FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR In planning this season for Maine State Music Theatre, we knew it would include The Color Purple. This stage adaptation of Alice Walker’s unbelievable novel takes the story from its pages and into our hearts and minds. The film adaptation made Whoopie Goldberg a star (and was Oprah Winfrey’s acting debut), and has cemented itself in history as one of the finest films ever. The two subsequent stage versions have done the same for the Musical Theatre genre. The narrative deals with difficult themes, including the evils of racism, sexism, domestic violence, and trauma. But it is also a compelling portrayal of love, compassion, and liberation. The story of Celie and her journey toward wholeness is as relevant as it was when it won Walker a Pulitzer Prize and the American Book Award in 1983. We are proud to bring this story to life under the direction of E. Faye Butler with support from Felicia P. Fields (Tony-nominated for her portrayal of Sofia in the original Broadway show). With E. Faye and Felicia driving the narrative, there is no doubt in my mind that the heart of this piece will shine. This story is an American story, a story of our collective history, a story of brutality and loss, but also a story of hope, resilience, and the power of love. It is the job of theatre to illuminate the human condition, to inspire change, and to spark conversations that can, we hope, bring us closer together. Deeply compassionate and beautifully imagined, this epic musical will carry you on a spirit-affirming journey towards redemption and love. Curt Dale Clark Artistic Director

MSMT ANGELS The MSMT Angels, a volunteer organization, carries out a wide variety of activities in support of Maine State Music Theatre. We are ecstatic to be back to do what we love. The MSMT annual staff has been hard at work to keep our wonderful theatre alive during the pandemic, and we are very grateful. Throughout the trials of not having a 2020 season and the uncertainty of a 2021 season, they kept our hopes alive and did everything possible to create innovative and exciting shows this year. And now we are all excited for a full 2022 season. MSMT Angels are an integral part of the ushering staff and have an active program to support the theatre’s cast and crew. Many of our members transport cast members and production staff to and from the airport, bus terminal, and train station. Others distribute posters and brochures for display in stores and restaurants throughout Brunswick and beyond. We organize welcome bags for the arriving cast and crew members. We also provide breakfast food for crews during changeover between shows. Additionally, being an Angel has very special rewards: ushering on opening nights with a guaranteed seat, attending cast parties and, best of all, having a chance to get to know the cast and crew who enrich our lives and our community. To learn more about the Angels and see a list of current Angels members, visit www.msmtangels.org or contact Edie Kilgour at 751-5217 or at msmtangels@gmail.com. You can also ask any usher who is wearing an Angels name tag. I look forward to welcoming new Angels! Edie Kilgour, Angels President

FROM THE DIRECTOR/CHOREOGRAPHER It’s amazing to return to Maine State Music Theatre wearing a different, yet very important, hat. Thank you Curt Dale Clark and Stephanie Dupal for your faith in this story. Thank you to my partners Flo Harris and Jarred Lee and the entire team of artisans here at MSMT. Remember: It Takes a Village! It is indeed an honor to bring this amazing story to this community of Brunswick, Maine – a community not so far removed from Celie’s community if we’re honest in our story telling. We all want to find purpose, belonging, to believe in ourselves, to feel safe and loved. I encourage you to take the journey with this group of amazing artists. Clap, tap your feet, talk back, immerse yourself in this community. Tune your ears to the language, sounds of nature, music. Feel the rhythms of backwoods rural Georgia in the 19101940. It is hot and the land is lush with cotton-fields, corn, pecan and peach trees, and peanut plants. This is the setting for the coming of age journey for young Celie, a journey that causes her to question faith, spirituality, sexuality, love, family, humanity, and community. By the end of her journey she comes to realize that she alone is enough; she is worthy; she is here with a purpose. “The book’s intent: To explore the difficult path of someone who starts out in life already a spiritual captive, but who, through her own courage and the help of others, breaks free into the realization that she, like nature itself, is a radiant expression of the heretofore perceived as quite distant Divine. If it is true that it is what we run from that chases us, then The Color Purple (this color that is always a surprise but everywhere in nature) is the book that ran me down while I sat with my back to it in a field. No one is exempt from the possibility of a conscious connection to All That Is.” – Alice Walker, the author of The Color Purple Best Regards, E.Faye Butlerv* Director, The Color Purple

