eye on these events as well; the last ESPN Air Race event aired to over 2.5 million spectators. Stay tuned race fans, because we have only just begun. The first races will be announced very shortly. MEET THE PLANES Sleek, stylish, and just Plane Sexy (sorry for the pun), this is the Lycoming-powered Falcon LS. This aircraft was proudly displayed in the Lycoming tent at Oshkosh 2009 – 2012 and will return in 2014. It
• LSA compliant aircraft with Lycoming powered, fuel injected, electronic ignition engines that weigh in at just over 600 lbs. • The events will promote the new planes, the pilots and the light sport category in general. SPAR will give the LSA sport world their own “Brass Ring” to shoot for! • The aircraft will be weighed with their pilots so that they can be equally weighted using fuel quantities and ballast. This ensures that no pilot, plane or team has a weight advantage over another. • The first pilot to fly in the morning will be the last to fly in the afternoon; this will offset density altitude advantages. Making the aircraft and event as evenly matched as possible is our priority. • The aircraft cannot be flown two times in a row by the same pilot as the SPAR circuit continues across the U.S. • Scoring: Two runs per day, shortest combined time wins. It’s that simple! • SPAR will consist of eight to ten races per year plus a Championship Race, all held in the U.S. and/or its territories. Some events may be held in Canadian provinces. Talks are progressing for an upcoming event that may be held in the Bahamas. These will be amazing events at even more amazing places!
will make its full race version debut in the SPAR Circuit in 2015. This aircraft was the first SLSA certified with a Lycoming engine anywhere in the world. This is the bird that started the Lycoming
• Most importantly these will be 100% U.S. manufactured aircraft, made and designed for the U.S. sport plane market and U.S. sport plane pilots. • NO ROTAX ENGINES ALLOWED. LSA craze and many feel this is the future of light sport aviation. A tricyle gear version is also available. Renegade’s 9G 650 lb. Lycoming powered “Lil Rascal” is the world’s first fully aerobatic LSA plane. Patterned after the legendary Pitts S1C aircraft, the Renegade “Lil Rascal” puts its own spin on a fully
aerobatic LSA. Made of carbon fiber, a cecconite fabric fuselage and classic fabric wings, the “Lil Rascal” brings the SPAR Circuit an old-school biplane with new-school state-of-the-art construction, components, materials and manufacturing practices. This aircraft complies with all the ASTM requirements for the LSA category. This is what we call “Putting the SPORT in Light Sport Aviation!” A two-seat version will debut at Oshkosh Air Venture 2014 in the Lycoming tent. Another great aircraft that has just been added to the SPAR lineup and will soon be a huge factor in the SPAR circuit is the Florida Panther from S.P.A. This all metal, single seat tailwheel LSA will dazzle the crowd as it stalks its way through the pylons. It sure looks fast - even when it’s landing! SPAR is the exclusive distributor of the Lycoming version of this aircraft. A high performance LSA that will make its debut in the races sometime in 2015 is the new “Lil Rascal LS2,” a two-seat, fully aerobatic 9G LSA. We hope that this will spur a new era of LSA manufacturers building competitive LSA, creating more categories and divisions in the SPAR Racing Circuit. 8 | May 2014 | www.aviatorshotline.com
We have a SPAR division for all aviation fans, including but not limited to: biplanes, low wing, tail dragger, metal and composite aircraft. Stay tuned for more - we believe many more LSA manufacturers will soon follow suit with this “High Performance LSA” mentality. RACING PILOTS APPLY NOW! An FAA Sport Pilot’s Certificate can be obtained for under $5,000. In most cases, a valid driver’s license is all one needs to replace the FAA Flight Physical. The SPAR Circuit can be an adventure for anyone who has ever thought about holding a Pilot’s Certificate. It also provides a second chance for those who thought they could no longer fly, as in many cases no FAA physical is required for this Sport Pilot category. TIM “BENNY” BENHAM - FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR (CFI / CFI-I / MEI/ MEI-I/ 7,000 HOURS) Representing the U.S. Navy, Tim “Benny” Benham is the Old Gentleman of the group and a retired U.S. Navy F14 carrier pilot with over 800 carrier catches to his credit. Tim was an Instrutor at the famed TOP GUN Navy Fighter School in Mirimar, California for over ten years. He stayed on with the school as an Adversary Pilot and is a graduate of the Navy’s Aviation Safety Officer’s School. In addition to the Tomcat, he has experience flying several different aircraft including the T-34C, T-2C, TA-4J, T-45, Beechcraft King Air (B-200) and A-36 and V/K-35 Bonanzas. He holds CFI Single Engine Land, CFI Instrument, and Multi Engine Instructor Certifications, and is certified as a Commercial Pilot in both Multi Engine
Land and Single Engine Seaplane aircraft. Benny is a member of the National Association of Flight Instructors (NAFI), Airplane Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), and the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA). Tim’s a true soft spoken gentleman, but put one of the Navy’s best fighters in his hands and I sure wouldn’t want to make him mad. Lets just leave it at that! BROKEN WING PROJECT Proceeds from these spectacular races will fund the Broken Wing Project, a 501C3 Non-Profit that has been formed so that we can train our combat wounded veterans, at no cost to them, to fufill one of man’s most precious dreams learning to fly. Many of our veterans joined the military with the express goal of flying for their country. Unfortunately, due to the nature of their duties some get seriously injured before reaching flight school. SPAR believes that through the sport plane category, these able minded veterans can and
State-of-the-Art hand controls make it possible.
