FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR The Difference Between Good Times and Bad Times
and we are forever grateful. Grandpa was so right, and I learned our MSMT family is up to the task.
Over the past sixty-two years, news regarding MSMT has been good and often times great. We have had multiple reasons for joy and pride throughout past seasons. These reasons have seemed to multiply and grow exponentially with some of the best shows in the history of the company; the largest expansion of infrastructure since the company's inception; and the renovation of 22 Elm Street. We can be proud that we have accomplished all of this and that we did it together. The symbiotic relationship between audience, theatrical staff, and Board of Trustees that creates this amazing "thing" we call MSMT is truly a sight to behold.
I mentioned the staff. Here is another place that Grandpa's phrase came into play. At the time of the crisis, there was, admittedly, a major case of shellshock at first. But that quickly gave way to "protect mode."
Before the pandemic hit (literally two weeks before), the Board of Trustees met with Stephanie and me in the first special session Board meeting of my history. In that meeting, we discussed an expansion of our facilities that would have made the experiences of interns and apprentices much better, and we deliberated over the purchase of a second smaller performing space that would have operated year-round. That second space would have been used in addition to our summer season in the Pickard Theater on Bowdoin campus.
Our entire annual staff and Board of Trustees dove headfirst into something I called "protect Victoria Crandall's dream." Over the past eight years, we had done very well and positioned ourselves for success in the future. But no one could have foreseen what this pandemic would do to us as a nation, and the arts sector was hit the hardest. People said the arts were the first domino to fall and that we would be the last to stand up. With that in mind, the staff set about cutting all costs possible and eventually participated in a state program called WorkShare – an unemployment option that allowed us to reduce the hours of staff in lieu of layoffs and collect a partial unemployment benefit. Our eleven staff members are, at the time of this writing and for the foreseeable future, still on the WorkShare program.
Then the dreaded Covid-19 crisis of 2020 hit. It arrived and destroyed our hopes for a summer season, making moot all the preparation that had already taken place. Our ticket sales had been at an all-time high, and we were poised to break all past ticket sale records. But, this is where my recounting of 2020 takes a turn.
What does this mean? It means that we all have twenty hours to accomplish the tasks required to do the business of MSMT. Every single staff member has taken on additional responsibilities; twenty hours makes success difficult and requires more organization than is usually needed. The Annual Staff cares deeply about the success of this company and ensuring that Victoria Crandall's dream stays alive for future generations. I am so grateful for the help of each and every one of them.
My Grandpa always said, "You learn more about people when the chips are down." Never in my life had my Grandpa's saying been more evident. Faced with no earned income for MSMT, I was, needless to say, scared. But then, like a miracle, ticket donations started to come in. It wasn’t just the money that made the difference. (Don’t get me wrong, the money was an absolute necessity and we are beyond grateful to have received it). It was also the notes of encouragement that came with the donations that made such an impact. They contained phrases like, "I had planned to spend it on your shows anyway, so we're happy to contribute" or "I know you need this, and I can't imagine life here without MSMT" or "Without MSMT my summer just won't be the same." Thirty-three percent of our subscribers chose to donate their tickets back to us, and that is, quite frankly, how we are still operating. In addition, MSMT had many patron trips planned for this season which also had to be canceled. Again, many of our travelers chose to donate their money, stating, "Use this as a bridge to the next time you can lead us on a trip." Those subscribers, travelers, and donors who gave, simply because they knew we needed it, are the reason the rest of the staff and I are sitting at our desks today,
I cannot say I know what is going to happen as we continue forward, but I do take some solace in knowing that Grandpa's barometer for recognizing the true value of the people in your community has served me well. I know that the MSMT Board, staff, and all of our wonderful patrons have passed Grandpa's test. MSMT has been, is, and will always be as strong as the people connected to it. Thank you for supporting this great company.

FROM THE MANAGING DIRECTOR first online series. These are just a few ways our staff rose to the occasion. When our PPP money ran out, our staff did all this while working half time and half pay. This was a hardship on all of us, but they did so out of love and dedication to this amazing organization.
