2021
Year in Review
1
FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR While the year started with the lingering uncertainty of 2020, there was hope on the horizon. It was still an uneasy hope having weathered the only cancelled season in the 63-year history of MSMT. Despite the generous donations from so many patrons, we still had to confront a 2021 season without any earned income from the season that never was. With the advent of vaccines and dropping caseloads, we felt that we may actually see the light at the end of this tunnel. Our annual staff started to consider ways in which we could safely produce, keeping social distancing requirements in mind. The limitations of the Pickard Theater, both in seating and calendar availability, left us wondering if having a typical season would be a financially sound decision. In early June of 2021, Governor Mills lifted the restrictions on social distancing, and while it was glorious news, the MSMT staff now had another issue: lack of time. Due to the late nature of the announcement, it became evident that we would have to limit our use of the Pickard to August only. And we used every available moment to fill that stage with productions. I look back fondly on those shows this summer during which COVID-19 seemed to be in the rear view.
the audiences loved it. However, it became apparent that continuing the rest of the season was not monetarily prudent. It was with a heavy heart that we had to cancel our remaining three shows. Has it been a tough couple of years? Absolutely. Have we weathered the storm? It’s too early to tell. But I can assure you that MSMT has the staff and leadership in place to make the best of any bad situation. We are already planning for a fantastic 2022 season, and with theatrical nature, we are full of hope and promise that 2022 will be that much sweeter. From the bottom of my heart, I thank every supporter of this great company for your generosity, patience, understanding, and optimism.
Having only one month in the Pickard, we combed the area looking for other venues in which to house performances in an attempt to lengthen the season. Fortunately, we found a beautiful facility who welcomed us graciously: The Westbrook Performing Arts Center. The plan was coming together surprisingly well. Despite the time crunch, sales were on the uptick. Many new patrons from further south were purchasing tickets, and we saw this as an opportunity to spread the MSMT magic. In addition, the Westbrook facility could seat almost double that of the Pickard. It looked like we had made a turn toward a more positive future.
– Curt Dale Clark
As you all know, that optimism was short lived. When another wave of the virus hit the state, ticket sales slowed. As the environment regarding masks and vaccine mandates heated, sales were replaced with refunds. Jersey Boys may have been one our best produced shows, and 2
FROM THE MANAGING DIRECTOR This year was a period of highs and lows for Maine State Music Theatre. After being shuttered for all of 2020, we entered 2021 full of hope that we would return to normal. We moved forward with plans for our regular summer season, but without a clear mandate from the state of Maine that we would be allowed to be fully open, we waited to make finalized plans. As winter turned to spring, cases of COVID-19 continued to decline, and the state finally fully reopened in late May. With our Pickard Theater dates just around the corner, we realized the season we hoped to produce would need to be drastically changed. Thankfully, Bowdoin College was more than willing to work with us to use the Pickard Theater for free during our regular rental period. Still, the theatre would not be available after the end of August because students would be returning for in-person learning. Fortunately, the Westbrook Performing Arts Center was willing to rent their theater to us in September and October. A new season was formed with concerts and children’s shows utilizing the Pickard Theater with full productions of Jersey Boys, Cinderella, and The Rocky Horror Show in Westbrook.
After much discussion, we made the very tough and disappointing decision to cancel our productions of Cinderella and Alice and Wonderland. We did not want to deny our Fellowship Performers their chance to shine, so we moved our production of The Rocky Horror Show to Cadenza, a cabaret-style performance space in Freeport.
We quickly hired a technical company, made plans for our concerts, and cast Jersey Boys. We were lucky enough to receive the Shuttered Venues Operators Grant. Combined with a second round of Paycheck Protection Program funds, we felt we had the needed influx of cash to proceed with our plans.
The cancellation of part of our season was not the only victim of the a new wave. The rental of costumes from our rentals division did not rebound, and with no sign of it changing soon, we made the difficult decision to shutter our rentals division. We will honor our few existing rentals, but we will not be seeking new rentals and will take some time to decide the best course to proceed with our inventory. The one bright spot for the rentals division was creating a magnificent set of costumes that came to life on stage at the Fulton Theatre in their production of Cinderella. We hope to present them on our stage in the future.
Our initial show of Dream: the Music of the Everly Brothers was a shared production with Portland Stage. Sales were strong, and we took that to signify that we were on track for a successful season. Unfortunately, that trend halted. Another wave of the COVID-19 virus hit Maine, and the number of cases and hospitalizations started to rise. Our audience became nervous, and it affected our sales. Our remaining concerts, except for Piano Men: The Music of Billy Joel and Elton John, experienced sluggish sales, refund requests, and canceled performances.
As we close 2021, we are keeping an eye on 2022. We can only hope that the vaccine will slow the spread of COVID-19, and we can make a triumphant return. We are proceeding cautiously but with every intent to be back to our entire show season at the Pickard Theater.
We established a mask mandate and then a vaccination mandate to encourage our audiences to feel safe and return to the theatre, but sales continued to dwindle.

