500 Coupe’ & Spider

TO BE OR NOT TO BE?

David Obendorfer is a young designer that has recently published some interesting works on this wonderful 500 coupÊ and spider. Far to be an official FIAT project the Obendorfer studies seem able to excite our fantasy. As already done in the past, CARS GLOBALMAG gladly gives space to the creativity ‌ waiting for a reaction from the major cars manufacturers management.

500 COUPE’ & SPIDER

( By David Obendorfer

With

the creation of 500L and with its new versions that followed, Fiat has accomplished the first steps to transform the 500 in a kind of sub-brand with diversified products. The 500L was born with the clear objective to propose a fairly spacious and versatile vehicle with a good level of practicity, while being friendly and fashionable just like the normal 500. The stylistic exercise of my 500 Spider and Coupé on the contrary, looks for the possibility of inserting in the 500 selection a compact and light model, yet with a sporty character similar to Alfa MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde. I have developed the 3D model of a just 4-meter-long small coupé, parallelly developing the spider version. The project foresees the use of the group’s modular B-wide platform (the same one of the 500L) with shortened wheelbase, sharing the front-wheel-drive disposition and a series of components with Punto and Alfa MiTo. Stylistically, the project re-suggests some characteristic elements of the 500, while trying to make the spirit of the compact sports car reborn, in which the Italian automotive industry is so rich. The ribbing of the sides, for instance, somehow recall those of the Fiat Barchetta, while the double hood bubble is an homage to the 124 Sport Spider.

( The roadster represents a category whose roots reach deeply into the Italian automotive history. Those most successful ones are seen also today as beautiful vehicles. As a result, the new models of this type might give one the impression of having less balanced proportions due to the restrictions imposed by the platform, which is often shared with other “common” models. In a nutshell, the architecture of front-wheel cars predetermines, as it were, a quite advanced windshield position which doesn’t allow the construction of a sufficiently long bonnet line which would bestow dynamism on the chassis. What’s more, the stylistic criteria of sports cars in general, tend to change a lot slower than other types. So, our eyes somehow prefer a more classic arrangement of proportions. That’s the reason why the BMW Z4 or the Mazda MX5 are regarded as real spider while la MINI Roadster and the Audi TT Roadster are a little less so. All things considered, I have chosen to develop a totally new chassis characterized by different proportions to the 500, by using the platform of Fiat/Alfa models of segment B. This project, however, rather than being a simple up-to-date reinterpretation as it has no concrete progenitor, it focuses our eyes on a series of beautiful old two-seaters, such as the 850 Spider, the 124 Sport Spider and the 1994 Fiat Barchetta.

HYUNDAI Veloster Turbo R-Spec 2014 Elantra GT

Hyundai presented the addition of the Veloster Turbo R-Spec to its line-up at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The heart of the R-Spec is the responsive, aftermarket-tunable 1.6-liter, direct-injected, turbocharged engine, along with unique design cues, enhanced chassis tuning, a B&M Racing Sport Shifter, and the lowest price point in the Veloster Turbo lineup. R-Spec production will begin in December 2013 with availability in early February 2014. Hyundai upped both the horsepower and torque on the refreshed Elantra GT. The GT now includes a standard 2.0-liter Nu Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engine, which adds 25 more horsepower (+17 percent) and 23 lb.-ft. of torque (+18 percent) from the prior model year. This powertrain in the Elantra GT produces 173 horsepower available at 6,500 rpm and 154 lb.-ft. of torque on tap at 4,700 rpm. To sharpen the look of the 2014 Elantra GT, Hyundai engineers added LED taillights. To improve visibility a new integrated driver’s blind spot mirror was also added. The 2014 Elantra GT goes on sale in December.

ABARTH - 595 50th Anniversary Abarth is celebrating fifty years of the Abarth 595, a true icon of the brand which in the 1960s proved an immediate success thanks to its extraordinary performance. In order to pay it a fitting tribute, Abarth released the 595 ‘50th Anniversary’. When talking about his life, Carlo Abarth used to say that, “engines, cars, races, a passion for cars and a passion for speed is the disease, the beautiful disease that made us love what is always the fastest, always the pinna-

cle of mechanical perfection. ”Today these words are part of Abarth’s manifesto and demonstrate that the search for ‘performance’ is more than a passion: it’s a genuine lifestyle, or as the brand communication pay-off neatly sums up, ‘Performance is a state of mind’. In fifty years Abarth has been more than just a car manufacturer. It has been a business model which is unique in the international scenario, a virtuous circle in which commercial

activity supports commitment to competition and racing know-how fuels the technical development of road-going models. And when we talk about commercial activity, that doesn’t just mean sales of cars, but also the installation of kits, accessories, licensing, merchandising and sponsorship. Abarth has sold more than 60,000 units from 2007 to date, of which almost 95% road-going cars. Special Series have also always played an important role for Abarth, with almost 3,000 units sold to date, and the tuning kits, more than 16,000. Today the brand continues in its trajectory of growth above all beyond national boundari-

es, accounting for nearly 85% of total sales. In Europe, for example, interest in Abarth is healthy above all in countries where an “automotive culture” and passion for driving have the deepest roots, such as Italy (15%), the United Kingdom (10%) and Germany (9%). And that’s not all. At the global level, more than 1 Abarth in 10 reaches Asia, principally Japan, a market which saw growth of 129% last year. This sales performance was achieved in part thanks to a distribution network that is constantly growing, by opening to new markets.

