Three Range Rover Diesel Hybrid prototypes recently completed 10,472 miles along the Silk Trail from Solihull, home of Land Rover, to Mumbai, home of Jaguar Land Rover’s owners, TATA The journey covered 53 days, 13 countries and two continents putting the Range Rover Hybrid prototypes through their final extreme engineering sign-off test Land Rover’s first ever production hybrid to go on sale in first quarter 2014.

THE SILK TRAIL

(

On

the 14 October, three Range Rover Diesel Hybrid prototypes have completed the ultimate engineering sign-off test by traversing 13 countries over 53 days from Solihull, UK, to Mumbai, India. It is the world’s first ever hybrid expedition along the Silk Trail and one of the boldest driving adventures ever pursued by Land Rover. Hostile conditions on the route included asphalt roads riddled with vast and deep potholes, dusty desert trails in 43°C heat and numerous miles of mud and gravel tracks and cattle trails. In addition, river crossings, passes clinging to the edges of mountains partly blocked by rock falls, the thin air of extremely high altitudes and the dense and erratic traffic of Chinese and Indian roads all added to the test of man and machine. The Silk Trail 2013 expedition was the final validation test for the Range Rover Hybrid before it is signed-off for production. From the home of the Legend in Solihull, UK, it blazed a trail through France, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, China (including Tibet), Nepal and India. For much of this distance the expedition followed the legendary Silk Road trading routes that first connected Asia with Europe more than 2,500 years ago. Overnight halts were made in hotels, hostels and tents at many of the same staging posts visited all those years ago by Silk Road merchants, missionaries and mercenaries.

(

THE SILK TRAIL

(

Where

the north and south Silk Roads split, near the remote city of Kashgar in north-western China, the expedition pioneered a mountainous route never previously completed by a vehicle from outside the country and never previously seen in its entirety by any westerner – the Xinjiang-Tibet highway, which put the new Range Rover Hybrid through its paces at heights of over 5,300 metres above sea level. Seven consecutive days were spent at altitudes between 11,000 and 17,648 feet (3,350 and 5,379 metres). At such great heights, oxygen content in the air is reduced from the 21% found at sea-level to as little as 10%, making movement more difficult for humans and internal combustion engines. The Range Rover convoy continued to make good progress, benefitting from the electric motor’s instant torque at 0 rpm and despite being laden with heavy loads including luggage, camping gear, food, medical equipment, and aerodynamicallyunfriendly roof-racks carrying spare wheels, tyres and jerry cans of fuel. Negotiating tracks so sticky with mud that they were impassable to other types of vehicle, the Range Rover’s hybrid engine combination – with a 35kW electric motor supporting the TDV6 3.0 litre turbo-diesel engine – returned excellent fuel consumption for a vehicle so spacious and powerful. Throughout the epic journey the Range Rover Hybrids typically returned 36 to 37 mpg.

Land Rover products are currently sold in approximately 180 global markets. Land Rover’s first ever production hybrid is to go on sale in the first quarter of 2014 in some selected markets only

Rover development engineers closely monitored data loggers fitted to each car, sending back more than 300 gigabytes of detailed technical records to their engineering team at Gaydon in the UK. The purpose of the expedition was not to test the reliability of mechanical components, which are already proven, but to fine-tune the calibration of engine and transmission software to ensure perfectly seamless performance in all terrains and extreme temperatures and altitudes. Technical setbacks reflected the roughness of the road surfaces: 15 punctures among the expedition’s three Range Rover Hybrids and four support vehicles, four wheels damaged by deep potholes, and four windscreens cracked by stones thrown-up on loose surfaces. Peter Richings, Jaguar Land Rover Hybrids and Electrification Director who took part in the final leg from Jaipur to Mumbai commented: “The world’s first diesel hybrid expedition along the Silk Trail pioneered an ambitious route across Europe and Asia that would have been impassable to most other types of vehicle – but no matter how hostile the conditions, the Range Rover Hybrid prototypes took it all in their stride. In developing the hybrid-powered Range Rover, our objective was to gain hybrid’s fuel economy and carbon emissions advantages without compromising the Range Rover’s goanywhere capabilities, its cabin space or its refinement. The success of this remarkable expedition clearly demonstrates we have achieved that.” CGM

THE SOUTH AFRICAN MOTOR INDUSTRY IN A GLOBAL CONTEXT

by Niccolò Gargiulo

South

Africa has seen a solid growth in its automotive industry over the past few decades. By international standards though, the South African automotive industry is a very small one, accounting for just over 1% of world vehicle production. Statistics from The International Organisation of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA), show that in 2012, the global industry built 84 141 209 vehicles — 63 069 541 cars and 21 071 668 commercial vehicles. South Africa’s 539,424 was a fraction of that produced by the likes of China (19,27-million), United States (10,33-million), Japan (9,94-million), Germany (5,65-million), South Korea (4,56-million) India (4,15-million) and Brazil (3,34-million). However, under the Automotive Production and Development Programme (APDP) — a government-administered strategy that came into force at the beginning of 2013 and will run until 2020 — the South African industry hopes to more than double domestic production to 1,2-million. If it can do that, it will not only transform itself in global terms but also potentially have a big impact on the country’s economy. Its domestic importance is already significant. The motor industry last year accounted for 7% of South Africa’s gross domestic product (GDP), 12,1% of exports and 16,3% of imports. Vehicle manufacturers and their components suppliers employ over 100 000 people directly, and over one million by adding all other services suppliers.

( ( HYUNDAI Veloster Turbo AUTO NEWS

Hyundai unveiled its 150kW Veloster Turbo in South Africa to be launched locally in 2014. It will be the first model in South Africa with Hyundai’s 1.6 T-GDI engine with a highcompression, twin-scroll turbocharger. The four-cylinder produces 150kW/265Nm and is mated to either a six-speed

manual or auto and can reach 100km/h in 7.8 seconds in manual and 7.4 (automatic). The Veloster Turbo has improved steering and is fitted with a MacPherson strut at the front and torsion beam with stabliser bar (a first Hyundai SA) at the rear, coil springs and a 23mm front stabiliser.

