FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Dear MSMT Family,

It’s been another year where we relied on you heavily, and another year when you came through for us with flying colors. I simply cannot tell you how grateful and thrilled we are to have finally produced a full season of shows (minus a few performances of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat) to reward your faith and trust.

The Sound of Music was the perfect opening to the season with audiences exclaiming “I’ve seen it a thousand times, but this production was extraordinary.” The cast, the sets, the costumes, the lights, and that glorious Rodgers and Hammerstein score combined to create the splendor and grandeur we all deserved for weathering these past years.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, while abbreviated due to COVID-19, did not disappoint. The energy and enthusiasm radiated from the stage with much desired choreography and dance not seen in the the Pickard since 2019.

The Color Purple was truly a phenomenon and one of the most diverse productions in Maine State Music Theatre history. The vocal strength, the pathos, and raw emotion of this cast brought audiences to their feet throughout the show and brought more than one tear to their eyes.

We closed our season with the powerhouse originally intended for 2020: Kinky Boots. As soon as the cast took the stage, they wowed audiences at every performance, combining all the elements of success from the rest of the season. The emotion, the exuberance, the energy, and the fantastic production values

melded to ensure patrons “lost their minds” during the finale of the show. Kinky Boots was the perfect way to end our 2022 season in a heartfelt and joyous fashion. Our intention for this past season was to remind audiences why they wanted to help us survive and continue to enrich lives through musical theatre. I think we accomplished that. We are looking forward to filling our theatre in 2023 in the manner we had become accustomed pre-pandemic. I thank you for your patience, love, and understanding, and I hope you will continue to cherish Maine State Music Theatre as we move into the new year.

FROM THE MANAGING DIRECTOR

After two years of cancellations and tenuous production limitations, we headed into 2022 feeling a welcomed return to normal. Government restrictions were lifted, and we planned a full season of performances for our patrons.

Our first taste of “normal” was in New York City in the spring. Despite being limited in-person auditions, it was an emotional time for everyone to be in the same room. Auditioners entered with masks, and we had to maintain a 6-foot separation. Broadway required either proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test, but we were back in the city and listening to live performances again! While in New York, our single ticket sales had begun. Although not as strong as pre-pandemic years, demand was high, and it was apparent Maine was ready to return to live theatre.

Our return to a full season did not come without challenges. Actors’ Equity Association, the professional actors’ union, mandated a Memorandum of Understanding (MOA) that had to be followed in order to employ their members. With assistance from Bowdoin College and MidCoast Hospital, we were able to secure the needed tests and medical assistance required to produce. Because of health concerns, we cast understudies and swings for the first time in our history. These precautions helped keep us on stage for most of the season.

During our production of The Sound of Music, we did experience several cases of COVID-19, but we utilized our understudies and did not have to cancel performances. Unfortunately, we were not as lucky during the run of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Actors’ Equity required us to close the production once we had six positive cases. It was heartbreaking to cancel the final 10 shows of Joseph…, but it was truly a situation beyond our control.

The Color Purple opened cautiously, and we were thrilled to close the show with all 24 performances running as scheduled with the original cast. Kinky Boots closed our season, and while we did need our understudies and swings, the show continued smoothly.

Our Concerts and Theatre for Young Audience series were also very successful. Frozen, Jr. was our first show that we presented with a cast of entirely local youngsters. Originally planned for our 2020 season, it was amazing to finally see the show on our stage. The enthusiasm of our young actors was infectious, and we hope to continue presenting performances using local students as part of our educational mission.

COVID-19 protocols were not the only change in our 2022 operations. For the first time ever, MSMT conducted a season without an Educational Fellowship Program. Due to a chang-

ing landscape, we looked to hire more experienced full-time employees and a smaller technical staff. These changes to our program, as well as a lower number of ticket sales, contributed to the financial challenges we experienced. We were fortunate to enter the season with a Shuttered Venue Operator Grant, which helped in covering added costs. To offset expenses, our Development Director, Morgan Rodgers, created a Revival Fund to help close some of our financial gaps. In addition, and with the help of a wonderful group of tireless volunteers, the first MSMT Yard Sale was born, adding a generous amount of money to the fund.

While we began our season with concerns of financial success, our annual staff did everything they could to control expenses and increase income. Because of their dedication, we are entering 2023 with a healthy fiscal cushion. I want to give special thanks to the following:

• Kathi Kacinski found cost cutting measures in housing our company as well as treating our Covid cases.

• Kyle Coyer and his technical staff created a season’s worth of productions while staying significantly under budget.

• Patrick Livingston and Kyle Coyer were able to secure new costume rentals.

• Morgan Rodgers increased donations to both our Annual Campaign as well as our Revival Fund.

• Jen Blackstone helped navigate changes to our Box Office, and Carla Maria Sullwold secured many additional grants for the theatre.