EDUCATIONAL FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM Maine State Music Theatre’s Educational Fellowship Program provides a training ground for early career professionals to bridge the gap between education and the professional world. Interns work with successful directors, choreographers, designers, performers, and technicians from New York and New England. The Education Director and Artistic Director plan a variety of classes and lectures given by guest performers, directors, and our managing and artistic directors. In addition, performance, stage management, and stage operations interns have the advantage of earning EMC points towards membership in the Actors’ Equity Association for each week of participation in the program. The program invites individuals to take part in the program at three phases of career progression: • Intern (entry level) • Apprentice (advanced level) • Journeyperson (senior level)

MSMT’s 2021 Educational Fellows came from all over the country, with 6 interns, 9 apprentices, and 7 journeypeople. In addition to helping create Jersey Boys, the Fellowship company produced and/or performed in three concerts: Welcome Home, Piano Men, and Christine and Patsy Together Again. They were also instrumental in producing the Theatre for Young Audiences versions of Beauty and the Beast and Shrek, Jr. MSMT’s performance fellows also entertained at Highland Green and OceanView at Falmouth.

FUNDRAISERS & EVENTS Cooking Class with Cherie Scott In February, Maine State Music Theatre tried something very new. Cherie Scott, new member of the MSMT Board of Trustees and known for her culinary brand "Mumbai to Maine," hosted a cooking class to benefit MSMT. Cherie had recently launched a line of home-style, regional, Indian-simmer sauces based on her heritage family recipes and handcrafted in small batches in Boothbay. The class quickly filled up! While the company prepped endlessly for the event, the virtual component proved to be trickier than anticipated. Through the glitches and connection issues, the virtual attendees stuck with us. Thankfully, the cooking segment was pre-recorded and participants were able to view it at their leisure. The event was sponsored by Skordo, Luke's Lobster, Bixby & Co, and Bluet Wild Blueberry Sparkling Wine.
(Above) Cherie Scott, founder of Mumbai to Maine and MSMT Board member and Curt Dale Clark, Artistic Director, enjoy a dish from the virtual cooking class held in February. (Below) Ben McNaboe accompanies Kevin Lacey at the season kick-off.
We learned a lot during this event and hope to use all our new knowledge for any future virtual events.
Season Kick-Off Maine State Board of Trustees member Ed Bradley and his wife Jo hosted an intimate season kick-off event at their home in early July. Guests were treated to performances by Performance Fellows Natalie Bellamy, Rebecca Carroll, Mikayla Jane Clifford, Matthew Hakel, Kevin Lacey, Maggie McCown, John Pletka, Caroline Quinn, Lathan A. Roberts, and John Rouleau.
Fat Boy Drive In Sock Hop Keeps us Dancing Fat Boy Drive In's 35th Annual Sock Hop with proceeds benefiting Maine State Music Theatre was held this year on August 28th with all the familiar fun the event has brought for three and a half decades. Music, face painting, dance contest, food and drink, and, of course, vintage cars, helped to raise $861 for MSMT.
The "Susie Sharp" Honorary Apartment Fund After ten years of service to Maine State Music Theatre, Susie Sharp is retiring as Audience Services Manager. Susie is, in so many ways, the lifeblood of this organization. MSMT was endlessly lucky to have her on our team for over 20 years in various roles, and we want to do something special to celebrate her legacy. Over the last few years, MSMT has acquired, renovated, and rented properties in Brunswick and Topsham, to 18
house our seasonal team of technicians and actors each summer. We have another big project on our hands at one of our buildings where two unrenovated apartments will be opening up for our next season. They need work before they are ready to be called "home" for the summer. The Susie Sharp Apartment Fund will pay for the complete renovation of one of these apartments in honor of Susie. When finished, Susie will pick out styles and colors for the apartment. It will be dedicated in her honor so that every actor who comes through our doors knows the warm welcome she has given our patrons over the last decade.