The biennial Johannesburg International Motor Show runs in conjunction with two additional shows: the Johannesburg Truck and Bus Show and Auto Shop which collectively offer a complete representation of the motor industry, serving Sub Saharan Africa and South Africa as host country.

Then there is its role throughout the country. General Motors SA builds vehicles in Port Elizabeth and Volkswagen SA in nearby Uitenhage. Port Elizabeth is also home to Ford SA’s export-focused engine plant, most of the South African tyre industry and scores of other components suppliers. They include Tenneco, which recently concluded a deal with GMSA to export R6bn of catalytic converters to GM in the US. In East London, Mercedes-Benz SA is by far the biggest private-sector contributor to the local economy. Its car and truck assembly plant not only provides business for local suppliers, but it is also the main customer for East London’s harbour. The city was also supposed to be the base of South Africa’s own electric car project: the release of the “Joule” was cancelled when the government backed off from the program.

( ( CHEVROLET Sonic RS Camaro ZL1 AUTO NEWS

Chevrolet SA has unveiled the 103kW Sonic RS. Its exterior is more aggressive with 17 alloy rims, an RS-specific grille, chromed front fog light fixtures, black side mirrors, distinctive sills, chromed shoulder detailing and a sporty rear bumper.

Along the coast in another industrial development zone, at Coega, Chinese motor company FAW has already taken the plunge and is spending R600m on a factory to build trucks and cars. Pretoria also hopes in prosperity due to the motor industry. Ford builds Ranger pickups at Waltloo, while BMW and Nissan are in Rosslyn, along with truck-maker Tata and Japanese UD, who will shortly be joined by Iveco. Durban is less dependent on the motor industry even if Toyota builds cars, trucks and minibuses in the region.

The Sonic RS has also more power and improved handling; it will go on sale during the first quarter of 2014 pushed by a turbocharged 1.4-litre Ecotec petrol engine with figures of 103kW/200Nm. Also on show the Camaro ZL1 convertible. The 6.2-litre supercharged LSA V8 petrol engine delivers 432kW/754Nm and has a 100km/h sprint time of 4.1 seconds. It’s driven through the rear wheels by either a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox.

All this influence is bound to grow if the motor industry succeeds in increasing annual production to 1,2m. But fears rise as some see the growth of South African automotive sector as a monster. Much of this is due to the country’s recent debit history: in 2012 the South African motor industry racked up a record trade deficit of R49,2bn, after importing R136,1bn of vehicles and components, and exporting R86.9bn. That was equivalent to nearly 40% of the SA economy’s total deficit. This means that over the life of the Motor Industry Development Programme (the APDP’s predecessor which ran from 1995 to 2012) the industry ran up a combined deficit of R321,8bn, without once reporting an annual surplus. Critics say automotive incentives are running the country towards economic collapse, ignoring the fact that without incentives there would be no industry, and therefore a much greater deficit if everything were imported. Garth Strachan, trade & industry chief director for industrial policy, says: “The size of the deficit should not be used as the basis

( ( ISUZU KB AUTO NEWS

Isuzu boasted a lot of creativity at the Johannesburg Motor Show. The special KB pickup trucks were on display with various custom options. Isuzu brand manager Mlungisi Nonkonyana said: “The Isuzu KB has been delivering for Isuzu customers for six generations in South Africa.

The current generation is still a formidable competitor with class-leading fuel consumption and a 3.5-ton towing capability for the KB 300 Dteq. The workhorses of the range, the 2.5 low-pressure turbodiesel single-cabs, have the lowest operating costs in their class.”

FAW V2 South Africa’s most affordable 1.3-litre car, the FAW V2 hatchback, which has been launched at an amazing Rand 99.995, comes exceptionally well equipped. Build quality by the giant Chinese manufacturer is of a high standard in terms of materials, fit and finish. The well-proportioned and neatly-styled V2 hatch is at the upper end of the B-segment in terms of its size, with a spacious, fiveseater interior and large luggage space – 320 litres – with the load versatility of split, fold-down rear seats.

for arguing the case against the automotive support programme. No country in the world with a significant automotive industry does not provide substantial support to its automotive sector.” Last year’s inflated deficit had major external causes: first of all the seemingly neverending European economical crisis. Many of South Africa’s exporters also had to halt production for several months while updating their factories for the release of new models. However, Roger Pitot, outgoing director of the National Association of Automotive Components and Allied Manufacturers (NAACAM), is having none of the latter excuse. With seven major vehicle manufacturers, there will always be one in a state of hiatus between new models, he says. Johan van Zyl, president of Toyota SA and of the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of SA (NAAMSA), believes the gap will narrow as the APDP takes hold, though there seems little likelihood of a turnaround in the near future. As the industry approaches its 1,2-million production target, he says, so local content will rise. Depending on the manufacturer, current local content (the value percentage of SA-sourced parts and manufacturing inputs) of SA-built light vehicles ranges anywhere from 20% to 70%. Van Zyl says 1,2-million will add at least 10 percentage points. Despite his misgivings, Pitot doesn’t deny the positive impact which the MIDP brought to the motor industry. Before 1995, antiapartheid sanctions had left it isolated and under-invested. Some global companies

( ( MAZDA CX-5 - 6 - 3 AUTO NEWS

Additions to the CX-5 compact crossover powertrain lineup as well as the introduction of the Mazda6 flagship sedan and all-new Mazda3 compact sedan and hatchback were announced by Mazda in Johannesburg. The vehicles will go on sale in 2014 by Mazda Southern Africa, which will manage the sales and distribution of Mazda vehicles throughout the country.