As I reflect on the past year, I think of Fred McFeely Rogers, also known as Mister Rogers, who once said: "When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.'” Fiscal year 2020 started on a great note. We were keeping pace with our best year for subscriptions and our concert and young audience series were breaking records. After successful local and non-equity auditions, Curt and I went to New York for two weeks of Equity auditions to finish casting our season. Then everything changed. We watched the news as the pulse of the city shifted. By the 4th day, we knew we had to cancel auditions. What was once a busy building with dozens of auditions and rehearsals was now almost empty. That night, we made travel plans to head home and instructed the directors of our shows to prepare a list of casting vacancies in order to request video auditions. Despite the world changing around us, we still had faith that we would have our 2020 season.
Curt and I also found our focus shifted. We both attended virtual local and national meetings looking for ways to survive this crisis. Curt focused on theatre groups while I attended general not-for-profit Zooms. Curt became politically active, and I found myself wading through government forms and applications to find money to sustain us. We relied on our board for their support and expertise to guide us in this unprecedented time.
As the first case arrived in Maine and restrictions were put into place, the idea of cancelling our season became a real possibility. Curt and I agonized over this decision. We talked to the state and federal experts but quickly learned that the summer of 2020 would be one that we had never envisioned. With broken hearts, we announced that Maine State Music Theatre was cancelling its season.
Now we look to summer 2021 with hopes of producing a season. Our greatest desire is to be back on Pickard stage, but we are considering alternative plans to ensure the safety of our cast, crews, staff, and above all, our loyal patrons. I thank all of our helpers from this past year. Your love for MSMT will enable us to continue, and the MSMT staff can’t wait for the day we can thank you in person from the Pickard Theater stage. Until then, I pray for everyone’s health and safety so we can all gather together on that special day.
Without shows, there were no ticket sales. As theatres across the country closed, costume rental cancellations were unavoidable. Curt, the staff, and I went to work cutting every expense we could think of. Our goal was to minimize the financial damage to our beloved company. We worried that after the crisis ended, we would not have the means to perform at the level our audience expected.
– Stephanie Dupal
It is in these dark days of worry that the helpers arrived. To our amazement, the donations came in. About one third of our subscribers, sponsors, and advertisers declined refund of their payments in order to keep MSMT alive. Another third of our subscribers turned their tickets into gift certificates, assuring us that they would be back when our doors opened again. The response to our Life Line Fund appeal was amazing, especially when considering how this pandemic had affected so many people personally and financially. As Mr. Rogers promised, the helpers were there. I must also mention the sacrifices made by our staff. Many of them had to shift their focus and concentrate on activities other than their normal jobs. Amy, Travis, Jonna, and the costume rentals volunteers made masks to help stop the spread. Kyle and Kathi focused on our properties and took on tasks that we normally hired others to do. Amanda organized a golf tournament for the first time as well as drive-in movie nights at Fat Boy’s while running the Life Line campaign. Susie, Olivia, and Jen refunded 9000 subscribers and were the front-line contact with our concerned patrons. And Carol became the editor of our 2
2020: A Season of "Firsts" On April 21, 2020, Maine State Music Theatre canceled its summer season for the first time in its 62-year history. The theatre joined a long list of arts organizations in Maine and across the country – and around the world – that had to cancel programming because of the coronavirus pandemic. MSMT has presented musicals at Pickard Theater on the Bowdoin College campus since 1959 and has never canceled more than one individual performance because of a power outage. The theatre was on track to sell more tickets in 2020 than any other season, outpacing 2019’s subscription and single ticket sales. In the beginning of the pandemic, no one knew how long the shutdown would last or how it would affect the summer months.
Pickard Theater at Bowdoin College.