The

2014 Cadillac ELR luxury coupe blends dramatic design and industry-leading extended-range technology to deliver a driving experience that is sporty and environmentally friendly. EREV technology provides full driving range exceeding 300 miles (480 km) via pure electric driving and rangeextending generator. The ELR represents the first application of Extended Range Electric Vehicle technology by a full-line luxury automotive brand. The ELR delivers on the promise of the Converj Concept on which it is based. The exterior establishes a new, progressive proportion for the brand while the interior introduces a new design theme that will define future Cadillac models, emphasizing modern elegance, technology and precisely crafted details.

Industry-leading Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) technology provides full driving range exceeding 300 miles (480 km), combining pure electric driving and an efficient, range-extending generator. ELR’s confident and responsive EREV driving technology is enhanced with exclusive Regen on Demand and selectable drive modes that enhance driving and make the most of efficiency. Regen on Demand allows the driver to temporarily regenerate energy from the ELR’s momentum into electricity that can be stored in the battery pack for later use. It is engaged via steeringwheel paddles adapted from traditional performance cars. The proven EREV technology is uniquely tuned for Cadillac in the ELR. Most daily commutes will require zero gasoline with zero emissions. Longer trips are free from electric-vehicle range anxiety because EREV technology enables the same long-distance freedom as a conventional car.

Exterior & interior design The Cadillac ELR has an aggressive, forwardleaning profile that introduces a new, progressive theme and proportion in Cadillac’s design evolution. It carries over almost unchanged from the 2009 Converj concept that inspired it. The overall shape is reinforced by a prominent, sweeping body line accented by 20-inch wheels pushed to the edges of the body. Vertical headlamp and taillamp elements create Cadillac’s signature for the ELR, day or night and from the front or rear – a brand tradition since 1948. Aerodynamics play a crucial role in the design as airflow is managed to help the vehi-

cle slip through the air with minimal drag. A flush front fascia and grille – with active shutters behind the grille opening – as well as tapered fascia corners, enable air to move easily around the car to reduce drag. Exterior colors include Black Raven, Radiant Silver Metallic, Graphite Metallic and Crystal Red. Luxury appointments, great proportions and a flowing and ergonomic cockpit incorporating the latest technology interface were top priorities for the ELR interior design team. A continuous feature line from the instrument panel through the doors to the back glass creates a complete and harmonious cockpit environment.

The face of CUE in the ELR is an eight-inch (203 mm) LCD touch screen integrated in the top of the central instrument panel. Its features include: U Proximity sensing: As the user’s hand approaches the LCD screen, command icons appear. Icons can be customized and arranged by consumers to improve ease of use U Haptic feedback: Buttons on the fully capacitive faceplate pulse when pressed to acknowledge the driver’s commands, helping the driver keep eyes on the road U Multi-touch hand gestures: Interactive motions (tap, flick, swipe and spread) popularized by smartphones and tablets allow easy scrolling of lists, zooming maps and searching favorites on the LCD screen. U Natural speech recognition: Enables consumers to use fewer specific commands to recall stored media or input navigation destinations. CUE’s text-to-speech feature also allows users to receive text messages by system voice and to send recorded text messages in return CUE’s LCD screen features the driver’s five most frequently used functions stored along the top of the screen. At the bottom of the screen, users can select up to 60 favorites – from music to points of interest, addresses, maps for weather or directions, phone numbers or system commands, such as “tag song.” Favorites can also be re-ordered and named to be easily recallable. The steering wheel includes a five-way controller to navigate the cluster display, volume control, cycle through favorites, voice recognition, phone hang-up and more.

Driving experience The Cadillac ELR’s dramatic design is matched with an engaging driving experience, supported by the EREV propulsion system calibrated for uncompromising performance. With 295 lb.-ft. of torque (400 Nm) – about 12 percent more than the 3.6L V-6 in the SRX – acceleration in the city and on the highway, including merging and passing, is achieved with reassuring power on demand. The ELR’s Sport driving mode also contributes to its responsive driving experience, automatically reconfiguring the accelerator pedal response to provide quicker torque application and more sensitive feedback to driver inputs through altered suspension and steering settings. Sport mode is one of four driver-selectable choices that help make the most of the ELR’s driving experience for a variety of driving styles and conditions. The others are: U Tour mode: The default setting on the ELR is expected to be used most often and provides the greatest driving comfort and efficiency. U Mountain mode: Mountain mode automatically adjusts the system to provide needed power in mountainous environments when vehicle performance could otherwise be compromised. Mountain mode allows ELR to sustain a sufficient state of charge so supplemental power is available from the battery if needed. U Hold mode: Hold mode allows owners to direct when the ELR uses its gas-powered electric generator, reserving the remaining battery charge for later use. This feature helps enhance efficiency because owners who mix city and highway driving can save the battery charge for city travel, where the ELR EV mode operates most efficiently.

(

2014 CADILLAC ELR

(

Driving confidence is further enhanced by advanced suspension and damping systems, including Continuous Damping Control – which adjusts damping every two milliseconds – to maintain optimal vehicle ride control over varying road surfaces and profiles. The ELR rolls on 20-inch wheels with specially engineered low-rolling-resistance tires designed to balance excellent control and cornering capability with efficiency. A solid, stable foundation underpins the ELR, featuring a body-frame-integral structure with main underbody rails running continuously from front to rear. Advanced, high-strength steels add strength and conserve weight. Additional contributors to the ELR’s driving experience include: U Wide front and rear tracks – 62.1 inches (1,578 mm) in front and 62.4 inches (1,585 mm) in the rear – along with a long wheelbase (106.1 inches / 2,695 mm) and a low center of gravity U HiPer Strut front suspension featuring lightweight forged aluminum components for reduced weight and more nimble, responsive action U Dual-pinion, rack-mounted electric power steering system with premium ZF steering gear designed to provide excellent feedback while helping to save fuel Because the ELR operates so quietly in all-electric mode, a driver-activated feature sounds a noise to alert pedestrians, particularly those with impaired vision, in an intersection.