First introduced in South Africa in 2012 with a 2.0-litre petrol engine, next year the CX-5 compact crossover will receive an injection of power thanks to the addition of two additional engines; a 2.5-litre petrol as well as a 2.2-litre twin-turbo diesel. The Mazda3 compact sedan and hatchback is currently being introduced in North America, Europe and Japan. Whi-

le incorporating SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY and KODO design, the new Mazda3 is the first vehicle to adopt the company’s new humanmachine interface concept. Designed to minimize driver distraction the new Mazda3 is available with “Active Driving” heads-up display, intuitive rotary commander control unit and 7-inch display screen.

pulled out completely. Technology and production equipment were out of date. As a result the industry was notoriously inefficient. The MIDP was the first, extended stage of a renaissance, encouraging multinationals to reinvest and modernise. It lowered protective barriers and reintroduced competition. As Van Zyl puts it: “The MIDP created the platform for survival.” It is designed to build on that by increasing localisation and creating a genuine local manufacturing industry rather one reliant on imported components. Within this scenario the South African motor industry presents every two years the Johannesburg International Motor Show where new technologies and products are displayed and where the future of motoring for the region is examined. At this years’ event the many vehicles presented will be heading to South African showrooms soon. The top manufacturers showcased both affordable compact cars and high tech concept cars which show the future direction of the brand’s design. BMW showcased its latest models including the stunning new 4 Series coupe (see it in Auto News November) which will be launched in South Africa next month. The Chinese automotive industry has come a long way in recent years and its vehicles are now rivalling many of the established brands. Great Wall Motors, for example, has announced that it will be expanding its range in the coming months and entering a number of new segments. We bring you the most important presentations, cars that will very soon hit the South African streets. CGM

Rolls-Royce Chicane Phantom Coupé

“I wanted to create a motor car that captures the unique atmosphere and history of the Goodwood Motor Circuit. The Home of Rolls-Royce’s connection to such an important centre of British motoring heritage is something that fascinates my customers,” said Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Dubai Brand Manager, Mohammed EL-Arishy. “The experience of working with Rolls-Royce’s world-class

designers to create the beautifully executed Chicane Phantom Coupé was exhilarating. The creativity, vision, skill and attention-todetail employed in the crafting of these oneoff motor cars is unsurpassed in the superluxury world.” The result, the one-of-a-kind Chicane Phantom Coupé incorporates design cues and materials that evoke Goodwood’s rich motor sport history.

A traditional interior wood-finish makes way for carbon fibre, alluding to the materials used in modern racing machines. This highly contemporary theme extends to the exterior of the car, with the bonnet and windscreen surround finished in a matte black, perfectly complementing the Gunmetal exterior paint. Coloured wheels matching the main exterior paint finish are also specified, the first time such a feature has

adorned a contemporary Rolls-Royce motor car. Hand-crafted details throughout allude to the car’s historic motor racing theme with chequered flag motif stitching to the seats echoed on the exterior with a matching Bespoke coachline. The elegant homage is completed with a metal plaque expressing the car’s name and Goodwood’s famous track layout located discreetly in the glove compartment.

manufacture implies one-off products, traditional craftsmanship, perfection and the fulfilment of the most discerning requirements. Those are the principles which the BMW Individual Manufaktur has followed for more than 20 years now. What began in the early 1990s as a bespoke BMW 750Li for Karl Lagerfeld has since evolved into a byword for customisation at the very highest level. “The BMW Individual Manufaktur is not so much a place as an idea that becomes reality on a daily basis. That idea is total customer orientation,” explains Friedrich Nitschke, President BMW M GmbH. “Here each vision of exclusivity is turned into reality.” But BMW Individual not only creates one-of-a-kind auto-

mobiles, it also designs and completes market-specific special editions and models, for example in its collaborations with watchmaker Girard Perregaux or with the renowned concert grand manufacturers Steinway & Sons. Besides the BMW Individual Manufaktur there is also the BMW Individual Collection, which rounds off the BMW Individual offering with equipment ranges that are perfectly matched to the various BMW model series and include exclusive paint finishes, high-quality leather appointments and interior trims. Striving for perfection. Through its joint ventures with renowned enterprises, the BMW Individual Manufaktur

has in recent years managed to push the envelope further while at the same time setting new benchmarks for exclusivity. The highlight to date is the BMW Individual 760Li Sterling inspired by ROBBE & BERKING. ROBBE & BERKING are among the most tradition-steeped silver manufacturers of our day. Each of their products is an expression of consummate craftsmanship and corroborates the company claim to create pleasure not just for a lifetime but for generations. “BMW and ROBBE & BERKING share far more than a passion for elegant, classic yachts – we apply the same standards to our products: in addition to pure technical utility, pleasing the customer is a foreground consideration,” ex-

plains Oliver Berking, the fifth-generation owner and CEO of ROBBE & BERKING. “At the same time our products embody the ethos of the manufactory – a striving towards perfect craftsmanship and timeless elegance coupled with keen attention to the smallest detail. The BMW Individual 760Li Sterling inspired by ROBBE & BERKING is a wonderful illustration of this.” Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design, adds this: “On my first visit to ROBBE & BERKING, I was particularly impressed by the high degree of tradition-led handcraftsmanship and the rigorous pursuit of optimal solutions. That passion is also the CGM hallmark of our shared product.”

A record breaking Ferrari 250 GTO The American Bloomberg agency announced that one Ferrari 250 GTO went for no less than 52 million US Dollars, which is a record for a car. Even more impressive is the 49% increase compared to the sale of another of the 39 GTOs produced in Maranello and sold last year. “This model is considered as the most desirable to own,” commented Don Williams, the owner of one of the most important concessionaires of classic cars in California, ”when talking to Bloomberg. “It’s like the Mona Lisa in that it has a special mystique. If one owns a GTO then one has an amazing collection.” There are other multi-million offers for the other GTOs in circulation, but as usual, no one is prepared to talk about it. However, it’s not by chance that the rating given Ferrari by the HAGI (Historic Automobile Group International) an association of eminent experts in this area, which has produced some financial figures that show an increase in the market value of these classic cars, that has grown by 54.2% in 2013. “Nothing else haws grown at this rate,” commented the founder of HAGI, Dietrich Hatlapa, adding that the value of the rarest Ferraris has increased by 15% per year over the last thirty years.