What the staff of MSMT did know was that it was going to face dire financial consequences. The revenue loss, to date, has been substantial, with the annual staff team turning their focus to fundraising to make up for the lack of income. Thirty-three percent of subscribers and single ticket buyers converted their tickets into tax-deductible donations to the MSMT Lifeline Fund – set up to sustain the theatre throughout the crisis. Many sponsors and advertisers did the same, and still others made additional monetary gifts to the theatre in response to the closure. Unlike other theater companies that have flexibility with their schedule, MSMT doesn’t own its performance space and is locked into a hard end to its season in August. MSMT also operates a lucrative costume-rental business, but that revenue has disappeared because like MSMT, theaters across the country are closed and not renting costumes. The theatre also had to cancel co-productions with the Public Theatre in Lewiston and Portland Stage. MSMT hires more than 200 theater artists each summer, bringing them to Brunswick from New York and across the country to house them in Brunswick. The economic impact of the theatre on the Midcoast is approximately $11 to $15 million dollars annually. Public safety outweighed the financial costs, and the decision to cancel was made in direct response to recommendations by the Maine and Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That said, it was an incredibly difficult decision. “We are the current shepherds of MSMT and are responsible for protecting all that has transpired in the past,” said Artistic Director Curt Dale Clark in the cancelation message to the public. “That said, we also have a responsibility to the present and the future. There is simply no path to safely execute our season while protecting our patrons, employees, and the Brunswick community.” 2020 has been a year of firsts: the first time the theatre had to go dark for a full season; the first time it didn’t welcome a full company to the beautiful town of Brunswick, Maine; and the first time the public was called upon to support a public health crisis of this magnitude. What lies ahead are more unknowns. But what is certain is that MSMT’s staff, Board of Trustees, donors, sponsors, subscribers, ticket buyers, and volunteers – all of whom comprise what the theatre likes to refer to as the MSMT Family – has risen to the challenge of protecting and propelling MSMT into the future for many years to come. 3

MSMT COSTUMES MSMT Costumes started the 2020 Fiscal Year strong – busy with booking future rentals, enjoying the pleasure of working with a magnificent crew of volunteers who help us with repair work, and getting rental packages out the door to their destinations across America. We spent January and February revamping our Spamalot costume package (with the much needed help of many overhire stitchers) to give it new life for upcoming rentals. We also started to build prep for costumes for MSMT’s Theatre for Young Audiences production of Frozen Jr. Our rentals workspace was a hopping joint! By early March, we had booked 31 rentals for the year, already hitting close to 60% of our revenue goal for the fiscal year. We were overwhelmed with work and very happy about it. Working with Kyle Coyer, MSMT’s Production Manager, we were also shoulder deep amassing and building pieces for our booth at the USITT conference in Houston that was scheduled for early April. The booth was going to be an amazing display representing both the theatre and costume rental business, and we were excited to show it off to our industry colleagues. However, on March 11th, USITT canceled its conference. By March 13th, three of MSMT Costumes’ customers canceled their rentals. One week after Penn State received our newly revamped Spamalot costume rental package, they had to cancel their show… and it snowballed with cancelations from there. Incoming rental inquiries trickled to a stop. Almost immediately, some of our favorite theatre customers throughout the country decided to permanently close their doors. Throughout April and May, the MSMT Costumes team continued working with many customers who waffled between postponing and canceling their rentals. Uncertainty was high and we did not only have our own disappointments for MSMT Costumes and MSMT, but we witnessed, heard, and felt the sadness of our industry colleagues first hand as one-by-one every rental was being canceled or postponed. The various lockdowns within each state also left much in the air, and we had to wait until late June for some of our customers to get into their facilities in order to return our costume packages. Since April, despite the uncertainty of 2020 and a lack of rentals, we’ve remained busy at MSMT Costumes. We continued building costumes for our future Frozen Jr. costume package and began a costume build for a Cinderella costume package. While working part time hours since June, we focused on making an enormous dent in our costume repair projects and managed a several monthlong volunteer mask making drive for our community (see page 4) until masks became more widely available in the stores and online. We were also lucky to be the recipient of a plethora of various clothing and fabric donations this summer and fall. We also assisted with MSMT’s special events where we could. Although we were on track to possibly surpass our 2020 revenue budget before the pandemic hit, we did end the fiscal year on a high note with something that lifted the spirits of the entire MSMT company. The NBC TODAY show rented costumes from us for use during their tribute to Broadway Theatre segment on October 30th. They thanked Maine State Music Theatre during the show, which all of us deemed as a national “shout out.” Amazing!