Propulsion and charging technology The ELR is powered by GM EREV technology, combining pure electric drive and an efficient, range-extending 1.4L gasoline-powered electric generator capable of 154 kW (207 hp) of total system power. The ELR’s battery is a T-shaped, 16.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. It is located along the centerline of the vehicle, between the front and rear wheels for optimal weight distribution. The 5.5-footlong (1.6 m), 435-pound (198 kg) pack supplies energy to an advanced electric drive unit capable of 295 lb.-ft. of instant torque (400 Nm) to propel the vehicle. Using only the energy stored in the battery, the ELR will deliver a GM-estimated range of about 35 miles (56 km) of pure electric driving, depending on terrain, driving techniques and temperature. A driver-selectable Hold mode directs when the ELR uses its electric generator. This feature helps optimize the electric-driving experience, allowing owners who mix city and highway driving to save the battery charge for city travel, where the ELR EV mode operates most efficiently. Charging the ELR’s battery can be done with a 120V electrical outlet or a dedicated 240V charging station. The vehicle can be completely recharged in about 4.5 hours using a 240V charging station, depending on the outside temperature.

Mazda6’s character lines start at Mazda’s new family face – the signature wing grille and glinting “eyes” with their halo ring light and LEDs extending the wing outwards – and flow through the powerful shoulders and haunches supporting the rear-leaning cabin, and finally, the strong yet harmonious rear. Sedan or wagon, the new Mazda6 is the purest adaptation yet of the “KODO – Soul of Motion” design theme, which was inspired by the movements of animals in the wild and symbolises Mazda’s distinctive vitality and agility. A coupé-style cabin, with the A-pillars moved back 100 mm relative to the past model, emphasises the solid stance of a highly responsive vehicle (also giving the driver a wider field of view).

Headlamps incorporate LEDs and a new halo ring light*, a Mazda first highlighting the car’s mature, and confident stance, while linking the face to the side character lines and onwards to the signature tail lights. Four new body colours – Soul Red Metallic, Blue Reflex Mica, Meteor Grey Mica and Jet Black Mica – specially designed for greater contrast. The car is vailable with 17- and 19inch aluminium wheels. Look at the interior, where form meets function in a highly ergonomic cockpit built to make driving as enjoyably effortless as possible. Everything is exactly where it should be: even the repositioned A-pillars, moved rearwards relative to the current model, contribute to a stress-free experience by widening the driver’s field of view.

Passengers await a relaxing atmosphere in the cabin, which features sporty comfort and segment-leading dimensions accompanied by the latest infotainment technology, including 11-speaker BOSE® surround sound. High quality polished aluminium look for parts like the door handles and gearshift knob, with soft materials on items most often touched (e.g. steering wheel). Power is supplied by a 4.2 V8 engine borrowed from the Audi RS4, though the Renovatio is a much lighter car, weighing in at 1090 kg, as the weight ratio is 2.42 kg/413bhp/tonn. A flat torque curve provides 430Nm from 2,800 to 7,200 rpm with a maximum power of 450 bhp at 7,900 rpm. Top speed is 310 km/h and beyond, adjustable, depending on gearbox and final drive ratios; 0-100 km/h is reached in 3.7sec. and 0-200 km/h in 11,5 seconds ‌ but the high tech carbon ceramic brakes are able to stop the Renovatio T500 from 200 to 0 km/h in just 4,2 seconds.

Another

incredible NASCAR season has come to a close after the last race of the Chase at Homestead - Miami Speedway. Danny Hamlin managed to hold off championship contender Matt Kenseth to win the the Ford EcoBoost 400 under the lights, while Jimmie Johnson finished in ninth position, thus securing his sixth NASCAR Sprint Cup title. The championship is a record-extending 11th in the series for Hendrick Motorsports. Jimmie Johnson, who was already a part of history having won five consecutive championships (from 2006 to 2010), is now a step closer of becoming the greatest stock car

driver of all time. The 38-year-old is one of only three competitors to win six or more NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championships. He trails only seven-time champions and NASCAR Hall of Fame members Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt ... and by the way he makes it look that easy, means that title number seven, and possibly eight, are just around the corner. On the car side we have to underline that the Gen-6 car, the sixth generation of NASCAR racing vehicle, made its debut this year at the Daytona 500. It has been a very positive debut year as both fans and drivers share their appreciation for what has been acheived. 83,1% of cars were running at the finish of races (up from 74,7% in 2012), 17 different

drivers won a race this season (up from 15 last season) and 19 times qualifying records were broken. These are just some of the accomplishments of the Gen-6 car, making the NASCAR show even more spectacular. Clint Bowyer (Toyota driver) on the Gen-6 car: “Look at these highlights. Isn’t this awesome! I love this sport. I’m telling you. Whoever designed this new car, we should kiss ‘em every weekend. It’s creating drama. We haven’t seen racing like this in years, since I first started in this sport (in 2004). When you can leave a race track and there’s people in tears because they won, and in tears because they got crashed, that’s what brings us to the race track, that kind of racing and determination and passion”.