Four new openings across three continents for Lamborghini Automobili Lamborghini continues with the expansion of its sales network, inaugurating four new dealerships in three continents over the last few days: In Europe in Pangbourne (Great Britain); in Asia in New Delhi (India) and Aoyama (Japan); and in North America in Vancouver (Canada). In Europe the showroom in Pangbourne, Berkshire, represents Lamborghini’s sixth sales outlet in the United Kingdom, the company’s number one market in Europe and fourth overall after the United States, China, and the Middle East. The New Delhi dealership joins India’s Mumbai showroom inaugurated last year. This opening reinforces Lamborghini’s existing presence in the Indian capital and the north of the country, which has the highest concentration of super sports car owners. Lamborghini Aoyama becomes the fifth Lamborghini dealership in Japan, the second most important market in the Asia-Pacific region after China, and fifth overall after Great Britain. Lamborghini Vancouver opens following significant renovations and the inauguration of a new showroom, joining the other two Canadian dealerships in Toronto and Montreal in a market that is highly strategic for the Sant’Agata Bolognese company.

Camaro Z/28 pushed to the limit at Nürburgring The 2014 Camaro Z/28 lapped Germany’s challenging Nürburgring road course in 7:37.40, a time comparable with some of the world’s most prestigious sports cars. The Z/28’s lap is four seconds faster than the Camaro ZL1, and beats published times for the Porsche 911 Carrera S and the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640. The lap was completed on less-than-ideal conditions, with damp pavement and pouring rain near the end of the run. “One of the challenges of testing at the ‘Ring is that the track is so long that conditions can change radically in a single lap,” said Al Oppenheiser,

Approximately 300 people attended the grand opening of FIAT of San Francisco, the first FIAT studio located in The City by the Bay. Treated with some of the best Italian wines, food and espressos, visitors had a chance to explore the all-new four-door Fiat 500L, the high-performance Fiat 500 Abarth, the fully-electric Fiat 500e and the classic Fiat 500. Different personalities, including Mr. Mauro Battocchi, Consul of Italy in San Francisco, attended the grandopening. California accounts for more than 20 percent of FIAT brand sales, and there are now six FIAT studios in the Bay Area. FIAT of San Francisco is the first to open for business within the city itself. The studio is located at 1595 Van Ness Ave. on the edge of San Francisco’s famed Pacific Heights neighborhood. With FIAT of San Francisco now open, the FIAT brand now has 210 studios in the United States. The FIAT brand launched the Fiat 500 in the U.S. in early 2011 and began selling the larger Fiat 500L in June and the all-electric Fiat 500e in the state of California in July. CGM

NEW INSIGNIA

“Our

flagship is now more sophisticated and eyecatching - says Opel CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann - but even in midst of all this elegance, don’t forget what it’s all about: to offer drivers and passengers a comfortable and safe driving experience with state-of-the-art technologies at a very attractive price”. New powerful and ultra-efficient direct injection engines like the two turbo gasoline units and the new 99 g CO2 turbo diesel expand the wide portfolio of the new Opel Insignia. This low emissions level puts the new 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine in the A+ efficiency class. In four and five-door models with a six-speed manual gearbox and Start/Stop, both output variants (88 kW/120 hp and 103 kW/140 hp) consume just 3.7 liters of fuel per 100 km over the combined cycle (according to Regulation [EC] No 715/2007), while the Sports Tourer achieves 3.9 l/100 km. At the same time, engineers have made the new Insignia’s body even more aerodynamic. With a drag coefficient of just below 0.25, the Insignia is now one of the most streamlined five-door hatchback in the world.

A host of chassis enhancements ensures higher agility and comfort. And a completely new infotainment system generation is now available for the Insignia. It integrates many smartphone functions into the car. The driver can choose between four different operating possibilities: touchscreen, steering wheel buttons, voice control and the brand new touchpad. Adventure-loving: Insignia Country Tourer

While

its Sports Tourer sibling is an elegant family and business station wagon, the new Insignia Country Tourer expresses an innate desire for adventure. The athletic all-rounder provides freedom beyond the constraints of city limits and asphalt roads. Defining features include protective under-body elements front and rear, combined with prominent wheel-arch and lower body cladding, all complemented by dual exhaust tailpipes. State-of-the-art all-wheel drive ensures grip and sure-footed handling in all driving conditions. It is teamed with powerful turbo engines such as a 184 kW/250 hp, 2.0-liter SIDI direct injection gasoline unit or a high-performance 2.0 BiTurbo CDTI – both generating impressive maximum torque of 400 Nm. The electronically controlled 4x4 drivetrain incorporates a high-quality clutch, operating on Haldex principles, and an electronic limited-slip differential to ensure superb traction on both paved and unpaved surfaces. It constantly adapts to prevailing road conditions and varies torque distribution seamlessly from zero to 100 percent between the front and rear axles, as well as between the rear wheels. In combination with the electronically controlled FlexRide premium chassis, the all-wheel drive system sets standards in terms of reaction time and vehicle control.