COMMUNITY Masks for the Midcoast At the beginning of the pandemic, Maine State Music Theatre was struggling to find a way to give back to a community that, for 62 years, has given the theatre so much. MSMT Costumes – a division of MSMT that manages theatrical costume package rentals across the country – jumped into action. Rentals Manager Amy Mussman coordinated a robust team of volunteer stitchers to make fabric masks and scrub caps for local organizations. From May through August, the team made and distributed 4,947 masks and 58 scrub caps. Distribution included: • 2,942 masks and 58 scrub caps to Midcoast Hospital in Brunswick • 637 masks directly to community members • 387 masks to People Plus in Brunswick • 255 masks to Hope House in Lewiston • 250 masks to The Gathering Place in Brunswick • 140 masks to Oceanview at Falmouth • 123 masks to Patten Free Library in Bath • 113 masks to Bath YMCA • 100 masks to Somali Bantu Community Association
The Team Masks were created by Amy Mussman, Rentals Manager; Travis Grant, Rentals Coordinator; and Jonna Klaiber, Rentals Assistant. Volunteers who participated in the project were Jean Calderwood, Annette Dunn, Linda Gray, Jo-Ann Henninger, Lois Langbein, Edie Kilgore, Sue Mooney, Phyllis Mussman, and Mary Ellen Wilson.
“We are grateful for the outpouring of support that we have received from the community and very appreciative of MSMT and the many volunteers who are sewing cloth masks on our behalf,” said Judith Kelsh, Senior Director of Marketing Communications at Mid Coast Hospital.

MSMT Launches Web Series As MSMT announced that it was canceling its season, music supervisor Ben McNaboe had an idea for a web series that would bring together MSMT actors, techni-
cians, staff, and creatives for a series of online episodes focusing on what the theatre has meant to them. Along with Development Director Amanda Choate (co-host), and Director of Marketing and Communications Carol Marquis (video editor), Ben launched MSMTv at the beginning of June. The trio produced 13 total episodes through September. To view the series visit, MSMT on Facebook and find MSMTv in the video section, visit MSMT's YouTube channel, or visit www.msmt.org/msmtv. Thank you to everyone who volunteered to be on the show, and for all the viewers who cheered the team on. 8
Local Businesses Help MSMT During Covid-19 Crisis Since the closure of its summer 2020 season in May, Maine State Music Theatre’s 22 Elm Street offices have been quiet. The more than 150 summer staff and crew never arrived and there has been no set building, costume or props making, or backdrop painting in the theatre’s 11,000 square foot shop. The eleven annual staff are working at half-time – focusing on planning the 2021 season and fundraising to make up the loss of this year’s revenue. But recently, there was a flurry of activity outside the MSMT offices as Crooker Construction provided longneeded paving of the building’s adjacent parking lot.
The newly paved lot was installed by Crooker Construction at MSMT's 22 Elm Street building. Photo by Kyle Coyer.
The paving costs were part of a sponsorship trade package with Crooker for the 2020 season, and while MSMT hasn’t been able to provide the perks that go along with sponsorship – advertising in the program, mentions from the stage, tickets to performances, and more – Crooker came through with their promise and did the work regardless. “Even though we will offer the sponsorship benefits to Crooker in future seasons, the fact that they did it now, while really getting nothing in return, is a testament to how much people in this community support one another,” said MSMT Artistic Director Curt Dale Clark. Crooker is just one of dozens of Maine businesses which have shown support to MSMT by donating their sponsorship money without getting the usual benefits in return. In all, 40 businesses have donated all or part of their 2020 sponsorship or advertising money to MSMT’s Lifeline Fund. In addition, Kennebec Savings Bank, another Lifeline sponsor, recently provided a grant to help sustain MSMT and other theatres in Maine. Through its new KSB Supports Local Theaters program, they awarded $12,000 COVID-19 relief grants to five theaters within its service area, including MSMT. The coronavirus has had a devastating impact on theaters throughout Maine and the rest of the country. In a recent study conducted by Americans for the Arts, 59% of arts organizations have remained closed since the pandemic began. At least ten percent believe they will not survive this crisis – a potential loss of 12,000 organizations nationwide. “We’re incredibly grateful for the generosity of companies like Kennebec Savings Bank and Crooker Construction,” said Clark. “Thanks to the support from business partners and the dedication of our patrons and donors, we will survive the COVID-19 pandemic and continue bringing Broadway to Brunswick.”