MOLLY t s fa

e th

The most famous lady rally driver in activity in the world, Australian Molly Taylor, confirmed her liking for gravel rallies and, after winning the Ladies’ Trophy in the 2013 FIA European Rally Championship, performed a high quality race at the 2013 WRC Wales Rally, against the world’s strongest drivers participating in the Citroën Top Driver Trophy.

A

solid race in Wales, despite an accident which could have cost the Australian dearly, fortunately ended only with damage to the car, which returned to the service area a little “bruised”, this forced the talented team boys to extra work to allow the Citroën DS3 R3 to continue. In WRC Wales Rally Molly started with number 111, the triple 1 brought good luck as she finished 23rd overall after having been, before the accident, as high as 19th. “Proving to be competitive against the Citroën Top Driver Trophy crews was one of the goals of this race, the other was to be able to be in front of drivers with bigger cars than ours, I think I have achieved both of these goals even beyond the most optimistic expectations given the quality level of the entry list - said Molly the team has always been excellent, even when I brought a damaged car back into service, they always repaired it without a hitch, and I never had any penalty for late check-out, they are great boys”.

Molly, 2013 has been a special season, can You recall something from each rally? “It’s been a very different type of season from anything I’d known previously. A great experience and an insight into what it takes to move forward, from rallying for fun to try to turn it into a career. The whole year has been an incredible learning curve for me. Corsica was the 2013 highlight, my favourite event so far. Being second in 2WD and winning stages in our class was great as it was the first time we managed to do it”.

How important is it to build on experience rather than rewriting new pacenotes every time? Is your pacenote system still evolving? “After Ypres we changed our pacenote system quite dramatically. Seb and I started training on random roads previously unseen, as well as on events. It has been a challenge as we are only allowed two passes while developing a new system at the same time. For sure we notice an improvement in stage times when stages are repeated in the rally and know that we still have room to move in this area. This is what has been really good

about this year, developing this system on new rallies; we have a better understanding of how pacenotes relate to the speed”. Do you normally prefer gravel or tarmac, and do you have a favourite event based on what you’ve seen this year? “I’ve always preferred gravel, since pretty much all of my rallying back home has been on this surface, that’s where I learned how to rally and the feeling of pushing a car to its limits on gravel. We’ve had many tarmac events this season and it’s been good to

(

MOLLY THE FAST

( get some confidence on this surface, tarmac can be great fun if one has the right level of confidence especially on certain kinds of roads. It’s a different sensation and feelings, trying to find the limit is not so progressive as on gravel. My favourite event this year was Corsica, which is on tarmac, I’m slightly contradicting myself there but for me, having less experience on tarmac, I think that it’s on asphalt that it is possible to make more of a difference as it’s often an “all or nothing” situation. Gravel is a lot more progressive and all about the feeling so one can play around with the limit, with a little give and take either way; one can slide a little bit more, turn the car in and have more room for adjustment through each corner if conditions change

whereas tarmac is not so forgiving if you hit a slippery bit which you were not aware of. In this respect I find tarmac more specialized”. Molly, although you’ve praised your car’s reliability there have been times when you have had to perform work on the car. You and Seb must have learned a lot as you had to carry out repairs roadside. You also spend time with the team and at the workshop, learning more about the car and what to do to take care of it. “We’ve been bush mechanics, as they say. It’s important to know what it is possible to fix in between services with the tools and spares we have in the car; in Poland we were very lucky because due to the ruts and very rough surface we damaged and bent the rear beam in the car to the point where some bolts unwound loose: ultimately only one bolt was holding the rear beam into the chassis and we had to try to repair it. The socket that doesn’t fit, the angle you can’t quite get... we did our best to try and fix it and thankfully it only just got us through the last stage. Understanding of such things is vital, if we hadn’t tried to fix the car on the road section we wouldn’t have got to the end of the rally. Knowing the car is crucial, both in terms of on-event repairs in between stages but also when you want to set up the car. It’s important to know what you can change, what you are doing, what effect that will have on the car and why. I think that is really important so we do whatever we can and now that I have some time I plan to spend some more days in the workshop helping to prepare the car, for my own knowledge and benefit”. You said this season might possibly be the one where you learned the most in your career so far….

“This year has been different as a whole group of different stakeholders have come together to make this season happen. Working with United Business and a whole lot of sponsors, supporters and stakeholders coming from different areas is demanding; you are working as a team trying to put everything together. There are so many other things to think about: the performance inside the car is one thing but also all the other things which need to happen to make sure everyone gets their value from the year can help to make a career progress. From that point of view it has meant working with all the factors involved in the sport, not just driving”.