2022 was also successful due to the skills of Carol Marquis, Olivia Wenner, and Julie Eyer, all who left MSMT during this past season to pursue new opportunities. I look forward to working with our new staff: Jesse Perez, Markis Larrivee, and Ally Collins, as each are full of exciting new ideas.

With our first post-pandemic season in the history books, we can once again focus on the future of Maine State Music Theatre. Our newly approved strategic plan is our blueprint to a stronger and more robust future. I look forward to working with the MSMT Board and staff to create a better MSMT for future generations.

Sensory-Friendly Performances

Thanks to generous grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Elsie and William Viles Foundation, The Alfred M. Senter fund, and The Onion Foundation, MSMT provided free performances of Jack and the Beanstalk and A Very Fractured Tale of Robin Hood that welcomed families with children with sensory sensitivities.

Maine State Music Theatre is committed to helping young audiences experience the magic of theatre by providing Theatre for Young Audiences performances each season. However, a standard theatrical experience may not always be accessible for children with social, cognitive, or physical challenges. The sensory-friendly performance project gives the theatre the opportunity to demonstrate further its commitment to be an inclusive, supportive community providing theatrical experience for all patrons.

SPECIAL EVENTS

We often say there is more to do in Maine than any Mainer could do in a lifetime. Those words rang true this summer on the MidCoast, starting with the Amazing Technicolor Yard Sale in April. Led by a fantastic team of volunteers, this event was a marketing and development success. The sale allowed us to partner with local businesses and patrons long before our summer season started, raising over $20,000 for the Revival Fund in just one day!

Teaser Tuesdays at the Curtis Memorial Library were a big hit once again (especially the popcorn), giving audiences a sneak peek at what to expect on stage come summertime. For Mother's Day, Board Member Cherie Scott helped our team organize another new event: A Cooking Class at the Maine Tasting Center in Wiscasset, which also served as a fundraiser for the theatre. The mother-daughter-son groups had a blast cooking and tasting along with Cherie.

Artistic Director Curt Dale Clark served as the Keynote Speaker for the Brunswick Downtown Association for a meeting hosted in our large rehearsal room.

Our season kickoff (hosted by OneSixtyFive) featured performances from local USM students. The event was

bursting at the seams and left everyone very excited for the season.

From performances at Brunswick Pride and Music on the Mall to monthly happy hours at the Tontine Mall with the MSMT Singers, our patrons were entertained even when they were not at a mainstage performance at the Pickard! We partnered with Maine Street Bath to add concert performances at the Library Park. We visited sponsors like Oceanview at Falmouth, Highland Green, and the Highlands to entertain our local patrons. This season's sensory-friendly performances saw an all-time high in attendance, and our Peek Behind the Curtain Series was more popular than ever. Moderated by Carla Maria Sullwold, this series gives audiences a look at what it is like working on an MSMT show. Felicia Fields (Tonynominee, The Color Purple Original Broadway Cast) joined director E. Faye Butler for a special talkback about MSMT's production of The Color Purple.

We wrapped up our season with assistance from board member Ed Bradley who served as grill master at our end-of-the-season blowout barbecue. All in all, the public proved eager to get involved again, and we were thrilled to welcome everyone back with open arms.

REVIVAL CAMPAIGN

Success for the Revival Fund – Thank You!

I joined MSMT in the wake of the pandemic, and like many theatres, we were hard-pressed to figure out how we would get our heads back above water after a year of canceled performances. Between support from foundations, government grants, and the incredible generosity of our patrons, MSMT had made it through 2020 and was preparing for what everyone hoped would be a firecracker 2021 season. As with so much these days, everything did not go as planned…

At the start of the 2022 fiscal year, we were cautiously optimistic. We had a great season lined up and were prepared for the extensive testing protocols that were now required for our staff, performers, and technicians. But with continuing health and safety concerns and looming economic worries, ticket sales were slower than we hoped. We knew we could not lean on the same kind of institutional support widely available during the pandemic two years ago. The numbers were not going to add up.

So we turned to you.

We set an ambitious goal to raise $400,000 to make up the difference between what we needed to produce our 2022 season and where we found ourselves in January 2022. You rose to the occasion! Over 1,700 patrons came together to help us reach our goal and then pass it!

To every donor who helped us reach this goal, THANK YOU! Thank you for your love of the arts and willingness to help keep them alive when we need them the most. This season would not have been possible without your generosity. We may not know what the future holds, but I know that with you on our team, we will continue to uphold the traditions created by Victoria Crandall in 1959 for decades to come.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you!

The audience for Maine State Music Theatre is drawn from throughout Maine. Fifty percent of attendees reside in the towns of Bath, Brunswick, and Topsham as well as the Greater Portland area. Another fourty-four percent come from the Augusta, Lewiston, Boothbay/Rockland/Camden, Downeast, Southern Maine and other areas of the state. Six percent come from out of state.

Seventy-four percent are female; eighty-six percent are over the age of 50. More than sixty percent are season subscribers. Eighty-five percent have a college degree. Eighty percent have household incomes above the Maine state median.