239 kW/325 hp and 435 Nm maximum torque, the Insignia OPC is the ultimate top-of-the-line performer among Opel models. The re-styled front and rear, with signature OPC design elements such as distinctive saber-tooth detailing at the front and the tailpipe integrated in the rear, underline its power. The eye-catching bodywork encapsulates state-of-the-art technology. The OPC chassis is enhanced, with special focus on the reworked rear axle – as in the other members of the new Insignia family – where engineers have modified around 60 percent of the componentry. New ESP software enables even more precise dynamics tuning, especially in reaction to understeer tendencies. Modified damper software for the FlexRide chassis with its adjustable shock absorbers ensures optimum roadholding. The Insignia OPC sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 6.0 seconds (Sports Tourer: 6.3 seconds) and reaches a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited). In unrestricted specification, the OPC with manual transmission goes on to a maximum speed of 270 km/h (Sports Tourer: 265 km/h). The cabin welcomes OPC drivers with pure motorsport ambience. The new performance steering wheel (optionally heated) features shift levers when it is combined with automatic transmission. This enables the OPC driver to execute extremely quick manual shifts, even when in automatic mode. In this way the new Insignia OPC comfortably combines the advantages of a manual and automatic operation.

and thus intuitive operation, customization of the infotainment offer, and of course comfort and safety for driver and passengers, which is even higher thanks to lowest-possible distraction from road traffic. The center console has a completely new feeling of subtlety and refinement as the control panel was drastically simplified. It now has just a few buttons so that operation of the infotainment system and e.g. air conditioning is fast and intuitive. The new infotainment generation in the Insignia can be controlled over an 8-inch color touchscreen. From the starting screen the driver can access all main functions and sub-menus such as radio stations, song titles, smartphone connection or 3D navigation map via fingertip, steering wheel controls, voice control or the revolutionary touchpad, which even supports handwriting recognition. And the infotainment system can be individualized – up to 60 personal favorites (e.g. playlists, phone contacts, navigation addresses) can be stored. Intensifying the man-and-machine information exchange is the newly designed instrument panel with an up to 8-inch high-resolution color display. In addition to the classic

readouts like speed, rpm and fuel tank level, further details on navigation, smartphone use and audio options are directly in the driver’s line of sight. New-generation 99 gram CO2 turbo diesel and SIDI turbo gasoline unit The new Opel Insignia also makes a statement in terms of powertrain and chassis. While the mid-size model already received many accolades for driving comfort, handling and roadholding, the new edition plays in an even higher league. Opel engineers have made a host of chassis improvements, including dampers, roll-bars and steering, which result in improved noise and vibration behavior and even higher levels of comfort. The broad, newly expanded engine portfolio is tuned to performance and comfort without any compromises. The new Opel Insignia offers the choice between the three propulsion alternatives gasoline, diesel and LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas); power output ranges from 81 kW/110 hp to 239 kW/325 hp. The Insignia 2.0 CDTI model is the ‘eco’ and fuel-saving champion. The new 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine with 88 kW/120 hp or 103 kW/140 hp enables CO2 emissions as low as 99 g/km (Sports Tourer: 104 g/km CO2) according to Regulation (EC) No 715/2007,

placing it in the A+ efficiency class. Four and five-door models with a six-speed manual gearbox and Start/Stop consume just 3.7 liters of fuel per 100 km over the combined cycle (Sports Tourer: 3.9 l/100 km). Both variants also boast superb torque, with the 88 kW/120 hp turbo diesel providing up to 320 Nm and the 103 kW/140 hp model even up to 370 Nm – thanks to an automatic overboost function which kicks in at full load. The top-of-the-line diesel is the 143 kW/195 hp 2.0 BiTurbo CDTI. This high-performance diesel engine develops impressive torque of 400 Nm and is distinguished by its direct responsiveness, as well as exemplary pulling power across a broad rpm range thanks to its sequential, two stage turbochargers. The most prominent gasoline engines are the two new direct injection units: the 2.0 SIDI turbo (SIDI = Spark Ignition Direct Injection) with 184 kW/250 hp and 400 Nm maximum torque and the all-new generation 1.6 SIDI turbo with 125 kW/170 hp and 260 Nm and even up to 280 Nm with overboost. They can be coupled with a six-speed manual transmission and Start/Stop or with a new, low-friction six-speed automatic gearbox. In addition to front-wheel-drive, the 2.0-liter SIDI Turbo is in some markets also available with all-wheel-drive.

(

(

NEW INSIGNIA

The entry-level gasoline engine at market launch is a frugal and extremely clean (Euro 6) 1.4 turbo with a six-speed manual gearbox and Start/Stop. It delivers 103 kW/140 hp and 200 Nm of torque (220 Nm with overboost), but needs only 5.2 liters of fuel per 100 km and emits 123 g/km CO2 (Sports Tourer 5.6 l/100 km and 131 g/km CO2 according to Regulation [EC] No 715/2007) – that means Best-in-Class Economy. An alternative, extremely economical powertrain option is the 103 kW/140 hp Insignia 1.4 LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas), with maximum torque of 200 Nm. Like the gasoline version, it meets stringent future Euro 6 emissions standards. Exemplary fuel consumption is also a result of the new Insignia’s aerodynamically optimized body design, incorporating many measures that lower its drag coefficient. An ultramodern feature is the active front air shutter for the diesel models with 88 kW/120 hp, 103 kW/140 hp and 120 kW/163 hp. This shutter in the lower front grille automatically closes to prevent air entering and causing turbulence. Taking all improvements into account, Opel engineers have succeeded in giving the new Insignia exceptionally low Cd values of just below 0.25 and 0.28 respectively for the Insignia hatchback and Sports Tourer.

A style of its own: Award-winning Opel design language with premium flair The new Insignia evolves the Opel design philosophy “sculptural artistry meets German precision” in the mid-size segment. The design theme articulates premium aspiration and dynamics with an unmistakable lowand-wide front graphic to visually pronounce its wide stance. The side view of the new Insignia hatchback and notchback are clearly more differentiated than before through their unique tailgates and integrated spoiler design. The roofline of the five-door model only fades out when it reaches the spoiler trailing edge to emphasize a classic coupé silhouette. On the fourdoor variant, it continues along the edge of the spoiler, creating an elegant sedan profile. This is also echoed in the rear, where the new Insignia features a wider and lower proportioned rear end design. The high-gloss chrome brand bar has been positioned lower on the tailgate and holds the brand logo. It extends into the tail lamps to include the slim-look reverse functions. The tail / stop functions of the split 2-piece tail lamps are executed as LEDs on all levels for hatchback and notchback. Characteristic for all body versions is the light design as a sharp “wing” signature.