(

MOLLY THE FAST

(

How important is it to have somebody helping you out, such as a good team and a professional management company? “It has been critical for our progression to try being more professional in the sport, to have a proper management team. Thanks to United Business we’ve been able to get that step done, and we can now work towards the professional level. It’s a commercial sport, not just one person going out there but rather putting a plan together. We have to learn our place in that wheel and how to make the best of it. From my side, I’ve worked very hard back in Australia to bring my supporters and sponsors together and through United Business we’ve made that a plan for the European Championship”. What does it feel like to have won the first edition of the FIA ERC Ladies Trophy? How was your season, in terms of the relationship with your main opponents and what feedback are you getting from Australia? “Winning the championship was our goal coming into the season and we are really excited to have been able to achieve it. In some events we’ve had quite a lot of competition, which has been really good. With Ekaterina Stratieva we get on really well; many people were joking and trying to instigate some sort of girl catfight but it was really friendly and we very much enjoyed the competition. I’m quite surprised by the feedback from Australia, there’s been a good reaction. We get quite a lot of support in every rally we do but particularly after Croatia when we sealed the championship I was quite overwhelmed by the amount of congratulations and the involvement of local media. Many people told me they’d heard me on news announcements of radio stations, it was much more than I’d expected”. CGM

MAHINDRA RACING TO COMPETE FORMULA E

Mahindra

Racing, the motorsports division of the Mumbai-based multinational Mahindra Group, has recently signed an agreement to join the new FIA Formula E Championship. Already a major global force in the development and production of electric vehicles through its

Mahindra Reva Company, joining the new zero emission series was a natural step for the Mahindra Group. “We strongly believe that Formula E can provide an excellent global showcase for our electric vehicle technology - said Mr Anand Mahindra, Chairman and Managing Director of Mahindra Group - with advanced operations and expertise in electronics, IT, automotive technologies and manufacturing, we are already seeing the fusion of this technology into our electric vehicle operations. Racing will further accelerate that trend while Formula E is set to raise awareness globally about the benefits of electric vehicles.” Mr S P Shukla, Chairman, Mahindra Racing and President of Group Strategy said: “We are very excited about our new adventure with Formula E. Mahindra Racing is relatively young, but we have seen how racing delivers benefits to our organisation, not only from the brand perspective, but equally in terms of technology advances and motivation. This is an excellent addition to our racing portfolio and we are looking forward to a successful future in Formula E.”

SEAT TO LAUNCH LEON EUROCUP IN 2014

SEAT

is driving forward its rich motorsport heritage with the SEAT Leon Eurocup; once again providing fascinating customer sport action starting with the 2014 season. On six race weekends in six European countries ( the exact race calendar will be soon defined) and with attractive prize money. On the grid will be the SEAT Leon Cup Racer, a first-class motorsport machine with 330 PS / 243 kW and an extensive array of professional technology. Each weekend will run from Friday to Sunday and includes two free training sessions, qualification and two races. Winners can also look forward to attractive prize money. The SEAT Leon has already been one of the most successful race touring cars of recent years. In 2008 and 2009, it won the WTCC title for SEAT Sport, while the SEAT Leon Supercopa and Eurocup was one of motorsport’s most popular One Make Series. The Supercopa championships ran from 2003 until 2013 in a total of 8 countries and the Eurocup from 2008 to 2010 in a total of 9 countries. The new SEAT Leon Cup Racer cuts an impressive figure from the outset – its muscular stance

on its 18-inch wheels derived in part from a track that is almost 40 centimetres greater than on the series-production model. The new front end has been designed for optimum aerodynamic efficiency and maximum airflow to the engine and brakes. The substantial wheel arches, with their vents at the rear, enhance the cooling effect on the four-piston brake system. The powerfully flared sills work together with the front spoiler, smooth under body, rear diffuser and two-stage roof spoiler mounted on a single support to provide maximum down force for high cornering speeds. The Leon Cup Racer is driven by the mighty propulsion of a two-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged engine. Its maximum power output is 330 PS / 243 kW, while its maximum torque stands at 400 Newton metres. Power transmission to the front axle is courtesy of a 6-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox operated from the steering wheel, and an electronically controlled locking differential. A preliminary purchase price for the Leon Cup Racer has already been set at € 70,000 (excl. VAT). The first official orders for the Cup Racer can be accepted as of the end of November. CGM

KEY SEASON FOR AA KEY SEASON FOR THE RUSSIAN SQUAD THE RUSSIAN SQUAD

At the end of hard but positive season it is interesting to know what the “front men” of the LADA Sport LUKOIL team think about the past championship and the future new horizons.

VICTOR SHAPOVALOV

Team Principal The 2013 FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) was full of ups and downs for LADA Sport LUKOIL, but it’s important to remember that it was only the LADA Granta’s maiden year in the WTCC. As it was the team’s “rookie season, I can safely say it has been a successful year. LADA didn’t go unnoticed upon its return to the WTCC and, in most races, featured well within the top ten. Some circuits were more suitable for our car than others; for example Sonoma Raceway and the Slovakiaring gave us a bit of a headache. However, we gained a great deal of experience and learned a lot about the strengths of the car at various tracks, ultimately discovering that the LADA Granta is capable of being very competitive. As a result, the feedback on the car has been overwhelmingly positive and there has even been a lot of interest in the Granta among potential customer touring car teams. As for the future, most of the circuits the WTCC visited this year will remain on calendar in 2014. Therefore, we will go into next year better prepared and with more confidence than ever. Of course, we understand that our competitors will also progress and the fight will be even tougher next season, but LADA Sport LUKOIL relishes taking on new challenges and competition – that’s what motorsport is all about, after all!