Concert of Gratitude After a long year of uncertainty and challenges, MSMT held a free concert on the Brunswick Mall in August as a sincere thank you for the community's support. The show featured many MSMT performers as well as the "Four Seasons" from our production of Jersey Boys. The concert was part of the “Music on the Mall” series through the Brunswick Downtown Association and was made possible in part by a generous gift from Norway Savings Bank.

The Maine State Music Theatre Costume Sale, one of the theatre's most popular special events, made a comeback this year after 2020's cancellation due to COVID-19. The sale was held on October 15th and 16th and featured genuine theatrical costumes, plus ballgowns, shoes, hats, fabrics, modern clothing, historical replicas, masks, accessories, men's wear, vintage clothing, furs, wigs, and more. To lessen crowds, the theatre sold tickets – limited to 20 tickets per hour – to this year's event. The Costume Sale raised $8,300 for MSMT.
London Theatre Trip The annual London Theatre Trip was back this October with 17 travelers spending eight days in the city. The group saw nine West End shows including Anything Goes; & Juliet (a new show without Romeo); Prince of Egypt; Tina, The Tina Turner Musical; Dear Evan Hansen; Come from Away; Cinderella; Shark is Broken; and Back to the Future.

STAFF & ADMINISTRATIVE UPDATES Maine State Music Theatre, like many theatres across the globe, had to pivot in early 2021 to keep the staff safe and cut costs, all while continuing to keep the company running smoothly. The entirety of the Annual Staff continued to work half-time through March 2021. Due to COVID-19 revenue losses, the theatre made the difficult decision to permanently eliminate the position of Costume Rentals Assistant. The company also experienced some big staff changes this year with the departure of Development Director, Amanda Choate, moving on to a career in real estate and the retirement of Audience Services Manager, Susie Sharp. In June, the theatre hired Julie Eyer as the new Audience Services Manager. In this position, Julie oversees management of the theatre's Box Office and its summer employees. Julie recently moved to Maine from Boston, where she worked for the Boston Bruins, Celebrity Series of Boston, Broadway in Boston/Blue Man Group, and ArtsEmerson. Originally from Harrisburg, PA, she has a BA in English and Theatre from Susquehanna University and a MA in Theatre Education from Emerson College. Also in June, the theatre hired Morgan Rodgers as the new Development Director. She oversees all fundraising, sponsorship, program advertising, and events. Morgan worked as a Legislative Aide for the Florida House of Representatives, Campaign Manager for Andrew Learned, and as Resident Properties Master at North Shore Music Theatre. She has a Bachelor of Science in Marketing and a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre from Florida State University. MSMT Costumes, the division of MSMT that facilitates costume package rentals with regional and national theatre companies, started the 2021 year hopeful that the theatres across the country, closed due to COVID-19, would once again start producing, and, in turn, want to rent costume packages. When the Delta varient started to spread throughout the states, it was clear that it would be another year of lost revenue. Due to lack of costume rentals – compounded by the lack of ticket sale revenue – the theatre once again had to make very difficult staffing decisions. In October, the theatre announced the elimination of two positions: Costume Rentals Manager Amy Mussman and Costume Rentals Coordinator Travis Grant. We thank them for all their hard work and dedication over the years, and we wish them well in their new endeavors.
Farewell Susie Sharp You will be sorely missed by all of us here at MSMT! When we say “all of us,” it includes the administrative annual staff, the summer team, the Board of Trustees, and, most of all, the patrons of MSMT. “Where did you find her? She is amazing!” is a common phrase from visitors, and patrons have a million stories of the things you have done for them and how grateful they are for your attention to detail.
Susie Sharp cheers to Maine State Music Theatre.
Our list of adjectives for you include loyal, honest, witty, humorous, kind, intelligent, forthright, humble, brave, beautiful, remarkable, other worldly, amazing, inspiring, eclectic, consistent, persistent, magnetic, nurturing, comforting, and all around stunning. To say you will be missed is the understatement of the century, and we are happy that you will still be connected to the theatre. Susie, on behalf of all of the Midcoast, we love you! Love, Your MSMT Family

Generous Patrons Donate Tickets to Healthcare Workers As Maine State Music Theater closed out the 2021 season with the Tony Award-winning Jersey Boys – we decided to give back. MSMT donated nearly 90 tickets to frontline healthcare workers in recognition of their tireless efforts to keep our community healthy. We also offered the opportunity for patrons who didn't feel comfortable attending a performance to donate their ticket to a healthcare worker rather than get a monetary refund. The generosity was overwhelming with just over $5,500 raised in ticket donations. Donated tickets were given to healthcare workers at Scarborough Surgical Center, Mercy Hospital, Maine Medical Center, and MidCoast Hospital.