Inseparable: Comfort and safety go hand-in-hand The new Opel Insignia also offers a host of technology, safety and comfort highlights. These include state-of-the-art radar and camera-based assistance systems ranging from Adaptive Cruise Control to Side Blind Spot Alert and Forward Collision Alert. Adaptive Cruise Control maintains the speed selected by the driver while keeping the individually pre-selected safety distance to the vehicle ahead. In vehicles with automatic transmission the system brakes the car to a complete stop when necessary. The rear view camera including Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Change Alert and Side Blind Zone Alert ensures optimum visibility to the sides and rear. With its various functions such as town/ pedestrian light, country light, motorway light as well as dynamic and static bend lighting, Adaptive Forward Lighting AFL+ increases safety, especially when visibility is poor or it is dark. The new Opel Insignia offers passengers best-possible protection with standard ESPPlus, ABS with Cornering Stability Control and Brake Assist, passive safety features such as front and side airbags for driver and front passenger as well as head curtain airbags front and rear. This is also confirmed by the exemplary Euro NCAP crash test results, awarding the Insignia five of five possible stars.

The 2013 is the 35th Stock Car Brasil season. It began on March 3 at the Interlagos and will end on December 15 at the same circuit, after twelve rounds. Peugeot and Chevrolet are involved as manufacturers while the tyres are supplied by Pirelli. Able to show a 34 cars starting grid and many fast and famous drivers (as the former Formula 1 guys Rubens Barrichello, Luciano Burti and Ricardo Zonta) the Brazilian Stock Car is definitely the best and more successful car racing series in South America, able to compete with the Australian V8 and the Japanese SuperGT in terms of audience and popularity.

MORBIDELLI TRIUMPH IN 2013 SUPERSTARS

Thanks

to a podium finish in Race 1 in Vallelunga (13 October) Gianni Morbidelli cruised to his 5th SUPERSTARS title in front of 26.000 cheering fans. Morbidelli was finally able to write his name in the International roll of honour again after his 2009 win, while he also has three Italian titles in his resume. So as soon as the series approached Vallelunga, he completed a successful stint started at Zolder, a sensational run that brought him and his Audi RS5 to seven wins including two full weekend sweeps.Â

Historical victory for Rahel Frey

Historical victory for Rahel Frey “We were off to a difficult star - says the former Formula 1 driver - Brno and Slovakia Ring we ended up with two retirements and that enabled my rivals at Mercedes to score lots of points and gain a considerable margin. Definitely it’s been the toughest moment for our team, but we kept each other motivated also thanks to the car’s potential. So we eventually scored several straight wins and lined-up at Imola tied with Thomas Biagi at the top of the standings. We had one of the most spectacular duels of the season there and I managed to get the nod. Coming to the last round of the season with a 33-point advantage played in my favour, and I had the chance to administrate it with a third-place finish in Race 1. That eventually handed me the championship with one race to go” How did it feel like? “It’s been very exciting to celebrate such a major accomplishment like winning the International Series in front of so many people. I absolutely want to point out that this result has come thanks to the team’s support. Everything worked perfectly also thanks to the friendship that keeps us together. In the end, that turned out to be a game changer”. Two weeks after capturing the International Series at Vallelunga, the Audi-powered racer dominated the field to replicate the same result in the Italian SUPERSTARS Championship at Franciacorta. On the twisty northern Italian track, located near Brescia, Morbidelli set the pace throughout the whole weekend, winning both races in front the large crowd that welcomed Teams and Drivers in the paddock.

At

the penultimate race of the Audi R8 LMS Cup in China, Audi factory driver Rahel Frey became the first lady to win a race and stake her claim in all-time winners list of the popular onemake series. The former DTM driver triumphed in the tenth race at Shanghai by 1.144 seconds from championship leader Alex Yoong. Alex Yoong extended his lead in the standings to 24 points after winning the first race ahead of his arch title rival Adderly Fong and Cong Fu Cheng and also be taking second place in the second race ahead of Marchy Lee and Fong. The title battle will be decided at the eleventh and final race at Macau on November 10.

A GREAT A GREAT MARKETING TOOL MARKETING TOOL

LADA Sport LUKOIL team completed several testing sessions during the month of October trying new technical features of the car ahead of the new regulations set for 2014. Technical regulations of 2014 FIA WTCC will require participating cars to have more power, less weight, reduced clearance and bigger wheels. At the same time, new rules give more freedom to make changes to the car in particular on the suspensions side. But if the team continues to test new solutions the AUTOVAZ LADA Management is planning all the marketing aspects on this exciting racing adventure. Artyom Fedosov, AVTOVAZ LADA Vice-President - Sales&Marketing, has very interesting things to tell us about this relevant effort

“First

“We are already working on new cars for 2014, and I am sure they will be really competitive, taking into account all the experience we gained this year. We will fight for victories”.

of all I would like to tell why AVTOVAZ made a decision to focus specifically on touring races (local and foreign) - says Artyom Fedosov, AVTOVAZ LADA Vice-President, Sales&Marketing the maximum resemblance between touring cars and mass-market vehicles is a crucial point for the manufacturer. It is very important when it comes to the way the audience perceives it. The link between cool racing cars and the road cars means much for potential customers. From this point of view, the 2013 season was very important and WTCC races were held worldwide, in countries of Europe, North Africa, South America and Asia. These markets are interesting for AVTOVAZ in terms of the perspective export strategy, and the level of brand recognition for LADA grew higher during this year, no doubts about it! We saw many local fans at each round: they were interested in LADA, our models, future production plans, and prices for cars. Broadcasting on Eurosport and global media coverage also contributed much to LADA brand. TV audience of more than 512 mln viewers is one of the key advantages of WTCC. The fact that LADA car is fighting in TOP-10 and even in TOP-5 (as we saw at the Moscow round) with BMW, Seat, Chevrolet, and Honda makes people talk about us in a positive way. Initial interest and brand recognition are only a first stage. The task is to convert these things into future sales. Now we are preparing the ground. When we come to these markets with new modern cars based on new platform, the customers will be already aware of all strengths of the LADA brand. Therefore, as you see, being in WTCC is a part of LADA overall marketing strategy. Successful performance on the racetracks increases the brand loyalty”.