A KEY SEASON FOR THE RUSSIAN SQUAD

JAMES THOMPSON

ADVERTORIAL

Driver On the whole, it’s been a very good season for the LADA Sport team. The initial objective was to compete somewhere in the midfield but, as the first half of the season came to a close, we were already breaking into the top ten places. Without doubt the best result was the fifth place I achieved in the first race in Moscow. It was imperative to put on a strong showing in Russia for the countless local fans, with LADA being the sole Russian WTCC team and a national institution. By the time the Asian rounds came along later in the year, the team was in very good shape; I notched up a sixth in Japan, eighth in China and even fought for a podium in Macau. However, what’s also very important is the shift in attitudes towards LADA and its ability to compete on the world stage in the WTCC from international society, media, and fans alike. LADA is no longer the butt of jokes as it once was when we only started the project. It has proven itself to be a professional and ambitious team that is capable of producing very competitive Russian-built race cars. I’m very proud to drive for LADA and to score the team’s first points in the WTCC and I’m determined to achieve LADA’s maiden podium finish too!

(

MIKHAIL KOZLOVSKIY

Driver The season as a whole was very positive for me. I learnt several new circuits that will feature on the 2014 WTCC calendar and feel a lot more confident now. It’s actually quite difficult to pinpoint a particularly memorable moment from the 2013 season, because each round of the championship was an intense struggle for me. However, there were some standout circuits. Sonoma Raceway was very interesting because the layout included a 50-metre elevation change, while fast circuits in Austria and Argentina were also special. My pace was very high so they inevitably made very positive impressions on me. Of course, the final round in Macau was one of the highlights of the season. The Circuito da Guia track is unlike any track I’ve ever raced on – it’s ultra-fast, dangerous and demands unwavering concentration, but is so rewarding when you’re fast around there. It goes without saying that the first Russian round of the WTCC in Moscow was something special. It was a great milestone in the history of Russian motorsport, but I really enjoyed driving the circuit and the support I received from the Russian fans meant a great deal to me. In fact, I’m already looking forward to the WTCC’s Race of Russia in 2014 and invite all motorsport fans to visit Moscow Raceway next June!

MARCO CALOVOLO

Racing Engineer Great progress has been made since LADA’s first appearance as a manufacturer team in the WTCC in 2009. I was delighted to re-join LADA in 2012 as the team began preparations for a full-time campaign in 2013. In 2012 we completed only two races with James (Thompson) at the wheel of the Granta and did our best to build a competitive car. Despite lack of testing, we managed to create a fast and reliable machine. It’s impossible to improve without a driver’s feedback. From this point of view, James is a true professional who always gives invaluable thoughts on how the car should be developed, based on what he feels from behind the wheel. We’ve known each other for several years now. This season was very productive, despite some disappointments, and I’m hopeful that next year will be even more successful with the new car. I really appreciate the huge amount of work the team has done this season and I’m truly proud to be part of it.

ARNAUD ELIZAGARAY

Racing Engineer It has been a year of learning for the whole LADA Sport LUKOIL team and especially for our youngest driver. Mikhail is a very talented guy, demonstrating his potential from his very first race in Morocco by quickly adapting to the challenging inner city circuit and managing to avoid numerous racing incidents that are typical of street tracks, clearly comfortable racing alongside some of the world’s greatest touring car aces. He’s a quick learner and really improved throughout the season. Of course, there’s still a lot to learn and he will need to do more testing and racing during the breaks. But, with the experience he has now, I’m sure he will perform even better next year. I am really happy to work with Mikhail, particularly as he’s very attentive and always gives good feedback.

SIXTY YEARS AFTER THE FIRST SEAT

Brand’s first vehicle left Barcelona’s Zona Franca on November 13th 1953. The production of 1400 discontinued in 1964, after sales of almost 100,000 units

N

ovember 2013 has seen the 60th anniversary of SEAT’s first-ever car, the 1400. Result of a deal with the Italian FIAT, as all the other models of the SEAT “first era” the elegant and luxury car rolled off the assembly lines at Barcelona’s Zona Franca on November 13th 1953, three years after the company was established. The choice of the impressive 1400 sedan as an initial model was not a matter of chance: government officials needed a means of transport, while at the same time it was a very suitable car for use as a taxi. In 1953, when the SEAT 1400 hit the roads, petrol rationing in Spain came to an end.

(

1400: SIXTY YEARS AFTER FIRST SEAT

At

an ex-works price of 121,875 pesetas (the equivalent of 41,735 euros today), initial production was 5 cars a day, built by a workforce of 925 employees. These figures would grow exponentially, and were the prelude to large-scale car ownership in Spain.

By the end of 1954, 945 units of the 1400 had been delivered. At the Barcelona Trade Fair in June, SEAT premièred the model and had orders for 10,000 units, enabling the company to bring the ex-works price down to 117,000 pesetas (39,648 euros). SEAT’s reaction was to increase production. One year later annual production was nearing the 3,000 mark, with practically 100% of components being manufactured domestically. On May 5th 1955 the Zona Franca was officially opened. In 1956 production grew to 7,000 vehicles, with 10,000 being built the following year, at the rate of 42 units per day. After two years, SEAT was employing 5,000 persons. Production of the 1400 was discontinued in 1964, after selling more than 98,000 units. At the dawn of the new decade, the country was beginning to experience growing economic development, with SEAT playing a leading role in the Spanish automotive industry, a leadership position it still maintains today.