A multidisciplinary artist and visionary thinker whose range of imagination and productivity knows no bounds, her success exuberantly defies categorization; ‘unique’ pales as a descriptor. Willis is a Grammy-winning and Emmy- and Tony- nominated composer whose hit songs – including Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September” and “Boogie Wonderland;” The Pointer Sisters’ ‘Neutron Dance;” Pet Shop Boys with Dusty Springfield’s “What Have I Done To Deserve This;” and The Rembrandts’ “I’ll Be There For You (Theme From Friends)” – have sold over 50 million records. STEPHEN BRAY (Music & Lyrics) Stephen Bray is thrilled to be making his Broadway debut with The Color Purple. After beginning music studies with private instruction in Detroit, Bray continued training at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Working with Madonna, he wrote and produced many of her top-ten recordings, including “Angel;” “Into the Groove;” “Papa Don’t Preach;” “True Blue;” and “Express Yourself.” Performing with Breakfast Club, he earned a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist and a top-ten single. He has composed and produced for multiplatinum artists including The Jets; Gladys Knight; and Kylie Minogue. ABOUT BOWDOIN COLLEGE Founded in 1794, Bowdoin enrolls approximately 2,000 students from across America and around the world who are admitted for their accomplishments and promise without regard for their financial circumstances. Among the nation’s most selective colleges, Bowdoin also enrolls a higher percentage of its admitted students than most of its peers. This year the College received a record 9,446 applications for about 500 spots in the Class of 2026, a five-year increase of 30 percent. Nearly 50 percent of Bowdoin students receive need-based financial aid with loan-free packages. The average financial aid grant (funds that do not have to be repaid) is currently $54,530 a year. Ongoing work at the College is focused on considering the knowledge, skills, and creative disposition every Bowdoin student should possess upon graduation. These include a reaffirmation of the core and timeless aspects of a liberal arts education and bolstering the humanities. It also includes developing integrated thinking and interdisciplinary learning, ethical judgment and decision-making, and the capacity in Bowdoin students to engage in thoughtful, meaningful, and respectful discourse on tough issues. Bowdoin students learn from highly accomplished faculty in small classes and study in world-class facilities, including technologically advanced classrooms and laboratories, a state-of-the-art recital hall, two theaters and a center for art and dance, a celebrated art museum, and the new Roux Center for the Environment (2018) that is home to Bowdoin’s renowned interdisciplinary environmental studies program. In the spring of 2018, Bowdoin became one of a very small number of colleges and universities in America to declare carbon neutrality and recently announced an ambitious climate action plan to guide sustainability efforts at the College through 2042. In combination with the Roux Center, the recent expansion of the Schiller Coastal Studies Center (2020) on nearby Orr’s Island and the new John and Lile Gibbons Center for Arctic Studies (to be completed in early 2023) further enhance Bowdoin’s role as a leader in the teaching and study of the environment.

Notable Bowdoin Alumni Include: US President Franklin Pierce (1824)) Novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne (1825) Poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1825) Abolitionist and editor John Brown Russwurm (1826) Civil War general Oliver Otis Howard (1852) Civil War general and Maine Governor Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain (1852) Arctic explorer Robert E. REVIVAL & ANNUAL CAMPAIGN

(*Indicates MSMT Trustee, **Indicates MSMT Advisor, *** Indicates MSMT Employee)

After two of the most challenging years MSMT has experienced, we are so proud to be returning to the Pickard at full force, a feat only possible with generous support from this community. Every person who walks through our doors helps keep Maine State Music Theatre alive, but the people on this list have played a special role in our 2022 Revival Season. On behalf of the cast, crew, and company, thank you so much to everyone who contributed to our efforts over the past year. We wouldn’t be raising our curtain today without you! Want to support our work? You can join this list by donating online, over the phone, or in person. Visit msmt.org/donate or call (207) 725-0150 for details. These performances are only possible with support from community members like you. Thank you for supporting MSMT and enjoy the show! – Morgan Rodgers, Development Director Our team has made every effort to ensure that all of our donors are listed correctly. If we have made an error or omitted you, please email gifts@msmt.org so corrections can be made before the next program is printed.