(

A GREAT MARKETING TOOL

(

ADVERTORIAL

Are you considering the participating in WTCC only as a way to boost future export sales, or this project is important for LADA position at the local market as well? “Of course, importance for local market is obvious. Moreover, the local customers have already benefited from LADA WTCC program and I will explain why. In parallel with the start of WTCC 2013 season, we launched in April the production of the road versions of LADA Granta Sport cars. As I said earlier, the link between racing cars and the road cars means much for potential customers. LADA Granta Sport is a product for motorsport fans. LADA Sport division in Togliatti (LADA Homeland) produces these cars. They are fitted with a 120bhp 1.6-litre engine, specially designed suspension; 16” alloy wheels, and bigger brake disks. Each young active driver can associate himself to some extent with a racing driver. For the time being, the demand for these cars in Russia exceeds

supply, partly because of LADA Granta participation in the World Touring Car Championship. This shows the real interest in such cars, affordable, but with a sports character. In the future, we plan to export these cars after we are through with all necessary certification procedures”. LADA pulled out of WTCC at the end of 2009. What were the reasons behind that? “Yes, LADA WTCC program started in 2009, but was cancelled after one season due to hard economic situation at AVTOVAZ caused by the global financial crisis. The priority was to save the company, keep the production process underway, pay wages, meet obligations to banks and suppliers. Thanks to the competent crisis management policy and cooperation with Renault-Nissan Alliance, AVTOVAZ was able to overcome the crisis stage and stabilize its financial position.

Today AVTOVAZ is implementing the longterm development program, renewing its model line-up and modernizing the production processes”. How important was the Russian round of WTCC? It was the first time the Championship came to Russia. “I visited Moscow round and I really liked the whole atmosphere. Actually, the Russian round in WTCC calendar is extremely important. The most LADA Sport Lukoil team members are Russian. We are the Russian team and LADA positions itself as a Russian national brand. For us it was one of the best rounds in the season as James Thompson was 5th in the Race 1. You could just see the headings after that in all media – “LADA Granta in TOP-5” – that is the best advertisement, if we look at it from the marketing point of view. We also used this round to present road versions of LADA Granta Sport, and many peo-

ple, who came to the racetrack, had a chance to see this car”. To sum up the marketing benefits from WTCC-2013 for LADA, what would you say? “The growth of brand recognition and brand loyalty on a global scale and locally here in Russia; the successful launch of LADA Granta Sport production and thus providing LADA with a new segment of customers; the accumulation of technical experience and engineering solutions always valuable for the manufacturer in view of growing competence on the car market”.

Several

million Chinese followed the week-long marathon drive of around 30 classic cars from Beijing to Shanghai with unbridled enthusiasm. Volkswagen Classic sent two classic cars clear across the Middle Kingdom. The vehicles from the factory collection were driven by Jochem Heizmann (member of the Board of Volkswagen AG as well as President and CEO of Volkswagen Group China) and motor racing legend Jacky Ickx. Over 1,600 kilometres clear through China – a true adventure for over 30 auto classics that took part in the Classic Cars Challenge China (“4C”). After the start on 12 October in the capital city Beijing, the first stage led to Tianjin, one of the most important seaports in the People’s Republic. Over Qingdao, the drive continued southwards along the Yellow Sea. Prior to the final stage, the cars passed the old capital city of Nanjing before reaching the final destination in the booming economic metropolis of Shanghai on 18 October. The participants in the “4C” rally were definitely enthusiastic about the public reaction. Racing legend Jacky Ickx was ecstatic about the country and its people upon his arrival at the final destination on the shores of the Yellow Sea: “It’s a fabulous adventure to get to experience a classic car like the Beetle and to be in close contact with such a wonderful country like China at the same time. This is the kind of experience I wish everybody could have.”

China has now become the second home market for Volkswagen Group: after 2.8 million vehicles in 2012, Volkswagen Group, teaming up with its two joint ventures Shanghai Volkswagen (SVW) and FAW Volkswagen, delivered around 2.1 million vehicles to customers in China (including Hong Kong) in the first eight months of this year. The

«Global Challenges» are a series of technological challenges held all over the world whose aim is to establish the efficiency of electric propulsion under all the conditions with which it is confronted. The reliability, energy efficiency and robustness of this sustainable means of transport are revealed in solutions proposed by VENTURI in extraordinary situations. The results obtained enable the company to ensure the on-going progress of its technology for standard professional use (fleets of vehicles) and that of the general public (leisure activities, everyday transportation). A dual approach to the task has been adopted: 1) implementation of unprecedented solutions applied to unique operational circumstances; 2) confrontation of standard resources with conditions of use going beyond that for which the vehicle was designed. Four missions have been undertaken since 2010 and with the achievement of these various goals, Venturi has chalked up several records and world premières: • World Speed Record for electrical vehicle, established in 2010 (Venturi team lost the opportunity to increase the record last August due to the bad weather conditions on the Bonneville Salt Lake. The attempt has been post-poned to September 2014) • From Shanghai to Paris • Mission Africa, from Nairobi to Johannesburg • Antarctica

ANTARCTICA

(

The Antarctica program was initiated by Prince Albert II of Monaco and is supported by his Foundation. It runs for a period of three years and works with logistics specialists and researchers who are veterans of Antarctic campaigns.