Volvo Car Group starts series production of the S60L at Chengdu manufacturing plant

CHENGDU:

THE NEW VOLVO HOME

Volvo

Car Group officially started series production of the Volvo S60L at its manufacturing plant in Chengdu, China. The production start is another important milestone in Volvo Cars’ transformation journey and the establishment of China as the company’s second home market. The first car to roll off the production line was a Seashell-coloured Volvo S60L. The Volvo S60L is a long wheelbase version of the Volvo S60 specifically aimed at the Chinese market and will makes its official debut at the Guangzhou Motor Show on November 21. Since the launch of its China Growth Plan in 2011, Volvo Cars has booked great progress in China and starting series production in the Chengdu plant is the latest proof point of this rapid expansion. Growing its business in China and establishing China as its second home market are important elements of Volvo Cars’ long-term strategy and business plan, as the company aims to sell 800,000 cars globally. Sales development in China has been strong this year, with retail sales so far up over 40 percent compared to 2012. This means Volvo Cars is growing considerably faster than the market in China. Like in other key markets around the globe, Chinese sales are driven by the XC60, S60 and V60 models, while the Volvo V40 has also been received very well by Chinese customers. Volvo cars are currently sold at over 150 dealerships in China, up from around 100 dealerships two years ago.

The engine plant in Zhangjiakou has also become operational this autumn and delivers engines to the manufacturing plant in Chengdu. In total, Volvo Cars currently has over 2,000 employees in China, around half of which work at the Volvo Cars China headquarters in Shanghai. “We are truly firing on all cylinders in China,” says Lars Danielson, Senior Vice President Volvo Cars China Operations. “The official start of series production in Chengdu is only the latest of many milestones we have achieved in recent years. Helped by our strong product portfolio, our highly competent organization in China is determined to book many more successes in the future and the outlook for Volvo Cars in China is indeed very bright.”

2013 EDITION

The Romeo Ferraris career and myth have run through more than 5 decades on the engineering, manufacturing, tuning and racing sides. His company is now one of the most experienced and respected engineering in Europe as well as one of the most prestigious and winning racing teams.

ADVERTORIAL

Romeo Ferraris myth started in 1959 when its founder Romeo Ferraris, born in 1937, began to be known as the Giancarlo Baghetti’s Lancia tuner. Since then, 68 titles and more than a thousand awards have enriched his palmarès, including Italian, European, and World championships in all cars categories as well as powerboats titles and races. In 1962 Romeo Ferraris opened a factory in Milan and started tuning engines and cars. In 1966 he successfully approached the world of speedboats and in 1970 he started being interested in sport-prototypes cars, creating an engine of 1.000 cc (able to guarantee 136 HP at 11.300 rpm) derived from the Fiat 128 engine, followed by an astonishing 8-cilyn-

der 2000 engine (350 HP) that was fitted on the Lola-Ferraris, driven by Arturo Merzario. The experiences with the sport-prototypes didn’t preclude him to work on production cars during the same period. In 1968 he prepared a BWM “1800 TS” and in 1970 BMW Italia offered him the opportunity to tune some other cars. As a matter of fact, his workshop became “authorized BMW workshop” in order to guarantee a warranty on the modifications. There were several tuning levels for every model of the product range: from the “2002 Ti” to the “3.3 CSL”.Ferraris “transplanted” the powerful 3.3 CSL 6 cylinders engine into the BMW 2002 Ti. At that time he declared “these are cars for brave ones” due to the fact that these were able to guarantee 400 bhp, a mere 6 seconds from 0 to 100 km and 285 km/h of maximum speed.

(

In the mid-70s, despite continued successes on all European tracks, Romeo moved away from car racing to establish himself in the powerboat world, where he dominated for nearly a decade, winning 18 titles and obtaining a countless number of world speed records.

For the Offshore Class 1 boats Romeo Ferraris tuned several IVECO engines and then

designed and fully developed the Seatek engine that equipped the famous boats “Gancia dei Gancia” and “Cesa 1882”. The Romeo Ferraris company returned to four wheels racing in 2004 and from that moment the company has never stopped to win races and titles on the international racing scene… the story is far from the end…

CINQUONE

(

Cinquone During

the last 5 years Romeo Ferraris has successfully developed several different Fiat Abarth 500 versions, some of these able to offer the incredible power of 260 cv … that becomes 360 in the racing version! This “glamorous” car admitted to circulate on our roads confirms the intention of Romeo Ferraris to become a car manufacturer by the next 5 years. The 500 Abarth is the starting point chosen by Romeo Ferraris for his creation, a car that achieved resounding success worldwide and that can certainly be accounted as the Italian design standard bearer.

By drawing a well-proportioned strong body and by stressing the original dimension with extraordinary front and rear widenings, Romeo Ferraris was able to highlight the features of the car, outlining a silhouette that leaves beholders breathless. The wheels are Romeo Ferraris 18’’, specifically and rigorously developed in Italy by using well advanced forging techniques that have reduced the weight to 8,2 Kg. The inside of the car is of course 100% made in Italy. It is made up of carbon fiber technological inserts, precious Alcantara and leather covering on the sport seats. The Cinquone can be tuned up from 160 CV to 300 CV.

THE CINQUONE AT THE TEMPORARY MUSEUM FOR NEW DESIGN On the occasion of Milano Design Week 2013 (April) Romeo Ferraris has been invited to exhibit his last creation inside the Temporary Museum for New Design, established at Superstudio 13 in Milan. The Cinquone Stradale stands for the highest expression of automotive design in a car that is not merely an exercise of style.

development of the Cinquone Racing started in 2008, as a project strongly desired by Romeo Ferraris and super-expert driver Baronio (Aldo Cerruti), who wanted to get back on track with a prototype entirely realized by the Opera Factory. The starting point is a 500Abarth completely revised in mechanics (1,4 turbo engine is now

able to distribute 360CV) and body, now enlarged and with carbon parts that have reduced the weight to just 970 Kg. The high performance of the prototype and the ability of the crew composed of Michela Cerruti e Mario Ferraris allowed to achieve 3 victories and 9 third positions, in addition to the class victory in the famous Vallelunga 6 Hours.

