Dreams Come True Aviation: “Danger Will Robinson” The Robot’s warning from Lost in Space is equally applicable to owners and people maintaining S-LSA Danger - do not put your aircraft’s airworthiness at risk. §91.327 outlines the responsibilities and the limitations on maintenance. At the risk of oversimplifying FAA language, maintenance must be done by an authorized person in accordance with maintenance and inspection procedures developed by the manufacturer. Standard maintenance procedures are documented in the maintenance manual. Changes to equipment, or major repairs not specified in the maintenance manual must be accomplished via a method approved by the manufacturer which is generally documented in a Letter of Authorization (LOA) which must be kept with the maintenance log. Per ASTM F 2295 LSA manufacturers shall develop and implement a system of receiving, evaluating, and correcting safety of ﬂight and service difficulty issues. Each owner/operator of a LSA shall read and comply with the maintenance and continued airworthiness information and instructions provided by the manufacturer. It is the responsibility of the owner and maintainer to assure that all mandatory safety bulletins are reviewed and compliance is documented.

We are often consulted on the pre-purchase review of aircraft and find that documentation of compliance with mandatory safety bulletins is not accomplished.

UPDATE ON THE 2013 LSA MARKETPLACE by Dan Johnson

t least aviation is not bowling! Recent articles say the number of American bowlers has plummeted from nine million to two million, a drop of 78%. Compared to that the aviation industry looks far more durable (line chart). Indeed, aviation in all sectors is facing challenges but we are buoyed by reports in the same newspapers that say Americans are feeling more financially secure since stock markets are up substantially and houses are selling faster and at better prices. However, as we’ll show below, 2013 is one of those transition years. That means that sales have been occurring at an increased pace, but due to companies assuming a defensive posture in the 20072011 downturn, production is now lagging behind sales just as it was in 2005-2006 when LSA burst on the scene. I’m optimistic that 2014 is going to be a much stronger year. I am not the only one. “I feel we will be experiencing two significant growth years in 2014 and 2015 based on the continued aging of the pilot population and the pent-up demand in the marketplace,” said Tim Casey, Garmin’s sales manager for portables, LSA, and experimental aircraft markets.

One company said they’d made more than 30 sales yet registered only a quarter of them, all in 2013. As the engines of production accelerate around the USA and world, we can see rising currents of air in the industry. Unlike in years past, the U.S.-based manufacturers in particular seem ready to lift more pilots aloft. Hoping for a much improved 2014 and 2015 and focusing on the companies that did enjoy a good first nine months of 2013, we tick off the top performers. Once again, the LSA pack is lead — very convincingly — by CubCrafters with a solid 40 new registrations in nine months. Sport Aircraft has maintained admirable sales consistency even through the down years and Legend bounced back from some soft years of late. Another top brand that is reviving nicely is Tecnam with 10 registrations in the first nine months of 2013. Please remember, all numbers are derived from the FAA registration database and are rarely in perfect sync with a company’s sales activity; over time, these differences find equilibrium. A notch back but still finding good performance in a sluggish economy is Pipistrel, which logged eight registrations and finally arrived in the Top 20 List. Flight Design added seven registrations but is one of those companies reporting much better sales albeit with delivery lags slowing their entry to the FAA database. Tied with Flight Design is Aerotrek. For this company, the figures represent another good performance; they ranked third in 2012 registrations, now move into the Top 10, and have generally been a model of consistent sales. Producer Aeropro takes a conservative approach and can only allocate a limited number of their production to the USA (England is presently hot for them). Phoenix Air USA, importer of the gorgeous motorglider of the same name registered three and has also had to learn patience with the manufacturer’s cautious delivery pace. In 2013, the refrain has been that sales are up from 2011 and 2012 but deliveries are not keeping up, a situation that should improve as builders sense better economic conditions. Quicksilver/Adventure Aircraft EMG-6 Electric Motor Glider Achieves First Flight