The Antarctica project won the support of Prince Albert II of Monaco following his 3-week expedition to the Antarctic in January, 2009. The challenge for Venturi is to place at the disposal of the scientific community a clean, sustainable means of transport which has absolutely no negative impact on the environment. Scientific research in the Antarctic is of major importance, particularly for our understanding of factors linked to climate change. It requires a significant level of human activity. For several decades, the infrastructures designed have tried to reduce their impact on this unique and fragile environment, protected by strict regulations. Current means of transport mainly run on diesel. They are the main source of pollution. Yet research areas are often sites of sanctuary. These particular zones are the subject of study conditions required to comply with draconian measures to combat contamination by any kind of pollution. The 3-year Antarctica project is being developed in collaboration with logistics experts and “veteran researchers who have worked on campaigns in the Antarctic. The vehicle will first be tested in a cold region in Europe before being sent to the Antarctic (2015). At the current stage of development, it is expected that the Antarctica will carry 4 passengers, baggage and equipment on the roof rack. It should have a range of around 40 kilometres at a speed of 25 km/ hr. It will be a tracked vehicle mounted on tyres offering power of 2X50kW for a weight of over one ton.

«More than just an electric Ratrack – says the Venturi designer Sacha Lakic – Antarctica is a representation of a robot car of the future. A clean and intelligent robot designed for intensive use under the extreme weather conditions of Antarctic. Surprisingly, Antarctica will be the first nonpolluting vehicle to circulate in this natural reserve, land of peace and science. Antarctica is of historical importance from an environmental and technical point of view. Venturi is the first car manufacturer to take up such a challenge.» The vehicle will first be tested in a cold part of Europe before being sent to the Antarctic during the austral summer of 2015. Venturi is already planning a commercial version of the ANTARCTICA.

Volvo Cars launches the Pure Tension pavilion

Volvo

Cars introduces the Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid in Italy – and launches the car together with the “Pure Tension pavilion”. The pavilion – a spectacular free-standing tensioned membrane structure – is a rapidly deployable and portable solar charging station for the world-first Diesel Plug-in Hybrid. “Pure Tension pavilion” is the winning project resulting from a competition for architects and designers held in May and commissioned by Volvo Car Italia. The Pure Tension charging station together with the V60 Plug-in Hybrid will now be part of a road-show through Italy’s biggest cities. The “Pure Tension pavilion” was shown for the first time at an event in Milan to mark the official launch of the Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid in Italy. This May Volvo Car Italia in collaboration with the magazine for Architecture and Technologies “The Plan” organized a competition for architects and designers to create a pavilion for the Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid. The contest received over

150 entries from all over the world. The winning structure was created by Alvin Huang’s Synthesis Design + Architecture (SDA), with offices in Los Angeles and London. Following SDA’s competition win, the project entered the production phase during the summer. The structure took shape between July and September in Chicago under the care of Fabric Images, a company specialized in this type of design creation. Its final assembly and first functional testing took place in October in Bologna, close to the head offices of Volvo Car Italia. With its strong visual impact, the “Pure Tension pavilion” conveys a complete sense of absolute mobility, demonstrating flexibility and efficiency through Volvo Cars’ hybrid technology. The pavilion is a flexible mesh structure held in place by carbon fibre rods and is embedded with photovoltaic cells so that it can absorb energy from the sun or indoor lighting. The car will ‘plug’ directly into the pavilion’s skin, charging its battery with the energy collected over the day.

AA study of cordless chargingcharging study of cordless

Volvo

Car Group has been a partner in an advanced research project that has studied the possibilities of inductive charging for electric vehicles – and the results show that this technology for transferring energy via an electromagnetic field has a promising future. “Inductive charging has great potential. Cordless technology is a comfortable and effective way to conveniently transfer energy. The study also indicates that it is safe - says Lennart Stegland, Vice President, Volvo Electric Propulsion System - there is not yet any common standard for inductive charging. We will continue our research and evaluate the feasibility of the technology in our hybrid and electric car projects.”

this is one of the factors that can increase the customer’s acceptance of electrified vehicles” says Lennart Stegland. The completed research project, which included inductive charging for cars and buses, was initiated by Flanders’ Drive, the knowledge centre of the automotive industry in the Flanders region in Belgium. It featured a consortium of companies, including Volvo Car Group, Bombardier Transportation and the coachbuilder Van Hool.

Inductive charging uses an electromagnetic field instead of a cord to transfer energy between two objects. An induction coil creates an alternating electromagnetic field from a charging base station. A second induction coil in the portable device picks up power from the electromagnetic field and converts it back into an electrical energy that charges the battery. This technology is common in electrical home appliances such as electrical toothbrushes but is not yet commercially available to charge electric cars. “With inductive charging, you simply position the car over a charging device and charging starts automatically. We believe that

Given its highly innovative nature, Pure Tension has directed significant interest towards the Volvo Car Group, and more precisely to the Volvo Monitoring & Concept Center (VMCC). Based in Camarillo, California, the center assesses all elements of Pure Tension’s future potential (including the cars, infrastructure and technological prerequisites that it would need to function in). Michele Crisci, President of Volvo Car Italia, eloquently summarises: “We have rewarded an idea that is fantastic, simple and at the same time highly sophisticated from a creative point of view. I expected a project that was

able to convey what is fundamentally Volvo Cars, which in addition to safety, means quality, environmental sustainability, functionality and making technology available to everyone. In this, we have it all. And to see it brought to reality increases the buzz that the initial idea generated even further.” The Volvo “Pure Tension pavilion” is an experimental creation and demonstrates possible future methods to provide sustainable power to electric cars. The “Pure Tension pavilion” is not planned to be put into production in the near future. CGM

Daimler reports another improved quarter

Chrysler third quarter results

In the third quarter of 2013, Daimler AG once again achieved significantly higher earnings than in the prior-year period. The Daimler Group’s EBIT for the period of July through September amounted to €2,231 million (Q3 2012: 1,923 million). Net profit reached €1,897 million (Q3 2012: €1,238 million). Earnings per share were €1.72 (Q3 2012: €1.06). “Our earnings continued improving in the third quarter, compared with the year to date and compared with the prior-year period.