Gumball Edition Gumball Edition

The

Gumball 3000, without a doubt the most extravagant automotive event of the year, took off from Copenhagen on May 19 to cross Europe (by touching Stockholm, Helsinki, St. Petersburg, Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius, Warsaw, Krakow, Vienna and Verona) and finished in Monaco where about 100 participants arrived just in time to watch the Formula 1 Grand Prix. The Gumball 3000 is in reality a long trip through Europe involving a colourful fleet of cars having two things in common: originality and exclusivity. And in this year’s edition, within this colourful caravan of supercars there is space for the latest and most extreme creature from Romeo Ferraris, a further

evolution of its known Cinquone, named Gumball Version. This unique car was created on the initiative of Team Imago 86, who had long planned to participate in the Gumball 3000 with a truly unique vehicle. The enthusiasm of the team together with the effort of the Romeo Ferraris engineering led to a car which, driven by a 1,368 cc turbocharged engine, is capable of developing 300 horsepower. Another important innovation on the Cinquone Gumball Version is the introduction of a sequential gearbox with automatic cut-off. From the design point of view, the car can be distinguished from its sisters for the large rear spoiler and the air intake on the roof.

The

very last car tuned by the Romeo Ferraris technicians is the Alfa Romeo MiTo. Both Alfa e Ferraris are part of the Milan/motor history, so this car has been approached by the factory with a sort of “respect” of the “Alfa Romeo Spirit”. Starting from the “1.4T 155 CV” version the Ferraris squad did a lot of work on the engine, both on the mechanical and electronic side. Also suspensions and brakes have been revised. Finally the re-designed interiors, brand new RF alloy wheels and some “tailor made” aerodynamic components contribute to get the car now more attractive.

Toyota Gt86 A New Masterpiece On

the Toyota GT86 quality basis, the Romeo Ferraris technicians team has worked hard, adding several technological features that added a great increase in performance, without touching the costs side too much. In detail, Romeo Ferraris has developed (in collaboration with a leading factory in the sector) a kit consisting of a supercharger and intercooler, all electronically managed through a new software which was the result of the endless experience acquired by the Romeo Ferraris team during its racing seasons. The kit for the Toyota GT86 is easy to install and allows to combine a simplified way of driving with a power boosted up to 258 hp together with more than 260 N/m of torque.

A truly special Volkswagen Polo

ADVERTORIAL

One

of the very last Romeo Ferraris “chef d’oeuvre” is an astonishing version of the Volkswagen Polo GTI. The little German car has been totally improved by the Milan tuning factory and the results (see the power table) are truly interesting. Romeo Ferraris engineers did a lot of job on the electronic side, by assembling a special additional engine control unit, and on the exhaust system that is now a brand new one, totally developed in Milan. The suspensions show now new shock absorbers and new springs (Bilstein and Eibach) and the new wheels are from ABT. Also the interiors have been re-designed by the Romeo Ferraris crew and the car looks now more attractive.

Mercedes C63 AMG Whitestorm Romeo

Ferraris made the extreme Mercedes C63 AMG unique with a sharp contrast between the dull white body and the black details. Also inside the cockpit the “Whitestorm does not disappoint: the high quality interior is refined by exclusive materials such as Cartier leather. the 6.3 litre V8 engine and the 450 hp of the Mercedes C63 AMG is currently one of the most powerful naturally aspirated engines in the world. Romeo Ferraris has therefore chosen not to intervene directly on its components, but has enhanced the performance with a new electronic unit mapping that added 79 hp and increased torque by 81 Nm. A complete new exhaust system was also designed and installed, with special dual output terminals

Romeo Ferraris company returned to four wheels racing in 2004 by entering the ETCS Series, winning titles for 5 years in a row. His success continued in 2009, with the Italian GT Championship title, the Abarth Trophy in 2010 and the Italian Peugeot RCZ Cup (with drivers Mauro Trentin and Mario Ferraris) won in 2012. In 2011, 2012 and 2013 the team also won many Superstars Series races across Europe with prestigious

drivers as Johnny Herbert, Michela Cerruti, Thomas Biagi and Vitantonio Liuzzi. It is important to underline that in 2013 the team was appointed by AMG Mercedes Italy as “official” Superstars 2013 squad. With 5 victories out of 6 races in 2013 the Italian team triumphed in the important Chinese PAN DELTA championship, with a super-fast AMG Mercedes C63 “sister” of the cars used in the European Superstars Series. Perfect score so close and championship

never in doubt. This could be the summary of the Chinese adventure of the Romeo Ferraris team, which has dominated the important Pan Delta championship with its pink Mercedes C 63 AMG, skillfully conducted to success by Mario Ferraris, which won five out of the six races in the calendar. This new important trophy has been added to the infinite collection of worldwide successes of the company founded in the late fifties by Romeo Ferraris. It is actually a great

sporting victory, which confirms the quality of the work by the Italian technicians, but also a marketing success, a success that in all probability will open the doors to the most important market in the world. Raced entirely at the Zhuhai circuit (near Macao and Hong Kong), the Pan Delta championship gathers the best Gran Turismo and Tourism teams from all around China and having seen the Italian flag waving highest on the flagpole has been a source of great pride for the whole team.