should be given the opportunity to fufill their quest for flight. SPAR will fund these quests. We will accomplish this mission without government funding. Injured heroes will get the opportunity to fulfill the dream of flight, even if they thought it was no longer possible. Through your support, both by attending the races and sponsoring the events, we can ensure that our brave young men and women will be able to receive this precious gift. SPAR’s racing headquarters and training facility is located on the eastern seaboard on the Palm Coast of Florida at the Deland Airfield (KDED). Careers with SPAR through the Broken Wing Project include flight training and FAA certification for Light Sport Repairman. I can think of nothing finer than to see these brave young soldiers and sailors flying their loved ones over the beautiful beaches of the Florida Palm Coast on graduation day. “If we change but one life, and keep the depths of depression from overtaking only one of our wounded fallen heroes, then this daunting task of which so many people will participate in will all have been worth it.”

Is This the “New GA?”
... LSA Four Seaters
By Dan Johnson
S
omething of a stealth invasion is beginning. I refer to an emerging flock of four seat Light-Sport Aircraft. Of course, most readers are aware that no such birds exist as LSA (in the FAA’s code, anyway). By U.S. regulation Light-Sport are two seat aircraft. Other nations have some different ideas. For now, suffice it to say the “LSA 4s” — as I choose to call them for this article — are on final. In the past I’ve written about Evektor’s Cobra, one of the first in this group, arriving so early that you probably would not call it a “LSA-like” airplane. The southern Czech company enjoyed success with their SportStar and Harmony, smaller siblings to a four seater they flew several years ago. After Evektor (coincidentally also the very first LSA to be approved), we began to hear about Flight Design’s C4 modeled on their LSA market-leading CT series. Another was the Tecnam P2010 that looks like their gorgeous P2008 LSA grew up a bit. Tecnam is flying their P2010 and
Flight Design will fly its C4 this summer.
12 | May 2014 | www.aviatorshotline.com
Flight Design expects to fly their C4 before AirVenture 2014. Similarly, Pipistrel is flying their Panthera. Those four well known LSA producers are not alone. Another you know is the Sling LSA, a sharp two seater from South African producer The Airplane Factory. However, this fairly new company (whose principals have a long history under other names) has also flown their four seat Sling 4 not just around the test area but around the entire globe. Among American builders, one wonders with the success of the RV-12 (hundreds of kits already underway and a growing number of fully-built SLSA versions following), could Van’s Aircraft consider making the RV-10 four seater under the new industry consensus method? They certainly could; it seems only a question of will and financing.
The emergence of these four seaters may be made enormously more practical by the creation o f industry consensus standards for FAA Type Certified airplanes. The The effort is aimed at Airplane Factory reducing the cost of is flying complying with govthe Sling 4. ernment certification. This topic is pretty dull reading, I realize, but the pocketbook implications are immense. Do you wonder why the onetime $130,000 Cirrus SR20 four seater now can run well over $800,000 (albeit as a sophisticated, turbocharged five-seater in deluxe form)? To understand, you need look no further than the “$8,000 angle of attack indicator.” This poster child instrument was held up by GAMA as the reason Part 23 aircraft development is so ponderous; any change to a Type Certified aircraft means lots of new expense ... so the aircraft improve slower than technology evolves. GAMA’s pushing highlighted the problem to FAA and the agency
responding by adopting a new mantra: “Twice the safety at half the cost.” An AoA cost $8 grand in a GA aircraft while it is only $800 in an Experimental, said GAMA. They may not have known an AoA costs only about $200 in a Light-Sport. New ideas about upgraded instrument panels were part of Flight Design’s C4 announcements: they’ll use a mix of TSO-approved instruments and non-TSO. This and more is possible under the new ASTM F44 industry consensus standards being prepared. This work is well underway; aircraft could be flying under these new rules in a few years. Behind the regulatory or consensus standards curtain more important things are happening. Some of these four seaters will be built in the USA. It’s true. The light aviation industry may be “importing” (more accurately, preserving U.S.) jobs in contrast to what the media yelps about all the time ... “We’re exporting jobs overseas!” is a common lament of journalists and politicians. So, Tecnam made a splash at Sun ‘n Fun 2014 with their announcement of a large new facility at
Tecnam is progressing fast with the P2010; it has been flying for months.