FUNDRAISERS Golfing and Musicals? Maine State Music Theatre found a way to successfully mesh 18 holes of golf with a musical celebration at the MSMT Golf Classic, held at the Falmouth Country Club in September. The event – which featured costumes, celebrity golfers, and live performances – raised $45,000 thanks to a great turnout of golfers and supporters. While the day started off a little late due to frost (Maine…), everyone had a great time with a golf scramble, prizes, lunch, and entertainment afterward. MSMT celebrities who attended the event included David Girolmo (Lion, The Wizard of Oz), Andy Kindig (The Wizard, The Wizard of Oz) and Robert Creighton (Igor, Young Frankenstein) Charis Leos (Dolly, Hello, Dolly), Heidi Kettenring (Milly, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers), and Michael William Nigro (Jim Hawkins, Treasure Island). Thanks to generous corporate sponsorship from Highland Green, Cumberland Crossing by Oceanview, and Oceanview at Falmouth, all proceeds from the event went directly to providing critical funding needed to make up for the loss of revenue from the theatre’s canceled 2020 season. Summer Lovin' With Fat Boy and MSMT Brunswick's iconic Fat Boy Drive-In hosted two sold-out benefit "dinner and a movie" events in early fall. The events raised nearly $3,000 for MSMT's Lifeline Fund. The first was a showing of the film version of Mamma Mia!, one of the four summer musicals scheduled to run at the Pickard Theatre for the 2020 season. Due to the overwhelming success of the first event, they sponsored a second event – this time showing the movie version of Grease. Both events were drive-in style viewings with dinner packages – from Fat Boy's crowd-pleasing burgers and lobster rolls to soup by Kamasouptra in Portland and oysters from Maine Oyster Company in Portland – to raise money for MSMT’s Lifeline Fund. No MSMT event would be complete without props and costumes, and there were plenty on hand. At Mamma Mia the theatre gave out light up tambourines, which had been already purchased for the expected cast of Mamma Mia!. MSMT hosted a contest for the best 50's costume during the showing of Grease.
A Sweet Way to Support MSMT With flavors like "Bee Our Guest," "I Fall to Reese's," and "Hopelessly Devoted to Cashew," the summer got a whole lot sweeter when Gelato Fiasco brought back eight prior show-stopping gelato hits as special handpacked pints in August. For six summers, Gelato Fiasco has sponsored Maine State Music Theatre and offered a special themed flavor for the run of each show (that’s four per summer for six years!). Many of you have probably been part of the 10:30 PM post-show crowd, hoping to push summer nights in downtown Brunswick just a little later. As the stage went dark this summer, Gelato Fiasco hatched the plan to bring back the most delicious part of the season and donate 50% of every pint back to MSMT's Lifeline Fund. The event raised nearly $3,500.

LIFELINE SPONSORS Maine State Music Theatre is blessed to have a supporting cast of sponsors ranging from locally owned and operated businesses to regional and national corporations. They all understand how vital it is to sustain the performing arts so that we can all share the joy that live theatre brings to our lives. Season 2020 was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent restrictions on gatherings. The following sponsors, advertisers, and friends have donated all or part of their sponsorships, advertisements, and in-kind donations to the MSMT Lifeline Fund, helping to make it possible to offset losses and plan for the 2021 season.