dventure Aviation, a subsidiary of Rainbow Aviation, is proud to announce the successful first flights of the new Electric Motor Glider aircraft. This aircraft is a joint collaboration between Adventure Aircraft and Quicksilver Aeronautics. The EMG-6 achieved its first flight on December 20, 2013 at Corning Municipal Airport in Corning, CA. Piloted by aircraft designer Brian Carpenter, the initial series of flight tests have proceeded spectacularly as a glider being towed aloft utilizing a Honda 400CC quad runner. Although the aircraft is equipped with a small electric motor to make it fit into the part 103 category, (allowing for flight without an FAA pilotâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s certificate)

all of the initial flight test were conducted as a pure glider without any of the drag reduction enhancements and without the use of power. Flight testing continues into the spring with a multitude of different configurations. Pure glider, glider with a single engine electric sustainer motor, single engine 40 hp configuration, twin engine, and tri-motor configurations. Additionally, the testing will continue by evaluating several combinations of speed fairings, gap seals, and cockpit enclosures most of which will be manufactured from lightweight carbon fiber materials. This aircraft sports many high-tech and innovative new design concepts along with many of the tried-and-true concepts currently demanded by the aviation enthusiast. The EMG-6 aircraft can be built as a single place part 103 legal ultralight and then legally converted at a later date into a two place experimental aircraft. The folding wing and folding tail design makes it not only possible to reduce the storage footprint at the airport, but makes it possible to fold the aircraft and store it in your garage at home. And speaking of storing the aircraft at home, the quiet electric power and the ability to take off and land within 50 feet make the options for flying from sites, other than the airport, nearly endless. With a gross weight design limit of 750 pounds theoretical flights lasting as long as three hours are possible utilizing current technology. The prototype aircraft will be flown initially utilizing (2) 20hp brushless Predator 37 motors manufactured by Plettenberg of Germany. The motors, controllers, batteries, and propellers are all off-the-shelf components currently used in the giant scale radio control aircraft industry. We have set our sights on several other power plant configurations that are currently available as well. Since the power plant mounting drawings are open source, it makes it possible for many other enthusiasts of the electric aircraft to develop even more electric power plant combinations.

Initial flight tests have been extremely promising with great stability and control through all of the tested flight regimes to date. The aircraft has a manual elevator trim system, full span ailerons that also serve as flaps capable of 30째 deflection as well as 8째 of reflex, a large shock absorbing centerline wheel capable of landing in nearly any off field situation. It is also is equipped with removable training wheels which can be utilized by the pilot for stability assistance during the early phases of flight and then removed at a later date. Removing the training wheels just requires removal of three quick release pins and can be accomplished in about 30 seconds. Training wheels fold up and can be stored in the second seat/ baggage area. The training wheels also serve the more important function of holding the aircraft upright and making it easy to maneuver when the wings are folded for storage. With this new aircraft, we envision providing a new safe, fun, economical, environmentally friendly, quiet, reliable ultralight aircraft that will change the face of sport aviation in the future. To really open up the possibilities of this aircraft it can be built as an experimental amateur built aircraft. And it can be flown with a fixed wing pilot certificate in the experimental category without a medical and without a glider rating as long as the aircraft is flown as a single place aircraft. Additionally, a glider pilot

can fly it as an electric powered glider with multiple engines without a multiengine rating. No medical certificate required. All of these options significantly reduce the cost of operation of a small aircraft. Our vision is to offer an affordable aviation option for the average person. This will require that the cost of operation, maintenance, storage, fuel, insurance, and of course, the cost of the aircraft be affordable. We are working diligently on developing an entry-level kit that falls near a $10,000 price range. To offer a flyable aircraft with the ability to be towed aloft with nearly any vehicle and a $200 tow system at this price range, it is truly an option for flight that is within the reach of much larger population. In addition to an entry-level kit, we are diligently working on a fast-build kit requiring less than 80 hours to assemble. While we are currently using a four wheeler to tow our proto-type, there are many thousands of aircraft that will be capable of towing the EMG-6 (with a tow speed range from 30-60 mph) since the operating limitations on most experimental light sport aircraft allows these aircraft to be utilized for towing. Although there is still much testing ahead, both in the air and on the ground, everything to date is looking exceptionally good.
